By itself people tend to prefer more bass. But in a band or mix context, with drums and bass, the guitar has it's own place and don't need that much bass. Also, many recordings we love were done with very bright sounding amps, and then layered, compressed, eq'ed, etc. That being said, in this video I liked the 12s better. But cabinet design and materials also make difference. I believe Johan records a lot o his room sound, with only a closed mic that would be different too. All in all, great work!
The 18" reminded me of Tony Iommi's Master of Reality tone. I was surprised by how much I liked the 15", but I'd pick the 12" to cut through more. Great demo Johan
I am thinking mushrooms, or acid. either way, it came out sounding great. Merry Christmas Johan and thank you for your contribution to art, history and music.
I just recently bought a pair of 2x10 cabinets and really love them. They sound much better in pairs than by themselves. Thanks for an informative video!
Huge difference, goes to show that speaker is indeed a crucial component in a signal chain. Alnico vs ceramic speakers would be nice. Thanks for the great work as usual.
It's fun to hear the midrange moving around through all the various sizes. The 10" sounds super middy, 12" is what we're used to, 15 sounds scooped in this context, and 18 has that steely quality that sounds amazing for leads. It'd be interesting to add a bass guitar to the mix while playing guitar on the various speaker sizes. I wouldn't be surprised if the apparent thickness of the tone was inverse to the speaker size with the 10 sounding the thickest. Personally, I like 12" in closed-back and 10" in open-back (but only if I there's at least 2 of them). I enjoy 15s as well, and in a studio, cutting solos, that 18 is awesome!
I read some of the other comments before adding my .02's worth, but I have to say I really love the way a 4-10 array sounds. The 18 sounded amazing, full, rich and warm, but among the other sizes, I honestly thought the 10's had a lot more punch. I also know from many years of experience that they'll cut through a mix a whole lot better than 12's or 15's. I especially enjoyed the classic "humbucker snarl" through the 10's, and thought they gave much better definition than the 12's and 15's.
They all sound good in their own way, I think the best choice would have to be decided in context of song, mix, and playing environment. Close mic and polar plot in the room can often differ drastically with cabinet design, room size, etc. The G10 was one of Ken Fisher's favorite speakers, would love to hear an 8x10 with a cranked smallbox 50 on it.
I surprised how much I didn't like the 15. The 18 was pure gold, the 10 and 12 were definitely passable and would cut through the mix a little better if your bass player doesn't suck (since great bass players don't just sit down on the end of the finger board farting out on just the bottom octave, octave and a half, of the instrument). The 18 s also nice for rhythm for single coils to thicken those chords up nicely without muddying them up....the 15 just sounded dull in the middle.
Wow Jer I went the other way. I didn't like the 18 as much but the 10, 12, and 15 would sound like a wall of awesome blinded all together. Fad the 10 back a little and use as spice. The 15 has nice tight bottom end where the 18 starts to fall apart for me. Love, Love the 15's. Throw a V30 in there and that's a real cocktail :)
Hi Johan. After being ridiculously inspired with your channel and tones. went searching for a 2 x 12 with g12m greenbacks. got real lucky man. a great shape open back 212 with a pair of g12m greens T1221s.120 bucks. they sound incredible. so juicy. les Paul 69 and the new mesa triple crown. thank you again.ROCK ON
I thought the 4-10 sounded amazing, and yielded better note definition than anything but the 18. Then again, I'll admit that I'm probably quite biased on the subject, since I've been playing through a Peavey Classic 50 4-10 ever since the mid 90's. It moves a crap-ton of air, and actually sounds louder and better than some 100 watt, 2-12 amps I've heard.
I think an 8x18 permanently mounted to the back of a couple roadies would work. Don't think it would be legal though. Maybe soffit mounted in your practice warehouse?
This is probably one of the most interesting tests I've seen thus far. I personally liked the 18" A LOT. 12 & 18. I can see just bring a 1x18 around. I'm sure that the different mic placing had to do a lot with the sound difference but it seems to me the 18 didn't distort as much and it was a little bit more liquid feel
I personally love 10 inch speakers. Used to own a Fender 59 Bassman RI and fell in love with those blues Jensen alnicos. Sold the amp years ago and not a day goes by not regretting that decision... The 18 sounds good here as well.
