what I have always found interesting about the box, the test of pain and self control. Is that I know what my reaction would be. I recently in the last year or so almost lost every finger on my right hand after doctors put my arm in in a cast and left me alone for several hours after I had lost all feeling in my arm. My fingers were the only thing I could feel. The burning...like someone had lit my fingers on fire while ants crawled all over and bit and stung my fingers in different places all at once. All the while I felt like they were freezing. I was dealing with a cold sweat at the same time, body tremors, shivering, and a sense of disorientation. I still have my arm, but have incurred permanent nerve damage in my fingers and hand because of it.
An experience that's testing for sure. About 15 years ago, I made the bad choice of going down a cross country skiing track on a cold night after forgetting my gloves and face shield. It resulted in severe frostbite where amputation and skin grafting was on the table. I was able to keep my hands and even had a successful career in the Army since but to this day I am incapable of feeling temperatures in my arms from the elbow down or my face. I feel pressure levels but no hot or cold and it's resulted in me getting burned badly a few times because I had no idea I was touching something burning hot. While I was recovering from the initial frostbite and the flesh on my forearms and hands literally dying and falling off it was sheer agony though.

When you first heard Paul use the voice, the overdub was dominated at first my his mothers voice, and then the mother superiors voice. Indicating he is using their techniques as taught from teacher to pupil. Once he started his transformation into the kwizatz haderach his was the dominant voice.
A brilliant analysis of the sisterhood from its inception through to its merger with the honoured matres. While not relying too heavily on BH’s work you expertly navigated through all of the topics from training, purpose and of course abilities. Thank you.
The sisterhood is one of the most powerful groups in the setting, individually each one then is able to take of entire squads of sardakar without been touched, they literally lead the galaxy by the nose having agents in almost every main house and yet the woman playing the Lady Jessica somehow thinks Dune was a sexist portrayal of them that her and the director “”fixed”” in the new version of Dune. I don’t know if she didn’t bother to read the book or just somehow missed the whole point of what the Bene Gesserit are about, they make the idea of a cats paw look like barging into room screaming while painted in neon colours and stabbing all the guests just to subtly move a chess piece, they have been manipulating all the great houses for hundreds of years to make Paul (well Paul was meant to be a girl and was meant to be his some but you know what I mean) a power so great it can control all the stars and the plan was to have a leash on him with them holding the lead.
Loved this. I find the Bene Gesserit the most fascinating group in the Dune universe. Loved the books involving the war between the them and the Honored Matres.

I like how Dune at it's core doesn't try to rely on some mystical superpowers, radioactive animal bites, magic, the force, warp, or divinity, but instead on the simple power of the human mind + a drug or two. That all it does is simply push Shao-Lin or Fakir techniques to a greater perfection with the use of exotic drugs. The movie's portrayal of the Gom Jabar showed Jessica shaking and weeping, which bothered me. The book portrayed the BG as having unbelievable control of their body and emotions under any circumstances. Jessica did not fall apart during the Gom Jabar.
BG would appear to us as emotionless androids... unless they were executing a plan. Only other BG can see the subtle signs that a BG let a little emotion show. Doesn't film very well...
@@byronbranch4645 Bottom line, OP is right. That was a liberty taken by the movie. She did NOT cry or shake in the book during the test. The point that she does not break down in that moment is one of the book's first glimpses into the resolve of the Bene Gesserit. That would have run counter to what Herbert was trying to say.
Really miss your, Philosophy Of, series. Not that anything is wrong with these analysis. It's much appreciated as I never had the luxury of mindlessly escaping into fantastic tales. So anything commonplace to everyone else is foreign to me. Although the underlying messages weren't known at the time as it passes I'm hyper-aware how intelligent and altruistic these fictional worlds were. Yet no one saw or heeded the warnings predicted. Every nightmare has came true. We're on fast track to collapse and I never thought I would live to witness so many accept their, "master", happily. I wouldn't waste the time either. Thanks again.
I was spending a couple minutes listening in repeat mode to the Dune theme "Holy War" by Hans Zimmer on my playlist, simply because I felt the urge to listen it. How ironic.
I don't think you made it clear enough that the first goal of the Sisterhood was to preserve humanity as a species, to prevent our extinction by outside forces, and guide the species to "maturity." Like a mother who is determined that her children will survive. That was the purpose of the Kwisatz Haderach: to access the genentic memory of the Y chromosone, and use prescience to see future timelines to avoid extinction. That's why Leto spent three and a half thousand years breeding for a mutation that would make humans unseeable by "future" sight. If humans could not be predicted, could not be seen in future timelines, they could avoid being attacked by alien forces. And I do think the Bene Gesserit did fear that eventually, humanity would encounter non-human intelligences that would seek to destroy them. The BG took a really long view of history and their mission. The Kwisatz Haderach wasn't the ultimate goal, he was a way to see to the survival of the human race. That's also why Leto din't destroy the Sisterhood. They had to be reminded of that further goal, and taken down a peg or two. Three and a half thousand years of boring "Peace" would be imprinted in humanity's and the Sisterhood's genetic memory. Humanity would never again long for a "Golden Age." The first "Golden Age" with machines almost destroyed it, Leto saw to it there would never be another "lapse."
9:08 I LOVE the original looks to be honest. Does anyone know who drew them or worked on the designs/wardrobe illustrations? I feel like each of them are a combination of different cultures/styles. For instance, The Reverend Mother on the left gives me a "Mongolian-Aztec" vibe with the headwrap and line placements. Lady Jessica gives me a "Nordic-Comanche" feeling. Then on the right for House Corrino totally gives a "Maori-Geisha" look. They're all awesome
The Bene Gesserit wrote those treatises at the exact same time as the Orange Catholic Ecumenism and the reorder of galactic religion. They are constantly brought up together and the "sisters" are both represented by a futuristic nun outfit and "an order" of such "nun" clothing wearing "sisters of the faith". It's pretty clear where _Frank_ was going with the imagery, even if _Brian_ has reordered this to de-stress this intrinsic (and tongue-in-cheek) link enough that it is seemingly ignored here.

