Good as Joy Division's recordings with Martin Hannett were, I think they come across especially well on these Peel Sessions. The same goes for early New Order too.

  • @ravenouscolonelhart

I wish there were more of their songs performed like this in Peel sessions - live and heavy but really clean and crisp. Shadowplay in particular would be great to hear like that, same with Atrocity Exhibition and New Dawn Fades. While the album versions are great, Hannet changed so much that it's nice to have unedited performances as well, but the live versions (glorious as some of them are) are really fuzzy/messy/etc.

    See my true reflection,
    Cut off my own connections,
I can see life getting harder,
    So sad is this sensation,
    Reverse the situation,
I can't see it getting better.
I'll walk you through the heartbreak,
Show you all the out takes,
I can't see it getting higher,
    Systematically degraded,
    Emotionally a scapegoat,
I can't see it getting better.
    Perverse and unrealistic,
Try to make it all sick,
I can't see it getting better,
    Hollow now, I'm burned out,
All I need to break out,

Having been on the edge of doing suicide, can appreciate how powerful the negative feelings and thoughts really are. Once took an overdose and had a near death experience that convinced me that physical death is not the final curtain.

I dug out my copy of "Closer" and this song isn't on it, but the mix is miles better on the Peel session stuff. Ian's voice is up front where it should be, instead of buried in the instruments. I like to turn my music up loud and when I did that with "Closer," the sharpness just about made my ears bleed. I don't consider that a good thing. I still couldn't hear Ian's words as clearly as I wanted to. So I'm getting the Peel session CD and I thank the person who put them up.

A lot of people say Joy Division were inspired by NEU! but after hearing this track I finally hear it instantly, that krautrock beat is right here.

New Dawn Fades use to be my favourite, but I've listened to the album so many times that it's kind of gotten a bit old. Shadowplay & Wilderness on the other hand; get better with every listen for me.

This song is an out take from Unknowen Pleasures. One of about 4 or 5 songs that didn't make it on the record. But I wish at was!!!

The shit is amazing.. I'm pretty sure Joy Division had so many hits still ahead of them. It's evident with New Order. New Order had some great hits but I think they would have been even better with Ian's voice and writings that never surfaced or had yet written.

Still love to dance about more than a lot of ppl I know my age, and far more than todays youth do...Just no matching the electric personality and emotive energy that is Ian Curtis and Joy Division