I'd be interested to hear 10"s, 15"s and 18"s together, in different combinations, to see if/how they balanced each others strengths/shortcomings ... Enjoy going back over these videos ocassionally, to see how my tastes have sometimes changed ... :)
i used to have an old 70s peavey 1x15 bass combo that i would drag out and use any time i had the house to myself the sound was so much more fun than the 10W 6.5" speaker combo i usually got stuck using sadly i needed the space it took (sucker was big and heavy) and it got sold... in hindsight i could have probably asked my sister to store it for me
I didn't even know there was an 18"!!! Sounds awesome!!! I love all the sounds, if i had to rate them i'd say 12" then 18" then 10" and 15" last. Thanks for that johan!
Gosh that 15 really does give the air a good slap. 18 clearly has a stiffer cone but a nice fat mid and solid sound as a result, keeping the highs in check. Reminded me a little of the k140. All great!
Depends on the amp, guitar and the context for which they will be used. With that said, the 12 inch speaker is generally the best overall for guitars. I liked the 18 more than the 15 in this demo. To all of the people complaining about the harshness of the 10 inch speakers, I bet they cut through a dense mix better than the dull sounding 15 inch speaker
Great show as always. I lived through the 60s and always thought the Marshall Cabs with 15" were best. You'd think it would be the lows that would set it apart but I believe the clarity of its highs was its strong point, along with pushing a lot more air. Keep it up. Next show......... "Do I play better with my hat on... or not?"
Hi Johan, I love your channel, I´m a big fan! - you always did a great artwork job and marvellous sound comparisons in your vids!!! I was very surprised about the sound of the 18" and 15" speakers - very unusual sound, but I love it. Just bought the 18" for 45 bucks incl. shipping - looking forward to listening to the sound of this speaker in my studio. Maybe I´d use it in a Leslie cabinet for guitar. Greets from Germany, Patris
The 18 incher is Stoner Heaven! I must get 2 or maybe 4 and make another solid Oak Cabinet. Johan you are invaluable! I Love your Video's especially the Fane! Goodmans!, Celestion and Jensen! Cheers theFuzzmaker®
Not sure I've ever heard an 18" before. Wouldn't want to use it all the time, but I can imagine having some serious fun with it...a very distinctive voice. Thanks Johan!
That's a good idea. It had an amazing sound, but wouldn't be right all on its own. I was surprised how good it sounded, already figured 15" was about as big as they went, for a reason...and again, I was wrong. haha.
Got on here because I am Jonesing for a 15” Speaker...yeah, 15” Speaker is the winner for me. Most body with still being tight and having high end clarity. 12” is so familiar and “right” just because we’ve heard it on so many recordings.
Johan I use a sonic maximizer which enhances clarity, note seperation and for some reason pronounces the lows and highs a little on my g12-65's. I think this is the best of all worlds because it now sounds like a 65 watt greenback that stay's together at higher volumes. it has the classic soulfulness of the 25w greenback but stays tight for harder rock!
I would love to have a 2x12+2x15 cabinet. The 12 has better mids, while the 15 has a better treble and bass response. The 18 was surprisingly good as well.
The 12 inch really defines the tone quite well, maybe it's due to the other 3 speakers in the cabinet. It is very distinctive and recognizable as that "classic rock " tone. It also seems to offer nice compression when compared to the 15 and 18 inch speakers. It makes me wonder, just why the 12 inch size speaker became so common for guitar.
I think there is a lot of variables here, like age and condition of the speakers (moisture exposure) etc... The only thing I can say from this is that I like the frequency range response from the 10 and the 18, WOULD LOVE TO HEAR A 20! ;)
Johan, I'd be interested in a similar comparison with different guitars, like a Stratocaster, Telecaster or whatever other guitars you have. Each speaker had it's own unique tones which would useful in various applications, but using different guitars would be helpful too. Thanks!
