Most of my zinnias are originally from seeds that my mom gave me 45 years ago, when my husband and I moved into our first home. I grew and harvested these seeds/plants every year, and hadn’t ever actually bought zinnia seeds until a couple of years ago. The reason I bought seeds that year was because I didn’t have any of the Candy Cane variety. This year, I bought a couple of packets of zinnia seeds at Walmart, hoping to get some colors that I didn’t have much of. I probably won’t buy zinnia seeds next year. When I harvest my seeds, I never try to pick the seeds out. I put whole flower heads in a paper sack to store over the winter. In the spring, I crumble the flower heads apart and sprinkle seeds, petals and all in a small narrow trench and cover lightly with soil. I figure the petals and all of the other chaff make a compost. I live in southern MO and usually wait until around the first of May, after frost dangers are over, to plant my zinnias. They usually start coming up in about 10-14 days, and then start to bloom around the first of July. They are definitely one of my favorite flowers, and I love to see the butterflies that visit them!
I LOVE ZINNIAS ❤ .. last year was my 2nd year to grow them..I cant believe I never grew them before.. but they are gorgeous and easy and beautiful..love all the colors just makes a garden POP .. thanks Amanda.. love your videos 🎉
Hi my sweet friend over here giving love and support you and watching all your beautiful card and videos you have put together love your fairy gardens in your garden videos
In the Victorian Era ‘language of flowers , zinnias mean ‘thoughts of absent friends’ or close variations of that. Started growing my own in grad school in teeny garden with roommates. Hence, as grad school days ended, and we each established our own homes…zinnias have been a part of our own gardens though many miles apart. Though many decades ago, this tradition has been maintained and shared with others, too!
Thanks for this! Everyone just says they are easy and don’t say why. I found this really helpful. This is the first year that I’m growing for varieties of zinnias and I’m learning a lot in SC 8a. Right on time!
I just planted a bunch of zinnias seeds outside. Love zinnias! One of my favorite flowers. Love the new varieties you planted. Can’t wait to see them grow and bloom in your garden. Thanks for all the information.
Your bouquets were beautiful. I was lucky enough to get two zinnia plants this year. It seems like everyone was also getting them. Maybe I'll order seeds next time. Can't wait to see mine multiple over the years
Grew Benary Giants a couple of years ago. Just spread seeds into a flower bed. I was so astounded at how tall they got...6ft ! Had butterflies galore! Trying new ones out this year.
Hi Amanda, this was just the video I needed to see. I have some Queenie seeds that I want to get started but this is my first year of seed starting flowers so I totally appreciate your detailed information. I was afraid I had waited too long to get them going and missed the boat but now I see I have not, YEA! The pictures of your harvested flowers were beautiful and impressive!
This is a very informative video. I just discovered how easy it is to grow these beauties and will try to grow my own. I just ordered some seeds and will order the growing trays you use. Thank you for sharing. A new subscriber!😊I can't wait for spring.
I got the same trays last year and I love them. You can see the root growth to make sure they're not overgrown. I do use the vent on the top to control moisture.
I had no luck with zinnias but it was because they werent getting enough sun. I just bought 4 packs of ready to plant for $3 at walmart yesterday. They are going right by the enterence to my garden. Good for encouraging pollinators
I have grown some heirloom varieties outside in large pots before and had great success. After seeing this excellent video I’m going to start mine indoors this time. It’s a control thing for me too! 😊 We are in zone 9b so it’s great to find a channel by an avid gardener in a similar zone!
Love this video. I currently have queen lime orange and blush growing but hadn't thought about doing multiple seedings. I have the same seed containers but never thought about putting water in the tray. We are having delightful cool weather on the east coast but trapped inside due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. Perfect day to start new set of seedlings indoors.
You do such a great job with your videos! The photos of all the different zinnias through this video was so inspiring and has me wanting to go buy seeds.
I have some zinnias I direct sowed that are about to bloom and I’m so excited! Zinnias are just gorgeous flowers. Thank you for your informative videos as they’re very helpful.
I love your enthusiasm for gardening and enjoy sharing in all your latest projects! I am excited to be trying some 'Zowie Yellow Flame' zinnias for the first time this year. The seeds just sprouted a couple of days ago. Each bloom is a rainbow of colors with yellow edges, then orange and pink towards the center.
