90’s grunge bands always sounded exactly the same during live performances as they did on a studio album. No autotune. No lip sync. No disappointment.
Almost all music from the 90s sounded great live. I don't think autotune was used back then on anything.
Because back then, they didn't have the massive budget. So they had a few takes in the studio and usually recorded everything in one go.
I don’t think everyone realize how hard it is to sing like this.
The fact that he was singing in a sustainable way is what surprises me. Kurt Cobain had an incredibly powerful voice but dude would cough blood in order to achieve it. Layne could have kept singing for decades whereas Kurt probably would have been done shortly after their fourth album due to wear on his throat
@@cavemanzach9475 I have to clarify something: to sing like this, you really need to know how to use your voice, dont stress and dont overcompress. only that way you can achieve these kinda tones. Its naturally sustainable this way :)
@@cavemanzach9475 if only he had sobered up.
We'd still have him and he'd still have his voice
But say he didn't OD nor sobered up altogether, he wouldn't be this good (not counting natural aging)
I conquer. It took me till seeing this live performance a couple months ago to realize how hard it hits. Even though I use to hear this song all the time on the radio during the late 90's early 2000's. Don't no why that it took so long
What fucking voice on that man. So much power and so much control. Perfect combination of anger and sorrow
It slots so well into notes, especially when he belts and crescendos...
Best grunge singer hands down, well to me anyway. Think there's way more to staleys vocals than the rest, and Cornell, cobain and veder aren't far behind him in all honesty.
That headbanging at the beginning was awesome
...also Layne’s foot leaned back was one of the best shits I’ve ever seen in years
When ur head banging before the song even starts you know it's gonna be goooood 👌
my god the way layne and jerry’s voices sound together is so perfect
Absolutely, ask someone who hasn't taken a deep dive into AIC if they realize that it's actually 2 guys singing and it will blow their fucking mind.
Remember seeing them at the Salem Armory in 92. Pearl jam opened, Nirvana was the middle act, and the headliners were Alice in Chains. To this day, I have never been at a better concert. When Man in the Box started, whole place shook
I am SO freaking jealous! I was 13 when all these bands really broke out and become popular, and I was ENTHRALLED. It was a musical awakening for me. I've never looked back.
Wow how ironic to censor this song...
@@theasharaziz The song's about censorship from the media, so it's both moronic and ironic
Funny, the mumble rap I have heard my peers play is uncensored but the media censored this masterpiece. What a fucking joke bruh.
@@slowheat4651 That's because they can't understand what the mumble rappers are saying ;)
@@slowheat4651 They would censor the mumble rap too if it were on TV in 1991.
My god that bass, sounds incredible
The heaviness of the bass in this song just gets it!!
All their songs have great bass. Nutshell is the best goddamn song for bass I’ve heard, besides Primus lol
IKR fucking love when a good song has a good, loud, brutal bass. love it
Everyone talking about Layne's monster performance here--and it's definitely deserved praise, the man has no equal--but Cantrell is fucking so tight on guitar. Every time he plays, the song sounds just like the studio, it's insane. His proficiency as a singer and a live guitarist goes largely unnoticed only because Layne is such a fucking monster. Really puts into perspective how truly good Layne was as a singer.
All of these comments are spot-on!! Great great live performance! Can't believe the sound!! He is truly ravaging those bass strings - my gosh!!
So right - cannot brag enough on how the singers harmonized together -- one of the 1st things I noticed about this group!!!!
"I'm the dog, who gets BEAT! Woof, woof"
@@zachrizzo6525 and then jerry replies with his guitar with a “DA DA DAGADAGADAGADA” LOL

Paige Denes got chills from your comment. I would too travel to this moment
Please get an uncensored copy on tape whilst you're there!! That's the only thing that ruins this version, for me this is the best live version by some distance. And that says something, when you think how many amazing performances of this song exist!!
You can't rock any harder than this
@@gaetzwarren8146that’s what came into my head right away, but still Alice In Chains is my second favorite behind Pantera, it’s just hard to compare them because they are both perfect for different moods
3:39 The ferocity that Layne belts out the final chorus is unbelievable. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he shattered glass in that place. Most unreal live performance of all time. Everyone in that room had no idea they were witnessing history.
Perfectly said! I thought the same thing watching this, dude really reached back for that one! And Jerry gettin into it on the axe, don’t get much better
I agree!! If we could actually time travel, man this would be the place to be.
This "barkingrowling" thing he does at the beginning and around 02:03 is fucking savage sick.
Listen to that fucking bass! R.I.P Mike and Layne.
+Wardo Melena Mike Fucking Starr Dude. Layne wasnt the only one in this band
+Yarin i mean are two mike in the history of the band ..mr i know everything
RIP the two members of Alice in Chains
Mike Starr (April 4, 1966 - March 8, 2011), aged 44
Layne Staley (August 22, 1967 - April 5, 2002), aged 34
You both will be remembered as legends.
