  • @johnmiles79
    @johnmiles79 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    Just a note. The UK's F-35's do not, and will not, perform land based quick reaction alert roles. They are not fast enough to perform escort duties, unless the intruder is a Bear obviously. A blackjack could gracefully pull away from an F-35, which would have to reheat just to keep up for a short while.

    • @joelbilly1355
      @joelbilly1355 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just to be clear a blackjack is a massive radar target, thats why they arent used over Ukraine. The F35 can handle it and it would never see it coming.

      @alexs.4340 the f35b is the vtol version. May not be suitable for interceptor roles but hard to know

    • @johnmiles79
      @johnmiles79 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@joelbilly1355 The F-35 in any form can intercept and kill an intruder very capably indeed. But that isn't what is required. A QRA role means drawing up alongside to declare you are there and watching, keeping an eye on things. Russian aircraft can play silly buggers with the F-35 where they cannot with the purposely designed Typhoon. The F-35 has a bluff form to conceal weapons internally. It needs more power at any given speed than a Typhoon as a result. All it is is that the F-35 is designed for stealth. And since part of that is going slow enough not to heat the skin to detectable temperatures, it is perfectly designed. The QRA role is the domain for athletes. An old fashioned but still necessary show of muscle. Eleven second from a standstill, a Typhoon can be pointing vertically upwards if need be. Other aircraft might make the attempt, but the Typhoon can then just burn fuel and carry on going straight up until literally out of sight. Yes it will need a refuel at the top :-) but pure muscle.

    • @johnmiles79
      @johnmiles79 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@alexs.4340 An F16 can lower drag by carrying less. An F-35 cannot. So, to maintain your comparison, when F-16's, Mirages and Gripens skinny up, they can perform QRA roles adequately. F-15's and Typhoons are the aircraft of choice though.

      With the rising cost of stealth materials research and the way radar tech is becoming more precise the yanks may well find themselves with a fleet of F22's that become obsolete before they see action. Britain buying the F35 is really more a case of hedging our bets than giving up on more offence focused research goals. Remember before the development of stealth Britain led the world in active electronic warfare with the Vulcan's famously waltzing through everything the American military could muster on their home soil. But I've no doubt if we do develop a technically superior system we'll end up giving them the technology for buttons like we always do like we did with all our naval and aviation tech during WWII for perfectly valid reasons and with our jet research shortly after because we were naive enough to trust them not to immediately build their own civilian versions and steal all our overseas trade after we sacrificed everything to pay for fighting Hitler.

    The Typhoon is actually a Gen 4.5 fighter with some stealth features (like the use of RAM and recessed ordinance), but can be better described as low observable with a reduced RCS and gen 5 level avionics with a helmet mounted display, voice command systems and data link and multi track management.

      @Rabmac1UK The reason the defence budget fell from 5.5% to 2.3% (now 2.7%) is beause we no longer saw russia as a serious threat after the fall of the USSR, therefore the threat was no longer a major land battle in europe thus a large land army was not precieved as nessassery. But instead the saber rattling came from argentina, as every election cycle one or more party will bring up the falklands, therefore concern was on projection of power rather through the navy (to safe guard our various overseas territories not covered by NATO), So lots of money was spent on finishing Trident (that went over budget) our two new supercarriers, and modernizing our other ships. Oh and throwing money at the wall known as challeger 3, (could have developed a new tank for the cost of developing the challenger 3 ugrade kit, in the sense of the delevopment cost and actually upgrading the actual tank, cost per unit challanger 2 is £4.3m, upgrade cost £5.8m, keep in mind challanger 3 costs around £5m to build new)

    F-35 is a waste of time a very very expensive waste of time. When will the penny drop with the fan boys of these American game changers? Don't you think it was a coincidence just 4 weeks after receiving the flying pig. The British MOD announced it was developing its own gen 6 aircraft? Bearing in mind the flying pig was supposed to be the answer for the next 40 to 50 years. Before anyone goes off on a one against me stating the obvious. Think about it for a min or 2. The Brits weren't the only ones announcing they were going to be building their next fighter themselves . A few other F-35 customers did as well.
    Now why would that be if it was such a fantastic aircraft? Be rational about this, the biggest costs in developing a fighter. Are if you build one from the ground up a totally new platform. Not continuous upgrades, why would the British & others do this?

    On a hovercrafting and spa weekend my wife and I stayed at a hotel that was converted from the buildings used to house fighter pilots from WW2,opposite was a huge airbase and we had picked a weekend when the airbase was much busier than usual,apparently. I found a local pub and soon got chatting to quite a large bunch of RAF guys,some were pointed out by others as Typhoon pilots and seemed to be getting all the questions aimed their way. One civilian local guy who was chatting with us seemed to know a bit more than your average joe about the typhoon and when he asked one of the typhoon pilots about its versatility concerning its weapons options, the pilot likened it to a USB port😊. Which is a good comparison on the face of it.

