- Joy Division performing 24 hours for BBC's John Peel
UPLOADER STATEMENT: 6/9/12
Apologies if any adverts appear before this video. I was notified today by TH-cam that due to a possible licensing/copyright issue, they will be placing adverts on this page.
I have declined numerous oppurtunities to enter into youtube's ad program (whereby I would receieve money per hit), and I have declined this for two reasons.
1) I believe the adverts are disruptive and counter to an enjoyable experience on youtube
2) I do not believe I should be reciving any financial recompense for uploading material that may be licensed or copyrighted.
There are many others on youtube who post up music and then get a cut from youtube because they've agreed to have disruptive, silly and nonsensical adverts appear before a video.
As far as I am aware, I was the first to upload these recordings onto youtube. I did this because I enjoy the music and I expected many others to enjoy it as well.
Cheers - เพลง
incredible that a bunch of lads in their early 20's could create something so intellectually deep, truly amazing
Absolutely agree with you!!Plus look at the truly amazing legacy and heritage this music and poetry has left for the generations to come.
Including New Order they are the greatest band of all time for me.
@@s1050 New order were quite honestly.....mediocre...never got the hang of their style. I think that they deteriorated after joy division fell apart. Surely their songs "Blue Monday" and "Crystal" were quite nice, but those were the only two memorable highlights of that band. It saddens me that such a band overshadowed the better bands of the time. Bands like "Cassandra Complex", "Danse Society" and "Ski Patrol" were far better than New Order. Again that's just my opinion mate.....
To think, Curtis committed suicide in 1980 aged 23. How big could Joy Division have been?
@@WHU63 ...and how shit he would have felt. Don't get me wrong, I don't think suicide is ever the answer, but him feeling how he felt, and then having that huge looming tour on the horizon with all the stuff that comes with it. Nah. I can't speak for how he felt, how he would react to fame, or 'prescribe' him some way out of the the hole he was in, but digging himself out was beyond him, and is most surely beyond us spectators.
This version is so haunting.
It definitely has a very dark urgent quality to it. Another song that's similar is Leif Ericson by Interpol.
This is why I started to play the bass guitar, in order to play 24 Hours riff
Thanks Hookie!
Hope you are doing well on bass, Hooky is an inspiration for me as well. One of the best examples that you don't have to be Marcus Miller or Jaco Pastorius to be considered as a great musician.
Would love to know if you've still been playing.
Same here, thank you hooky for inspiring me
He SIGNED Closer for ME!
Legend is Captain Hook 🪝!
"let's take a ride out and see what we can find...a valueless collection of hopes, and past desires" bloody brilliant!
Too true !
sums England up pretty well these days.
From 1979 to eternity
What a poor tortured soul...
R.I.P Ian Curtis 1956-1980
The best version of Twenty Four Hours
You can really hear the pain in Ian's voice here
My favorite JD song of the all. Best band ever in my book
God, this song makes me love them(and Ian) even more. He is really baring his soul here....what a brilliant song.
Ians vocals are perfect on this version
this song is perfect
hugely underrated band, ahead of their time, yet even today so inspiring.
Not so underrated now
this song is perfect.
i had almost forgotten how much i loved this band...oh god...this song brings it all back...the darkness...
I'm loving these peel sessions.
absolute perfection
Thank god for Joy Division.
This is so powerful!
Probably the most under rated JD track...of all of the versions out there this is my favourite.....mainly because of JD but also the late great John Peel......
Great versions of all these tracks they sounded so polished and clear I loved and still love Joy Division
you're welcome. the beginning of the first song of that album blows me away everytime i hear it, and i've heard it a lot! the sound of the bass, the hi-hat, o my goodness, pure energy/emotion/ecstacy. the whole album is bliss."if you enjoy it only half as much as i do, you're still in for ahelluva trip.
fuckin awesome, nothing will ever touch this
1979 was a bad year, this was something good. Saw them five times, solid. Martin Hannett did add something too.
Closer is pretty much an amazing album.
i agree definately underrated, this and colony are the standout tracks on closer.
