- Update 5/11/2024: I became aware of this kit for those looking to purchase a similar configuration. I have not tested nor do I receive any compensation for this: www.lceperform...
We're getting rid of the drum brakes on the rear of the '99 4Runner in today's video!! This is the first part in a two part series on converting the rear axle in a 3rd Gen Toyota 4Runner/1st Gen Toyota Tacoma from drum brakes to disc brakes. This is one thing that I've wanted to do for a while and when I saw a full kit become available to do this easily, I jumped on it. It comes with already excellent installation documentation, so hopefully this helps supplement that. I hope you enjoy the video.

Seriously, incredible step by step video and commentary walk through installation. Please keep up the 3rd gen DIY videos. Almost done with my rear axle seal and drum pad replacement due to the seal leaking. Next time my seals go out, I’m definitely going to refer to this for a rear disc brake conversion. Excellent work sir!
And thank you to the dude that put the work in for this kit. Give that guy a round of applause.
Thank you watching 🤟🍺
This is a really informative and quick video. The best presenters are those who can provide a high level of detail in few words. Your precision is admirable!
Thank you sir, and thank you for watching 👍🍺
Thank you for the detailed video. Your editing reminds me of Spike TVs Saturday morning programs back in the 2000s.
Glad it's helping someone out 👍 Thanks for checking it out, this was a fun video to make🍺
Dido! I hope this guys channel blows up bigger than Scotty(that guy’s success is well deserved as well). This dude isn’t as loud though, more therapeutic lol
ahhh this is awesome! I absolutely hate drum brakes. I had no idea this was possible or available, so I will be doing this asap. I honestly just finished rebuilding the stupid drum brakes on my '98 10 days ago, so it's a bit of sad timing on my part, but so be it - the thought of having disks on all 4 wheels is just too good to pass up.
These kits are hard to come by now. Good luck and thanks for watching!!
Nice work! After seeing this, I had to subscribe! The coverage you have here opens up a great possibility for a future build or conversion. Very detained and thought of.... I really like the in between monologue; discussing nuances in the stages of this procedure to avoid problems, and to leave certain parts to convert back if needed. Thank you! Will continue to check you videos out. 👍
Thanks for checking this one out. Cheers🍺
Omg !! I became i subscriber right way, awesome details of of the install👌
I will be doing this mod on my 96 limited probably on December when I safe little money for this.
Thanks friend👍 Glad you like the video🍺🍺
I have an 05 tundra DC I’m thinking of doing this since I’m getting a new frame.!!!
Not sure if that's the same axle, but it may work. The later models had funky abs stuff you may have to deal with as well. Thanks for watching 🤟
Thanks man! great video and upgrade!
Thanks for checking out the video👍🍺
Do you have the phone number or email address for the guy who sells those bracket kits?
The forum post in the description has ways to contact them. Unfortunately, I don't think they're making them any longer 😕
This kit fits on my toyota tacoma 2003
Not sure if this is a question, but I'm sure it does fit the 2003 Tacoma. The emergency brake kit I'm pretty sure will not, at least not without modification. Thanks for commenting and checking out the video👍🍺
The brackets look like they will fit a 2nd gen 4Runner, very familiar with both the 2nd and 3rd gens. Wondering if there will be an E-brake cable set up available for the 2nd gen 4Runner. Very interested in this, as well as many people I know.
I know the axles are very similar, at least the housings. They may very well work. I would hit up the guy producing them on T4R.org and get his opinion. Thanks for checking out the video🍺🍺
excellent video please if you can publish the link to buy the kid it would be very good thank you
Unfortunately, they are not available as a kit anymore. You could use the link to the T4R.org post and possibly piece a kit together, but the conversion bracket is hard to come by.
Hello, where did you buy the conversion kit, I need some for the Toyota 89 pickup, can you recommend where to buy them please, I would appreciate your response.
Yeah, I get asked a lot about this, but unfortunately that guy making them no longer does ☹️
Are these kits going to be available again? I would love to do this
This is one of my favorite mods. Unfortunately, the person making these no longer does, but there's been talk of someone else taking over.