  • @hens_ledan
    @hens_ledan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not sure why the MOD Procurement Executive seems to have lost interest in the Typhoon. Granted, there's the new upgrade path but we're not looking at expanding the Typhoon fleet and it's a great aircraft and can be better still. The RAF should look at a Typhoon 2 - not just upgrading existing aircraft (needed) but building new airframes to an upgraded spec, learning lessons from the F35. The RAF needs more airframes and simply put, cannot afford the F35. A Typhoon 2 would fill the gap between the upgrades of the present Typhoon and the Tempest, which is a very long way off.

    No doubt one of the best multirole Fighter ever build but Europe partner nations have to keep investing and employing new improvements like the new tip wings study by Airbus, more powerful 25.000 pounds of trust vectoring engines, conformal fuel tanks and intreduce more weapons to the platform, new line of smart munitions, from 125kg to 2500kg bunker busters like the AASM Hammer but with a wider range of munition, implement new AESA radar upgrade and a new powerful ECM suite. And Uk should make a new orders of the fighter like Germany and Spain, UK should increase their number of frames that will keep the lines open beyond 2030 and always updating the fighter and i bet new big contract orders will come, go Europe that a top fighter and the engine needs a 20% more power to that will make jealous around the globe

      It has to do it all because the other countries in the consortium (mainly Germany) required a multi-role platform & the aircraft is all the better for it.
      In regards to the F35. The UK government slowed down the buying process because after the initial 'debacle' in the early development stages of the F35. We didn't want to be 'lumbered' with a fleet full of early version F35s, only to then waste even more time & money upgrading them once they leave the production line. Now, also with the backlog in the production process of F35s. In hindsight, it's turned out to be the correct move.
      Here's an excerpt from an interview from Ben Wallace. UK's, 'then' Secretary of state for defence.
      "Its important for me to say to BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin and all the other [ contractors] that ‘It’s in your interest to keep through-life support costs down’ because simply, I don’t want to be held to a massive bill I can’t get out of.
      We need more than 48 and we will invest in more than 48, but I’m not in the business of giving a blank check to contractors if they don’t play their part in cost controls, support and indeed making sure Britain’s developed capabilities are put on them [ the F-35 ], " Wallace told lawmakers.

    Strangely in all tests where it competes with the Rafale it seems to be less efficient as an omnirole, its only superiority over the Rafale being its speed and specific role as an interceptor (both airplanes can carry the Meteor missile). It was specifically designed as an interceptor and note a true multirole (it was then upgraded to try to fill some air to ground missions and failed in its attempt to include electronic warfare), that's the main reason why France chose to leave the european project to build its own 4.5 omnirole. In the end many countries are choosing either the Rafale or the F-35, not the Eurofighter.

      True! And the fact it does cope with the carriers (any type) makes it way over "OmniIrole"

    Stealth is overrated and old hat, stealth aircraft can be detected by modern radar

    • @DireW0lf0
      @DireW0lf0 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually the Russians found that stealth can be detected with old longwave radar, if you know where to look and are expecting it! More modern accurate shorter wave length radar have more of a problem. And even if you are lucky enough to detect a stealth aircraft you don't have an accurate enough radar to actually get a weapons lock on it at least not at any large distance, and the weapons themselves also can have trouble maintaining a lock!
      The Iraq army actually managed to down a F-117 purely because they were lucky enough to have their old Russian radar pointing in the right direction as the F-117 opened it's ordinance bay doors for the brief time needed to drop it's bombs. They were even luckier to get a weapons lock and fire before the bay closed.

      @@patrickf4692 yep, it was in Seerbia and the must culprit is not the radar nor the stealth. The problem is that the pilot always used the same route and deployed weapons at the same range everytime. He got lazy and sloppy. A serbian anti aircraft missile battery and it's radar already got the blip of the plane, but not enough to lock a missile. Eventually they got there: every time the pilot opened the bay to engage stealth would kaput and a lock would be possible. That's ho the first F-117, and the only for my knowledge, was shotdown over serbian skies. If the pilot was more careful, he would never have been shot. But since then stealth users learned a lot and tech saw tremendous evolution. But, ofc, others still work also their best to defeat stealth with more modern and capable radars. But now stealth is not everything for stealth fighters, but also advanced electronic warfare able to blind enemy radars and then joined with stealth it makes a tremendous mix - plus the ability to relay info to 4 or 4,5 gen fighters which are trucks of ammo to attack different enemies bvr. Tech and the best human capital together always have the plus side.

It is more capable than the jhmcs of the super hornet and has integration with the Typhoons pirate irst sensor. A capability the super hornet does not even have. The striker 2 the next iteration of the helmet will enter service soon and will add night vision capabilities. The midlife upgrade of the typhoon which will be introduced in a few years will have a large area display bigger than anything on any other fighter. A new GAN based Aesa radar more than 50% larger than the super hornets radar. This radar will be more advanced than the apg-81 on the F35 as well.

      but never as a fighter, less air to air missiles in number and variants (with 1 or 3 external fuel tanks) and worse flight performance than the Eurofighter Typhoon.
      The Eurofighter can be a figher and attack/ bomber in 1 version, while the Rafale needs 2 (C and D)