What surprised more that the Voice was the total control of the body. How they can control every single muscle of the body and every function of the organ, that's why they were almost immune to poisons, that were of wide use. And make think that in a far future the humanity one day can conquer his own body. Not to that extend but I feel as a realistic goal.
I think the single best addition to the thematic universe was what its like to be the victim of the voice Such a great scene. It makes you wonder why they didnt do that in the original movie

If it was known that the Bene Gesserit had such powers of imprinting, who would anyone, in a position of power, accept a Bene Gesserit concubine or wife? It seems like such an acceptance would make one vulnerable to Bene Gesserit control, and thus no longer their own agent.
They didn't use it often because they knew that would happen. Only extremely dangerous people would be imprinted, like Feyd, and they wouldn't be aware of it, and the BG very rarely used it unless pressed by great need. Just death wouldn't be enough because BG don't really fear that since they often share their inner lives and thus exist in their Sisters. It would require a threat to the Sisterhood to make them use it. The fear of that distrust is why they hate the Honored Matres and call them whores. After all, the BG exists only to serve.
There is also the fact that they were undoubtedly *extremely* skilled lovers. Having perfect control over every single muscle would surely enhance the experience and might explain why they were highly sought for concubines and wives. A BG trained wife would be able to help you run a Great House as well, as they were trained in every discipline. They were generally loyal to their families unless directly ordered by the Sisterhood.

This might be the best summary of the history of the Bene Gesserit I've ever heard. Love this channel!
Glad you enjoy it!
Some of the most badass women in fiction nice to hear some more infomation on them. truly a scary combination of looks and brain, and even combat.
what I have always found interesting about the box, the test of pain and self control.
Bro, sue
At least you never have to work again, hospital will settle for a huge chunk of change if it was their fault you lost your fingers.
@@iandevine3063 They said ALMOST lost them. This isn't a guaranteed win the way people think it is. Medical malpractice is notoriously hard to prove and even if you get money, most of those doctors continue to practice- if they lose their license in one state, they can just move to another one (which is what happened to the doctor I experienced medical malpractice with, but not because of my suit).
Hard to get anyone at a hospital to testify against another in the hospital
When you first heard Paul use the voice, the overdub was dominated at first my his mothers voice, and then the mother superiors voice. Indicating he is using their techniques as taught from teacher to pupil.
Once he started his transformation into the kwizatz haderach his was the dominant voice.
Such a great point.
Thank you for introducing me to the dune universe! Your videos are gold!
You're so welcome!
Love how much detail and research you do for every video
Always hype seeing Film Comics upload
As someone whom has read ALL of the DUNE books (prequels included), I find this very well thought out.
As a kid my dad was a HUGE Dune fan.. I didn't need to read or watch (was forced to anyway) the dune series but it is absolutely an astounding story. There is much to have learned from the series and future-istic politics. Dune isn't for everyone and I absolutely recommend it to anyone with a mature mind, and openness to more than just a "story". The Dune movie trilogy made about 40yrs ago (I probably heavily butchered the date) is a great movie series if anyone wants to start there. Not the biggest fan of the new movie but would highly recommend.
What's wrong with the new one?
The TV miniseries you mean? That was 20 years ago not 40, Jesus Christ.
@@pseudonymousbeing987 no, the actual movies. I didn't even know there was a TV series unless that's what my dad was actually watching.. idk I never was interested in it but forced to by my family. You could be right..idk. it was was 22yrs ago the first episode was released. I googled it
@@kaii6216
It's two different miniseries. I think they're three episodes each and they do cover the original book trilogy but they're in the medium of 6 television episodes, not three movies.
@@pseudonymousbeing987 oh, I didn't know. Thank you. As an adult now I am starting to enjoy dune so I wanted to get back into it but my dad absolutely loathed the new movies so I was hesitant because he usually never wrong about movies we both share but I also have a more open mind.
YES!! Been waiting for this for a while!
Essentially, the sisterhood are the Jedi of the Dune universe.
It makes it all so real, you really get the sense that it's achievable IRL if only we discovered a plant or an animal that secrets a proper hallucinogen.
Shrooms mate lol

