Hi, I have a Rutland dust extractor that was on offer and tried allsorts of drums, all of which ciollapsed so I ended up making a cube out of half inch ply and used self adhesive seal for the lid and it works a treat, so I wouldnt be too concerned about having to use a drum........ You have a lot to answer for.you keep me up late, watch one of your vids and end up watching several ............many thanks for your knowledge and time spent putting them together.... On another issue, I bought the Rutlands track saw, again when it was on offer and although it is a "cheapie" am very impressed. The only thing I didnt like was the track, so bought some from Makita and they work a treat.
Tim/Jo, this was the very first video I saw of you guys...close to a year ago. This one got me hooked on all your other video and i'm glad I went back to the very fist one and watched them chronologically. They all make sense now lol. I'm slowly catching up. 😃
That’s it all caught up with your vids! Your channel has been a God send when getting my 8 month old daughter to sleep. Helps me pass the time and learn at the same time! Seeing your girls in the videos makes me wonder what mine will be in 2-5 years. Can’t wait 😊! Back to this video. I definitely want one of these when I get the chance to tidy up my garage/workshop mess. I can finally put the notifications on 👍🏻 and wait for the next one!
Well done, there were quite a few to get through! Our first girl is a great sleeper, she used to drift off to the sounds of floor sanding and drilling walls! :-) Cyclone vac working well, not sure it would handle the chicken houses but rabbit hutch would work perfectly, (once they are removed first!).
So how they are? Still happy father?
This rig was a god send when had to vacuum the attic before we knocked down the ceilings. Worked a great sucking up all that horrible black dust!!!
great video (as always) :) It's really nice to see that you have the same issues/challenges doing this. I'm currently in the process of making my own too. I have a self-made cyclone and I just bought a large bin (not as large as yours, lol) and I'm trying to figure out how to attach the cyclone to it in such a way that I can open the bin easily. the bin is square so i can't use those white clasps (not sure of the name) that you're using. but we'll get there :)
Another great video, I need this in my workshop, and so simple, there’s something oddly satisfying about the collection of saw dust, if you do make a trolly for it that would be a useful video too.

I’ve just bought one. Your video was very helpful in setting it up. Many thanks. I have to admit that I also use a paper bag inside the shop vac, mainly because I don’t like the idea of stuff getting sucked into the motor. Also, bags are cheaper than filters. Best wishes.
I've just put one of these together. £16 cyclone off eBay, £6 plasterer's bucket from Wickes, 9mm plywood cut into an octagon, and some shock cord from eBay. I didn't even make a sealing gasket as the ply pulls down pretty tight to the bucket. Works a treat.
nice one, i have the same and a slightly smaller thicknesser but i think there is a rule on the hose size that makes it work better one has to be bigger than the other and you can use a blower as well as a sucker if you want, the only thing extra i did was put a circular plate on the drum from plywood and used silicone mastic to totally seal it up, they work brilliantly and two years on no change in the filter...... 15 quid of ali express! works on the cnc, router table, saw table and planer, just used blast gates to control the suction, printed those on a 3d printer as they are serious money for what they are!
You have to put a plywood on the lid of your cyclone it will make more rigid 👍👏🤝

Next project...log press to turn all that sawdust into presto logs. "It's an investment honey"...that's how I get most of my tools:)

I was looking only last week at the cyclone and drum set up, excellent job, ordering mine today !.
My Record Power extractor has paper bags that fit over the filters. The filters stay really clean and last much longer. Might be worth considering.

Thanks for the video. Did you know that you can wash the corrugated filters under the tap or shower and dry them in the sun or in the airing cupboard? Works for me! (Best to knock off most of the loosest stuff first and remember that the filter material is vulnerable until it's dried.)

With a setup of this size do you need to worry about static build up? I know long extraction systems with plastic pipe need earthing but is this one small enough to not need it?
This is a project I have on my list. I have heard and seen pics of drums imploding when there is a blockage even a metal one so not sure what the answer is but your drum looks very sturdy and TBH looking at how much you filled it in a short time with planer big is probably better. You need a workshop sawdust burner....
an implosion should only happen if you block the entry/hose completely. so if you keep the hose at an angle it should be ok. and try to only use this for saw-dust and small particle.
Many of the products that you buy seem to never fit the hoses you have. I have used PVC pipe and heated it to either sink it or stretch it to fit it to the sizes that fit. Eazy to do a heat gun and a good pair of heat resistant gloves.
Nice work mate, I have a similar set up myself, will be worth while you getting a simple pressure relief valve put into the top as if you get a blockage your drum will crumple down. You can google cyclone pressure relief valve for some simple solutions. Keep up the good work
If need be you could always cut the drum in half and screw/glue it together.
You could also get a bagless vacuum because they use cyclones and Dysons can filter out very fine dust too!
Fine for small jobs but not sure it would last long on the thickness planer though. 👍
I have an extractor that I bought from rutlands. It says in the instructions to leave the clamp around the top of the drum off as it is a risk of explosion 💥

