When my mother died I was a very young man. I had fallen in love with films when she and my beloved big sister took me to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when I was only three years of age. The day after my mother was buried I went to see Dr Shivago to escape horrible reality. The beauty of the cinematography and in particular the gorgeous musical score eased my loneliness and pain. I have always loved this film like an old and comforting friend.
Allan, I know what you mean when you describe this movie. I saw this movie when it first came out when I was in 6th grade and did not really understand it. I saw it again when I was in college at age 16, studying Russian. It opened up the whole world for me. There it all was.... do this day, it is both haunting and familiar to me. I translated a chapter from the original Dr. Zhivago which was written by Boris Pasternak, a black market book in the Soviet Union, for my Russian final. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel piece prize in 1958 but had to decline it due to the Soviet pressure as it depicted the socialist revolution from 1905 to WW II.He passed away in 1960 and never had a chance to see his beautiful work of art or his poetry loved by so many. ♥️
There is that opening scene where his mother is being buried. The lid placed down and nailed shut. Pretty powerful and it's been decades since I last saw it. Also when supreme court chief justice John Roberts was asked what his favorite movie was during confirmation, he stated that it was Dr. Zhivago. Another interesting story is how the novel was smuggled out to the west during the soviet period.
@@musoangeloThe opening scene you speak of as well as the haunting lyrics of the theme song say it all in relationship to the incredible finality and sadness in the loss of those we love.

I watched this beautiful film in 1969 when I was 18. The music, the landscapes, two gorgeous actors and a story that many lovers have experienced in being separated by the times they lived in. They don't make films like that anymore!!
In my 75 years, over 50 spent watching movies, I still feel this is the best movie I have ever seen in my life. Heart wrenching at times, exciting at times, maddening at times. The cinematography is stunning, the acting was wonderful, in my book, it's the number one movie of all time. My next favorite is Margin Call, because it doesn't need computer effects, and the acting was brilliant.
I just love Dr. Zhivago, in my book the "best " movie ever made was " On The Waterfront", Charlie, you're my brother, you should have protected me, I could have been somebody, instead I'm a bum................." I think best lines ever written!
I just marvel at the actors' ability to express such primal emotions and feelings of grief, love and despair, without screaming, yelling, contorting their faces and it made the scenes so much more poignant.
Beautiful music score and breathtaking cinema photography, superb acting too. I saw this movie as a young guy in my twenties. Now I am nearing 78. It still moves me so much.

I was 14 when I first saw the movie. What a poignant scene...breaking the glass of the window to see his love ones riding away towards the horizon and completely fading away from his view...and then he bow his head accepting the sad reality that it may be the last glimpse he will have of her on this earth. Oh my God...simply unforgettable.
A killer of emotion. And he never did see them - only at the end, when he couldn't get off the streetcar and just . . . died. "Someday my love, there will be songs to sing, although the snow covers the hope of spring." A true Russian song.
The most God awful scene was when after many years after this he sees Lara from a bus, and as he rushes off the bus to try to flag her down walking of him he has a massive heart attack, dies and she doesn't even know it. Oh did I cry as you scream out turn around. My favorite movie, this and somewhere in time.
God Julie Christie is such beautiful woman & still is. Saw a photo of her not too many years ago & she still has that beauty. Also there is gratefulness too. I saw her in film from a Thomas Hardy tale: I think it was "Far from the Madding Crowd"; beautiful in that too! Aah Julie you wrenched my heart out when I saw Zhivago. What beauty. PJS
@@petersmith9077 , I think the same of Julie Christie. She was a stunningly beautiful woman. I would rate her level of beauty as a rarity. Maybe one of the top 10 most attractive women I can think of no matter in person, print, television, film, or video.

A masterpiece of cinema. Won 5 Oscar awards, surely deserved more. Amazing and Clean Actors: Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, as well as the others. Beautiful song by Maurice Jarre, Lara theme. Deserves to be in the Top 10!
I have seen this movie many times. Being originally from former Soviet Union, my family, my parents, loved that movie. This theme is the best and most classic. I was asked to play it at some events when I was DJing. I listened to it numerous times and too many to mention. It is a beautiful melody, but also the movie, the classic, it is just absolutely incredible. Loved everything about it and of course, the music.
My late mother took me to see this when I was 6. I still thank her for it because I had my first experience with an 'adult' movie and I loved it. I had a mature interest in movies at a young age
They sure don't - there was a certain something about them that was always felt by the audience - that certain something, call it what you may, has long vanished
One of the most poetic film ever. The scenery, the story, The beauty of the siberian winter is exceptional. David Lean is my favorite. His sensitivity is huge. All his films are exceptional..
The scene at the end as Yuri runs through the now cold, empty, and frozen house to symbolise the end of a warm and happy love story is utterly heartbreaking 💔 💔💔💔
Each time I look at it I get tears into my eyes and when I hear the music of Maurice Jarre I could cry on this Theme, this so melancholic I’ve got no words to say ❤️
I was 20 when I first watched this movie and had fallen in love with Julie Christie. To this day, I can't forget her beautiful face becoming golden and ethereal by sunlight.

