Layne had one of those one in a million unique voices and so many folks don't realize how hard it is to get THIS CLOSE to something like that AND to end up as the new singer for the band? Like the stars have to align for that sort of thing. Definitely underrated, super talented guy.
Layne would have had no voice by this time. These are difficult songs meant to showcase a singing phenomenon who was in his early 20's. It worked real good back then. Duvall is OK.
The problem is not Duvall being a bad singer, he is awesome and his voice is great, nothing wrong with him. The problem is that Layne was a god, his voice had every single element to be perfect. The power, the anger, the sweetness, so perfectly tuned, he was perfect for Alice in Chains, and AIC fits layne.
@@Speekies I don't know what you all guys are talking about. That 52 years old "kid" blew my brains out 2 days ago. You're missing big time, guys. Layne is dead, you gotta let go, or keep listening to the records and let us enjoy the great lives the band is still offering.
the crowd needs to show some respect. when i saw them in 2019 the crowd was amazing. they brought him in to honor layne, not replace him and people need to remember that. he in my opinion is the best person that could honor him.
Agreed. He sounds enough like Layne that he meshes well with Jerry on the harmonies, but not so much that he sounds like a tribute act. Case in point, James Hetfield is a great singer but when he tries to sing Would? with Jerry it doesn't sound good at all.
I'll never understand why people hate on Duvall. I guess some people can never accept that Layne is gone. Duvall is the perfect follow up, he has a similar range as Layne but has his own unique style, meaning the band can retain a similar sound without trying to replace or replicate Layne. We all wish that Layne was still here fronting the band but Duvall is a great vocalist and I haven't yet heard a better fit.
"He doesn't sound as good as Layne." 1. He's singing with a different style than Layne did. 2. He's in his late 40's in this performance, whereas Layne was in his early 20's. Maybe a 47-year-old Layne would sound worse.
Theo Stadick what people don’t realize is that IF layne was alive his voice would sound like complete SHIT. It was already sounding very rough towards the end of his life.
Layne stopped performing in 96 which was many years before his death. If he sounded “rough” it was because he was completely addicted to heroin, not because of a lack of ability. No disrespect to the current singer, but Layne was irreplaceable. It’s a karaoke act now, they should’ve just moved on to other things, but it’s Jerry’s band. I don’t begrudge him for soldiering on. For you to come out and hypothetically state that Layne would’ve sounded like absolute SHIT if he was alive just proves that what YOU don’t realize is how completely drugs can destroy someone.
Dude, this singer is not Layne...it's simple like that...and that's why he will never sound like Layne. People who are not able to understand that and keep insisting on comparison of 2 completely different human beings, are retarded.
@@ANGRLLL Drugs are certainly the reason Layne may have sounded "rough" toward the end -- it can still be argued that he showed just as impressive technique as ever at the end (MTV Unplugged '96 was that end as far as I'm concerned). Layne really showed how great he was -- to showcase such remarkable power and control without most of his teeth and an obviously fragile diaphragm. Singing is actually quite athletic in the physicality that it requires , so anyone can imagine how a person SHOULD sound with such an emaciated core. In my eyes, Layne Staley seemed to defy vocal physics, at least in that particular live performance. DuVall does a good job, the band is much different with him of course and it was always going to be no matter who stepped in.
It’s hard to listen to Duvall sing the old AIC songs from the Layne era because Layne was able to put out his immense pain into words. The emotions, holy shit you really felt it. That being said, he’s a badass vocalist and harmonizes great with Jerry. Layne’s gone. But I’m so glad that AIC has kept the music flowing. It was very hard for me at first but I had to step back and see that yes Layne is irreplaceable, but Layne wasn’t the entirety of AIC. There are 3 other members who made the group as well. Duvall got Jerry’s approval to move forward, and I think that’s all we need. AIC still fucking rocks you guys.
I agree 100%! It's took me a while to get use to Duvall even though he is doing a good job he still isn't Layne cuz I actually feel Layne's emotions in his lyrics(pain, anger, sadness, depression, etc. you name it) not so with Duvall(if any) but Layne is gone and all we have is what's left of him when he was here and cherish his good memories he will always be alive in our hearts. I honestly don't think I can capture the same feelings in DuVall's voice that I can with Layne nor he or any singer can ever replace Layne but Duvall is doing a very good job at keeping Layne's work, spirit, and legacy alive! Layne is a legend and legends NEVER DIES!!!
I just noticed the initials on the drums. LSMS Layne Staley Mike Starr .....*facepalm* derp! obvious. Surprised it took me a few minutes to figure it out.
Although in fairness to him he was trying to be clever. There was a certain level of intellect in the comment so I will take back "idiot", but it just wasn't funny, hence a comical fail.
Aidan Parle i agree with you on that part. for the longest i thought Jerry was fronting the band after learning about Layne's death, which of course was very sad an unfortunate. I'm only 20 years old,and I think it sucks that the singer of my favorite AIC song isn't around anymore. however I do like DuVall as frontman. it may be different but it's not bad.
DuVall: I have fucking goosebumps. What a voice. I miss the hell out of Layne. I saw them in the bay area with Layne. IT was PHENOMenal... I am still a fan. Top ten of favorite 90s rock bands. Keep playing. Please. Keep touring. Please.
Layne Staley is one hell of an act to follow, probably the best vocalist of his generation. The "new guy" is no slouch though and he should be proud of walking in the same footsteps.