What planer do you use?
Just bought the Amazon package my self with a smaller Drum, Hose and a Chinese copy of the cyclone for around 43gbp. Found that using a small hand router makes a lot of mess so when I start using my large Triton one I will need it along with other tools. How are you finding the Triton thicknesser??
I'm going to have buy one of those cyclone thingies and build one myself. Let the dust wars begin!
I have the same planer and tbh the dust collection on it isn't brilliant to start with but at least your system collects most of it. One question I had: When using the Triton planer without dusct collection the dust port gets clogged pretty quickly - do you find it's better with suction on it?
I now use with a 100mm adapter and it’s faultless. 👌 it’s in my shaker door series if you want to see the adapter. 👍
I did wonder for quite a time : what do you do with all that sawdust? There must be some use for it!

I run this one on a cheap second hand shop vac. Any small vacuum will work on this.
Saw dust for days! Keep the barrel on the sack barrow ready to transport, one less thing to have tidied away then, not just a hat rack my friend /points at head :)
I tried to do similar but some reason it is failing for me.
Besides that, where do you get the timber matey? I asked at B&Q, and my local shop but they couldn’t give me the answer! I was supposed to ask you but couldn’t find the video even I subscribed. The big drum is much better stick some wheels on it and an extra hose and then it will reach round your shop.
You can buy a furniture dolly and a couple of small tie-down straps and put together a quick-n-dirty trolly for that drum.

Way to much dust in the filter and box. You have a leak between the dust bin and the cyclone or the lid to the cyclone. You need to put a 1/2-3/4" piece of plywood under the cyclone to prevent flex and leaking in that area. A very tiny leak here will wreck the separation. To connect the hoses to the cyclone you need 2 each Fernco 2x2 connectors. Amazon has them. About $5 each.

I just replaced my 30l drum that came with the the dust commander with a 60L one that I got off Amazon for £22. It’s extremely ridge and a lot easier to empty than the 120l one on this video. To be fair only used it this week but it’s a massive improvement

How can you tell if you have more sawdust today than yesterday in that shop? It's so messy a little sawdust can't be much of a problem.
I will be interested to see if you have trouble with imploding, I had 3 containers implode and gave up. Somewhere on you tube i think I saw a homemade pressure release valve
Yesterday I had two blockages which caused the lid to be pulled down a little more but I can't imagine the walls would collapse with this particlar vac and the rigid drum. That said I can see a use of a release valve to avoide any issues. Will look around and see what I can find.

I’ve just got one of these and initially made a pressure relief valve in the lid to stop collapse, but had issues as every time I blocked the hose the dust would immediately get sucked into the vacuum cleaner as the air flow was coming straight up through the bottom of the cyclone and taking dust into the vac along with it.
I’ve now replaced this with a box that has the valve on it, this then sits on the outlet port of the cyclone, the vacuum cleaner then plugs into the box, this way when I get a blockage only clean air goes to the vacuum and the dust already in the cyclone should hopefully drop into the drum instead of being sucked into the vacuum (as that air will now be static or low pressure due to the blockage). I’m able to adjust the valve (a screw though a spring attached to a plug in a hole) to control the pressure before it opens, this way I can fine tune it if I need more/less suction to hopefully find the sweet spot where I get maximum airflow, but below the point where the drum will collapse. This design adds a few inches to the top of the cyclone, but my hose now connects at 90deg so it actually takes up less height than with the hose coming straight out of the top.
You will need a anti crushing valve if you use plastic buckets dust commander do one it goes in lid
Can someone tell me where to get a bin like the one he has here or something similar? I've looked and I can't seem to find a can that's air tight and the one he has is just about perfect.

Hi, do you have a link to the actual barrel you purchased the size and straight sides looks perfect for a project I have in mind. Also, I have heard static build up in the plastic hoses can be an issue, did you ground it at all?
Dyson borrowed / stole this from woodworkers and stuck it on wheels in his vacuum
its funny as i did mine and 90% of dust still goes to the vacuum not in the barrel
I couldn't imagine working in a shop that disorganized... but to each his own...
At one point you could buy GorTex filters for the vacs in the USA. Haven't checked to see if they are still available. Shake them off and pop them in a dishwasher, let dry and your good to go for a few more times around.
Our ash vacuum has a similar washable filter. Works great.

Be careful using wood shavings with animals. Some woods can be harmful to animals but for the most part they’re fine.
