I love zinnias yearly I have it since I got it from farmers market given to me since 2019 I plant them indoors but this year I planted outside I hope it works well its April also from north Texas I got 3 to 4leaves now I'm excited to see them with more flowers
I'm zone 8 also but in the Pacific Northwest with very cool springs. So the EARLIEST they will get going is now in June! I have started them indoors but I found that due to the cool long spring it wasn't a great advantage--they sat there. Those i seeded directly in the ground when it got nice and warm almost caught up as far as starting to bloom. But once they start, they bloom for me all the way to October and amazingly I have not had issues with powdery mildew! So it all evens out!
I love Zinnias too! In my Zone 5b/6a area, I have the best luck starting them inside. They do really well, but Japanese Beetles can do a number on them. Picking the buggers off and dumping them in soapy water is not fun, but is the way I’ve found to try and keep the numbers down. 😊
Zinnias provide low-stress joy. Always nice to have so many flowers you can give them to friends. This year I’m trying seeds from Floret. Last year I grew ‘profusion’ zinnias, not knowing they had short stems. Beautiful though not great for cut flowers.
Awwww Amanda your so kind!!! I didn't know that about zinnias but maybe that's why I'm so drawn to them. I teared up and had to pause the video before watching the rest, thanks for thinking of me gardening friend!!!
@shesamadgardener thank you that means a lot ❤️ quick ? My seedlings I have inside could I put them out in my little greenhouse to finish growing on? Our temperatures are starting to warm up in the 60's.
That Benary’s Giant Wine is stunning. 😍😍😍 Thank you for this video! While I have been growing zinnias for several years, I found the tips super helpful.
Love Zinnias ❤. I have never grown the lime green ones, they are gorgeous. I grow zinnias, I just throw the seeds out in my flower beds once the temps are good and they grow, look amazing.
Thank you so much for this video. It is perfect timing. I’m so excited to get my Zinnias into the ground. I have so many varieties. Thanks for the reminder to do some succession sewing with them as well since I am in zone 8B I want to try to have some flowers through the summer. 🤞🤞 I did not realize that zinnias were representative of remembrance so I think I am going to name my garden after my two best friends where I used live. I miss them so much. We used to go to coffee every Saturday and celebrated every holiday together.
🎉I was going to start zinnias with the winter sewing method but a bunch of life happened😢 and I wasn't able to get started on that. I am now inspired to start a few different varieties. I think this video gave me the information I need. Thanks, and happy gardening!!😊❤
Excellent information. Can’t wait to see how and where you direct sow the seeds in the ground. Zinnias are definitely on my wish list to have this season.
I’m growing Benary’s wine and Cactus zinnias this year :) thanks for the idea to do rotations! You always make such beautiful arrangements w your zinnias!
I'm obsessed with Queen Lime series but didn't know about the blotch. I paused your video and ordered some. I also experience powdery mildew late in the season but otherwise they are pretty carefree. I do have a deer and rabbit problem. When I planted directly in the garden there was a good deal of chewing but not when I plant in containers. I suspect rabbits are more the problem. I also use containers and grow bags because I have a lot of shade and I can move containers around. Great video and tips.
I'm actually growing bedding zinnias this year, mostly for my railing planters or filling in spots in containers. Wish me luck! My sunny spots are limited, but I'm able to get some decent tall zinnias with sun from about sunrise until about 2:00 pm. (East side of the house, Zone 7) I may consider a second round for fall flowering. We'll see how it goes. I have 36 plants to plant, I can't wait to see what you do with 120!!!!😮
Trying Zinnia Thumbleina this year for my front border. The seedlings are up and ready to plant soon. Going to be better about fertilizing the zinnias and see how they perform. I tend to get powdery mildew near the end of the season too and pull them at that point. I really like to use zinnias to fill empty spots b/c it's an easy way to add some color and make things full.
This presentation was well organized and wonderfully delivered. Thank you. It’s timely as I’m getting ready to plant zinnias outside that I’ve started indoors and direct seed some others.
I love zinnias in my cutting garden. This year I ordered some shorter varieties to put in the landscape for the first time. Hopefully I can start them in a few weeks and transplant them ok. Thanks for highlighting a flower that I think sometimes is under appreciated.
My favorite are the fruit smoothie mix, I've started them from seed 2 years now and they are the most beautiful colors! Not only have I noticed the butterflies, the hummingbirds love them too 💖
Last year was my first time growing zinnias and my favorite was Queen lime orange and Zinderella Peach ❤️ I was also pleasantly surprised by the Envy, because I wasn’t sure if I’d like a green flower on a green plant, but it was a cool one too.
Okay, okay, I’ll try again. I have some Zinderella Peach seeds and may pick up some Benary’s Giant. In the past I’ve direct sown them so maybe I’ll start them inside this year. Maybe I’ll get the spacing better that way with less powdery mildew.