Who’s kit is it & how do I purchase it. Website/part #’s. Everything is awesome except how to get the kit thank you
Link is in the description to the thread on T4R.org. Unfortunately, I know that supplies have been very limited, as the maker is currently deployed. Thanks for watching👍👍
Going back to drums is mentioned often in this video. Is there really any reason at all to revert to drums?
Honestly I hate drums and I'd LOOOOOOOve to do this to my 3rd gen.
It's mainly if I were to sell it, but that's not ever going to happen 😁
I saw this guy doesnt make these for sale anymore, anyone know a replacement manufacturer or a place to get the cad files? THANKS!
You are right, these are hugely popular!! I keep checking every so often, but it's just been talk so far on the forums 🤟🍺
this is a great video thanks for making it very informative. The background guitar noises a little bit much
Thanks for the comment on the background music. I always debate whether it's too loud, or even needed a lot of the time 🍺🍺🍺
Cute. Why did u stop producing the kit.
I wish I made these. Could probably make a bit if shipped internationally 😁
@WeekendWrenchTurner what do u mean. I'm in the states, are u not?
I went to the forum linky. Me and a friend were thinking about doing this.... thnx for your reply
These are not a product I've ever produced, sorry if that's wasn't clear 👍👍
Hey I love the video! Why not upgrade to the tundra brakes - do you find that the mustang calipers provide enough braking power for a heavier vehicle ? I’d love to swap to disc brakes but I’m wondering if the tundra brake upgrade all the way around would be the way to go
I did the TBU up front before I started making videos. The mustang calipers along with the 4th Gen rear rotors make the bracketry generally easier with the placement of the ABS sensor. Thanks for watching👍🍺
@@WeekendWrenchTurner shoot thanks for getting back to me! Do you think the TBU would work instead or is the amount of space/setup not a good spot for the tundra calipers?
For the front, if you ever plan to tow I think it's very much worth doing the TBU. Only real issue is whether your wheels will clear the larger calipers, which cities add additional costs obviously. Hope that helps👍
Can you use this kit to convert a Five lug Toyota drum brakes to discs? How do I get this from you
The bracket may work, but I've not tried it or seen it done. Unfortunately though, the person that made this kit no longer does ☹️
Do you know if this kit might fit the 1st Generation Tacoma? Thanks.
Then brake caliper adapter should, but not about the brake lines. They're for watching 👍
How can I get in contact with the person who made this kit?
There's is a link to the post to where these were sold on T4R.org. I'm not sure if someone else picked up production since he went on deployment, unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
Whats a rough cost for all the parts including hardlines, calipers and rotors
I think overall I was into it around $800. Thanks for the great question👍
i have a 98 toyota tacoma sr5 extra cab with 3.4 v6 which kit is correct?
Unfortunately, from the link in my description they original maker is no longer producing them. Thanks for watching!
Can this work on the 2018 toyota hilux
Not sure about that. Not sure what the bolt pattern is. Thanks for watching 👍
Do you use a brake residual valve to retain fluid in the calipers
They only added the residual valves to the 2000+ models of the 3rd Gen 4RUNNER. Works fine without it, though the 99's don't have the electronic brake system like the later models. Thanks for watching👍
The link for the kit says production is on hold. How can i buy this kit?
Yeah, unfortunately these were in short supply originally and I think I made it worse for him 😕
Would can I get all the stuff to convert my toyota tacoms 2003 prerunner ?
I've got links in the description to the forum post on T4R.org where you can see if there are kits available👍 Thanks for watching🍺🍺
I'm looking at to buy a 2002 Toyota Tacoma has anyone seen a video or someone did a disc conversion on that truck I haven't found one
I've not seen a video either. The discs would be the same, but the lines and the e-brake would not. Would be cool to see 👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner I'd also like to see the video where you take the base model Tacoma or Colorado or ranger and lift it to the PreRunner size. Not some 6 inch 12 inch lift I mean something where you get the base truck and left it to the size of the other trucks and then when someone sees it they'll not know it's been modified at all
Quick question, how do I order the kit? I'm trying to find it on the forum and I can't
There's a link in the description to the forum post with instructions on how to order. You'll want to read through the first few post with the instruction on how to order, though I know supplies are pretty limited. I've included the link here: www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/285491-rear-disc-brake-conversion-kit.html
This description is confusing. Every time you click a link it doesn't take you to anything you're clicking? Is there somewhere we can buy this conversion kit or do we have to go buy all the parts separately and put it together ourselves?? Your link says "conversion kit limited supplies" but there's nowhere to purchase it. Just descriptions on the things you'll need. I don't even see where you can actually purchase the bracket. Super confusing and kind of aggravating🤦♂️
Yes, unfortunately the person making them no longer does, so it could be the links no longer work.
