4-2-2-2 Tactics Explained! The 4-2-2-2 seems to be on the rise, with some big European clubs brining it back under the spot light. It's a formation that has been around for some time, but has never truly become the most popular formation out there. In today's video we're going to be looking at the main structure, attack, defence and weaknesses of the 4-2-2-2 along with a brief history lesson on how the formation developed.
It's narrow shape with players staggered on different lines means it's a system that can quickly create a dangerous opportunity, but there are a few areas on the pitch that the team will need to look out for, as the unusual shape means there are certain gaps the opposition will try to exploit!

This is the formation Gallardo has been using in River and that has recently won the Argentine league. It's great when attacking and to press. The biggest problem is that when the rival beats the press (which will happen a couple of time sooner or later) the team is extremely exposed. There is little coverage on the flanks. The fullbacks and mids are running back with their face to their goal (never a good sign) and the CBs are often 1 v 1 (or outnumbered) with lots of space to cover. The formation has some amazing strengths, but it's so vulnerable to counterattack. The solution that Gallardo has come up with is systematic tactical fouls as soon as they lose possession. You either recover the fall or foul them before they get to midfield. Because it happens so far away from the goal and the fouls are not that rough, they usually manage to avoid yellow cards. The minute a midfielder gets a card, the subtitute starts to warm up. It curious but when game stats are up you notice that the team often has 70% possession, more shots and goals, and evidently they dominated, but their fouls generally still exceed the opponent.

      River is more a 4-3-1-2

@@aAaronbavl Not usually but Gallardo does like to vary. They started the season with a clear 4222 with Perez Zuculini as CDM and De la Cruz and Carrascal as CAM. DLC eventually got injured and Carrascal got subbed due to poor form, but Palavecino plays as CAM that starts on the left. Enzo Fernandez tends to play to his right. Behind Perez and Simon. Sometimes Zuculini. At times Simon does play to the right, but he doesn't usually play that wide or that far up. In any case if the formation were a 4312, I am not clear who the left midfielder is supposed to be. Palavecino roams far too freely.

The Sao Paulo FC of Coach Rogerio Ceni have been using this formation in the begin of the season in Brazil. with this formation they beated Palmeiras that is the South America Champion in a first leg of the final of regional championship But the team need very stamina to pressure the oposite, because when the pressure is beated the defense stay vunerable. Sometimes the team too has been using the variation to 4-4-2 diamond with the ball and in the offense pressure and 4-5-1 when the team need to down the lines

This formation was the standard in Brazil for quite some time, mainly during the 1990's up until the late 2000's, although it began gaining popularity in 1979 when Tele Santana was coaching Palmeiras. Later on, he used this formation on both the 1982 and 1986 Brazil's national team in the World Cups.
Furthermore, Brazil won the 1994 using this formation, also using it in 1998 and 2006.

    • @aquelegabriel
      @aquelegabriel ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, this was the system that I think you need to mention either a Brazilian club, or the Brazilian team, since we used it so much and for such a long time. And we had some amazing teams using this system as well, but just the Brazilian teams of 94 and 2006 were a must. In 94 to show the strengths of the system and the 06 to show how, even with a brilliant squad, you can exploit this system flaws.

As in all formations, it is about what fits the roster first and foremost.
Additionally, determination on what tactics are desired versus given-up with regard to roster.
1 season with a young newbie travel team, rest of league was more advanced offensively. Roster lacked firepower on front end.
To combat the obvious disparity on the goals scored sheet, the roster trained on suppressing the OPP attack.
The plan was to create a defending scheme the rest of league was not incorporating... the offside trap... a staple of the 3-4-3 formation from Johan Cruyeff (?) days in the 1980's... dropping back the central CB to a sweeper position on-the-fly as the attack compressed and squeezed on defense.
The result was a league record of sorts for offside infraction calls, and compliments by every OPP coach...
...going back to above, it was a mentality of forcing OPP to pass through or over defensive backline, eliminate dribble penetration.
With the 4-2-2-2, can easily roll into transition of a 3-4-1-2, 3-4-3 or 3-3-2-2, 3-3-3-1 to take away OPP wing tactics.

Tuchel uses this formation a lot at Chelsea despite officially lining up as a 352., like recently against real madrid when they won 3-2. Mason Mount is key as he is the player that gets in the half spaces a lot. Loftus cheek also did this and I felt Chelsea were the better team despite not having excellent passers in midfield. Then again Ancelotti saw the chance to create overloads on the flanks because the fullbacks were pushing so high. I wonder who he can get so that he is able to switch to a more modern 433, like he played at PSG.

Real Madrid played partially duri G game this 4-4-2/4-2-2-2 , Casimero and Kroos as holding midfielder, Modric and Valverde as attacking mid from flanks and Vini, Benzema the two strikers it changes during games easily to 4-4-2 when both Valverde and Modric Close the flanks or it becomes 4-3-3 again when Valverde goes on the right wing while Modric take his place in midfield, I think it's a system that needs certain types of players to success the full backs should be both balanced defensively and offensively Mendy and to a lesser extent Carvajal are, the two holding midfielders both are deep but on is a DM the other is CM that's Casimero and Kroos while the attacking mid can play centrally CAM or wide as L/R AM both Valverde and Modric can do that as well while the two forwards should be good in or outside the box through runs that's Vini and Benzema