So the day before Layne died was Mike’s birthday and he spent it with Layne. Crazy
I was born one day before his death of that same year. RIP Layne!!
Jerry Cantrell's guitar skills are blessed, to say the least
+Dr J Reefer as simpler as the song is, it's still well written and all of the guitar parts here are fucking awesome
+Dr J Reefer lmao exactly. This, no excuses, and Nutshell are all super simple, and it's still 3 of their best songs
+Moffet's Solution If you go and write a song as simple as those, very likely it will be garbage.Anyone can write simple songs, but very few can make them awesome.
This people, is what a rock band looks like. Curse you heroin, curse you to the ends of the earth.
Mark Taylor yup, hard drug use has taken so many talented people away it’s insane.
It’s because these expressions of their talent come from dark places, eventually they are ran over. But the emotion that runs from that place, makes for astonishing music
you know the irony of it is that if Layne wasn't a heroin addict, the music would NOT have been the same.
curse the idiot's that do it...pretty sure it didn't jump in his veins
This is just unbelievable.
Layne’s story is so sad. I hope he’s finally found some peace wherever his spirit is. Thanks for giving us so much positivity through your creations.
Can’t think of a sadder ending. He didn’t deserve it. I know it was self inflicted but he deserved better.
@@Onikagoverdose on speedball. Found dead 2 weeks later almost unrecognizable.
@@Onikag Depression and drugs made Layne extremely reclusive in his later life and he ended up dying alone in his apartment from an OD after having a disagreement with their Bassist Mike Starr. Mike had seen how bad Layne looked and wanted to call 911for an ambulance but Layne threatened to never speak to him again if he did, so Mike didnt know what to do. The last thing Layne said to anyone was to Mike and it was "dont leave, not like this" but Mike was also high on Benzos and left Layne at his apt alone. At this point Layne was pretty much dead from the abuse he put on his body, so It is not Mikes fault but he carried that guilt with him for years until he died of an OD as well in 2011. both of their stories are sad and tragic. RIP to both legends
Also Mike Starr, dude made a mistake to leave his friend alone which ultimately killed him and had to live with that till the day he went out the same way from deep depression. Alice in Chains shoulda been buried with them
This is the best version of Man in the Box I have ever heard. By far.
Undoubtedly. And Jerry’s live voice adds to the rawness if Laynes vocals, and all the instruments amplify the tone of this song. Masterpiece
The version at the Moore in 1990 was amazing too. One of the best vocalists of all time
Well it’s too bad on a 7.2 system it only plays out the front center speaker
Dear God... Mike was literally raping that bass! Everyone in the band is amazing but as a bassist I'm just blown away by Mike's playing.
Mike Starr definitely had the BEST headbanging hair EVER!
LOL the crowd was going nuts
Priscilla Monek good luck finding a concert like this oh wait today will be all phones lol
Thats some awesome bass playing by Mike.
Both Mike's are my rock idols. Starr and Inez are rock gods in my opinion.
The head banging. the vocals. The everything.
This song kicked the 80s ass and ushered in the 90s in a badass fashion
I swear Alice in Chains have more soul than any band I've heard of
Shane Paterson
he got 8, no wait *click* 9 likes so if anything you're the one missing out.
Shane Paterson Whoa Whoa Whoa matey'. Don't throw tomatoes to the man. He didn't mean ''soul music''. The nigga obviously said that they play ''with their souls'' when they perform live. No ''soul music'' of the 70s. Alternative metal with inches of doom, sludge, groove & funk but no soul.
my headphones don't go loud enough. GODDAMNIT!!!!!!
Dylan Padgett lol I know right Layne's getting me so pumped you can tell he Mike,Jerry and Sean were all belting every god damned bit of energy at this concert the amps and speakers and instruments etc can only do so much but you can tell when some 1 is giving all they fucking got and 90 to early 92 you can tell that these guys were just meditating all day for they're short amount of time on the stage and when ever they would go on the were like a super nova they where beautiful,on fire, loud and they simply caught everyone's attention that's the way true rock n roll should be and its a shame we don't have that anymore.
The way Mike Starr plays that bass….. damn…. He almost humping it. Totally sexy man. His bass playing is so badass and sounds so punchy. Love it and him! He looked like such a cool person to know. I’ve listened to many many interviews. Love him. RIP Mike & Layne

Acts 2:38-39
Folks, this is a rare piece of Live performance which exceeds any limits of the human.
Layne was the greatest vocalist in the history of rock. For real.
He was a legend for sure.
But.....Dio???
Bruce Dickinson....??
Freddie..?!?!
If there wasn't any fucking bleeps than I would have considered this to be perfect. I think this is way better than the studio version.
God imagine if he never turned to drugs. He would have been generally regarded as one of the best singers in the world like Freddie Mercury.
He probably would not be so damn good and emotion erupting, his pain was his power and inspiration. Still I would exchange music he gave me for his well being and happiness.