@@WeekendWrenchTurner ahhhh.. my apologies! Good thing you got yours when you did cause the trail gear conversion kit sucks!! Thanks for the video
No worries mate!! No apology needed! Haven't seen the trail gear kit so thanks for the heads up👍🍺
Do you know a rear conversion kit I can use for a 5 lug 98 Tacoma
Unfortunately I do not. These kits are hard to find now 😕
How do you go about ordering this conversion kit?
There's a link to the T4R.org post where the person offered these. They are hard to find by as they unfortunately are no longer making them, though
where can i buy the whole kit
You may be able to still find a kit available from the link in the description, but they are no longer made unfortunately.
Do you have the dimensions or the cad file for the bracket?
There was some talk on the forums of someone taking up the production of the brackets, but that was more than a year ago now. I don't have access to the cad files unfortunately.
Can you send a picture of the brackets with a scale so i can maybe fab one?
ummm.... wheres the kit from you did not mention that at all
I've got a link in the description over to the T4R member who was selling these. Thanks for watching🍺👍
What rear bump stop is that?
That's the bump stop that comes with the Sonoran Steel lift kit. Great company to work with👍
Do you jave a kit for the 2004 tundra?
Not sure if one is made or not for those. These are specific to the 3rd Gen 4Runner/1st Gen Tacoma. Thanks for checking out the video👍
Where can I get the brake cable. Are those factory mustang cables?
They are not mustang cables, but custom made for this kit and application. They are sold separately though. Check out the link in the description. Thanks for checking the video out👍👍👍
Will this kit fit a gen 2?
Where do you buy the kit from ?
I've got a link in the description, but these kits are no longer available any longer unfortunately. Thanks for watching🍺👍
whats the brand name ? where can order these parts
There's a link in the description in case you hadn't found it already. Thanks for checking out the video.
oke
doke 👍
How do I get the kit?
Unfortunately, it is no longer available. Check the link in the description as there had been discussion of someone else taking over production. Thanks for watching!
Thx for the reply! I was able to check out that link. What about the emergency break kit? I didnt see a link for that? And when I tried to click on the link in your part two video i didnt pull up… again thx so much!
I very well may have been taken down ☹️
Part 2??
Part 2 has the ebrake conversion kit installation 👍🍺
Is there any rotors can can be used from any other car without having to machine the rotor
Not quite sure of the question here, but these rotors are from a 4th Gen Toyota 4Runner. No machining required. I remember reading somewhere that a Mitsubishi Montero had been used as well, but I'm not sure if it's with the same calipers or not. Thanks for checking the video out 👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner thanks for getting back Been doing a lot of research different videos kind of confusing people using different parts even having to machine the rotor Axle flange can sit flush inside. So 3rd gen rotors does it matter if 2wd or 4x4?
It's actually 4th Gen 4Runner rear rotors (2003-2009). Front discs don't work and don't ask me how I know😀 Doesn't matter if it's 4wd or 2wd either, since they're the same for the rear.
Is there Other way of contacting the person selling these brackets other than that website I cannot send messages through there
You'll need to create an account on T4R.org and post on that thread to be added to the list. Not another way right now at this point unfortunately.
Who make the brackets
There's a link in the description that goes to the thread on T4R.org where the seller has then listed. Great guy to buy from👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner one question do you know if these brackets fit 1st Gen 4runner
I don't know if they would or not. I know the rear axles are similar, but not sure of the measurements.
Fits toyota tacoma 2002 4x4
The brake bracket should, but the e-brake kit will take some modification from what I understand. Thanks for checking out the video👍👍
Where do you get the kit? I can’t find it anywhere
Yes, they have been unavailable for a bit as the person who was making them is no longer doing it. Great kit though 👍👍