I would pick the 12 for most things, it's that classic rock tone I'm used to hearing on records. I'd pick the 10s if I needed to cut through the mix with mids and treble, and I'd probably pick the 18 if I were in a power trio
I liked 12s and the 18 the best. I expected to like the 12s, because that's probably the sound I've heard on most albums, but I was surprised at how much I liked the 18 as well.
For my own ears the 12" is #1, followed really closely by the 15" & 18". The 10" sounded like it was about to be blown out. But Johan, you have to build a 4x18 cabinet and try to move some furniture around the room with it...:)
A true test would've been. Single speaker cabs for each size. I liked the 12s best in this video however, I run a 5 watt tube amp through a single 15 and it sounds amazing.
that 18" sounds kick ass! Its frequency response is much wider than I thought it would be, it isn't just Bass-y like i would think. Is that in a closed back cab? Does the single speaker cab hold up against the 4 speaker cabs in the room like it does with the dynamic mic? and i know you've been working on a series that deal with the tones that different parts of the guitar affects, i was wondering if you could check out saddles? In particular, i'm looking into changing to nylon saddles on a gibson.
Is there a noticeable response difference on that big thing compared to the smaller ones? It's huge and the magnet has to get it moving... The 18" sounds nice for rhythm while the 10" has lots more highs. The bass players usually prefer smaller speaker to get the low end going earlier and on point Don't know if this is significant in the mid freq. band.
Nearly everyone seems to be talking about which speaker they like the sound of. But different speakers have different applications. So a 10" might not sound as pleasant as a 12" in isolation but might be better for cutting through a mix in both recording and live situations.
Least professional but most important metric: you appear to be having the most FUN playing the 18. I might be biased. I play a 1x18, a 2x15, and 6x12 with a pair of 150+ watt MATAMP heads and it feels like I'm controlling a goddamn thunderstorm. The only thing that's ever come close for me was a Sunn Coliseum + Slave and 2 4x15's, but that's still a pale comparison.
Johan Segeborn I wish we could Hang out & share marvels & shoot the shit. I got nothing but respect 4 u & extreme gratitude, GOD bless u. Keep soldiering on😉😉😉😉😉😉
I think I have commented this on another video of yours but I really like 15" speakers. The problem is when you put them in a mix they take up way too much frequency range and it becomes harder to hear other instruments
That's a really great comparison. Thank you. I still can't decide between going with 2x12 or 2x10/4x10 for my rockabilly/rock and roll setup, lol. I sort of like the supressed bass and highs of 10s.
Thank you, it was very fun and very interesting!!! You are helping me a lot to find my tone!🎸🎼🎶🎶 (For me the 12" is the best, but they little bit pancy)
hello Johan, how do you set the thd hot plate , i mean the attenuation level and the deep and bright controls ...do you set it always the same in all the videos ? Congratulations , keep doing those nice ROCKING videos and Merry Christmas from Spain !!!!
+FREDY B.GUERRA Merry Christmas Fredy! I usually use the brightness compensation switch but the levels vary in the videos. Here you can listen to a bunch of settings th-cam.com/video/41RD9ARJ5Ms/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/5Y28oFMU74s/w-d-xo.html
I'll say that, in general, I prefer 12s for both Guitar and Bass. That written, I once owned one of Nugent's former stage amps (a Blackface Twin Reverb) which I loaded with EVM 12Ls and it sounded great with just the 12s and also when sitting on top of (and also driving) a Dual Showman sized 2x15 I built and loaded with EV SRO 15s! While in college, it attracted attention from the folks living a floor below me! :D
What the hell I didn't know there were 18" speakers for guitar... I have a 15" Fullback, quite a few different 12" and I recently bought a 10" Greenback and put it in a ported 1x10. It sounds incredible with my 15 watt Orange tube amp
I actally found the 18" to sound the best due to having the least treble. I didn't find the 10 as great as i was expecting. While it did have tight midrange, it had way too much treble and nonexistent low end response. Stranger yet, despite thinking the largest speaker sounding the best, I also thought the 15" sounded the worst since it was too big to make the high frequecies sound tight, but still made them as loud, if not louder, than on the 12".