Jon Fields Decades too!
When I want entertainment I listen to all sorts of different music, but when I want something real, something I can't explain, something that shakes the living daylights out of me, then only Joy Division will do.
I often wonder will there ever be another band like them. In all my years listening to pop/rock music I haven't heard one yet, but I'll know it the moment I do, if it ever happens. Can't tell you HOW I'll know, but that's the point, it can't be explained.
I know what you mean
What about Interpol? Their album "turn on the bright lights" is quite similar. Especially the song Leif Ericson
gorgeous intro
isn't it though??? One of the best songs ever written, IMO.
dovie2blue I agree ahah would be amazing if you see this
After hearing this last night I immediately ordered it on Amazon. can't wait to get it! must have played this 100 times last night. what an amazing band they were. New Order was NO ORDER.
Дивижн уникальны даже не с кем сравнить. Сколько б ещё можно написать. Кёртис эх Кёртис.
[Verse 1]
So this is permanence, love's shattered pride
What once was innocence, turned on its side
A cloud hangs over me, marks every move
Deep in the memory, of what once was love
[Verse 2]
Oh how I realised how I wanted time
Put into perspective, tried so hard to find
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way
Destiny unfolded, I watched it slip away
[Verse 3]
Excessive flash points, beyond all reach
Solitary demands for all I'd like to keep
Let's take a ride out, see what we can find
A valueless collection of hopes and past desires
[Verse 4]
I never realised the lengths I'd have to go
All the darkest corners of a sense I didn't know
Just for one moment, I heard somebody call
Looked beyond the day in hand, there's nothing there at all
[Verse 5]
Now that I've realised how it's all gone wrong
Gotta find some therapy, this treatment takes too long
Deep in the heart of where sympathy held sway
Gotta find my destiny, before it gets too late
If only he got some therapy......
therapy can’t cure existential fate
Immense.
I always seek this song when I want to convert from a depressive state of mind to one of aggression. I then convert that into energy and go running across the forest. This version is my favourite. Helped me out of many a bad day.
Keep going brother 👊
The best version
This version of the song seems to have a little more fight to it where as the album version feels more desolate. I love both!
my fave joy division song.
I'm a huge Smiths fan but there is no other band just like joy Division
This is pure anger, disapointment and despair. In a good way.
I cant believe someone can comeup withsuch deep lyrics, voice andoverall charisma. You cant imagine ow much how much I will pay in order oto be back in the late 70s in and underground joint ina JD gig with my buddies and a glass of scotch
Got to find some Therapy this treatment takes too long.... Ian reaching out for help but nobody understanding .. Tragic
Simon Irvine So do a lot of people on TH-cam still people don’t understand mental health issues. Despite the media coverage, people like Ian are still ostracised until we can all talk without judgement and fear of rejection.
Simon Irvine true! I read the text and immediately understood. Tragic :-(
thanks for the uploads, esp for no adverts.
intense...
That one special moment remaining since a bunch of decades, Ian!👌
what a fucking track x x x x x god bless Mr Curtis god bless
Excessive flashpoints beyond all reach. Solitary demands for all I'd like to keep...
god that is good!
Terrific, thanks for posting.
Awesome . My Boys Rocking .
best band ever. such a shame what has happened to the remaining members
Stay a fav of JD ..
This song is scary and saps off your happiness if you are in a relatable situation. 😔
So heavy..Funny enough the rapper Danny Brown turned me onto Joy Division
Owlute danny brown is awesome
He found his destiny...and it's too late...
Just brilliant
Ian Curtis is dead over 40 years, yet his raw haunting tones are still so relevant.
❤️
❤️
Happy Birthday Ian
Holy
And made it so hard for him to go on, whereas for the rest of the band it was much less emotionally straining. At least that's what I think, esp. after watching Control.
RIP Ian and Annik ❤
fucking brilliant.
"love's shattered cry..."