Thanks for the amazing video on Zinnias, I love Zinnias. I like the Magellan zinnias for border plants, they have the large 4-6 inch blooms but don't grow taller than 18 inches 😊
I didn’t know your cruise was for such a special occasion! Congratulations and many more wonderful years! Enjoyed this video and thanks for the info that is it almost never to late this to start them, except winter. I think about it every week and don’t because I think it might be too late. A friend gave me Queen Lime Orange seedlings last year, my first time to grow zinnias. Wow, was I impressed with them. Great slide show photos! Loved the first one of you with the red/pink basket! 🥰 As usual, great info and inspiration. My Queen Lime didn’t reseed but I’m going plant seeds now and just see what happens. I saved a lot of the dried blooms just for this purpose. Thank you!!
Last year I discovered that butterflies were eating some wild parsely and cocooning in my garden. Plus, I have milkweed growing in my garden area that attracts polinators. So I decided to add Zinnias this year, not just for the bees, but also for the butterflies that emerge long after many other flowers are spent close to fall.
Thank you for this informative and helpful video. Zinnias put on a great show. I plant them in pots in a sunny spot; so I prefer shorter size zinnias that bloom beautifully. Zinnias attract butterflies, bumble bees, bees, and hummingbirds.
I recently discovered my first powdery mildew issue with a zinnia. It's in a container completely separated from any other plant. In fact, it's raised above the ground sitting atop a scrap piece of I-beam. It gets more shade than any of my other zinnias, though, in the PNW zone 8-b. Summer seems to be ending early this year and we have experienced a mild amount of rainfall already. Since I container garden, the solution I'm getting is to move it into a sunnier space. That's the beauty of container gardening.
Love this video Zinnias are my go to flower yo grow from seed I have a bouquet in my house every day in the summer I have planted many of the same varieties as you Today my lettuce bed is past it’s prime so I ripped them out and planted more zinnias I have planted zinnias 3 times this year!! B
I love zinnias, probably because it is really easy to be successful with just a handful of seeds. I told my husband a couple of months ago, "Remind me I don't need any more zinnia seeds." His response: "But there might be some you don't have!" I've got zinnias, dahlias and salvia ready to go in the ground, but we are having such an extended spring here in zone 7B N MS that the poppies, bachelors buttons, nigella and larkspur are still blooming and I can't bear to pull them up (although I need that spot!). I start Persian Carpet zinnias in mid to late July for fall bloom. Aztec Sunset and Jazzy Mix are also good colors for fall, and cosmos Rubenza. My reseeded zinnias never come back as the original variety: they're always pink. At my old house and my mom's, they always came back orange. I'm trying 'Inca' and 'Sungod' this year for late summer-fall bloom.
Add minerals to change the flower colors. I moved an orange flowering shrub, when it flowered in new location? The flowers were 3x bigger but they were white! The new location was close to the house. Probably nails in the dirt from the build of the home….
Last year I found many packs of zinnias and I was too busy so I just sprinkled ten pkg of seeds and everyone told Becky thin. I didn’t bc I was too busy, oh my the zinnia patch was so gorgeous! So many flowers and pollinators for weeks and weeks and so many bouquets . Not an ideal way to plant but it worked and was so beautiful . Think I’m doing same this year!
This is my first year growing zinnias. Absolutely love them. Just planted Persian carpet as well. I’m in zone 9b and it is really dry right now. Been watering every day but they look fantastic. So glad you did a video on zinnias. Great content. Thanks.
I love your grow light set up. It looks like regular shelving. I haven’t want to go there yet because most set ups look so industrial and messy. I don’t have a good place in my house to hide it. But yours is beautiful!!! Thanks for the inspiration!
Bonjour!
Great video! I'm growing Benarys Giant for the first time this year in SE England - fingers crossed for some warm weather 😅 Tip I learned recently is rather than change shelves and lighting, raise the trays up onto other seed trays and place the heat mat in-between -- this gives you a lot more flexibility as the seedlings grow to then drop the trays lower
Hi. I just started watching your video on zinnias to learn more about these plants. I’m planning to grow 2 different varieties this year: zinnia Giant Purpke by Botanical Interest and white zinnias that I picked up from the local nursery. I am curious how you like your 12 pack seed starter trays? I’ve been growing veggie seeds in to-go containers and plastic egg cartons this year with great success. But I think I’m ready to upgrade. Thanks.
I love them … since I’m a home gardener with a smaller garden, 72 cell trays just don’t make sense for me especially when seeds all need different germination requirements. The trays are linked in my Amazon store if you are interested.