If this was the only version of AIC that you knew and you saw them live, I don't believe you would be in the least bit disappointed. I saw them around this time last year and took it as a completely separate band from the early incarnation and it made the concert much more enjoyable not sitting there comparing every song to the original. Very good band in their own rite. Great job! If were truly honest anyway, Jerry is really the genius behind the music and the band anyway. He was the main songwriter and lyricist. So there you go.
+Chris J never compare :) even though i love the old times :) i can't say he is a bad "care taker" :D AIC all day everyday :D but i can say the sound is bad .. i blame the soundguys
+Skeeter skeet + Chris J......Jerry is seen as the Genius because Layne was the Muse, and is no longer here to defend his case. Granted, he had a serious drug problem that caused all kinds of devastation to all people in the cone......I'm also very happy that AIC continued after Layne died, but Chris is right.....They are a different band and we should treat them as such...bury your dead, but don't forget them.
I love how much fun Duvall is having, while all the other peeps looked outright pissed. But seriously, what are people's opinions of Duvall? He seemed to do a pretty good job there, but Layne's voice was that of a gods - it's impossible to compete with that.
People still crack on William but comeone---who really wants to try and step into replacing layne Staley for AIC? He does a great job. Nobody can replace Layne in my opinion, but we still have AIC because they went on and to be truthful, they sound good.
Very few vocalists can cover the vocal for "Man In A Box" but William Duvall smoked it, he's a great singer and I'm glad that we can still hear those great Alice In Chains tunes.
Excellent performance - as I'd expect from AIC. I've seen them three times since William Duvall joined, and they never disappoint. I just think it's a pity that some people refuse to see how brilliant Duvall is .. I realize that it's mainly because they loved Layne so much. I did too, but come on! Stepping into those shoes was a tall order for any singer, and Duvall has done a spectacular job of it, treating Layne's legacy with respect while adding his own talents to the band in a way that still leaves the band with its own, unmistakable sound. He's helped them deliver three excellent albums and consistently brilliant live shows. He's more than proved himself. RIP Layne - keep it going Jerry, William, Mike and Sean.
First time I ever heard Alice was when I was 16 in 1990 sweeping the floors of the cabinet shop I worked at. Man in the box I stopped what I was doing and just listened. It was THE BEST music I had ever heard. I wore the facelift cassette out then bought the CD which I cherish today.
It has to be very intimidating to step up to the mic and try to sing this song. I am glad it is soo hard and impossible to replicate. Makes me appreciate Layne soo much more. Duvall has allowed us to see and hear AIC live again. I will always be greatful to him for that. Duval does a helluva job!
Say10LuvsU well I would say the reason I liked Will was simply because Lane made such a terrible choice , so why would I hate a guy who actually was with the group , he was playing rythm guitar on tour while Layne was alive, so Will was there when the group was still together even with Mike Starr . This would be like hating Brian Johnson of ACDC , Bon Scott kicked the bucket , no one threw him out , Layne wasn't thrown out etc etc etc . So oddly I was able to accept Will easily and hate heard him in a vdeo of Neon Christ where he was sitting in as lead singer from them also and did a monster job at it ! Strangely I said to myself , this guy could stand in for Layne if the drug problem takes his life and " low and behold " it did and Will was already on board with AIC while on tour !! It seems like Duvall can do a " LAYNE " impression but seems to move away from it more than I would really like but I believe Jerry wants to get past the LAYNE sound a bit ! I believe this may have something to do with a law suit that Jerry is having with Layne's mother who keeps asking for more money , as Jerry has given here 700k and the rest is being held in trust for the kids and the mom is busting his balls over it , go look it up , I was unaware of this myself
sab287Leporidae Layne was a god but Im glad they aren't trying to get the same vibe with Duvall. Trying something new. He has just enough a layne but there is difference which I dig
Nossa O Jerry Cantrell ta uma mistura do James Hetfield com o Edward Norton kkk Toca muito adoro essa banda o novo vocalista e muito competente! Vida longa ao bom e velho ROck do AiC!
Jerry Cantrell really does kick ass, who really cares about his hair getting cut shorter? it looks better that E vedders hair getting cut shorter, no one said anything about that anywhere I ever read!! Jerry's got a lot of talent and had to go through lot to keep the band together through the years.. Not saying The Void of Layne wont always be noticed bc it will be always noticed and Mike S. too! RIP Layne and Mike!! Keep kickin ass the rest off you guys!!! AIC \m/ \m/
If anyone has anything negative to say about Duvall, just keep in mind that Alice in Chains is NOT your band. When Layne Staley was alive, it was the baby of Layne, Jerry, Mike and Sean. When Layne died it was still Jerry, Mike and Sean's baby. They get to decide its fate. They knew Layne Staley and it was their decision whether or not to keep the band going and move forward. I'm SO glad they did.
I have only recently discovered AIC despite being a grunge fan in my youth. I listened to a few grunge bands but somehow I missed AIC completely and I can't believe they passed me by. I think it must be because I knew of Alice N' Chains who i knew were glam metal. I had never heard them as glam metal was was never really my thing hugely. I've been listening to AIC pretty solidly for a few days now and Layne has been blowing my mind. My first song was Man in a box (live at the Moore) and I was instantly hooked. I know DuVall gets some shade for essentially not being Layne but I gotta give props to the guy. He's not trying to be Layne and does an incredible job in my opinion. It has a slightly different feel but it's bound to because he doesn't have the same experiences / emotion as Layne in regard to the subject matter (or Layne's particular vocal gift in terms of its sound / feel.) Layne is irreplaceable so I don't quite know what people expect from others but I think they found a great talent in DuVall who does this song justice here. There are few who could do the same. Just my opinion and I appreciate I'm a beginner in terms of AIC but some people need to give DuVall a break. How many could say they can do better?