18 was an eye opener. Thanks for doing this.
The 10's are very harsh. The 18's are a little dark. The 15's are ok, but the. 12's sound best overall. If I could I'd combine the 12's with the 18's.
+Kenneth Cohagen Thanks, I'm definitely gonna try that
I think using a medium size speaker is a compromise I don't like that and why is there no 5 inch sizes
It's amazing how different they are soundwise. For me, the 12" is a classic guitar speaker for a reason.
By itself people tend to prefer more bass. But in a band or mix context, with drums and bass, the guitar has it's own place and don't need that much bass. +Mike McCourt Thanks man, Yeah 12 is the classic
The G10 immediately made me think of Black Sabbath.
Another great video, thanks.
+Dennis GarryOwen Thanks, I wonder what he used for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath?
I am thinking mushrooms, or acid. either way, it came out sounding great. Merry Christmas Johan and thank you for your contribution to art, history and music.

Huge difference, goes to show that speaker is indeed a crucial component in a signal chain. Alnico vs ceramic speakers would be nice. Thanks for the great work as usual.

All this speakers sound wonderful, but 18" one is in my opinion the best.

I agree , the 10 inch speaker sounds a bit harsh, maybe it's being push a bit too hard with the power.
Well all good, 10s a little harsh but the 18 was great ! Big surprise, nice! , very nice
+Peter Butler Thanks, yeah big as a kickdrum, yet pretty detailed :-)
I surprised how much I didn't like the 15. The 18 was pure gold, the 10 and 12 were definitely passable and would cut through the mix a little better if your bass player doesn't suck (since great bass players don't just sit down on the end of the finger board farting out on just the bottom octave, octave and a half, of the instrument). +Starr Guitar Works Thanks, I'm so glad to hear that!
10's work best in pairs.
I thought the 4-10 sounded amazing, and yielded better note definition than anything but the 18. That 70's Guitarist carvin 4x10 over here
I’m a big fan of 10s myself. Mine don’t sound quite as brash as these do though.
I prefer the way 10s sit in a mix as well.
oh that 18 was a monster...i liked that one most. can you say 4x18? a roadie killer for certain, good job my man!
+STEVE LEITNER I really need to build a 4x18 now :-)
I think an 8x18 permanently mounted to the back of a couple roadies would work. Don't think it would be legal though. Maybe soffit mounted in your practice warehouse?
STEVE LEITNER killer tone!!
8 x x18 yes! Each powered by a Twin Reverb Head! The Roadies can use a fork lift!
ELP roadies can lift a piano with a crane while Keiths playing it....You're gonna need more than 4x18's to "kill" them
This is probably one of the most interesting tests I've seen thus far. I personally liked the 18" A LOT. 12 & 18. I can see just bring a 1x18 around. I'm sure that the different mic placing had to do a lot with the sound difference but it seems to me the 18 didn't distort as much and it was a little bit more liquid feel
That G18 is a beast! I think I liked it the best for chunky rhythm but the G12 for lead/riffs.
+Tim Brannen Thanks :-)
You always make brillllllliant contents!! :)
+YC Thanks, So great to hear that!
That 18 inch sounds monstrous! Very cool I've only seen 18" speakers in subs before.
+xMasterxRazorx Yeah they're not that common nowadays
Thanks Johan. Another great sounding video! I like your Paul more every day! I'll stick with 12's.
+Brian Bouman Glad to hear it!

Each video I watch it’s the 10’s and 15’s that get me :)
The Yamaha hundred 115 is a great amp with its JA 15inch.One of many that I have repaired and refurbed.
Depends on the amp, tubes and settings.
I mostly use 12’s but also have a sweet boutique sporting a 15.
God that 18" blew me away. Hands down blows the door off anyone in the competition. A 4×18" would be the most sick thing in Rock 'n' Roll...