Omar Sharif was incredibly handsome, particularly as Yuri Zhivago, and I am back dreaming again. Listenning to the music makes me want to watch the movie all over again for the 20th time, NEVER want to let it go.
I can't find any fault with this masterpiece: acting, music, cinematography, script and directing. It will never be repeated. Thank you so much to everybody who contributed to this unique production. I have lived, worked and loved in the USSR. This brings back so many wonderful memories.
This was my FAVORITE MOVIE for yrs and yrs. It still is. Now in 2023 I see little things that look a bit dated, but not much. It is such a masterpiece. Listening to the music alone fills me with such emotion.
This is my favorite movie! The music, the scenery, the actor and actress expressions, the music are more than words! My tears flowed every time I watch this scene!
Doctor Jivago was the very first film that allowed me to discover that Cinema can be ART... Whenever I watch it, I have the very same goose pimples that I experience in front of or during any great painting, sculpture or musical masterpiece. It is one of the very few stories where the film beats the novel... it is truly unforgettable in every respect!
What a magnificent film Doctor Zhivago is! A film for the ages. Great acting by everybody involved, and the music is superb. Lara's theme being much of a central meaning in the film. I was very impressed with Omar Sharif and the special character he was able to portrait.
Sorry to spoil the fun but Lara had an affair with her mother's Lover(a much older man) when she was a student. Then, despite the fact that Lara is married , she became Dr. Zhivago"s mistres even though she knew that Zhivago was married to Tonya and had two kids!
Happy Birthday Omar Sharif! You were such a good actor! But you will always be Doctor Zhivago to me! You were so good in the role and I really love this film Such romance! Such history! The music touches every being in my soul! They don't make films like this anymore. They don't make actors like you anymore either. You are so missed.
This movie for me, is the most memorable love story of all time. The acting and of course the music. It would be great if Utube would show it. I’m sure it would impact everyone who hasn’t seen it and for those that have, a wonderful remembrance.

One of my top movies. I'm depressed for days after watching this movie. When a story takes you through a character's lifetime you become deeply absorbed in what the person is experiencing, especially with a tragic end. David Lean's expansive panoramic scenes are unmatched still today as well as the lovely theme song.
Best acting performance, performed by one of the most beautiful and emotional actress, with the best music. Nothing compares to you, Julie Lara Christie
Omar Sharif has never really been truly honoured for his masterful, tender, restrained portrayal of Zhivago (one critic at the time, I think, called the performance 'wooden' - hardly!). There had been talk of Paul Newman taking the role, which would have led to a very different film (including scenes with him and Rod Steiger chewing up the scenery in a method acting showdown, perhaps?), not necessarily a lesser one, just different...Newman's cerebral, angry, 'American-ness' might have thrown the rhythm in a different way (note that Steiger IS the only American in the cast...the outsider...a deliberate choice?); who can say? (How would 'Jaws' read with Sterling Hayden as Quint and Jan Michael Vincent as Hooper?). In an interview years after the film Sharif spoke of how Lean asked him to underplay the role because Yuri has to carry the whole film; he is a witness to everything going on around him. To have a Romantic Russian with tempestuous emotions might work in the pages of fiction but the rhythms and demands of storytelling in cinema are quite different - and Lean knew this. Lara is the emotional core of the film - and Lean lets Christie (and Geraldine Chaplin and Tom Courteney and Rod Steiger and Klaus Kinski) play with all her passions (and Freddie Young lights her in all sorts of marvellous ways that reveal her devastating beauty - look at that slash of light across her eyes!), but Yuri has to stay solid, an observer. Such an aesthetic choice might not be to everyone's taste but I think it works very well: Lean (and Robert Bolt) knew that WE essentially are Yuri - we see what he sees, he is a conduit through which we fall in love with Lara, feel guilty over Tonya, reject the opportunism of Komorvsky, feel affection for Yevgraf; this cannot be cluttered with too much of the personal - Sharif/Yuri is an idealist at its most pure and sensitive. He offers commentary that is rich poetically, but spare in its capturing of situations ("Have you ever loved a woman", "I hate what you believe in but not enough to kill you for it.") Lean and Bolt also knew that film is a form of nudity and this nudity must be carefully draped: we never actually see or hear any of Zhivago's poetry - it is left to our imagination to build an idea of what it is like (any examples presented would only be disappointing, no matter how well written).
Julie Christy was so beautiful, I dreamed of looking like her. I also dreamed of Omar Sharif. I can’t watch it any more,as it ended sadly. Apart from my youthful fantasy’s. It was a wonderful movie.
This song was my dear husband's favorite and he always used to sing it. I will always think of him especially when I hear this lovely song. My dear love passed away on the 29th May this year and I miss him so much A Oosthuizen South Africa

