  • Even though we're mid November the temperatures are in positive double digits, so I felt inspired to make a dish from warmer regions. A very simple dish with few ingredients that are well suited to make in a Trangia alcohol stove.
    Shakshuka - Ingredients for 1-2 servings
    1 tbsp rapeseed oil
    0,5 red bell pepper
    1 onion
    2 cloves of garlic
    1 tsp paprika powder
    0,5 tsp cumin
    0,25 tsp turmeric
    2 pinches of chili powder
    250 g tomatos, canned or fresh
    salt and pepper to taste
    2 eggs
    fresh koriander
    Pita or flat bread

    Hi, thank you! I enjoy your vids.
    I have used white gas stoves the past 35 years. I bought a Trangia 27-8 a month ago. Just to try an alcohol stove. I've tried it a couple times here at home (upstate ny, us) but havent taken out in the forest yet. Its quiet compared to gas. And i think it will be my preference for cooking. Anyway, i did this recipe (at home) for dinner tonight. Switched the egg for rice...very good! Fresh cilantro does not taste like soap to me, thankfully! :)

      Thank you Mitch! My journey is the oppsite one, spirit burners from childhood an now later in life starting to appreciate the pros of the gasburners. Most of the time I still use the spirit burners for their silence and simplicity, gas mostly comes in to play if flame control is cruicial.
      I can see that rice makes for a great combo with the Shakshuka. I'm glad you liked it and it's twice as good outdoors. Cheers!

    Ahh this made me unbelievably hungry.. I'll pause watching and continue the video after I've eaten 😆
    I never tried that recipe but it looks amazing. I will have to try it soon!
    And by the way I can't agree more on that bread being good! I grew up in the middle east and that type of bread is the main thing there. I've tried Liba "bröd" when I was visiting Finland and they've done a great job as it tastes the same as the bread I'm used to

    In shakshuka, we put choped and fryed aubergine together with other ingrediends you have shown except eggs. We don't put eggs in shaksuka. The recipe you have shown us is called "menemen" in my country. We often cook both of them. Cheers.

    • @RedswedeOutdoors

      Yes they are pretty similar. If memory serves menemen is quite popular in Turkey, both as breakfast (without onions) and for dinner. Both ones are delicious. Cheers Osman!

    I have found the perfect trangia kit.
    Buy the basic aluminum version you want, then replace one pot with duossal for acidic food like this (because it won’t be pitted), and to eat out of (because you won’t scratch it as easily). Also buy an Anodized pan, or non stick if you won’t use it that much. I bought a lid accessory and made my own cutting board/strainer. Made a pot cozy like the Soto navigator - rehydrating food, saving fuel while rice and pasta soak and cook, keeping it warm, holding the pot as a bow to eat out of. I made a hole into the windscreen so I could put on the simmer adjuster without removing the pot (Wind doesn’t affect it at all burns have to place it away in a specific direction, just like the bottom pan and it’s vent holes).
    I painted the windscreen grey with barbecue paint - added a few grams of weight but it protects it and doesn’t transfer heat as fast which is incredible to prevent my hands from freezing on it when grabbing it in really cold weather.
    I bring a DIY Kojin stove and Potsdam’s for boiling two pots at once and for preheating the trangia in freezing temps.
    I got silicone stretchy lids for the pots to protect them and so I can use the pots as Tupperware for carrying leftover meals and ingredients if needed.
    Trench lighter which has been used for decades, I just replace the ferro rod and rope as needed, often from people’s leftover lighters. - it also allows me to easily light the Trangia with the windscreen safely without burning myself.
    Wooden utensils to cook and eat with. Steaming rack/grill. Canvas bag. Powerade bottle for fuel because Trangia’s is expensive.

    A wonderful video and a new recipe for me. I’ve been happy cooking over a gas stove or fire for most of my outdoor life but recently bought a Trangia cook set as I really enjoy cooking good food outdoors whether hiking and motorcycle camping and the Trangia seems to offer new options for enjoying good food outdoors. Thanks for the inspiration. 🇨🇦

      @RedswedeOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Wesley! For sure, the Trangia gives you a wide range of options. The way I see it it's a Jack of all trades, and even if you go for a campfire you can still use the pots or kettles when cooking. Hope you like the Shakshuka if you try it out. Cheers!

    I saw a video a short while ago which demonstrated an easier way to place the simmer ring on the burner or to remove it from the burner. In the video they placed a magnet on the adjustable part of the simmer ring and used their fork or other metal utensil to move it on or off the burner.

    Also, thank you for including in your video a bit on the critical step: clean-up! And how the heck did you get that pot so clean so easily after cooking with eggs?! Was it the oil, low temperature, constant stirring and scraping?

    • @RedswedeOutdoors
      @RedswedeOutdoors  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a wonderful dish for sure. The clean-up wasn't to bad, you're right on the money that a combination of lower temp and stirring in the begining makes a difference. As for the eggs they never touch the pot so no chance for them to stick. Cheers!

    Second or third time watching this, so peaceful.
    Have forwarded to a friend to show them the Trangia alcohol burner setup.
    Were you able to do the meal and coffee on one fill? Would that be due to the simmer ring slowing the burn rate?

    • @RedswedeOutdoors
      @RedswedeOutdoors  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If memory serves me I managed both on a single fill, and I think it's largely due to the simmer ring. If I go all out on the burner it's enough for a bit over 15 minutes in the summer, a bit longer in winter. Cheers!

      You've got a point there. The most important thing in my opinion is to store it in a way that kids can't get to it since those children most prone to drink it by mistake can't read your label anyways.
