Aztek Dummy Update 9/14/18 - 350 Scale Reliant - the fiinish!

- like the title says... this week I put the final details on the 350 scale Reliant and try to dodge Mother Nature.
A quick wrap up of a most challenging build.

Thoroughly enjoying your channel as I binge watch your various build series. TWOK is what got me into Star Trek when I was just a kid. I loved that movie so much I wore out the VHS tape my dad recorded it on. I've always loved USS Reliant. Such a great looking ship and your model looks incredible. 👍

I’ve gotta tell you Lou your skill level and patience is an inspiration. You’re one of my favorite channels on you tube. When ever I have a project that has stalled (I’m looking at you Perfect Grade Millennium Falcon) I always get inspiration after I watch one of your videos to get back at it. Awesome channel and great work man.

Well done Lou! That build was a bit of a marathon. Looks great in the end. Now suffering a bit from "Reliant fatigue" as I am sure you are so I won't be starting either of the two Reliant kits I have still in their boxes any time soon! Keep your head down and I hope the hurricane passes you by without too much damage. As always looking forward to next week.

This turned out amazing! I'd love to build a Reliant at that size but I don't feel comfortable in my skills so I'm glad you posted this for us to watch along to.
Actually these bigger ones are much easier to work with, they can be more awkward but much easier to paint the details and do touch ups.

I wonder how a customized Reliant would look with the engines IN THE CORRECT upright position like they were intended to be before Harve Bennett screwed up and looked at the blueprints upside-down?
I don't think it would work unless you inverted the miniature (AGAIN!) and left the torpedo bay on the "lower" (correct) saucer section otherwise you'd have to do MAJOR surgery to accommodate the torps along with the engines on top.
It's just easier to flip it and refashion the lower dome as the proper bridge and put the sensor dome on the bottom like it is on the Enterprise.
I know Andrew Probert had a major issue with the Reliant and was never crazy about the Federation ships with the warp nacelles mounted below the saucers although even his Enterprise-D had the nacelles mounted slightly below the top line of its saucer, too!
The Reliant never answered certain questions about a proper deflector array... Where's the indication of that on the models? (I now they indicate them on the blueprints/line drawings issued AFTER the fact but the detail's NOT on the model!) At least they did that with the NX-01 and the Nebula-class ships which were essentially rearranged Galaxy-class vessels.

Hi Lou, ya know I truly did not realize that the Reliant's colors were actually shades of light gray. But sure enough I went searching for pictures of the studio model and no white, light gray's they are. You did a beautiful job on this build. I still have not started on my 1: 537 Reliant but I'm looking forward to it as the Miranda class is easily one of my favorites starship's and you really did a fabulous job on this as you always do . Excellent finish! It's sad Donshoko isn't producing the kit right now or I would pull the trigger on it. I got the "model that shall not be named" on preorder and am pretty excited for it!
Yes the EVA Pod, wow, just finished building the 1/12 From CC! So looking forward to this one, have it on pre order from Steve. The size means the lighting of the panels will be fantastic.
So glade Lou that at the time of this upload things are ok so far , was thinking about you all week hoping Flow stayed south although I did hear Raleigh mentioned today in the news . The Reliant turned out great for a complete redesign and really love the lighting and paint work . The big Enterprise would be a great winter project which is coming fast , although have you decided where in the house you will be forced to build it while filming and then display it ? . You need to build another addition . lol . Stay safe ..
Great final result! Must admit, I don't know if I'd have the courage to tackle something that big.

All that hard work paid off as it turned out to be a beautiful ship! I didn't recall the nacelles having that type of shading or strips to the paint. That was a heck of a build! Bummer about your AC. ARS is a good company in case you haven't decided and I've used them for years.

God's I wish PL would make the reliant in 1/350. Love that ship.
Here's what the guy at round 2 told me. They want better reference of the filming model (which is owned by a collector in France ). What they had was good enough for the 1000 scale, but they are lacking accurate measurements to do a 350. If they can get some access to the model or better pictures, they're all for making a new kit.

I would love to see a model of rge original concept for Reliant which was basically upside down. It would mean rotating the saucer so the weapons pod was under it instead of above. Not sure how doable that is with a kit. Great video.

Lou, hope all is well out there, what type or brand of gloss coat, dull coat do you use on your Star Trek vessel builds?
Great work! By the way you can tell the purists to just shut up about the nacelles, they are supposed to be lit even if the movie studio didn't see fit to always do so. All one has to do is study the nacelle tech sheets in the engineer's data sheets (There's an actual name for it but i forgot lol). Same with the Original series Enterprise, the inner part of the nacelles were set to be lit up but due to budget restraints they left it alone. In the actual idea of Gene the Nacelles on the TOS ship would have had a lighted orange strip down the inside part of the nacelles but nothing on the outside part. Blue or Orange would work although the Orange matches the Bussards on the TOS Ship so stay with Gene's idea lol.
The actual reason the Reliant's nacelles were never lit was because we NEVER saw it at warp. They're only blue/purple when in warp. At impulse they're still black

Is the acrylic armiture your design?really needed for the 1/350 build? Good for refit, too?
That armature is for the huge 66 inch Enterprise, not the 350

Ahhh... good Saturday morn to you! I hope your weather troubles are few. You've worked wonders on that monster-- fielding detail after detail. Alas your "4" decal troubles. Hmm-- I think you're not "fat" but a point or two too large. Color match: well, I hear you can put paint on vinyl! Or, of course, your idea of making a mask sounds pretty good-- if and when you get the type size right. As for color matching... well, consider it penance for touching it in the first place.
Otherwise-- the whole thing's a spectacle.
Good luck on your A/C -- say, why don't you let a little air in by opening up your bay doors?

I hadn't done anything specifically for it because the bloody thing is just so small, but you're right the generic pattern templates would work

This is a conversion kit. You have to have one of the 350 scale refit kits to get started and then buy the reliant bits separately from donshoko.com.
Lou have you ever done, or plan to do, a GODZILLA figure? I was looking for one when you were camera sweeping your "throne" room and didn't see one?
