Can't believe this only has 5K views.. I have been searching for this topic and this video is the most comprehensive with great presentation by far. Learned so much and thanks for sharing such detailed and valuable information. But I still have a problem so I would like to ask a few things if you don't mind. Problem is when my car (2007 Corolla) is jacked up, the wheel spins well with parking brake off, and they lock wells with parking brake on. But the parking brake doesn't work while driving. The car wouldn't stop and it will just roll with only tiny hesitation. Checked all parts, cleaned, checked cylinders/cables/joints/pivot points, no rust/crack, checked drum diameter, and replaced front (leading) shoes as they were 1mm. Back (trailing) shoes were 3mm so didn't replace. Nothing seems to help. Also, adjusted star wheel and cable tension, but nothing helped. You mentioned about the chamfer but upon checking the brand new drum for my car, they don't seem to have any chamfer. And as you mentioned in the vid, I bought a drum brake caliper and the diameter seems perfect without any chamfer. A couple of things I want to point out 1) If I force hard to turn the wheels with my hands while parking brake engaged (while jacked up), I could actually spin them a bit which I suspect it shouldn't happen. So I suspect the shoes are not biting the drum with enough force. 2) The cable tension was loose before (10 clicks) so I adjusted to 6-7 clicks. At some point it felt a bit loose again, but now I can't adjust anymore under 7 clicks as the adjusting nut is maxed out. I was able to adjust it much tighter before (even up to 3 clicks). The cables are working fine. I am quite desperate to find the cause and any advice would be much appreciated. I hope you earn way more subs and views that you truly deserve.
Yeah me too. I pour my heart and soul into my videos and it's maddening to not have it found in the sea of youtube videos out there. Maybe you can help me with this and share out my channel on your social network and they can share out on theirs. Thanks in advance. Some of the newer vehicles parking brakes suck even when everything is ok. That being said there are some things to check. You always change both shoes when changing your brakes. Check your setup as an incorrect placement of the drum brake parts could be causing issues. Make sure your drum diameter is only 1mm bigger than the diameter over the shoes (use a drum brake caliper). You need that clearance so your brakes wont rub but you don't want them too far away either. Disassemble the star wheel adjuster and wire wheel the threads clean and lube the threads with never seize. Make sure you don't mix up the left and right adjusters as they have opposite thread directions. Make sure all 3 brake cables are free to move. Find the adjuster on the cable and adjust so the parking brake lever/pedal is tight at 2/3rds of the overall movement. Make sure you do a bedding of new brake parts to match the contour of the drum and the shoe linings. Check that both sides are evenly braking, one side might not be grabbing as hard due to a cable or poor adjustment. Check the caliper pivot for the parking brake, they can seize up and not provide all the power to the brakes ( depending on the system). Do a couple hard brakes in reverse to allow the adjuster to self adjust if it needs it. If re using shoes, lightly sand lining and drum surface to remove glazing. I also change all springs when I change shoes, cheap insurance for $15. Hope you can figure this out, good luck and thanks for supporting my channel. Cheers!

I did drum brakes for the first time about 40,000 miles ago, and just inspected them. All is good. If you do need to replace shoes, you have to also replace the little springs and doodads too. That's called a harware kit. BUT: a regular kit doesn't include everything, you can also get the self-adjuster replacement kit as well. It's cheap, and easier than cleaning up and re-lubing the old one.

