  • Power, noise...SEND IT! It can only be Ted's Quick Climb Friday! These are the Quick Climbs from the 2nd February 2024.
    RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk, England, home of the 48th Fighter Wing...home of the USAF finest in Europe. When Friday comes, the skies may be grey, but the F-15E Strike Eagles and the F-35A Lightning IIs find a way to smash through the grey emotional clouds and bring the greatest show unique on the Ted Coningsby Channel...QUICK CLIMB FRIDAY!
    So what is a Quick Climb?
    Unlike the Typhoon which accelerates vertically after between 8 to 10 seconds from brakes to take off, aircraft such as the F15E or F35A will usually clear the whole runway maintaining an altitude anywhere between 40-100ft with speeds of around 320mph and then pull the aircraft vertically or near vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft's cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a "quick climb" more usual.
    What is an Unrestricted Climb?
    It is the same as a quick climb.
    Why do they do Unrestricted climbs/PTOs/Quick climbs
    There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. Quick climbs can also be used in a combat scenario for both offensive and defensive, either getting out of a base quick from attacks or scramble to intercept. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted Coningsby Squadron...ooh yeah!
    What is a 'local climb'?
    This is your standard departure, just a simple take-off
    Can pilots just do quick climbs?
    No, all take offs are cleared for a standard take off / local climb out but a pilot can request a quick climb but this has to be cleared by ATC.
    RAF Lakenheath may have the title R.A.F. but it is in fact a USAF base or even more precise, a USAFE base (United States Air Forces in Europe). It has been a US Air Force base since 1948 and it is home to the 48th Fighter Wing. The wing has four combat-ready fighter squadrons; 492d, 493d, 494th and 495th Fighter Squadrons.
    The 492nd Fighter Squadron nicknamed 'Madhatters' and also locally known as the 'Bolars', fly the F15E Strike Eagle. The tradition of wearing the bowler hat has continued to present day despite the lack of official uniform regulations authorizing such wear. Despite the usual spelling of the "bowler" hat in British English, the squadron spells it as 'BOLAR".
    The practice of adopting the headgear indicative of the various geographic regions the Bolars are sent to has been continued. In Turkey, each deployed Madhatter had a blue fez hat.
    Which is your favourite at RAF LAKENHEATH, the F-15E or the F-35A?
    The F-35s at Lakenheath are the A variant and they have some very unique characteristics of the three main variants. They have a 'Vulcan-like' howl and although they cannot hover, they are the variant of the ABC that can pull +9Gs. They are incredible to watch and hear.

    It’s a different perspective being at 06 and then at 24. Both have their pros and I love the variety to see the quick climbs and action from different perspectives. I’ve never been to Lakenheath and it’s on my bucket list for sure. There is no one capturing better footage than you

    Well now I'm awake c/o RAF Lakenheath.. Thanks 48FW for alarm call. Massive dB emitting F15 and F35 beast, quick climbing. Db on the last one 134.7, yep I remember it. Amazing turn outs.
    3:48 - F15 turnout inc reheats was superb. 6:26 - An F35 floated and climbed with immense volume. Its Slippery Salmon Season as they make that pilgrimage climb.. A couple of Hawks going the ritual today. A day too remember from the day I visited to witness menacing action. 0 6 watch should be a National Thing.
    Pleasure to be there.

      No, these can be done on other days

    After watching f-15 then watching f-35, it seems the f-35 is getting up to speed and climbing quicker than the f-15. Is it just me or are others thinking the same thing?

    • @TedConingsby
      @TedConingsby  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The F-35s acceleration is quicker, Nikos can verify that with panning between the two, the F-35 is quicker, regardless of the F-15 having I higher max speed. We point out that max speed doesn’t always mean quicker acceleration

  • @HFamilyDad

    F35's seem a lot more agile than F15's, is it just me?

    • @TedConingsby
      @TedConingsby  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The F-35A is far lighter than the F-15E

  • @edyson22
    @edyson22 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    seems the F-35 is more powerful than the F-15E

    • @TedConingsby
      @TedConingsby  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, let’s look at the engines;
      F-15E produces about 29,000lbs of thrust in the two F100 229 engines with afterburner. So about 58,000lbs of thrust. It is a heavier aircraft than the F-35A
      The F-35A produces about 43,000lbs of thrust with its single F135 engine. So although the F-15 is more powerful, the power in the one single engine of the F-35 is quite impressive. As a power to weight ratio, the acceleration of the F-35 is a lot quicker from what we have seen. Max speed crown goes to the F-15E. This may not totally answer your question as a yes or a no, but it will give you a more definitive idea of their power.
