Is you car's engine healthy?! How to do a compression and leak down test so you can tell!
I admit, it has been a while, but in today's video we're going to be doing a compression test as well as a leak down test on the '66 Rambler. Though I'm doing this on an old car with a old engine, the process for doing these test is the same across nearly all interal combustion engines. Join me and learn a little bit about how to perform these tests and see what condition the Rambler's engine is in.

I've Never Done This Before! - Holley Model 1940 Rebuild
มุมมอง 1.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In today's video, I'm going to take you along as I do something that I've never done before: rebuild a carburetor. The '66 Rambler has a Holley Model 1940 single barrel carburetor that has an obvious vacuum leak, is corroded, and generally just cobbled together in order to make it work. And it works poorly at that! So, with the help of a rebuild kit from Mike's Carburetor Parts in Chehalis Wash...
I Broke the Air Conditioning on the 4Runner - AC Refresh and Recharge
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
After inadvertently poking a hole in my A/C condenser a few months back during the winter, it's time to get it fixed now that the heat is back. On the 3rd Generation Toyota 4Runner, this job is not terribly difficult, though this is one of those projects that might seem like something your typical DIYer may not be able to tackle. So, lets go through the process together of replacing the needed ...

Rear Disc Brake Conversion Part 2 - 3rd Gen 4Runner ('96-'02)/1st Gen Tacoma ('96-'04)
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this second part of the rear disc brake conversion, we install the parking/emergency brake system. This is an optional addon to the kit that I had chosen to purchase and as you'll see is irreversible. Though I have not seen this on a 1st Generation Toyota Tacoma, I believe it should also fit as the parking system, along with the rear axle, is nearly identical. I hope you enjoy the video! Lin...

seems sharp and fast amazing saw!!
I ended up getting an Evolution Chop Saw and it is an order of magnitude better. This works well going slow, but the Evolution makes a much cleaner cut faster.
@@WeekendWrenchTurner oh):
@@WeekendWrenchTurner how much does the evolution cost?
It is the 14" that I don't see on their site any longer. Paid right around $280 out the door (online).
@@WeekendWrenchTurner ok thnx
Why the pulley? Why not connect directly to the double connector? The leverage would be the same since the pulley is on the fulcrum side of lever?
A previous test from the person who made these showed that the added leverage was needed in order to firmly engage the Mustang Cobra calipers. I agree too, since it is not possible to lock up the rears with this configuration at all. Good question and thanks for watching 👍
Good stuff
Thank for watching 🍻👍
Sir, you are a hero. The video is packed with experience and the part list in the description is the icing. Thanks for your effort, I'm off to wrench.
Heck yeah! Thanks for watching 👍
Absolutely horrible looking crimp. Thanks for showing all what not to buy.
🤣😂🤣😂
Buen trabajo. Muy bien explicado, Gracias
Mucho gracias por favor 👍
How do I get the kit?
Unfortunately, it is no longer available. Check the link in the description as there had been discussion of someone else taking over production. Thanks for watching!
Thx for the reply! I was able to check out that link. What about the emergency break kit? I didnt see a link for that? And when I tried to click on the link in your part two video i didnt pull up… again thx so much!
I very well may have been taken down ☹️
Great job there! I'm currenly replacing both bearings on an alternator a lot like yours if not the same....I root caused an annoying sound to those bearings...but now I dunno...Anyways, my question to you if I may is what is the purpose of that little washer you replaced in front of one of them bearinngs? I mean, I don't have it new and wonder if that was the source of the annoying sound at start up....would it be ok not to place it at all? I could always reuse the old one anyhow... Cheers!
It very well could be your cause. Thanks for watching 👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner do you think it’ll be ok if I don’t use to reassemble the darn thing? The washer I mean…
Can this work on the 2018 toyota hilux
Not sure about that. Not sure what the bolt pattern is. Thanks for watching 👍
Penetrating oil would make your work much more, uhhh, civilized….
Where do you get those plates for the press
I'm fortunate to have several metal supply shops near me. Plates like that I can find in the scrap bin for 15¢ a pound 👍 Thanks for watching!
Its funny seeing all the comments from so calked professional mechanics. At my shop we have to go behind so called professionals everyday specifically the ones at dealerships. My shop specializes in engine building.
Hi i have a 99 4runner too. I just did the evaporator core, ac dryer, compresser. Ac switch, expansion valve. Orings etc...do i still need to add pag oil to the dryer?
Condenser too*
Absolutely, it will help your compressor life immensely!!
Please consider cranking down or eliminating the music. It's too loud and distracting and unnecessary (gave me a headache, lol). Just want to hear you explain the procedure. Otherwise, good job and thanks for showing us how to do this!
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching 👍👍
Where can I find parts to rebuild the alternator for a 03 Honda S2k?