I’m a beginner gardener and decided to try growing Zinnias after finding your channel and watching some of your videos! I have my seedling trays under grow lights and hoping they do well enough 🤞
I love zinnias and plant them every year. My favorites are Purple Prince, Scarlet Flame, and Profusion zinnia. The only thing I don't like about the non-profusion zinnia is when the leaves get wet when its humid and begin to rot. Your seedlings will be beautiful in the garden. TFS!
I love growing zinnias and collecting their seeds. This year the gardeners workshop had a sale on zinnias so i am trying the lime series and a canary yellow one since that is the only solid color i don't have
Amazing you should teach about growing zinnias today. I got my zinnia seeds out today and then ended up ordering a few more varieties from Floret with some celosia colors I don't have. You are right! Zinnias are so easy and give new gardeners a thrill since they are pretty easy to grow. I had a ton of volunteer zinnias come up last year in a flower bed not near where I had planted some the year before. Kind crazy, but funny too. I had zinnias forever! I'm preparing a new bed for zinnias this year on the other side of our back driveway near our neighbor's fence. We have a green space behind our home where a lot of us walk and I want to start planting back there to share some beauty with the neighbors who walk the trails. Excited to see all your beauty!
Last year was my first time planting zinnias and I am hooked! My only issue with them was that some of them grew with a wave to the stem. Not sure if they got too leggy or what. Starting them a little bit later this year to see if that changes anything.
I usually direct sow zinnias. I am going to start some indoors this year. I tried Zahara Raspberry Ripple last year and fell in love with the plant. It makes a beautiful mound and looks so tidy. I want to start them inside to plant a hedge of them along my front sidewalk to the front door.
I’m trying zinnias for the first time. I bought the Baker Creek queen lime series, red, orange and blush. Will attempt direct sow because I don’t own any seed starting equipment.
Thanks for this video. Love the content. I’m a new subscriber and big fan of planting zinnias!!! They blew me away when I first grew them. The more I cut the more they produce, but no one warned me of the tall cut flower variety TOPPLING OVER. I encourage those planting this variety to STAKE them much like you would when planting tomatoes. They seemed to BLOOM FOREVER LOL Unfortunately, my beautiful plants were also attacked by lots of caterpillars I think from the butterflies that frequently pollinated my zinnias. Any advice on how to proactively deal with this and other elements that can possibly damage my foliage??? THANKS IN ADVANCE EVERYONE AND HAPPY PLANTING!!! ❤❤❤
Awesome! Yes, I plant my close together so they can support each other … I never remember to stake them. Regarding the foliage, I don’t have any alternatives as I don’t stress about the foliage since I strip it off when I am designing flower arrangements.
Hi Amanda, perfect timing for this video. I will be planting Zinnias from seed for the first time this spring. I am drawn to the Queen series for sure, the coloring is so beautiful. I also purchased some Floret originals that I'm really excited to grow. Do you follow the recommended spacing on the pkg or go a bit closer?
I have grown the Candy Stripe zinnias from Baker Creek and had some wonderful stripey flowers. I wish you could buy individual colours such as the yellow/red . I have saved some seeds from them and I'm curious to see what the flowers will be like - whether they will be like the parent or not. In my zone 4 area, I like to start the zinnias in pots first to be able to give them a controlled environment until they get going as I've not had good success direct seeding into the ground.
I have always loved zinnias. They are such happy flowers. I've had my best luck direct-sowing in the ground. Whenever I buy plants from the big box store, they struggle. You have motivated me to get an early start and try starting some inside.
The deer ate mine down to the ground but many still made it. The deer eat everything! This year I have a very tall fence in the backyard! Front yard plants are gone.
I am curious about your shelf brackets. I'm searching for some just like yours that will support a lot of books. Can you share your source/description? Thank you! Appreciate your videos.
I am not having luck with my Amazon trays. I follow how you do it but I'm having zero germination and molds starting. Min 14 hours light. Any thoughts?
Hmm, that seems odd … is this just with zinnias or is this with all seeds? A couple of things to consider … do your lights have high enough lumen? … I prefer at least 5000 lumens for my lights. Are your trays warm enough? Mine are all inside my home which is warm and I still have to use heat mats for some varieties of seeds. If you are in a garage where it is cooler that could be an issue. Are they being buried at the correct depth? Do they need soaking before hand? There are so many variables when starting seeds … if you feel like it is the Amazon trays, then definitely try something else!
@shesamadgardener I've tried flowers and veggies and heat mat no heat mat. Inside . Seed starting mix by garden supplier. Not sure lumen is part of shlf/lights set bought from garden supplier online....seemed reputable. Depth may be the issue