Thank you for the tips! I discovered zinnias and how much variety there are. I don’t like hydrangeas 😅… I feel like I’m the only (newbie) gardener who don’t find them “unique enough for me” as all my neighbors have them. I have seen snow ball verbena and like them though 😂- yeah, the irony is not lost on me
HI Amanda, I just found your channel. Everyone says zinnias are easy to grow but I haven't had much luck. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I know they need to be in full sun. I need to know what kind of soil they need and what kind of fertilizer? I am making a special bed just for zinnias. I am in central Alabama. Thank you!
My only complaint about zinnias is how easily they get blight for me. Otherwise they are awesome! I'm south central Texas and they LOVE heat, so they are a great flower here! This is one of three flowers I would recommend to grow for beginners. So easy!! Larkspur and cosmos are pretty easy also. Cosmos ALWAYS reseeds for me, even after one season! 😄
@@shesamadgardener And Floret Flower Farm. Erin took years to breed her own Zinnias, Dahlias and Celosia. Priced a little high but the work they put into this project is amazing.
I am trying them again after decades ago. I ket them fet to hit one day and the leaves are all brown . I trimmed them but still crummy looking. They have blooms at top. Should I cut /deadhead the them way back? Your video is very helpfull.
Hmm, if they are all brown, they might be goners. You could try deadheading them and then making sure they are watered regularly and see if they come back.
Next year I'm definitely plant more zinnias, sunflowers. I find zinnias and sunflowers are easily to plant then Cosmo and marigolds. However after I plant comos I learned that cosmo need to sow in the fall in my 7b/8a in west coast Canada. This year is the first year I try plant flowers for bouquets for the Buddhist temple. It's hard to get sunflower procut series.
@@shesamadgardener ops I got Cosmo mixed up with some other flowers. I will sow Cosmo next year. I live in zone 7b/8a west coast Canada 3 hours north of Seattle. We have super wet late fall and winter. I'm not complaining about my 80F -85F "heat wave" compares to your Texas heat wave. 😅🤣
Thank you for your videos. I see that you have a planner for organization. Can you explain how to get organized and how helpful using a planner is for you?
Amanda, wow, this was power packed video! Great info that I never would have known. Yours always are stunning! Do you ever have problems with snails or any other pests that bother your zinnias? Something ate all of mine up! 😢 Linda
I have not dealt with snails on zinnias but I have had them in other areas. I like to use the beer method of putting out bowls of beer each night to attract the snails to them.
Very informative!! My question is when i gather my seeds from dried flowers, how do i store them until the next season. Paper bag? Zip lock bag? Thank you!!
Thank you. . Your video awas very helpful.I really enjoyed it. And subscribed to see more. I love zinnias This is the first time that I actually bought a PKG of seeds and grew some. The first batch didn't get moved under lights soon enough and we're too leggy. Second batch started under a grow light. They got leggy too. But not as bad. Yesterday, I planted them deep. Burying most of the stem. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Will this work? Or should I just plant another batch of seeds outside?
I need your advice. I will be moving my seedlings 3-1 to the garden They are about 3 inches. Can i put them in a west facing part of the yard? I live in so cal and later in summer gets bloody hot out there. Its dappled sun till early aft then the sun hits it hard till sunset. Can they take it? Or too little, with less blooms. Apprec your help.
You are not concerned about the seeds in the storage container getting too warm under the heat mat? I always thought it best to keep seeds as cool as possible for storage.
Do you place the seed flat or pointy end first into the soil. I was hoping you would show how you do it, but you fast forwarded it so I couldn’t tell how you did it. I love zinnias also.
Watched a video on mums yesterday and a gentleman from California mentioned that zinnias and mums are in the same family. I got so excited until I remembered my brother's and I are in the same family 😂
In defense of Baker Creek. They offer very high quality seeds and awesome varieties you can count on. Free shippping and FREE seed packets when you spend a certain amount. Not just ordinary varieties in the free seeds but awesome varietals. 😊

Just soil that drains well and make sure to mix in a couple of bags of compost.
NEVER let seedlings dry out when direct seeding. That is usually the cause of failure I think. Best wishes on another try in 2024.
Thanks for sharing! I’ve dealt with some blight but it’s the powdery mildew that bothers mine.
Also could I replicate this by using a pop up greenhouse in the yard?
Yes but you need to make sure that greenhouse doesn’t get to hot for the seedlings … you can literally cook them if you are not careful!
Nice selection of Zinnia. Thank you for all this information. You should try Peace Seedlings Zinnia. Very unique zinnias.
I’ll check them out!
@@shesamadgardener And Floret Flower Farm. Erin took years to breed her own Zinnias, Dahlias and Celosia. Priced a little high but the work they put into this project is amazing.