Keeping the memory alive of past members with the Reso head on Sean's bass drum.. LSMS! Sean and Jerry both were a constant favorite players club for me and still are! Awesome they are still going
This isn't the same audience from the 90s. The audience for AiC in the 90s were all crazy, high, drunk, and naked and they were JAMMING. When Staley left, I think the fans who connected, had that bond with AiC left, because the old fans were the outsiders, the drug addicts, people who could actually use this music to get through their lives. Now the fans are college kids and parents... Nothing wrong with that its just, the music used to be something for the below average guy who has problems, not the soon to be doctors...
Kane Chitty I think they are one in the same crowds. The soon to be doctors partied just like everyone else did. My son was graduating collage when AiC was near their peak and he was right in the middle of it all, but he graduated collage and made more money his first year than I've ever made. He still drags out his party cloths and makes a quarter mil a year. They said the same thing about the guys who went to see black Sabbath when I was a little more relevant but you can go into board rooms every where and those guys know all the tunes. Music is something that draws the young and influenced them to do what ever the rebellion of the day is and then they grow up but still listen.
That was freaking kick ass awesome.... Jerry still jammin.... The band was just brilliant & I got one thing to say - I KNOW LAYNE STALEY WOULD BE SO PROUD!!!! I love how William does not try to be just like Layne but he can jam out those AIC songs really well... RIP Layne, we miss you
He's just trying to sound like the record, as much as possible. He had some big shoes to fill, and he fills them well. If he sang the songs differently, it wouldnt sound like recorded version, and he'd catch even more BS from the 'fans'. No one can ever be someone else. Enjoy the music, and be glad we are blessed enough to still hear these songs live.
I absolutely love the tempo hanging back just a little when it changes from chorus back to verse, makes those punchy guitar chords punch you that little bit harder and then makes the groove of the chorus all the groovier
This actually is the best cover of “Man In The Box” I’ve seen. We all know that no one will ever be able to sing it like Layne, because he was one of a kind really - no point in mentioning it again. But Duvall hits all the right notes and tones. They sound very good! We will just have to keep in our memory the original version with Layne - the videos I’ve seen, the raw power and soul of that voice - man there is not and never will be another one like it. Not even Chris Cornell’s high and screaming shrills cause me to feel what AIC’s music with Layne makes me feel dude. And Chris Cornell was one of the other greatest voices of grunge/metal rock. Such a shame Layne is no longer with us - what else is there to say. Guess we can only enjoy the music he left for us during his short time here. That goes for Chris Cornell too.
Man, for a second there, I thought Trent Reznor was on drums!! Duvall is no Layne, no one expects him to be, but man, great replacement and great singer
As an old school Alice lover I'll be the first to admit that Duval IS a worthy replacement for Layne. I love the new sound. Jerry is the workhorse of the bunch, does most of the writing and more of the singing than most people think. Oh and as a bonus, Will can play a pretty mean guitar. I love the new Alice.
I believe Willian does a perfect job and hits a soft version and some times higher notes I love but Laney’s vocals are just perfect, powerful and elegant. With all my respect and love ❤ for the hard work for musicians(I’m one of them).
William DuVall is phenomenal!! Kudos to him for taking this on! Wow! Got balls and an really incredible voice and presence! Those are some impossible shoes to fill but whoa! He did an incredibly amazing job in his on right! Definite props! What is he doing now??
I saw them with Duvall in Bilbao, superb performance. I cannot think of a better singer for AIC these days. This theme should be paced up a bit when live tho. Jerry is a top notch musician btw.
I went and saw them probably a few years after that concert and the lead singer definitely stole the show. Jerry played the guitar like a beast, but his vocals were shot, probably from touring.
Yes !!!! Duvall. Sing Duvall songs and looking at that outdoor concert those are some young kids compared.... they don't know or really care ? Keynes last concert was before they were born or they were still babys! Jerry knows where the new moneys coming in,kids these days got more money than we did back then , I'm not as old as Jerry but close, lol. My kids are the new crowd, well me too. Just a lot more picky these days ! Only a few Id pay to.see! But I did bring my kids up on AIC Layne Staley style !!
I liken it to Sammy Hagar doing David Lee Roth's songs. It just should not happen yet it did. They are both great in their own styles of singing but Sammy's vocals just don't cut it on songs like Jump & Panama & Hot For Teacher and so on and so forth. Clearly Duvall tries to make them his own and that's what most of us fans are angry about. Don't change the song into your own, its Layne's vocals we love not Duvall's. Sing you're own songs Duvall and we'll be fine. Let Jerry sing the vocals on the prior material.
+Betorockmetal X A lame crowd for many a people is a crowd that doesn't jump all over the place, doesn't mosh pit, and doesn't know every song by heart. This makes a lot of bad crowds. But actually, here, almost everybody (including myself) came to see Iron Maiden, and even though Ghost, Mastodon and Alice in Chains made a great job, most of the crowd didn't know them enough to sing along or jump. Moreover, it's a small festival...
+Yazerhoun Didn't know them enough? You expect people to believe that the majority of the crowd doesn't know one of the most iconic bands from the 90's well enough? Then what the hell were they even doing there? Lol
Robert Duvall isn’t the singer we wanted but he’s the singer we needed. He pours his heart into every note he sings and I personally think Layne Stayley would give him two thumbs up. Long live Alice In Chains.