Great video! Cannot wait for the follow up on fully servicing the drum brakes. I have them on 2 of my cars, and i think they could both do with a full disassemble and reassemble service.
Thanks! I tried to make it nice and easy to understand for people and make it memorable too. Yeah I need to make a couple gearhead videos to complete this. My wife's Yaris need front disk brakes soon so that will be up soonish. Thanks for the watch!
Great information! I just recently had my drum brakes replaced. At first, they couldn’t get the drum off on the right side. The mechanic said that they were going to have to bang on it until it came off, and in the process, could do more damage to the rear and could potentially cost up to $800 in repairs. They eventually were able to get it off, and put the new shoes and drum on. Shortly after getting them replaced, the brake started squeaking. I took it back the next day and they told me it was normal for drum brakes and the noise would eventually go away. They said this without looking at it and just sent me in my way. I kept driving it and the noise got worse and the brake started squeaking even when I wasn’t pressing on the brake. I took it back and they said something about the part they needed was on back order from the dealer and had to adjust a new part they put on. When I left the shop, the squeaking stopped, but it began squeaking shortly after. So now I’m driving around with a squeaky brake again and I don’t know what to do. I drive Lyft/Uber and haven’t been on the road because they squeaking is so loud and unbearable, which means I’m not making any money. What should I do?
Sounds like you may have a poorly adjusted star wheel adjuster and maybe the brakes are sticking on. Do you smell a burning metal smell? Do you have grabbing of the brakes with light brake pressure? The banging to get off is usually fixed by removing the rubber plug on the back and loosening the shoes out from the groove in the drum. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, I might suggest going to another mechanic. Good luck!
I haven’t noticed a smell. I mostly keep the windows up because the noise is so loud. When I first start driving, the noise is t present, but when I brake a few times then the noise comes back. It has progressively gotten louder with a soft touch of the brake. Is the star wheel adjuster something that can be fixed or are my brakes doomed? 😢
Hard to say without seeing it but if the brakes are just too tight, they can be adjusted. If something is wrong like a broken or misplaced spring, then it needs to be changed. Like I said, it's hard to know for sure.
@@wayofthewrench Okay, I see. I just realized right now that my emergency brake is loose. It goes up without any tension or pressing the release button. It stays up when placed up and goes down. But it’s very loose. Does that also have to do with the Star wheel adjuster? I wouldn’t mind adjusting what I needed to if it’s not too bad of a fix. The main reason why I took it to the shop is because I couldn’t get the drum off by myself. I’m just hoping it’s not too bad because I need my car for work 😓
That's a high possibility that it is part of the issue. You might have a seized brake cable that won't return or some hardware has come loose causing the parking brake to be malfunctioning. Hard to tell through messages. It depends on how skilled you are with drum brakes. If you aren't very skilled, then I would highly recommend you take it to another shop. Drum brakes can be very tricky and putting the part in the wrong way can cause issues, which have huge consequences if your car can't stop. I wish I could help you more but keep me posted Deanna. Good luck!
Thank you, I appreciate this video! Suggestion: Can you do a diagnosis type video. Like which parts should we focus on when we hear certain sounds or vibrations.
You're very welcome! Yeah that video is on my list of to go videos but I might not be making it anytime soon. I've got tons of content and projects coming. Stay tuned....

If wooden mallet won't solve rust weld, then blowtorch is next. Doesn't have to be super hot torch, but you may have to stand on it, really apply flame right where needed for awhile.
Thanks David, glad you liked the video and got something out of it. If you deem me worthy, I'd really appreciate a share out on your social media so I can help more people. Yes, I will eventually be making a video on that but not right now as I have more brake system videos and a virtual pinball cabinet to finish. Thanks for the support David!

‘84 Silverado 4x4. My emergency brake won’t fully disengage when applied. I have to drive it hard to get it to disengage. What would I be looking for on inspection? Great content!!
Sounds like an emergency brake cable is rusted and needs replacing. Not a bad job but will require the disassembly of the drum brakes. I have a great video on how to do that, you should check it out too. Thanks for the watch and good luck with your brakes!

17:29 Oh no, I've been putting that silver anti-seize on the studs. I haven't noticed any problems with the lug nuts getting loose but gonna go out and clean all that off ASAP.
Recalled what I learned from school. Thank you for this video, I love it! Liked and subscribed. Looking forward to watching more of your vids. Greetings from Japan!
Cool! You must have had a good teacher cause I poured my expertise into that one! Glad you like the video and thanks for sub! Welcome to the channel! Cheers from Canada!
Thanks so much for this video! I do not like guessing at adjusting drum brakes, so I ordered a brake resetting gauge. I have 3 cars with drum brakes. Subscribed! While I'm at it, I have a question: I want to change a wheel cylinder that looks wet inside, it's rusted to a brake line which is rusted to a flex hose (which is probably rusted to the next brake line). When I do this, do I need to replace any springs, etc? (I would replace the brake line, flex hose, etc.) 150k miles on the shoes, 4mm of thickness. Quite old. Let me know if you need more details. Thanks

If release with star gear is needed, they need to know that star gear ratchets in 1 direction. Need to stick 2nd tiny screwdriver in there to release ratchet to loosen. 1 screwdriver is only gonna tighten.