+dzemohendrix I'm gonna have to build one ;-)
Johan Segeborn That would sound fucking massive, man !!!
I really liked the 18 !
BIG SURPRISE !
Depends on the amp, guitar and the context for which they will be used. With that said, the 12 inch speaker is generally the best overall for guitars. I liked the 18 more than the 15 in this demo. +troy auchue Thanks Troy!
12" and 15" for me. The 10" are bit hard on the ears. The 18" was VERY "warm" ;)

now, need to try a 4x18! the 18" speaker sounds awesome, with a great definition and for sure, bassy!
+Max CROZON I feel very tempted to build one :-)

Ty Bro, You are the best in TH-cam :-)
+Super Strato Thanks, You make my day man!
crap. now I need 15" speakers
+Brent Bisaillion ;-) Sorry about that
Lol i just got two of em
I need the 18
Yep me too. 12 inch speakers are ruined forever now.
I would love to have a 2x12+2x15 cabinet. The 12 has better mids, while the 15 has a better treble and bass response. The 18 was surprisingly good as well.
+Stargazer88 Thanks!
Well I freaked out on the back to the Future speaker. Would love to hear a full cabinet of 4 of those! haha!
Excellent! Demystifying! But I noticed that the mic is badly located in the 15" speaker, I have one and it sounds huge!
+Victor Valladares Thanks Victor!
Great video and interesting. I like the 15" very much, but do they sound good clean as well? Thanks!
+Fulltone Thanks! Yeah they work great clean
I think there is a lot of variables here, like age and condition of the speakers (moisture exposure) etc... The only thing I can say from this is that I like the frequency range response from the 10 and the 18, WOULD LOVE TO HEAR A 20! ;)
+Brian Cullen Hahaha yeah a 20 would be so cool, the sound waves would be almost visible ;-) Cheers
The 18 was the surprise of the group for me. I would have never thought to use an 18 for a guitar.
Johan, I'd be interested in a similar comparison with different guitars, like a Stratocaster, Telecaster or whatever other guitars you have. Each speaker had it's own unique tones which would useful in various applications, but using different guitars would be helpful too. Thanks!
+imacmadman22 Yeah I'll keep that in mind! Cheers
I would pick the 12 for most things, it's that classic rock tone I'm used to hearing on records. I'd pick the 10s if I needed to cut through the mix with mids and treble, and I'd probably pick the 18 if I were in a power trio
+Jake Stewart Music Thanks, yeah those 10s cuts through any mix :-)
The G18C sounds damn good, and would make an excellent addition along with the G12M Greenback.
+Viking Mike Yeah, it will add that chunkieness
I liked 12s and the 18 the best. I expected to like the 12s, because that's probably the sound I've heard on most albums, but I was surprised at how much I liked the 18 as well.
+Chord TheSeeker Yeah I'm gonna have to try and mix those two in a two guitar setup.
For my own ears the 12" is #1, followed really closely by the 15" & 18". The 10" sounded like it was about to be blown out. But Johan, you have to build a 4x18 cabinet and try to move some furniture around the room with it...:)
+Noeffnwaypal hahaha, 4 jet engines in a small room ;-)
This made me feel better about selling my Sunn 200S with 2x15 JBL D140Fs. 12s are the perfect rock guitar speaker.
+Connor Nepomuceno Thanks, yeah we can dance saddles to in that series!
Is there a noticeable response difference on that big thing compared to the smaller ones?
It's huge and the magnet has to get it moving...
The 18" sounds nice for rhythm while the 10" has lots more highs.
The bass players usually prefer smaller speaker to get the low end going earlier and on point
Don't know if this is significant in the mid freq. band.
15" much cleaner and still got the dirt feel when drive hard .. perfect for rock tones..
ya i think i like the 18 the most .. that sounds awesome !
Nearly everyone seems to be talking about which speaker they like the sound of. But different speakers have different applications. So a 10" might not sound as pleasant as a 12" in isolation but might be better for cutting through a mix in both recording and live situations.
