The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Paint your wagon had such a wonderful soundtrack, Lee was brilliant
I have heard good singers try to sing this song, but NO ONE has ever done it as well as Lee Marvin! Such a classic!
Protože Lee Marvin nebyl dobrý zpěvák. Proto to má tu nesmrtelnou atmosféru.
Lee Marvin, might not wanted to sing this song but I hope he realises he made a lot of people happy that he did.
If he realizes it,it'll be from heaven. He passed in 1987.
He knew before he died, it was one of only 3 or 4 things in his life he was really proud of 😉@@xScooterAZx
Lee owns this song forever __
They don't make actors like Lee Marvin anymore. Great clip - THANKS for posting.
Thanks for your kind words of my family member
The Killers ! The dirty Dozen. Best movies . And Robert Mitchum in CAPE FEAR and YAKUZA Fantastic Movies.
Thank you! The great Lee Marvin singing his hit song from Paint Your Wagon, truly awesome to me and others. Rest In Eternal Peace.
yeah, and Clint Eastwood talked to the trees 😅
So was "Paint Your Wagon" the movie's title ?
Yes.
You can see it on TH-cam now!
Sempre Fi I read he also he served with Bob Keshen ( Captain Kangaroo )
Paint Your Wagon is one of the few movies I can see over and over again. And enjoy.
me an dad used to laugh about when they were burying that guy when he spotted gold in the hole they were digging lee sings out bring him up boys bwahahaha love lee marvin great actor
I always enjoy Lee with this song. I stopped by his burial site in Arlington several years ago and sang this song.
This discribes me, after I retired and my wife died, I traveled the roads of North America for the next 25 years. Enjoyed every second of it.
My mum who disliked music loved this song Love the story how he had to be totally smashed to record it
Good luck to you from Hamburg, Germany
@@manfredbley1908 I've beeen to your fine city in the 1970s and 80s. But these days, it is the German people that will need all the luck and help from God that they can get. So sad, really it is.
I know a guy like you
The sky was my hero
Never will be any more great actors like him and the actors of the past.
LEE MARWIN offers himself as an actor, he were GENUINE
This song with Lee Marwin was played at my husbands funeral. It fitted him like a glove. ❤
Lee Marvin was the ultimate bad-ass. He puts all of today's action stars to shame.
The man was not just a World War II combat veteran.
He was a genuine badass Marine.
Look up his history
His army did things modern Armies don't do anymore.
Back in 1983, a friend and I went to a bar in Tucson, AZ and Lee Marvin was drinking there. My friend knew him, so we spent the afternoon getting drunk with him. Wish we had cell phone cameras back then.
Give it up to the Yale glee club. They were absoluteky fantastic and meshed well with Lee's voice.
I thought he did a great job! Perfect song for someone who never and didn’t want to sing! I love it.
Lee Marvin one of the greatest actors to come out of Hollywood. RIP Lee PEACE OUT AND LOVE One OF Manygreat shows MMLZZZ😊
I was involved in campus radio in the late 1970s at university in Kingston Ontario. My friend Ian Byers often did the last shift of the broadcast day and he'd play this song before the closing national anthem and sign off.
Ian was a complicated guy, fiercely dedicated to his friends, idiosyncratic, eclectic in his musical tastes (country music and jazz) and more than a little bit on the volatile side. We was truly a wandering star. His wife passed away a year before he did, and we interred their ashes together at a ceremony at a little country church. I played this song for him/them at the graveside on my iPhone and Bluetooth speaker. Keep wanderin' old friend.
That was sad & beautiful at the same time, you honored you’re friend well. 💕
This proof of what I have always thought. Music is a magical moment in time.without Lee Marvin's voice this song would mean nothing.
This is Lee's song!! No one else could sing this...❤️😘😘
Loved Lee Marvin in everything he did in film and WW II.
Just have seen " THE DIRTY DOZEN " . Awesome movie.
Lee couldn't hold a note but he certainly made this tune his own. It was one of my dad's favourite songs it's also one of mine.
Yes, he gave it life :)
Absolutely loved Lee Marvin in Paint Your Wagon. This song was powerful in telling a story.
R.I.P. Lee Marvin: 1924-1987.
When men were real men... brilliant actor and of course real war hero RIP Lee
May God bless his Soul!