Thank you for the detailed tutorial. Just 1 question plz: when you tested the lightbulb, how did you determine which of its prongs is the ground prong?
LEDs won't "pop" if they are powered in a reverse polarity. Incadensincent bulbs don't have a polarity, so you'd be okay for either one on those 👍
Very informative! 36,000 on my 2018 grampas lilprissypoo 2.7l. Toyotaco! I Drive fields and to coast monthly. Still pristine. Greasing and lubing my self after stealership neglect. 85.00 every 5 months for oil, filter and glance. Down to 14 mpg! Sheesh bowwinkle. Never changed air filter after rodents. Gahaa! Soot in exhaust pipe with their 0w20! I took charge. Lucas gas clean, intake clean, filter change. 5w30 full syn. PuroBOSS oil filter. Slowly going up to 17.5 mpg and now a running gear/ trans lube refresh! Hoping for 19 mpg again! At 67 yrs, I thot I could retire, but those kidderz are green pea and not maint minded! I mite grunt and moan, but my 32,000 investment will give me a lifetime of safe and sane transportation!!!!!!!
that little "wing" that squished out of one side indicate a poor wuality tool and bad crimp. it will also snag and cut through heat shrink and ruins the look of the crimp.. that drives me crazy.. at least rotate the tool 90 degrees and crimp again to flatten the wing out.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
excellent video please if you can publish the link to buy the kid it would be very good thank you
Unfortunately, they are not available as a kit anymore. You could use the link to the T4R.org post and possibly piece a kit together, but the conversion bracket is hard to come by.
Do you add grease to the bearings before put them inside their final place?
They are sealed bearings, so they don't need to be greased up, but I do put a little tiny bit on the outside race to help them go in 👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner thank you for the reply. I don’t have a press like yours but I could take the bearings out… I have no idea how I will put them back in 🤣
Where did you get all the parts? The dealer seems not to have all of them available anymore
I've found that PartSouq to be the best site to get stuff. You have to plan for shipping though, as even just a few items will cost a bunch to ship.
What exactly model of puller did you use here? Could you provide a link?
If you're talking about the one at the 8 minute mark or so, that's the generic harbor freight three jaw puller 👍👍
Was that a Milwaukee impact driver or impact wrench?
I believe I was using the impact driver in this video with an adapter for 3/8" sockets 👍
Niceeee! kitten butthole. 😅
Thanks for posting the image of the camera. Finding something good from china is hard
Thanks for watching🤟
Anyone knows with what dash cam monitor this would work?
It uses a simple yellow RCA connection that most capable head units can use for the signal. Hope that helps. Cheers 👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner do you know any 7” or 10” dash cam that is compatible with this back up camera. Would you drop the link if you know anyone please? I can’t seem to find one
Man I had the same problem with the clip on my 96 Tacoma! I basically had to hammer it until it broke into a few pieces and fell right out 👍
Having a spare parts bin is a must!! Thank for watching 👍👍
Cute. Why did u stop producing the kit.
I wish I made these. Could probably make a bit if shipped internationally 😁
@WeekendWrenchTurner what do u mean. I'm in the states, are u not? I went to the forum linky. Me and a friend were thinking about doing this.... thnx for your reply
These are not a product I've ever produced, sorry if that's wasn't clear 👍👍
Great video!!!!
Thanks for watching 👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner hey I noticed your rear bump stop what brand are those?
Those are from Sonoran Steel's 3.5" rear end lift kit. Great company to do business with 👍
The link for the kit says production is on hold. How can i buy this kit?
Yeah, unfortunately these were in short supply originally and I think I made it worse for him 😕
Great video and straight forward, thanks. Where do you get all replacement parts?
I've found waiting for a few mods/fixes and then ordering from PartsOuq.com makes shipping work out better than my local dealer. Small stuff I just source locally. Good question 👍
couldn't you press bearing and bearing retainer on at same time?
Good question. I suppose you could, but it does add a bit of risk for only a little bit of time savings. Not sure how much, but just made sense to do them one at a time for me. Thanks for watching 👍
Pro Tip, you can 3D print your own inserts to create all sorts of stampings, creases corners even roll hinges.
That's an excellent tip!! I've been printing with PETG lately and I bet it works great!! Thanks for watching 👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner PETG is a fantastic material for that, there are better materials but they are also way more money and way harder to print, they also release more toxins and so on. When printing a structural part like this make sure the layer orientation is according to the force flow within the part and use wider extrusion widths, so for instance I am using 0.8mm line width with a 0.4mm nozzle. This increases strength through better layer adhesion further. Also increase outer most perimeter instead of infill, the most outer layer is the most load bearing as well, thus hollow round bars etc. exists they are almost as strong as a filled bar but 90% less heavy and expensive. You are most welcome. I intend to use my vise to create small beads perpendicular to the bend lines to stiffen the corner further. This is very useful to increase strength for less weight and less money. I would also try to roll my own hinges, here I am not sure how the 3D print would hold up, maybe with lots of lubrication the print will hold up. Hinges can be expensive and honestly it would be just cool to make my own just for the fun on it. Maybe you can make a video for the hinge rolling or corner beads or some cool stamps and cutouts. You can also print more complex tool designs with moving brake parts for U channels and all sorts of cool stuff. I hope you try some of it out. If the 3D printed part fails there is still the possibility to make a zinc alloy metal cast, zinc melts at about 420°C and I can easily melt and cast that stuff at home on my camping bbq torch xD
Thank you for the great tips!!