I would really love to spend some time with a band I hold dear. They've grown old with me, yet my respect and admiration remain as strong as ever, even for the new members. @@Speekies I don't know what you all guys are talking about. That 52 years old "kid" blew my brains out 2 days ago. You're missing big time, guys.
Layne is dead, you gotta let go, or keep listening to the records and let us enjoy the great lives the band is still offering.
@@lamiss8317 I went it was shit all washed up aic, korn, Megadeth what a joke I need my $$ back
Jerry Cantrell, Alice in Chains ... thank you for the music.... and for being part of my generation.
the crowd needs to show some respect. when i saw them in 2019 the crowd was amazing. they brought him in to honor layne, not replace him and people need to remember that. he in my opinion is the best person that could honor him.
Duvall did a pretty good job here
+Leonardo Pavon This is the first time a person with the same name as me has ever replied me :P
+Leonardo Pavon Its Leonardo :p
I agree! The energy they have with him is different, but it's pretty good!
He's way to nasally during the chorus though
You're just some angry fan that cant take criticism to their favorite artist
Duvall sounds a lot like Layne Staley at times but still adds his own touch. It's good
Johnny Flame no. No he does not.
Mitchell Kidd Jr, uh, yes he does...When he wants to. Jerry said he didn't want a Layne clone, because Layne was one of a kind.
Agreed. He sounds enough like Layne that he meshes well with Jerry on the harmonies, but not so much that he sounds like a tribute act.
Case in point, James Hetfield is a great singer but when he tries to sing Would? with Jerry it doesn't sound good at all.
No, he doesn't. Not. At. All.
Mitchell Kidd Jr the amount of likes on this comment section shows the truth... so gtfo dude
"He doesn't sound as good as Layne."
@@soonforget I think he means the drugs are the reason, he didn't mention anything about ability. You're a bit weird mate.
Christopher Bingham, Amen...William even got Layne's mom's approval. That means a lot to me as an AIC fan.
@@ryoamora8655 thats so cool
Dude does his best.... he's not the man but he singing "his" best
It was all about his life and what was going on and he wrote this song oh, that is why I'm angry they still singing it.
I just noticed the initials on the drums.
LSMS
Layne
Staley
Mike
Starr
.....*facepalm* derp! obvious. Surprised it took me a few minutes to figure it out.
Yeah, I love the fact they have LSMS on the drum kit. Nice to see Layne and Mike remembered!
fuckin awesome isn't it!? love it.