My mom’s 04 Civic drum brake makes like a squeak when I am slowing down and let off the brake pedal. Any idea of what this could be? It makes sense to me that when you step on the brake that the brakes would squeak but it doesn’t makes sense that it would make noise when I release the brake pedal.
First inspect your brakes but if it isn't the squeeler tab telling you to change your pads, then it is a lack of silicone lubricant on the metal to metal parts which causes slight chirping like you said. You can take them out and re lubricate them but most people just wait till the pads need changing. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully I earned your subscription today and if you deem me worthy, I'd really appreciate it if you could share out my channel on your social media so I can help more people. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
My garage says it's no use to inspect them if they still work fine as you always have to replace parts if you take the drum off. Better to wait till it stops working and then get everything new.
That's how they work probably because they can't charge ( or can't charge much for checking) your drum brakes. For people with some time who want to inspect their drum brakes before you have problems, then it's a good idea. Your time is free, theirs is not. Sometimes the shoes can wear into a groove which makes it tougher and more time consuming but still doable. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
Should be 10 mm bolt holes, maybe try cleaning out the threads first. That vehicle should be metric by now but sometimes these domestics still rock out with imperial fasteners. You might wanna check for the rubber plug at the back and turn out the star wheel adjuster to get the drum off if it feels loose but won't come off. Good luck!
Sounds like drum brake is jamming or is jamming on a broken spring/rock. Time for and inspection my friend. Good luck! Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

what if u aren't able to remove the lug nuts My Otti had a problem with the left back wheel, it didn't move forward but in reverse it moved I couldn't get the last lug nut off so I'm jus stuck with this shittty car that can't drive forwards properly
Stuck lug nuts are the worst! I just dealt with one on a steel rim and had to cut the lug nut in half as much as I could and then hammer and chisel it until it split and fell off. Then Zi had to install a new stud. So maybe that can help you out. Good luck!
All calipers ( disc) and wheel cylinders (drum ) will have a bleeder screw. They are usually near the top and usually have a rubber cap on them. I need to make a how to bleed brakes video, it's only list to do. Thanks for the watch and keep an eye out for a future video on bleeding brakes. Cheers!
@@wayofthewrench no I finally got it off, I casted a specific fitting form steel solo its off and when there's another shitty job done to my car I can use it to remove the damaged nuts
A cheapskate way to measure the drum diameter is to cut a thin straight stick into a very exact length. See if it spins totally evenly all the way around. Cut down until it does.

@@wayofthewrench awesome, thank you!

Hi, I really like your presenting style. You really know what you are talking about! Thanks for your great advice.
Thanks a lot! Glad you like the channel and my content! If you deem me worthy, I'd really appreciate it if you could share out my channel on your social media so I can help more people. Thanks for the sub!
@@wayofthewrench Good to know you appreciate my comment and subscription. But I'm not at all active on social media. I can however mention your channel at my DIY car repair shop where I am a member of.
Thanks bud, I appreciate it!
If wooden mallet won't solve rust weld, then blowtorch is next. Doesn't have to be super hot torch, but you may have to stand on it, really apply flame right where needed for awhile.
Yeah that works too but keep it moving so you don't create hard spots. Cheers!
Great video. Any chance for a vid on inspecting ball joints? Thanks
I definitely learned from this. Thank you for this great video.

Thanks for the watch and good luck with your brakes!
very nice video, it's in the top tier of what you can find on YoutTube

17:29 Oh no, I've been putting that silver anti-seize on the studs. I haven't noticed any problems with the lug nuts getting loose but gonna go out and clean all that off ASAP.
Yeah the torque specs are for dry, no anti seize. Just wipe it off and hit them with some brake cleaner. Thanks for the watch!
Thanks
Awesome, thanks for the sub! You're in luck, my how to replace drum brakes video drops this Thursday and it's got everything you need to know. Yes I would suggest you replace the springs. 24 years on my 1990 Chevy k1500 and 400,000 miles. It’s still the stock rear. I think when I pull them I’ll jest new drums and all new parts. Mostly gentle highway mikes
That's impressive, I'm assuming that is a lot of highway miles. You might be surprised what you see when you replace them if you haven't been checking regularly. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel! Cheers!

If release with star gear is needed, they need to know that star gear ratchets in 1 direction. Need to stick 2nd tiny screwdriver in there to release ratchet to loosen. 1 screwdriver is only gonna tighten.
Not all star wheel adjusters have that sheet metal pawl that prevents it from going backwards but yes if it has it, you need to release it.
Great video! Now I know a lot more aboooot drum brakes!
You're welcome, you should watch the drum brake replacement video, then you will be a boss at drum brakes! Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

When you don't have a hoist, and you go "Oh yeah! I left the parking brake on", make sure your wheels are chocked, lol.
Not sure what you mean but yeah if you have your car jacked up, you need to remember your chocks on the wheels touching the ground. Especially if your wheels touching are the rear. Thanks for the watch!