I bet you will have a ton of blooms!
Thank goodness for zinnias! They are a game changer in the garden!
They really are!
Beautiful Handwriting! ❤
Thank you so much 😀
They ARE the gateway for sure, I love seeing the ones that come back every year. Thank you for the seasonal color idea, you’re the best!!
You are so welcome!

Oh wow! I haven’t dealt with Japanese beetles in my zinnias … knock on wood!
I love the candy stripes! I have some that I will be planted this year
Wonderful!
I think I'll try zinnias this year. Thanks for the inspiration 😊
Yay, I’m so glad you will give them a try!

Low stress joy is an excellent description!
I’m sooooo glad I found you ❤❤❤ I too ❤❤❤ zinnias 🥰
Yay!!! Welcome to my channel!
Yay! Thank you for doing a whole video on zinnias!... They're my favorite too!
Glad you like them!
Awwww Amanda your so kind!!! I didn't know that about zinnias but maybe that's why I'm so drawn to them. I teared up and had to pause the video before watching the rest, thanks for thinking of me gardening friend!!!

I started zinnias for my first time this year from seed. I learned a lot in this video. Thanks again!!
Great to hear!
This is my first time planting zinnias, but the pictures of Polar Bear (white zinnia) stole my heart.
They are stunning!
I love zinnias too!! Those lime colored ones are Gorgeous! TFS! Blessings!🦋🦋
Thank you! You too!
I'm trying all the things this years! Zinnias are on the list!! Lol Thanks for all the tips!
Have fun!
Enjoy your show! Ty!😊❤
Thanks for watching!

Love Zinnias ❤. I have never grown the lime green ones, they are gorgeous. I grow zinnias, I just throw the seeds out in my flower beds once the temps are good and they grow, look amazing.
Wonderful! That’s awesome that you just toss them out!
I love zinnias. I'm growing short to tall lol I already have a few blooming out in the garden that I started from seed.
That's awesome! Blooming already, so lucky!
Thank you so much for this video. It is perfect timing. I’m so excited to get my Zinnias into the ground. I have so many varieties. I just discovered zinnia's. new gardener. I started a dz seedlings. this video came at the perfect time. I can't wait to enjoy them.

Zinnias are my fave! Last year I tried the cupcakes series. Baker creek. They were soooo pretty and different
Ooo, I need to try those!

I love zinnias and save the seeds each year.
Wonderful!
Last year was my first time planting zinnias and I am hooked! My only issue with them was that some of them grew with a wave to the stem. Not sure if they got too leggy or what. Starting them a little bit later this year to see if that changes anything.
Try pinching them earlier … when they are about 3-5 inches tall … pinch about 2 sets of two leaves.
Thanks for the tips! I haven't used fertilizer in the past because I knew they could grow without..... But I'm going to use my fish fertilizer!
Good luck!
I usually direct sow zinnias. I am going to start some indoors this year. I tried Zahara Raspberry Ripple last year and fell in love with the plant. It makes a beautiful mound and looks so tidy. I want to start them inside to plant a hedge of them along my front sidewalk to the front door.
Love that variety!!! And how they blooms change color as they age!
Zinnias are always in my garden.i direct sow them all the time but this year im gonna start indoor since im trying the binary giant and queen lime.
Awesome!!
Alabama! I water early in the morning so the foliage is dry by noon(ish)
Perfect! Watering early is a smart thing to do!
In south-central Michigan, we have deer; lots of 'em. They never bother my zinnias.
Good to know!
I’m trying zinnias for the first time. I bought the Baker Creek queen lime series, red, orange and blush. Will attempt direct sow because I don’t own any seed starting equipment.
Direct sowing works great!