Such a great comment, and this is coming from a very old skool AIC fan. Anyone hating on Duvall needs to well.....set themselves on fire
+Jackson Gildart thats pretty low bro
Al G It's why I didn't respond dude. Well pointed out. Just another TH-cam idiot
The crowd is so dead I can feel the smell of rotting flesh.
Grosu Cosmin Ionut. Frogs......snooty shits

Nice voice and power from William. This is not easy for nobody. This is the anthem. One of the best vocal works of the history. I love this song.
i really love william’s energy! he has a great voice too!
Layne Staley ain't dead. he's my next door neighbor actually. Lol no but in all seriousness my neighbor looks just like Layne in his 40's
I always thought my drug dealer beared a minor resemblance to Layne in his 20s. Right down to the goatee.

They have different voices, you can't compare them.
DuVall: I have fucking goosebumps. What a voice. I miss the hell out of Layne. I saw them in the bay area with Layne. IT was PHENOMenal... I am still a fan. Top ten of favorite 90s rock bands. Keep playing. Please. Keep touring. Please.
I have respect for William, he will never be Layne but he is himself, he is William, he sounds great!
Layne Staley is one hell of an act to follow, probably the best vocalist of his generation. The "new guy" is no slouch though and he should be proud of walking in the same footsteps.
He's not new, he is in the band for...10 years lol

If this was the only version of AIC that you knew and you saw them live, I don't believe you would be in the least bit disappointed. I saw them around this time last year and took it as a completely separate band from the early incarnation and it made the concert much more enjoyable not sitting there comparing every song to the original. Very good band in their own rite. Great job! If were truly honest anyway, Jerry is really the genius behind the music and the band anyway. He was the main songwriter and lyricist. So there you go.
Chris J Layne had the soul and charisma.
But time goes on. And I'm satisfied to know the band still exists.
+Chris J never compare :) even though i love the old times :) i can't say he is a bad "care taker" :D
AIC all day everyday :D but i can say the sound is bad .. i blame the soundguys
Yep.
Dude this performance was amazing
What all the haters/losers don’t understand is these guys know who they’re replacing and go out there anyway and perform …same with JM and Dead & Co
I'm in love with this handsome man's voice and charisma. Great to see him as the lead singer of this epic grunge band.
William was a perfect singer that Jerry was looking for, he sings it his way....Keep Rockin2021
wow! im totally impressed! ALICE IN CHAINS. Live!!! 2014
they are still together!
Super!
Go see them next time they tour if you can! Sound the same, if not better live
I saw them in August. I am still blown away of how good they were!