Someone in the comments of the newest Nerd Cookies vid recommended this vid….excellent breakdown!!
The way that scene with her was filmed was so terrifying almost felt like a Stanley Kubrick styled scene.
The original 1984 movie scene with the box was I think more intense with actress Sian Phillips playing the reverend mother spectacularly.
One of your best to date! Comprehensive and thoroughly entertaining.
Been subbed and enjoying every episode since back in the old days with the *absurdly* long intro 🤣
The movie's portrayal of the Gom Jabar showed Jessica shaking and weeping, which bothered me. The book portrayed the BG as having unbelievable control of their body and emotions under any circumstances. Jessica did not fall apart during the Gom Jabar.
I agree the movies portrayal of Jessica bothered me too.
BG would appear to us as emotionless androids... unless they were executing a plan. Only other BG can see the subtle signs that a BG let a little emotion show.
Doesn't film very well...
I think it was meant to show Jessica’s humanity. Any mother would be terrified knowing that her son might die.
@@athenaortiz94bingo. She genuinely loves Paul. He wasn't just a means to an end for Jessica
Thanks again.
more digging into the Honored Matres please. Theirs is a compelling story
Can you please make a video on league of extraordinary gentlemen... Your research is very thorough and your videos are very entertaining.
Yes that’s on the list D Gladiuz!
This was amazing… I’ve never even heard of this stuff before 😲
The Bene Gesserit wrote those treatises at the exact same time as the Orange Catholic Ecumenism and the reorder of galactic religion.

While the ideas about discipline and self control which eventually lead to superhuman powers are interesting, the Sisterhood on the whole is amoral and evil.
It is also interesting how really fragile their plans really are...I mean their centuries if not millenia old breeding program and schemes are messed up because one of their members - Jessica - fell in love and gave her lover a son he wanted instead of a daughter she was supposed to.
If only they knew about CRISPR. I heard the book was so old, people don't even know much about DNA back then. I don't even know if it was already discovered at the time.
@@nunyabiznes33 It was mentioned in the second book, specifically in the prologue, that the Bene Tleilax actually created their own Kwisatz Haderach through direct genetic manipulation (CRISPR in concept if not in name), but the resultant individual killed himself.
And also, given the emphasis placed on lineage in the Bene Gesserit order, I highly doubt that they would sanction the creation of their messiah through genetic manipulation.
@@rileybright-canton6888 They didn't even want to go the artificial insemination route. It was implied that that the sex act was integral to the genetic memory they were trying for.

I had to subscribe, the last 3 videos ive watched were fire, Nemisis, Nemisis:reloaded, and this
The slowing of the aging isn't hinted but stated directly in Children of Dune.
I think the single best addition to the thematic universe was what its like to be the victim of the voice

If it was known that the Bene Gesserit had such powers of imprinting, who would anyone, in a position of power, accept a Bene Gesserit concubine or wife? It seems like such an acceptance would make one vulnerable to Bene Gesserit control, and thus no longer their own agent.
Excellent point
Most of women of the ruling houses have Bene Gesserit training.
@@angellover02171 Indeed. The entire book is about subtle political power. It's fiction, but based on fact.
As someone who had infection of middle ear and went through pain of central nervous system, I felt Paul's pain.

I aways love your videos and this is a great one aswell but I do think all the artists their work should be credited when used.
Kind regards
Thanks for covering the Brian Herbert / Kevin J. Anderson books in this video! I really enjoy their books, but most channels that post Dune content avoid their works.
It's understandable why, though. They contradict/retcon the original series a lot. It is nice to see them covered, though. It'd be keen if someone did Dune deep dives and the video had some sort of label in the corner to mark which parts are Frank, which parts are Brian and Kevin, which parts are Encyclopedia, etc.
@@cevk For sure. Having read most of them I can kinda separate what was in the Frank books from Brian & Kevin's, but little annotations of where info is from would be really nice to see!
Sidenote: In regards to the retcons, I see them as exactly what Leto II taught. The only constant in the universe is change, and not one man (Frank Herbert) can rule the universe (The dune sequels past 6).
I keep telling myself I'll read this series someday. Just overwhelmed by where to start.
The begining bro