You're so right
As a kid in 1970 I was given this 45 and I fell in love with it. This amazing appearance pre-dates the release of the single across the world. Although the single would not become a hit in the United States, it would reach #1 in UK five months after this appearance and kept the Beatles "Let It Be" out of the #1 spot.
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast on TV. About 40 years later, I met a fellow, a medical doctor in Seattle, who said he had been a member of the glee club at Yale and had backed up Lee Marvin on the Ed Sullivan show. He said Marvin was a pretty abrasive guy, and appeared to have had a drink or 2 before rehearsal.
Great Actor ! Thank you for your service !
He is the perfect person to sing this song. It’s been in with his character so well. Sometimes when I watch this movie, I think I’m watching it just to get to the part where he sings this.
Magnificent!
This man should get a least 10000000000 votes
Maybe even more
Rest In Eternal Peace Lee Marvin xx
Always liked the way the choir sounded in conjunction with Marvin's stoic delivery.
Tego się nie zapomina .Dziękuję Mr.Lee Marvin
Watched the film with my parents when it came out. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love this song
Never knew this existed...The movie and this scene are one of my all time favorites....A masterpiece...Bravo!!!!...
Ein wunderbarer Schauspielr und Gentnleman der alte Schule mit einer einmaligen Stimme. Ehre for ever.
Superb rendition of the classic song.
Surely one of the most unusual live television performances ever!
Yes, but a lip-sych.
I agree-Marvin was lip-synching. In my opinion, that was a mistake.
Only ever this from the Film , Never seen him sing this in the Studio -If you know what I mean . -Brilliant ! Thank you for sharing
As far as I know, the only Pacific Theatre marine ever awarded a gold record, which he received for this song.
He was one of the very few actors I ever liked
Putting Lee Marvin in a solo singing role was brave indeed! Wow, don't worry about being in tune.
My mom loved the movie Paint Your Wagon!! She also loved Lee Marvin!
This song and They call the wind Marayah are the best songs of the movie!
The Yale Glee Club was fantastic. Lee was a very good actor but a great patriot!
Such a deep baritone voice. ❤. Wonderful actor too.
I'm a baritone and I know for certain that I can't go that low. He is a true Bass, ma'am.
@@KYoss68 whatever it is, he sang it beautifully. 🙂
I miss Lee Marvin. I'm an older woman and always thought, that Lee was extremely YUMMY! I loved him in, "Paint Your Wagon." Great movie with Clint Eastwood.
I get chills when I hear this song
Lee Marvin always was my hero
Who would have thought at the time that Lee Marvin singing “Wandering Star” was a actual hit in the UK. That would be the reason that Ed had him on his show 😅.
Happy New Year 🎉!
American movie and theater score was always considered great pop music in Britain. To the rest of the world, Americas best audio/visual art has come from our movies. It's the only American art they think is worth a crap
@@markthrasher6770 Mark I totally understand, the Old World view of out what passes for Art……:).
I heard that when in the US Navy, especially in Southern France…..need I say more?
@markthrasher6770 Believe me alot of England thinks it's crap too but there's some exceptions. This song and Midnight Cowboy to name a few
I remember seeing this when it aired. Great
Thank you so very much for your service and sacrifice. May you Rest In Peace. 🙏🇺🇸
Never be another Lee thats for certain
I always loved the movie and this song was the perfect ending to it
I love this song and Lee Marvin singing it❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This has always been one of my favorite scenes from one of my all time favorite movies. I’ll always make time to listen to Lee singing this song.
Lee was an actual decorated WW2 combat veteran
about 1 million were
@@jadezee6316 - But did those veterans all become acclaimed actors?
My late husband and l saw his grave at Arlington. We were impressed.
@@suebenson1834 Did you notice he was buried right beside Joe Louis?
Yes, he fought in the pacific and was wounded also.
Lee Marvin was always a jewel in the rough. But just one glimmer of this performer was worth all the polish of tinsel town.
to this day, all the surviving choir members are like 'l was on stage with Lee Marvin thats me right there!!'
....buried in Arlington Cemetary..........a war hero.
A fabulous actor, star, don’t make them like this no more,🤠🍻🍻 xx
I can remember seeing this on Ed Sullivan's show. " Really big shoe "Always liked Ed's show.
America had Barry Saddler and Lee Marvin true heroes .