He was married with a baby and only 23 had a massive conflict between is rock life and home life and had to write all these lyrics which he apparently had in his head all the time , dream like words that he said just came out of him unscripted, now I can see where it all went wrong
@blonde7000
don't knock effiel 65 that blue song was brilliant
is this a little faster than the album or is it just me?
COD2 and JD is deadly combination dude!!! ;D
?????
@Jarrodboy Hell yeah man!
@Jarrodboy its a shame the way its gone, lots of live music venues stripped away over the years through poxy laws etc,the ones that get through now truly graft through little sweaty gigs that we forever remember the others just get a 5 album deal off simon cowell and are simply forgotten.
lost for words
If a man was crying out for help this is it ...
Man I swear this is the greatest band ever assembled. The aliens know
Ian seems tired! But amazing as always.
Awesome just the fucking bollocks.
listening to this really makes me wish I had a cigarette.
It'd be a lot cooler if you did
The way he sings the last verse is much better than the 'Closer' version. As for youtube adverts-I FUCKIN HATE THEM!!! The last thing you want when searching youtube is to see adverts on a video-even worse the ones where you have to wait 25 seconds for them to finnish! Who watches them anyway??? There will be adverts on toilet paper next!!! SHAME ON TH-cam.
I listen to almost every genre of music and have gotten chills from certain hip hop siongs in the past as well. I am defending hip hop as an artistic stand point from the guywho said all of it is garbage. I get chills from some pac, Big, Nas, Damian Marley and many others. But none of these have a deep subject matter and timeless lyrical content as Joy Division by some miracle managed to capture.
You have good taste... I have a tattoo that says sabali (patience) and an ian curtis one. I love most music..just not thrash death metal!! Cantt beat lyrics n beats that move you..
i was in ians back garden earlier today.
IT HACKED ME OFF THAT FIRST THE SOUND WAS REMOVED FROM THE VIDEO (WHICH WASN'T REALLY THE PROBLEM) but now the video has been removed but the audio is back on, MAKE YER BLOODY MINDS UP!!! from a pissed off Curtis fan.
Dead right mate, you have to be a digger, but the gems are there. For every Westlife there is a Wire.
Anybody else heard Karma To Burn's cover of this song? bloody amazing in my opinion.
I think he means a tongue lashing to the world
now that i've realised how it's all gone wrong..
ATliens - Outcast. Still love Joy Division though.
Like a warning from the past that we're all fucked
Ah, the beauty of youtube! Absolutely brilliant stuff! As for all you complainers, poke around youtube, google, myspace etc for great independent music. OF COURSE corporate sponsored music sucks! That's the nature of the beast! There are literally thousands of independent artists and musicians sharing their work here - and I AM ONE OF THEM!!! Don't be too lazy to explore!!!
Best band ever only joy division know how a working class man feels fuck all politics all users find the strength brothers before it's to late
so fast man......
check out "les bains douches" if you like your jd visceral. peel sessions are somewhere in between the album versions and les bains in my opinion.
Bass sounds like bass in Magazine.
@newfuckingwave yeah, it´s much more alive!
rip ian
Egypt
i prefer like 80% of the album version but its a bit slow and you can't beat the performance of the last couple of lines in this version
GOD Morris was on one!
@Jarrodboy well said i agree. and rubbish like Eifell 65 and Justin Bieber and Rhianna. There is a new type of music you might like. An artist called "Paul Kalkbrenner" a song called "Far away in time" Original Mix. In ways this song reminds me of Joy Division but a bit techno. I like this type of Music. He sings a bit like Joy Division.
@mick220567 yep, i thought the same about this version.
nice comment.
Can we leave the rap/hip-hop comments aside entirely? THIS IS A JOY DIVISION video, fuck sake .
@vivalacalv Haha, I agree.
hip hop and rap don't suck as a whole but takes little talent aside from the very few who actually do it well....but those genres do not have the level of creativity like certain groups such as joy division. When was the last time anybody got chills from Rap?
But I gotta say, if I'm going to the Desert Island and I can only take one version of 24 Hours, Im taking this version over Closer version! Just barely!
@onemanandhisfoot dont ppl that kill themselves go to hell?