Im doing a rear brake drum and brake shoes replacement on 2011 silverado Lt 1500 5.3liter. Im a DIY. What can i do remove anti seeze on lug nut bolts ? The lugnuts were hard to remove in the first place.
Use a rag and some brake cleaner and a wire brush. Then just torque them to the proper specs. Thanks for the watch!
Can you please do a video on siezed brake calipers
Sounds good, it's on the list to make. Thanks for the suggestion and the watch!
@@wayofthewrench I have watched all of your virtual pinball videos and a few of car ones , I had a look for a seized brake video and their are some but they don't cover everything, the pros and cons safety, one I saw the guy started in gloves but by the end didn't have gloves , another saying use a flat blade screwdriver to remove and put on gaters! Can you clean up pistons if so how without damaging them , I like your teaching style and the way you try to cover as many aspects off the job as possible

Dear Sir, I am at Lowe's. What metric size/length are the two threaded bolts you use at about 3:00? If no reply, you do not know. Thank you. (Eric)
They are usually 10 mm but could be 8. They are always metric though as there are never on domestic vehicles in my experience. Good luck.
Thank You!
No worries!
Only 36k veiws this channel underated i just started doin diy but i have a coworker (boss) that allows me to work on her car just changed her oil so i hope she pays me i allowed it to be an iou deal but if she allowed me to do this id do it much cheaper the shop like 50 60 bucks i charged her 20 for oil change which is what i paid my guy the first time but he did most the work but i helped so i learned myself he only charged me 10 the next time so ill do the same for her if she follows through

Yapper fr
Yapper fr? Man I feel old.....
Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
great video thanks

Thanks for the tips, but why did you paint if you can't see it?
Paint it?
@@wayofthewrench the drum
My garage says it's no use to inspect them if they still work fine as you always have to replace parts if you take the drum off. Better to wait till it stops working and then get everything new.
That's how they work probably because they can't charge ( or can't charge much for checking) your drum brakes. For people with some time who want to inspect their drum brakes before you have problems, then it's a good idea. Your time is free, theirs is not. Sometimes the shoes can wear into a groove which makes it tougher and more time consuming but still doable. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
@@wayofthewrench He charges 100/hour (+parts) regardless of what he's doing.
That's expensive yet still cheap, most shops around here are 150-200 an hour nowadays.
my 2009 silverado has the 2 holes, but i cant seem to find a screw that fits it.
Good luck!
Sir my rear wheal is in half turn its free and ahead more turn it jams what may be the reason
Sounds like drum brake is jamming or is jamming on a broken spring/rock. Time for and inspection my friend. Good luck! Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
@@wayofthewrench when i setting up the brakes it tights some where and somewhere free is it drum uneven?thanks for ur answer
Nice 1991 Honda Civic 😂, I have never seen a 91 civic that looks like that one.
Me neither....lol. I believe it's actually a '96 Civic. Good eye dude! My favorite was the 1993 Civic Hatchbacks......still on my list to get one and install the biggest fart cannon I can on it. Thanks for the watch!
0:08 where can I get these tools
You gotta use your mind and your hands.....only then can your heart connect. There's a reason why people live working on cars! Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
Most of not all of the tools in this video can be purchased at your local auto parts store or on Amazon. Thanks for the watch!
what if u aren't able to remove the lug nuts
My Otti had a problem with the left back wheel, it didn't move forward but in reverse it moved I couldn't get the last lug nut off so I'm jus stuck with this shittty car that can't drive forwards properly
Stuck lug nuts are the worst! I just dealt with one on a steel rim and had to cut the lug nut in half as much as I could and then hammer and chisel it until it split and fell off. Then Zi had to install a new stud. So maybe that can help you out. Good luck!
So what if you need to bleed your brakes. Where's the bleeder screw ? I didn't see one
Cheers!
yes I've tried different mechanics but they cannot do it I've had this problem on this car for a couple days
Hopefully you can find a good mechanic who can help you out. Thanks for the watch!
@@wayofthewrench no I finally got it off, I casted a specific fitting form steel solo its off and when there's another shitty job done to my car I can use it to remove the damaged nuts
Good on ya! Cheers!
I think you said the vehicle is a 1991 but it’s more likely an 01. Not really important but just wanted to point that out 😊
Yeah I misspoke about the year of the car. Thanks for the watch!
A cheapskate way to measure the drum diameter is to cut a thin straight stick into a very exact length. See if it spins totally evenly all the way around. Cut down until it does.
That's a neat trick! Thanks for the watch!