Man, he had some serious pipes. B flat he could just belt out and sustain on the chorus... it's actually incredible. Watch covers, nobody can do it the same. RIP Layne!!!
He hits that note sooo well at 1:18. That's the best rock voice right there.
The scream at 3:21 makes this my favorite live version of this song aside from the one in Brazil where the entire crowd of thousands are singing the chorus. RIP LAYNE.
I love the growling he does to the riff at 2:04
That little death metal growl he does or bark after the first line of the first and second verse are just bad ass. Wish it was on the record. Like most bands from the 90s they was way better live
Yes I thought I was the only one. I wish it was in the original cd version
+Daniel Malone I love those growls so much! Now I can barely listen to the studio version. Lol. I'm like where are laynes growls?!! This live version fucking rocks!!!
And most times the demos the band or song writer comes up with is best & studio ruins it.
same i came back to this video just so i could listen to it again lol its not the same without the growl
So sick this dude can fuckin sing that well.
Layne and Jerry headbanging in unison is soo badass.
That's Jim Morrison of grunge right there.
It's a damn shame people like "Lil Yachty" are what the kids listen to these days. Missing out on some actual talent.
When Jimi Hendrix talks about electric church music, this is what he’s talking about.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I wasn't a huge fan of Alice in Chains until this year because I always thought Layne's vocals were too layered and overproduced. Turns out that's just how perfect he is with the rest of the band that I didn't believe it was possible to sound like this naturally.
Layne's voice was fucking incredible back then... I grew up in this era, but because Kurt and Nirvana had so much attention, and Pearl Jam were massive, when it came to classroom-debates about who had the best voice, alI I remember hearing was how great Eddie Vedder's voice was, and also Chris Cornell's voice... Kurt was mainly lauded for his songwriting, not really his voice... Bit like the Beattles, nobody ever really talks about how great John and Paul were as singers, just songwriters... Cannot believe how powerful Layne's voice is in this video. Incredible stuff
I haven't heard better male rock vocals since him either. The guy could wail and make the angels weep.
I don't believe you. I think you're some underage le wrong generation teen.
Paul Mccartney beats all the vocalists you've listed. If somebody doesn't give Paul credit for his vocal abilities it means this person doesn't know shit about singing :)

1:20 😍 Jesus Christ is right Layne!! What an amazing voice. Another legend gone way too soon. Free of those demons now beautiful dude.
Jerry's solo is always on point! :)
Layne's voice just wow absolutely brilliant.
3:13 - Mike absolutely killing it.
I see a lot of comments comparing Nirvana and AIC and speaking as someone that has A) seen them both in concert and B) spent time -albeit pretty fleeting- with both I would like to say this. They were both INCREDIBLE live. Both groups were filled with amazingly kind and very...conflicted people. Don't pit the two groups against each other, they were both undeniably amazing in their own right and both deserve to be celebrated for the creative geniuses that they were. Side note: Courtney really was a huge bitch, though.
The last chorus to man in the box live is always "bone chilling"when Layne sings it, but in this performance, i can't even describe the feeling i get every time i hear it. Definitely missed along highly UNDERRATED bassist Mike Starr, whose performance outside of his amazingly groovy bass riffs, provided the energy in the playing to me.
This is one of the purest moments in music's history
As a true AIC fan, I am almost in tears watching this nowadays. R.I.P Layne. I know Duvall is good, but he could never replace the vocals cords that you were given, it's as if they were made out of gold.
3:40, never gets old.
How Badass Mike was hereee ! Or The whole band ... such an Iconic band ... the One and Only Alice in Chains !! RIP MIKE AND LAYNE .. GOD BLESS JERRY AND SEAN

not even close lol. Man in the box at the moore blows this out of the water. literally not even comparable
Watching this reminds me children, that once upon time, in a land far away.....................MTV was once good
aha couldn't agree more,I've sadly had to grow up with the sad pathetic excuse they now like to call music... it's sad to think most the kids of my generation don't even know who these guys are,let alone anyone from the grunge/alternative scene. It sickens me to know that it can only get worse from here. I'm also pretty upset about the fact that I not only missed out on GOOD music by 20 years, but when my future children hear this they're gunna be like "shit, I didn't just miss out on seeing these guys, but mom did too"
Kind of funny that when my Dad bought these CDs that 25 years later his daughter was going to steal them all.
+Madeline Ann thats why the good Lord gave us MP3's and CD's....................i'm gonna leave mine in my will :D
Dave Abbott well minus the censoring of the two parts where he says shit, yeah mtv was good back then.
Excluding Scott Weiland, who i still love, Staley, Cornell, Cobain and Vedder have never sang a song out of key in their lives. You see so many of those LA bands and overly produced bands fuck up big time live. Those guys it's like they have super hearing or something. No matter the sound level, the crowd, or their current state of being, they never fucked up a song. At least I've never seen them fuck up.
You're great for bringing up his perfect pitch. Not many in music have that gift but Layne did. :)
