@@manfredbley1908 I've beeen to your fine city in the 1970s and 80s. But these days, it is the German people that will need all the luck and help from God that they can get. So sad, really it is.
Back in 1983, a friend and I went to a bar in Tucson, AZ and Lee Marvin was drinking there. My friend knew him, so we spent the afternoon getting drunk with him. Wish we had cell phone cameras back then.
The man was not just a World War II combat veteran. He was a genuine badass Marine. Look up his history His army did things modern Armies don't do anymore.
As a kid in 1970 I was given this 45 and I fell in love with it. This amazing appearance pre-dates the release of the single across the world. Although the single would not become a hit in the United States, it would reach #1 in UK five months after this appearance and kept the Beatles "Let It Be" out of the #1 spot.
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast on TV. About 40 years later, I met a fellow, a medical doctor in Seattle, who said he had been a member of the glee club at Yale and had backed up Lee Marvin on the Ed Sullivan show. He said Marvin was a pretty abrasive guy, and appeared to have had a drink or 2 before rehearsal.
I was involved in campus radio in the late 1970s at university in Kingston Ontario. My friend Ian Byers often did the last shift of the broadcast day and he'd play this song before the closing national anthem and sign off. Ian was a complicated guy, fiercely dedicated to his friends, idiosyncratic, eclectic in his musical tastes (country music and jazz) and more than a little bit on the volatile side. We was truly a wandering star. His wife passed away a year before he did, and we interred their ashes together at a ceremony at a little country church. I played this song for him/them at the graveside on my iPhone and Bluetooth speaker. Keep wanderin' old friend.
I miss Lee Marvin. I'm an older woman and always thought, that Lee was extremely YUMMY! I loved him in, "Paint Your Wagon." Great movie with Clint Eastwood.
It was at the Ritz ballroom I was asked to dance by a very smart man and every time I hear this song I can see him that was 50 years ago I'm now nearly 83 and can still remember the feeling even though I never saw him again 😔
Judging from some of the comments, I guess today's people need to recondition themselves not to expect every Caucasian man to sound like Adam Levine. This is awesome, and Lee Marvin was super cool. My grandad and my uncle's were like Lee Marvin. He was my John Wayne.
Such a talented guy. And I don’t think this song should have been sung by anybody that has a good singing voice .it needed to be sung by somebody that sounded tired, worn out, and just a wanderer.
In 1962 my parents took me to the cinema to see The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and I fell madly in love with Liberty. That crush I had has stayed with me all my life. :}
Who would have thought at the time that Lee Marvin singing “Wandering Star” was a actual hit in the UK. That would be the reason that Ed had him on his show 😅. Happy New Year 🎉!

What is so very interesting about this piece is that while Mr. Marvin obviously cannot sing yet he manages to completely hold the attention of the listener. He simply manages to convince the listener that he believes in what he is singing. Completely memorable.
This is definitely a classic, but mostly because of it's context. As Great as Lee Marvin was (RIP), he wasn't much of a singer.Still, I love this song.
In 1970 I was traveling around the world so I felt like I could relate to the song and of course Lee Marvin was one of my few Heroes he was a man among men
Gee, he cleans up nice, doesn't he? Watch Mr. Marvin sing Wandetin' Star in Paint Your Wagon, as Ben Rumsen. This is just the way he sang it then. Beautiful man. RIP, Lee, thanx for your service, and thanx so very much, for the magic, music, and memories.
"Paint Your Wagon" has remained one of my favorite films, even over 50 years later. Lee Marvin was perfect as Ben Rumson in that movie, and this arrangement of "Wand'rin Star" by Mr. Marvin and the Yale Glee Club was the way Ben Rumson would've wanted it sung !
Remember the scene where a grave was being dug and they found gold? And the mourners sent the deceased flying up in the air? Sorry. I have my Mother's sense of humor because I still laugh at that.
Yes, a great and under rated movie. It had all the style and production values of the golden era of the western. The locations, the costumes, the wagons and horses. And the great music. Notably, the leads (Marvin and Eastwood) do their own singing. Also notably, this is a western where nobody kills anybody. Also, this film captures the spirit and optimism of the gold rush era. The loneliness, the remoteness. I never get tired of this movie!
Big fan of Lee Marvin. Great actor with a broad range of talents from comedy to drama and action. Among my favorites were Dirty Dozen, Point Break, Paint Your Wagon, Cat Ballou, and Emperor of the North. Gone well before his time.
Great! Spectacular Nelson Riddle arrangement! Yes, it’s lip synced, but the original recording pairs nicely with the camera work. I agree with everyone who says that Lee Marvin isn’t a singer, but he’s perfect for this, rolling out low Dflats for days. It’s his natural speaking voice, and it suits the world-weary yet wistful lyrics to a T. And I think he stays very much in character, for someone who’d seen it all and done it all, (like been in a war). Long way from being a grunt in WWII to wearing a tux on Ed Sullivan. Bravo!
Lee Marvin, might not wanted to sing this song but I hope he realises he made a lot of people happy that he did.
If he realizes it,it'll be from heaven. He passed in 1987.
He knew before he died, it was one of only 3 or 4 things in his life he was really proud of 😉@@xScooterAZx
Yes
Never will be any more great actors like him and the actors of the past.
LEE MARWIN offers himself as an actor, he were GENUINE
They don't make actors like Lee Marvin anymore. Great clip - THANKS for posting.
Thanks for your kind words of my family member
The Killers ! The dirty Dozen. Best movies . And Robert Mitchum in CAPE FEAR and YAKUZA Fantastic Movies.
Lerner and Loewe wrote this musical before My Fair Lady. Such depth and talent. Great classic.
I have heard good singers try to sing this song, but NO ONE has ever done it as well as Lee Marvin! Such a classic!
Protože Lee Marvin nebyl dobrý zpěvák. Proto to má tu nesmrtelnou atmosféru.
Thank you! The great Lee Marvin singing his hit song from Paint Your Wagon, truly awesome to me and others. Rest In Eternal Peace.
yeah, and Clint Eastwood talked to the trees 😅
So was "Paint Your Wagon" the movie's title ?
Yes.
You can see it on TH-cam now!
Sempre Fi I read he also he served with Bob Keshen ( Captain Kangaroo )
Paint Your Wagon is one of the few movies I can see over and over again. And enjoy.

Lee Marvin was the ultimate bad-ass. He puts all of today's action stars to shame.
When men were real men... brilliant actor and of course real war hero RIP Lee
May God bless his Soul!
You're so right
This song with Lee Marwin was played at my husbands funeral. It fitted him like a glove. ❤
I thought he did a great job! Perfect song for someone who never and didn’t want to sing! I love it.
This discribes me, after I retired and my wife died, I traveled the roads of North America for the next 25 years. Enjoyed every second of it.

This proof of what I have always thought. Music is a magical moment in time.without Lee Marvin's voice this song would mean nothing.
Lee couldn't hold a note but he certainly made this tune his own. It was one of my dad's favourite songs it's also one of mine.
Yes, he gave it life :)
Give it up to the Yale glee club. They were absoluteky fantastic and meshed well with Lee's voice.
