    My personal favorites were the Eminence Blue & the Fender Oxfords. 2nd favorite was the Celestion's with the greenback over the alnico. Least favorite was the McKenzie. 2nd least favorite was both the JBL's. I was kind of surprised since I do tend to like JBL's, but that may be due to their clarity for headroom in higher wattage amps. Much like EV12L's (My all time favorite speaker of choice) they just don't work in lower wattage amps where you are seeking that natural breakup sound of the amp combined with the speaker breakup.

    Thanks for a demo of these rare 10”speakers. Love the McKenzie for the thick mids and overdriven sound, no piercing high ends at all. The Oxford is surprisingly sweet and very fendery at both clean and when mildly overdriven. Love them both!

    I love the Eminence Alnico Blue. It’s a little tighter and more modern sounding than the rest, but when you push them hard, they sing. They have the smallest magnet of the bunch here too.

      It's a wonderful little speaker. Way nicer sounding than the Jensens that Fender later substituted in the reissue tweed Bassman. The buying public wanted Fender to offer Jensens, but the Eminence blue frame speaker sounds better in that amp. Sweeter top end, less harsh when the amp is grinding.

    • @matthewf1979
      @matthewf1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sassulusmagnus I’ve grown to appreciate the reissue Jensen speakers. After a good 20+ hour break in they sound pretty good compared to other new Jensen type Alnico speakers. I have a 1960 P12Q in my Tweed Deluxe and the reissue P12R actually captures the character pretty well.
      That being said, the blue frame Eminence speakers are still better. The recent GA10-SC59 is really good. I have four A10Q’s from the Tweed Deluxe Speed Shop that are custom built by Weber in my Tweed Bassman. Those speakers are as good or slightly better for that amp than the blue frame Alnico. It took the guy four years to develop the specifically for tweed Super’s and Bassman’s.

    Holy cow! The Eminence AlNiCo Blue and the treble pickup on that Les Paul were absolutely fantastic!!!! My favorite by far. The Eminence was darker (with less sparkle) during 2 of the 3 Johan sections - and I'm thankful I won't be playing a Strat through the pair I just bought. When Johan played that third section though, the Eminence again was my favorite. Great video

    The Oxford is for me the best Tweed amp speaker (The 12" maybe even more), for British (vintage) amps I preferred the Celestion 7601.
    But my favorite 10" speaker is missing here, the Elac Alnico 10", which has been used in some Vox and WEM amps for a while. Less intense treble, instead a nice, fuller bodied midrange, in some way similar to a 12" Silver (Bell) and for a 1960's alnico speaker rather unusually voiced. The 7601 comes close, but the Elac sounds even a little rounder and warmer in my opinion. Perfect for me in a smaller Vox, WEM, but maybe even more in a Marshall 18, but also nice, to tame a too intense Tweed amp treble and to improve the overdrive tones.
    I prefer using 10" speakers in 210 or even more in a 1012 combination, not so much as single speakers. So you both get the faster 10" reaction but also the more intense 12" low end.
    Apart from this once again a really good comparison.

  • @vadenk4433
    @vadenk4433 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The oxford’s sounded like they were best voiced for that amp. You should try a set of old Jensen c10q’s. I scored a quad of 64 C10q’s in mint condition and switched out two of the four Oxford 10L6’s in my 68 Super reverb and put in two of the Jensen’s c10q’s- so I had two of each. My lord those Jensen’s rock! I highly recommend those- they’re louder and break up so nice at a much lower level. If it didn’t cost so much to ship stuff overseas I’d send you the other pair to demo

    I really like the sound of both of those JBL's with the Fender amp. They sound pretty full. The 4865 Celestions sound very tired. haha So much speaker distortion. I expected to hate the Eminence speaker since I don't like those blues devilles at all, but the Eminence sounds good too.
    Really enjoyed this video. I have been wanting to get a 4x10 closed back for a while. This was informative. I definitely want one of those JBL's. Maybe one of the Eminence models. I wonder about the sound of the modern Celestion 10" speakers. Cheers.

    Excellent video. Thanks. I only wish you also had a Pyle Driver MH1020 but they may not be too common over your way. In a Fender amp I usually prefer clear and chimey as long as it's not harsh. Disclaimer: I have amps with the Pyle, Eminence and K110s. The Celestions sounded great but I would prefer them in a different style amp.
    My favorites
    1. 1990-2000s Eminence Blue Horse shoe Alnicos (Clear and chimey, nice blend)
    2. 1970s JBL K110 (Clear and chimey)
    3. 1966 Celestion 4865 G10 Alnico (slightly warmer)
    4. 1966 Celestion 7601 G10 (a little warmer yet)
    5. 1970s JBL E110 (warmer yet)
    6. 1973 Oxford 10L5-3 (lack definition)
    7. 1980s McKenzie 1080 GP (mud)

    The Celestions were beautiful. That alnico! Wow what a nice speaker. I love both the alnico and the ceramic greenback. I alway prefer Celestions because they have the top end but not harsh. I liked the blue Eminence for tweed tones but a little dark. I would have liked to see a Jensen P10R as those are really nice when broken in....especially the ones from the 60's. P10Q as well. I did like the K110 JBL. Nice sounding speaker. McKenzie was meh to my ears and the Oxford sounded good when I first heard it but maybe after hearing it against the others it was kind of bland. The JBL E was ok but didnt sound as good next to the alnico K110. But I guess for the Fender tones and in this amp maybe the K110 JBL or Eminence Blue alnico possibly ...the Oxfords are what Im used to though.