I can't remember how many times I watched this evergreen film with its stunning scenarios, realities, directions and most of all the superb acting of all the actors adding an ever enjoyable theme music! Omar Sharif, what a handsome Egyptian actor, and Julie Christie, what an angel :) Too much beauty in this scene.
Proud to be Egyptian because pf Sharif and 1 of the 7 wonders :)
Mr. Sharif and I share the same birthday - April 10. My all-time favourite actor.
Did you know Omar Sharif's son played a young Yuri when his mother was laid to rest in the cemetery.
One of the top 5 best movies of all time....great acting, music, scenery and a great plot.
Yes, Somewhere in Time… another beautiful movie but heartbreaking. One of my all time favorites!
PJS
I once had a lover who said to me as we parted for what we knew would maybe forever "I will be your Zhivago."
@@petersmith9077 , I think the same of Julie Christie. She was a stunningly beautiful woman. I would rate her level of beauty as a rarity. Maybe one of the top 10 most attractive women I can think of no matter in person, print, television, film, or video.
I love Somewhere In Time! Haven't seen Dr. Zhivago yet
have seen this movie in its entirity 47 times! it created my love of daffodils ...and of Julie Christie!!It This movie did what great movies are intended to do. David Lean was a master!
Exquisite! I feel so fortunate to have been born in the Era of when Movies were Movies. With great storyline & Scores.😢
Fantastic movie. I watch it once a year. Julie and Omar was the perfect match for this epic story.
And now, Hollywood can only produce movies like Barbie. What an embarassment
To me still one of the best movies of all time...
Actors, music and atmosphere.
And oh yes... good direction and camerawork!
Best glance I've ever seen in cinema history
There are movies and then there are great classics. This is a timeless classic ❤️
A masterpiece of cinema. Won 5 Oscar awards, surely deserved more. Amazing and Clean Actors: Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, as well as the others. Beautiful song by Maurice Jarre, Lara theme. Deserves to be in the Top 10!
So... the best
It's a shame that it did not win the 1965 best picture. Although Sound of Musc was also a great film, my vote goes to Dr Zhivago.
The music stayed with me for all of life.
Same here.
As the father so the son!
Oh my this is the most moving comment ever.
Me too its heart breaking and yet makes me wish and imagine
I've got the sound track and it's so beautiful 😊
As close to faultless as any movie could be.An absolute masterpiece.
I love Gone with the wind and Dr. Zhivago. Both masterpieces, for all times. 2024
What about the country where you have lived many years ago? No memories?
Will always be the saddest and most beautiful film of all time and who could ever be as gorgeous as Omar Sharif.. those soulful eyes. 🥲🩷🩷🩷
My late mother took me to see this when I was 6. I still thank her for it because I had my first experience with an 'adult' movie and I loved it. I had a mature interest in movies at a young age
Julie Christie was breathtaking in this move. The epitome of beauty and cool, chic femininity. They don't make women like her any more.
They sure don't - there was a certain something about them that was always felt by the audience - that certain something, call it what you may, has long vanished

A blast of talent from the Russian Pasternak. I actually fell for Geraldine Chaplin more than most people. All these years it brings back the Romance!
Best war time love story I've ever seen on the screen. Tragic and beautiful! Stunning scenery, acting, and soundtrack, also.
Doctor Zhivago....A GREAT book....A GREAT movie!
Omar Sharif, a great looking actor! 🌹
This film has an outstanding cast, excellent soundtrack and is a tragic epic in every sense of the word. IMO one of the top 10 films ever made.
Each time I look at it I get tears into my eyes and when I hear the music of Maurice Jarre I could cry on this Theme, this so melancholic I’ve got no words to say ❤️
I loved it so much as a young girl, that my father bought me a music box with "Lara's Song"
I was 20 when I first watched this movie and had fallen in love with Julie Christie. To this day, I can't forget her beautiful face becoming golden and ethereal by sunlight.
Desh: I'm guessing about 3 million 20 year olds had fallen in love with Julie Christie.
Immagino che un po' tutti si siano innamorati di Julie Christie
Omar Sharif as Yuri Zhivago...no man could ever appear more handsome. ...Beautiful movie on endless levels. Nothing since compares.
This is my all time fav movie. Everytime it came on tv my mom & i would watch it... It came out the year i was born and havent stopped watching kt yet... Thanks for this scene upload!
Najbolji, najlepši film koji sam IKAD gledao u davna, davna vremena kada se u filmu uživalo u tami bioskopa najbolji glumci, muzika, priroda, scenario SVE!
Omar Sharif was incredibly handsome, particularly as Yuri Zhivago, and I am back dreaming again. Listenning to the music makes me want to watch the movie all over again for the 20th time, NEVER want to let it go.
He made a lot of ladies and young girls fall in love with him...he was beautiful.
I remember my mom and dad seeing this in cinema scope. Mom absolutely loved this movie. She bought the vinyl record and I played it over and over.
I can't find any fault with this masterpiece: acting, music, cinematography, script and directing. It will never be repeated. Thank you so much to everybody who contributed to this unique production. I have lived, worked and loved in the USSR. This brings back so many wonderful memories.
Truly a wonderful yet sad in a lot of ways movie. Julie Christie was magnificent!!
Julie Christie haunted me with her beauty in this movie.
What a movie .i was a young teenager when i saw this it was brand new ..im still in love with lara...going on 63..