He was such an Handsome man..❤❤ love you lee...xxx
Gee, he cleans up nice, doesn't he?
Watch Mr. Marvin sing Wandetin' Star in Paint Your Wagon, as Ben Rumsen.
This is just the way he sang it then.
Beautiful man.
RIP, Lee, thanx for your service, and thanx so very much, for the magic, music, and memories.
Love Lee Marvin & love Paint Your Wagon one of my all time favourite movies ❤
Agree!
What a voice. Great actor.
That was unexpected, and cool to see.
Paint Your Wagon is one of the best movies Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood were in. They both sang in it. So glad my dad had me watch it.
was filmed in Oregon during the spring rainy season Clint and Seeburg had a small role in the film''''............PS ''THATS SHOW BIZZ
@@alexshatzko1381Clint and Seeburg had a small role!!!
They were the freakin main characters along with Marvin!!!
Paint Your Wagon is a darned good movie. It has several great stories woven into it.

Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood...in 1 of the best musicals
Wow! Never seen that movie but am goin to now especially since this man is goin to sing it and that accompaniment!! Love men’s choirs beautiful!
I remember him singing this in the movie Paint Your Wagon. I love that movie!
❤sadly missed!RIP Marvin 🙏🏻🦋💜
In 1962 my parents took me to the cinema to see The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and I fell madly in love with Liberty. That crush I had has stayed with me all my life. :}
I absolutely love his voice. It’s true and strong. An American war hero! High praise for the men’s choir as well.
Thanks for posting this! We played this song at my Dad's funeral - it was so appropriate. Lee Marvin did a great job, even though he didn't want to!
In 1970 I was traveling around the world so I felt like I could relate to the song and of course Lee Marvin was one of my few Heroes he was a man among men
I have considered having this song played at my funeral. But before or after I am buried I haven't decided on as of yet.
Effortless ❤
One of if not most favourite actor
Marvelous !
Thanks a lot! This is very good. Reminds me of my dad. He's gone for twenty years ago. Still miss him every now and then.
Only people make you cry.😭😭😭😭😭😭
OUTSTANDING! Salute!
Great! Spectacular Nelson Riddle arrangement! Yes, it’s lip synced, but the original recording pairs nicely with the camera work. I agree with everyone who says that Lee Marvin isn’t a singer, but he’s perfect for this, rolling out low Dflats for days. It’s his natural speaking voice, and it suits the world-weary yet wistful lyrics to a T. And I think he stays very much in character, for someone who’d seen it all and done it all, (like been in a war). Long way from being a grunt in WWII to wearing a tux on Ed Sullivan. Bravo!
Christopher Lee covered this and does an amazing job. If Lee had become a full time singer he could have given J.D. Summer a run for his money.
Simply timeless.
Just found this superb video god bless you lee marvin😊
"Paint Your Wagon" has remained one of my favorite films, even over 50 years later. Lee Marvin was perfect as Ben Rumson in that movie, and this arrangement of "Wand'rin Star" by Mr. Marvin and the Yale Glee Club was the way Ben Rumson would've wanted it sung !
I read the book years ago. That whole cast was perfect
Remember the scene where a grave was being dug and they found gold? And the mourners sent the deceased flying up in the air? Sorry. I have my Mother's sense of humor because I still laugh at that.
Yes, a great and under rated movie. It had all the style and production values of the golden era of the western. The locations, the costumes, the wagons and horses. And the great music. Notably, the leads (Marvin and Eastwood) do their own singing. Also notably, this is a western where nobody kills anybody. Also, this film captures the spirit and optimism of the gold rush era. The loneliness, the remoteness. I never get tired of this movie!
Totally magnificent. Thanks for the post.
This is definitely a classic, but mostly because of it's context. As Great as Lee Marvin was (RIP), he wasn't much of a singer.Still, I love this song.
Judging from some of the comments, I guess today's people need to recondition themselves not to expect every Caucasian man to sound like Adam Levine. This is awesome, and Lee Marvin was super cool. My grandad and my uncle's were like Lee Marvin. He was my John Wayne.
I love him
Lee... You did Good 💎💎💎💎💎
One can tell from his demeanor that he is an ex-military man. Wonderful voice and musicality
Legend.. I loved his acting
One of the great Western songs of all time.
Thank you Lee Marvin I love this song fantastic all the participants