Absolutely! The choice of speakers depends very much on which other sounds that will be present in the mix
Can you do this test for bass guitar also? Would love to see those sizes on bass.
+Andreas Dieck I will :-)
Appreciate it a lot ;)
Least professional but most important metric: you appear to be having the most FUN playing the 18. I might be biased. I play a 1x18, a 2x15, and 6x12 with a pair of 150+ watt MATAMP heads and it feels like I'm controlling a goddamn thunderstorm. The only thing that's ever come close for me was a Sunn Coliseum + Slave and 2 4x15's, but that's still a pale comparison.
😉12" #1😉15" #2😉Nice experiment brother JOHAN😉Thanx again, cheers.
+David Buzzin Thanks bro
Johan Segeborn I wish we could Hang out & share marvels & shoot the shit. I got nothing but respect 4 u & extreme gratitude, GOD bless u. Keep soldiering on😉😉😉😉😉😉
Every time you play the 12" speakers, my ears says: "welcome home baby" ;-). But the 18" was also great. Lasse
+Lasse Storgaard Jacobsen Thanks Lasse! :-)
G18 sound so GOOD!!!! OH MY GOD!!
+Samuel Cruz Thanks man
Never heard an 18 before. Sounds great
+Tamir Keren Thanks, yeah a very fat tone
I think I have commented this on another video of yours but I really like 15" speakers. The problem is when you put them in a mix they take up way too much frequency range and it becomes harder to hear other instruments
+Tilen Marš Yeah, they sound great in less dense mixes but sound way to big and maybe even clumsy in a dense mix.
man i would love to jam with you and your beautiful amps :) great video as always
+Bruno Mad Thanks, if you're ever in Sweden, lets Jam!
+Christoph Behnke Thanks Chris :-)
The 18” sounded insane!
That's a really great comparison. Thank you. I still can't decide between going with 2x12 or 2x10/4x10 for my rockabilly/rock and roll setup, lol. I sort of like the supressed bass and highs of 10s.
I like the added video.
For me it's between the 12s and the 15s. I really like both of them
+David Stoneback Thanks David
Favorites were 12" and 18". Not sure in which order, though. The other two sounded a bit too trebly in (this) comparison.
+pikkuarska Thanks :-)
A 2x10 or 4x10 would make an amazon old school thrash metal tone!
Great video ! Really helpful. Could you do something similar with bass speakers ?
+MrSixSickSix Thanks, yeah I will! :-)
18'' is wow, 15'' also cool, 10'' and 12'' i knew them already..Anyhow this 18'' changed my life ☺ must have one . Uber cool video THX
That 18 inch speaker sounds great!
+Christopher Hack Yeah, a surprisingly balanced and fat tone
Thank you, it was very fun and very interesting!!!
You are helping me a lot to find my tone!🎸🎼🎶🎶
(For me the 12" is the best, but they little bit pancy)
Thanks, glad to hear that!
I would try running the 10s and the 18 together for some super wide swath
I would say in order from favorite to least would be 12, 10, 18, 15
hello Johan, how do you set the thd hot plate , i mean the attenuation level and the deep and bright controls ...do you set it always the same in all the videos ?
Congratulations , keep doing those nice ROCKING videos and Merry Christmas from Spain !!!!
+FREDY B.GUERRA Merry Christmas Fredy! I usually use the brightness compensation switch but the levels vary in the videos. Here you can listen to a bunch of settings

Direct correlation to wider more expansive sound to larger speakers, 18" it is. Close your eyes and you'll hear it in your face.
What the hell I didn't know there were 18" speakers for guitar... I have a 15" Fullback, quite a few different 12" and
I recently bought a 10" Greenback and put it in a ported 1x10. It sounds incredible with my 15 watt Orange tube amp
Call me boring . ..but I prefer the 12 inch...although the 15 and 18 weren't bad.....Merry Christmas . ..Thanks for your videos throughout the year.
+Jeff Hebert Merry Christmas Jeff!
+Messiah of Fire Thanks!