No one can ever sing like Layne but this guy does a good job!!!
He got better over the years and I think a worthy successor to the original vocalist.
Say10LuvsU true i think if more people actually knew that Jerry wrote most of the music they would be more accepting
sab287Leporidae Layne was a god but Im glad they aren't trying to get the same vibe with Duvall. Trying something new. He has just enough a layne but there is difference which I dig
Layne is gone; forever in our memories of youth! This guy did a good job! Glad to see they are still performing!

He had huge shoes to fill and didn't do Layne a disservice while bringing his own flair. Bravo!!
AIC \m/ \m/
people were pissed because Jerry's hair is epic.
So the only people who can ever have an opinion on a band are the members? You've never had an opinion about a band?
It has a slightly different feel but it's bound to because he doesn't have the same experiences / emotion as Layne in regard to the subject matter (or Layne's particular vocal gift in terms of its sound / feel.)
Layne is irreplaceable so I don't quite know what people expect from others but I think they found a great talent in DuVall who does this song justice here.
This new singer is great. Fantastic voice.
***** I can agree with some of that 👍

Kane Chitty The others will never understand, well said.

@Jerry Cantrell I live in Macon GA but will soon be going home to my cabin in NC Smoky Mountains.
Being how insanely hard this song is and how much power it demands of the singer you gotta give it to Duvall here for a damn good performance
This is so good, I'm happy that we found someone able to compliment Cantrell's voice
William Duvall is actually an amazing replacement. Love his way of adding his touch to the song
Fight me.
The way Jerry harmonized at 4:20 is how they should always do the chorus from now on.
The Progress era of CFP was absolutely brilliant. A record I still spin to this day!
This guy has a good voice! I like his energy as well!
Am I the only one having a hard time coping with Jerry's short hair?

Man, for a second there, I thought Trent Reznor was on drums!! Duvall is no Layne, no one expects him to be, but man, great replacement and great singer
absolutely looks like Trent. No one expects a Layne replacement, just a solid rock n roll singer with a great voice, Duvall is that man.
There is no one like Staley. Suffer, pain and despair makes the best music (and art)

William did an incredible job on vocals!
The lead guitar was great too!
The only problem i have with Duvall is that he can't hit those high notes like Layne used to but otherwise i have no problem with Duvall.
He can hit them, it’s just he doesn’t have the power to project his voice loud enough and to add vocal rasp to make it sound like layne
Layne didn’t sing the notes he just scream.
Jim Kelly agreed...
Izaan ur rehman yeah you’re right. He just added this raspiness that was so badass.
Layne couldnt hit them consistently either.
I like Duval when he sings Duval's songs. I don't like how he sounds when he tries to sing Layne's songs.
Yes !!!!

Lol
no one has the raw power Layne had in his voice , impossible to fill that void
Robert Duvall isn’t the singer we wanted but he’s the singer we needed. He pours his heart into every note he sings and I personally think Layne Stayley would give him two thumbs up. Long live Alice In Chains.

Robert Duvall singing for Alice In Chains, now that would be a sight 🤣
For everyone saying Duvall sucks and whatnot, just remember; Layne would still be here had he not done it too himself. Layne was a really great singer. Duvall is a great singer too. I know they're definitely not comparable but this guy tries to the best of his abilities and that's something we should all respect.
Sad Laney gone too soon but glad to see them keeping it.
That is amazing! I love Duvall I mean obviously not as much as staley but he's just great
I would really love to spend some time with a band I hold dear. They've grown old with me, yet my respect and admiration remain as strong as ever, even for the new members. It's like talking to old friends, sharing a beer, just a few carefree minutes of casual conversation. I also want to express my gratitude for everything they've accomplished so far