Sounds great!
I usually go about 4-6 inches apart … now this can result in smaller plants but I don’t like to stake, so planting close together helps support them.
@@shesamadgardener Good to know, I dont like to stake either. Thank you!!
Great video 😊 Thank you
You’re welcome 😊
Zinnias takes me back to my childhood days,❤ ❤
I love when plants bring back memories ❤️

I don’t always have success with the direct sowing either … I’m not good at remembering to keep them moist.
Love zinnias! 🌸🌸🌸🌸 What do you call the arch (smaller cattle panel) material? Thank you I want to add to my garden.
It’s actually a full size cattle panel that I cut in half.
@@shesamadgardener ok Thank you 🙏🏾
Love your video.
Thank you!
Laura, on GA suggested Zinnas can be planted deep as you would tomatoes if the are leggy. What you think?
I’ve tried burying leggy zinnias seedlings deep when I messed up starting them … I found about half of them made it, so that’s better than none!
I have always loved zinnias. They are such happy flowers. I've had my best luck direct-sowing in the ground. Whenever I buy plants from the big box store, they struggle. You have motivated me to get an early start and try starting some inside.
Yeah I feel like they can struggle coming from the nursery. Glad you are going to sow some seeds!
Great video as always 😊😊..do you have to stake Zinnias so they don’t fall over?
Staking is helpful but I usually don’t … I just try to plant them close together so they support each other.
Love zinnias!
Same ❤️
The deer ate mine down to the ground but many still made it. The deer eat everything! This year I have a very tall fence in the backyard! Front yard plants are gone.
Hope the fence keeps them out!
When you deadhead, is there a specific place to cut or do you just cut off the flower?
Always cut above a set of two leaves if you want it to produce more blooms.
I grow all of the Queen Lime zinnias in containers on my deck. Bonny
I bet that is beautiful!
I watched it with interest though I cannot grow any zinnias. Full shade flower bed
Yeah they definitely need sun but thanks for watching!
I am curious about your shelf brackets. I'm searching for some just like yours that will support a lot of books. Can you share your source/description? Thank you! Appreciate your videos.
amzn.to/3vQI5op here ya go!
@@shesamadgardener thank you so much!
Where are your overalls from? Adorable
It’s actually an apron that I got on TEMU but I’ve seen similar ones on Amazon as well.
Greetings,
Where did you get the green seed dibber?
Cheers,
Upstate NY
It’s came with my set of seed trays that I got on Amazon .. they are linked in my Amazon store in the video description.
Nice
Thanks!
Growing them for the first time this year because I mainly have shade. My neighbor faces south, and is letting me plant her front garden bed!
Wonderful!!
Hi I don't know what deadheading means or how to do it I'm new to gardening thank you
It means to clip off the dead blooms …. It encourages plants to produce more new blooms.
Does Cut and Enjoy count for Zone 5b also? Or just your zone?
Any zone can cut their flowers for enjoyment and zinnias will grow more blooms in your zone too.
@@shesamadgardener Thanks! 😀
I’m in Georgetown Texas and the deer do nibble
Good to know!
We have deer.. well most years.. they do not eat my zinnia. I never sow more than one seed, usually 95% germination.
Wonderful!
I am not having luck with my Amazon trays. I follow how you do it but I'm having zero germination and molds starting. Min 14 hours light. Any thoughts?
BTW I do love your videos and variety of plants. Helping me with my gardening a lot

The deer that live here in Montana will eat Zinnias. They eat everything.
I figured deer would probably like them … they don’t have a strong scent and deer like to eat plants with low scent.
