Good as Joy Division's recordings with Martin Hannett were, I think they come across especially well on these Peel Sessions. The same goes for early New Order too.
Sound of music, New dawn fades, Passover, Day of the lords, Colony and Dead souls are my all time favorite songs, in every version of them all, but this one has a very special place in my heart.
I wish there were more of their songs performed like this in Peel sessions - live and heavy but really clean and crisp. Shadowplay in particular would be great to hear like that, same with Atrocity Exhibition and New Dawn Fades. While the album versions are great, Hannet changed so much that it's nice to have unedited performances as well, but the live versions (glorious as some of them are) are really fuzzy/messy/etc.

@@17blackace Know exactly what you are saying 17blackace. Ian Curtis was so lost in himself that in his despair, he made a decision that was to have a massive effect on all his fans, friends and family. Having been on the edge of doing suicide, can appreciate how powerful the negative feelings and thoughts really are. Once took an overdose and had a near death experience that convinced me that physical death is not the final curtain. Ian's achievements still stand out and all the other great artists who died young and have created sounds that we can continue to enjoy long after they have left this realm of existence.
I have listened to mostly all Joy Division recorded live and studio, 2:35-2:45 is in my opinion the peak and embodiment of how tight musically they were.

I dug out my copy of "Closer" and this song isn't on it, but the mix is miles better on the Peel session stuff. Ian's voice is up front where it should be, instead of buried in the instruments. I like to turn my music up loud and when I did that with "Closer," the sharpness just about made my ears bleed. I don't consider that a good thing. I still couldn't hear Ian's words as clearly as I wanted to. So I'm getting the Peel session CD and I thank the person who put them up.