Mesmerizingly Beautiful. Hard for anyone who loves films to forget this one.
Brilliant film and the acting was sublime. The ending gets me every time.
One of my favorite epic movies. Breathtakingly beautiful down to every scene and actor. This is an especially poignant scene. Love it. 🥰
Julie Christie was stunning. You cannot take your eyes off her in every scene she's in. Still looks great in her 80s.
A true masterpiece of a film. The soundtrack is beautifully written telling the story of war, love, and Lara......
NOTHING can replace the gorgeousness and flawless execution of this TIMELESS film!! RIP to the gorgeous Omar Sharif, and blessings to Julie Christie.
Merci Bechir, tu es grand
It gets the tears flowing every time I see this movie, one of my all time favorites!
What a magnificent film Doctor Zhivago is! A film for the ages. Great acting by everybody involved, and the music is superb. Lara's theme being much of a central meaning in the film. I was very impressed with Omar Sharif and the special character he was able to portrait.
My favorite movie of all time!!! I named my daughter Sasha too, out of no where! Julie and Omar are flawless!
One of my favorite movies of all times. I can watch it over and over again. The scenery and music is amazing.
I was named Lara after this Theme... I am about to watch the movie as I now am curious why my parents were so in love with it
I hope the movie, and its tremendous effect on many people, gave you the answer to your curiosity ☺️
I was Named Larisa after my mom watched this movie...
Me too! I was born in 1982 and my mom loved the movie so much she named me Lara!
Sorry to spoil the fun but Lara had an affair with her mother's Lover(a much older man) when she was a student. Then, despite the fact that Lara is married , she became Dr. Zhivago"s mistres even though she knew that Zhivago was married to Tonya and had two kids!
@AbrahamUtrera-t7p True but still a great movie..
Fantastic movie. I first saw it in high school in the '60s. Still a great movie.
Lara in the form of Julie Christie is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.
I always thought his wife in the movie was prettier and when he cheated I didn't like the movie anymore, and I was just a kid when I saw this movie on the big screen

Because he is not Jewish.
Have you noticed how Hollywood played their games in the past 50+ years?
Unless you are Jew (or switched your religion to Judaism, such as Michael Jackson, Liz Tailor etc.) you have no chance in Hollywood. Even today (2019)

One of my top movies. I'm depressed for days after watching this movie. When a story takes you through a character's lifetime you become deeply absorbed in what the person is experiencing, especially with a tragic end. David Lean's expansive panoramic scenes are unmatched still today as well as the lovely theme song.
Arguably the best film ever made. Great plot, great story line, incredibly great photography and incredibly great music and direction.
The music and stunning cinematography are what turn this from a love triangle flick to a cinema classic
The entire movie was the best scene. This is my favorite movie of all time. TCM playing it this Sunday, March 5th.♥️

Best acting performance, performed by one of the most beautiful and emotional actress, with the best music. Nothing compares to you, Julie Lara Christie

I saw this movie when it first came out. I still think it was one of the greatest movie I have ever seen. Seeing this scene gave me goosebumps.
Thank you for reminding us of this exquisite story. . . and, yes, the music is so romantic . . .
Thank you so much for this. Saw this movie as a teenager, and I will say it changed me in many ways. Breathtaking film
Incredible commentary. Well put!
Totally agree Sharif and Christie were wonderful
Wooden?! Hopefully the critic was fired. Sharif was absolutely superb.
A very nice piece of writing mate....
Thank you for a very thoughtful and real commentary
Julie Christy was so beautiful, I dreamed of looking like her. I also dreamed of Omar Sharif. I can’t watch it any more,as it ended sadly. Apart from my youthful fantasy’s. It was a wonderful movie.