Definitely a great video thank you so much and because drum brakes are almost the same in every car and small trucks this video deserves many more views and likes.
Thanks for the kind words! And thanks for watching!!
My unit did not come with a hole saw. But I can always use a drill bit and step up drill, if needed
Great video bud! I did notice a leftover screw on the bench tho. JK. 😆 How much will I generally spend for all the parts to do a complete rebuild like this? Is it a kit you buy? And how long does it take generally, about 3 hours? These questions will determine if it's worth it to me to spend the time to rebuild one myself. And what is the most common problem as to why an alternator even "goes out"? Is it the brushes? or can it be the rectifier or the regulator? Don't those need to be tested to find out if that's the actual reason it croaked?
If I recall, at the time it was about $65 for parts. Pretty sure I got them with a bunch of other parts from Partsouq, so shipping wasn't bad overall.
@@WeekendWrenchTurner , it's not that hard really after watching your vid. But for an extra 100 bucks I'll let some chinaman build mine. 🤣
I could not find the parts for my Jeep except on eBay I think they are cheap Chinese parts.
This looks like a much better system than the Witts End bushing press set.
Did my mine, now my e brake is not working and brakes pedals seem funny. Think the problem is the e brake adjuster. But great video this helps a bunch!!
Crank it and release it about 100 times. That'll get the self adjuster to do it's job 👍
@WeekendWrenchTurner Thank you very much for the fast response. I did exactly what you said, and now we are good!! Everything works great 👍
Right on!! Glad to help, gotta keep these rigs on the road 🚙
Hello, where did you buy the conversion kit, I need some for the Toyota 89 pickup, can you recommend where to buy them please, I would appreciate your response.
Yeah, I get asked a lot about this, but unfortunately that guy making them no longer does ☹️
I can't even unplug the socket at the back to get it out of the vehicle.
Saludos tengo un problema con la mía se comienza ajustar sola y se frena
The back and forth between horizontal and vertical is distracting annoying, disorienting and serves no purpose. Why did you not replace the hydraulic brake cylinder? Given a few bucks and a few minutes seems like this would "refresh" the brakes completely.
Those early videos were rough! I had recently replaced the cylinders about 2 years earlier, so there was no need. Rebuilt the OEMs and spares🤟 Thanks for watching!
How did you tell it needed replacing?
The truck was about 20 years old at that point. It was just time. Once the rubber starts to separate from the housing or the sleeve it's time to go. Thanks for watching!!
I'm having the same problem with a wheel bearing on a 01 taco.
what happens (if anything) if the bearing is installed backWards?
I would think it would fail at some point. The engineers at Toyota wanted it a certain way for a reason I would think. I've not heard of any failures but why risk it.
@@WeekendWrenchTurner thanks for the input.. i had a cornershop put in a new bearing a couple of years ago and there has been a slight knock when you jiggle the wheel at 12 and 6... a very small knock (maybe a mm or 2) but I am in the process of redoing it now that i have a 20-ton HF press without plates... so i wonder if this cornerShop installed the bearing backWards is why there has been a consistent knock ... the dealer told me it was because they re-used the hub and did not put a brand new 200$ to 300$ new hub in with the new OEM supplied bearing.. IDK!
I don't think a new hub is at all necessary, but it could be they torched it out rather than pressed it out and damaged the hub. I hope for your sake that is not the case.
The nickelback background music is distracting
No fan of Chad Kroger here 🤣😭
great video thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you for watching 👍👍
Now I need to find a video on how to do this without a shop press. Good video otherwise.
You could probably get away with an arbor press. 20 tons is a bit overkill I admit. Thanks for watching 🍺👍
Maybe the local auto parts has a puller I can rent to get the bearings off. Will find out in a few hours. @@WeekendWrenchTurner
Let me know how it goes 👍👍
I was able to get the bearing off using two long pairs of needle nose pliers. I pried up between the cooling fins so as not to damage them. I sort of hit on the pliers like I was trying to pop the bearing off and it worked after about 8 slams on the plier handles. Two long screwdrivers could also work as pry bars and pop it off being careful not to damage anything. There is room under the bearing to try a puller but the one I have wouldn't work.
Good job!! Sounds like it would frustrate me, so kudos for getting after it 🍺🍺