Loving this content,do you have a video on propagating existing plants, such as petunias, coleus, etc?
I do not … I don’t have enough experience with propagation to chat intelligently about it!
Mine lasted up to the first frost one year, they are beautiful frosted or frozen too ❤
I bet that is gorgeous!
I think the Queen Lime series seeds tend to be more expensive.
Great video, as usual! Thank you!
Great point!
감사합니다 좋은 밤 되세요
You too!
I love to plant sunflowers and zinnias too … they are very dependable.
Beautiful and so helpful. I’m trying again for 3rd year. Last year most if the seedlings were eaten up. Any tips for keeping rabbits and snails away?
I sometimes use cheap wire trash cans from the Dollar Tree turned upside down over seedlings to protect them.
Thank you for your videos. I see that you have a planner for organization. Can you explain how to get organized and how helpful using a planner is for you?
I actually have a video on my organization calendar. This planner is for notes only … I use a wall calendar for my garden organization.
@@shesamadgardener thank you, I'll look for your video.
@@shesamadgardener Thank you so much.....will give it a try!! 😀😀
Very informative!! My question is when i gather my seeds from dried flowers, how do i store them until the next season. Paper bag? Zip lock bag?
Thank you!!
Hi there! I have a video on how I store them! I prefer to use a paper envelope instead of plastic to avoid any mold issues.
Here is a tip that I use I spray my Zinas with Sea Kelp it seams to work for me. You might have to do spray a couple of times hope you like my Idea 💡.
Great tip!
what are the little seed sprouting trays? Thanks so much for the helpful info!
They are linked on my Amazon storefront … amzn.to/3Uc0NjI
What is the variety that has pink centers with white tips? 4:05 it's gorgeous!! Thank you!
Those are Zinnia Swizzle Cherry Ivory! They are gorgeous!
@@shesamadgardener thanks for the reply!!

Do you transplant directly from the small seed pots or do you plant up in larger containers before planting outside? Thank you
For zinnias, typically directly into the garden depending on the temps outside.
I buy my seed from a local seedbank here in Sweden and its around 3dollar per pack and 400-600 seeds per pack! :D
That’s an amazing deal!
Thanks for the great video! When you save seeds do you have any issues with them cross-pollinating and not coming back true to type?
Definitely … cross pollination isn’t something I am capable of stopping … I don’t have a professional setup for something like that.
Can you identify the flower at the 4:00 mark? I would love to try that one in my garden!
That’s a queen lime blush that hasn’t fully opened yet.
@@shesamadgardener thank you
Happy 20th , I have many seeds. Thank u
🌷🌷🌷
Thank you. . Your video awas very helpful.I really enjoyed it. And subscribed to see more. I love zinnias
This is the first time that I actually bought a PKG of seeds and grew some.
It will probably work! But if not, they are so easy to restart!
Yes they can take heat! Just make sure you go through the hardening off process before moving them to full sun.
You are not concerned about the seeds in the storage container getting too warm under the heat mat? I always thought it best to keep seeds as cool as possible for storage.
Not at all! These mats don’t get super hot!
What about the hummingbirds I've only had one in my flowers witch is Zinas.
I haven’t had as much this year either … we’ve just been too hot so I’m hoping for more as the weather cools some.
Do you place the seed flat or pointy end first into the soil. I was hoping you would show how you do it, but you fast forwarded it so I couldn’t tell how you did it. I love zinnias also.
It doesn’t matter which way you put these in … they will right themselves however which way they need to go!
Do you put one seed in the ground apart from the other, or can you spread them out in a handful at a time all over the ground?
Whichever you prefer … if you just throw out a handful, you will need to thin out the seedlings so they have enough room after they germinate.
Nice
Thanks!
I love Zinnias and plant them every year, but I have to battle earwigs every night. The leaves are stripped bare by the end of summer.
Ugh, that’s the worst!
Hope you had a great time! Been meaning to ask how you feel about the Vego seed trays? I think I saw you use them once.
So far so good … they will be used in a video about sunflowers and Tithonia next week!
Watched a video on mums yesterday and a gentleman from California mentioned that zinnias and mums are in the same family. I got so excited until I remembered my brother's and I are in the same family 😂
That’s so cool!!!
In defense of Baker Creek. They offer very high quality seeds and awesome varieties you can count on. Free shippping and FREE seed packets when you spend a certain amount. Not just ordinary varieties in the free seeds but awesome varietals. 😊
Yep! Wish they had more cut flowers but they are definitely growing in that area.