  • @HarkoBarf
    @HarkoBarf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Eminence and Oxford fit the best in an amp like this to my ears. The Celestions sounded brittle and the JBL's... Well I think they just suit a cleaner sound better.

    Was interesting to see how much the playing style / PU selection impacted the suitability of particular speakers from round-to-round. In a few cases I noted, "wow, that one sounded the worst", only to consider the same speaker near the top in the next round of comparison. If I had to pick a single overall winner it would be Oxford.

    Have you ever tried Weber speakers? I had to replace the 12" in my '64 blackface Deluxe and opted for one of theirs. These folks don't keep anything on the shelf, they're all built to Your specs and ship in about a week. Back then it was $100 plus shipping. It sounded amazing! Sadly I no longer have that little amp that I paid $65 for when I was 16, I'm 62 now. My how time does fly.

    The blue frames come out on top in all settings. My preferred speaker. If you like those, check out the Eminence GAsc64 10" ceramic for blue frame+ character. A tad less high and a bit more mids. The best 10" for Fender amps.
    The Celestions didnt pair well. The JBLs should be heard in high gain settings w maybe a tubescreamer for SRV sounds.

    Was there anything similar to the Celestion 7601/4865 in 8 inch? 60s or 70s. I'm looking for a replacement for my 74 champ. The original does not take dirt pedals well, I put a Weber 8A125T - it's good (amazing) with dirt but lost the sparkly cleans. Any recommendations?

  • @jonnycap7974
    @jonnycap7974 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Eminence Blues are fantastic, but I gotta go with the Fender Oxfords. They push the mid highs just right while keeping the sizzle under control. The Macks and the JBLs sounded solid. The Celestions had way too much highend and lacked that mid range bark. Maybe they could get dialed in with different settings, but they were my least favorite.

      That kind of mismatch should never be done with a tube amp, it could severely damage the output transformer.
      I would recommend using a speaker with the correct impedance for the amp or something that can make the mismatch safe, like a Weber Z-Matcher or an attenuator with separate input and output impedances.
      With a solid state amp it’s fine to use speakers with higher impedance though.

    Riff 7 shows why I tend to say that lead sounds are a dime a dozen but rhythm sounds are hard. They all sound good! On the other riffs, the Eminence Alnicos sound best, although I think that the JBLs sound pretty good too, and the Mckenzie sound pretty convincing for a fake Marshall sound. The Oxfords sound a little ratty in the classic Fender way, but good.

    The Eminence, the McKenzie and the JBL E110 for me, more balanced than the others, that i felt them very icepicky for my taste.

    Celestion Alnico and JBL k110

    Very interesting shootout. Not surprisingly, none of the Celestions really "fit", to my ears. The blue alnico
    Eminence was the winner. The Oxford sounds very much like the Eminence. The JBL K's sounded bassy and muffled, but the E's were very nice. Tons of clear bass but lacking that sweet, focused guitar midrange of the Eminence and Oxford. Might be an interesting experiment to load that Vibrolux with one Eminence and one JBL E.

    I think of all things---the McKenzies sound the best with both guitars!

    Apart from the Blue Eminence and JBL they mostly sounded like very low quality speakers in my opinion. Throwing a brand new Celestion V Type in there would have been useful I think. Especially in a Silverface amp those extra mids would have really made for a great sound.

      funnily enough I took out the alnico utah's in my 77 vibrolux as they did not seem happy at levels above 4-5 on volume and replaced them with two celestion V type junior 10's and they are surprisingly good if not excellent..........I have had EV sro's ,60's ac30's , 60's JTM45 through T1221's from '69 so have an idea about tone and these little V types make me very happy js

      @@GrrumpDaddo56 I find they are really good speakers especially for the price, no so mid-focused like a Greenback and smoother than a Vintage 30. Apparently the 10” Creamback is also great but I am yet to try one properly.

      @@GrrumpDaddo56 I will give them a try! My mate has a pair of 60’s Alnico Goodmans from an AC30 and they are incredible. They only like low volume as they need to be reconditioned but it’s like another world compared to modern speakers. Makes anything you play sound good haha

    The Eminence, McKenzie and Oxford speakers are the winners to me. That fizzy high end from the '60s Celestions doesn't sit well in my ears.

    66 Celestion, Oxford, Mckinsey, Horeshoes, Jbls. Overall Oxfords are Truth as in, great tone and if the oxfords do not sound good, then your amp just Suks.. the oxford 10’s can be had at a great price. but do not buy reconed. how about treating us to the oxfords paired with the SV20? Ought to be a ripper

      @@JohanSegeborn Well that is interesting, as I have a quad of vintage cones and a couple reconed. One recon the guy put too much dope on it and so stiff that continuity test can not be made. Might put it in a bass cabinet to loosen it up... Thanks Johan, your work is stellar and Fun to watch and listen.
