In my hometown, in Viciebsk, was a huge colony of hebrews before the Revolution. Most of them left the city after The Event, their descedants are mostly in Israel and USA nowadays, but they left some interesting things, that you can still find in antique stores all over the city, such as old paintings without specific aesthetic value and old menoras.
I tried to find something interesting in these stores, even a monocle when i needed it for my left eye, and the owner of the main store said to me, that all the valued things from pre-WW2 times were bought or stolen by russians in 1950's-1990's.
I can only admire those remarkable pieces from the video and be jealous :D

The way you told the history of these pieces, it was easy to picture the people and places involved. The original owners of the pince-nez and the spectacles, the interior of the optician's shop, the family going through the rubble salvaging what they could. What a thrill to be able to handle such personal historical items!

    The excitement is infectious!
I inherited an old lorgnette from my grandmother, but sadly it was in pieces. It would have been lovely to use with historical clothing, since I am now at the age where I need reading glasses if I wear contact lenses. I did find an old pair of spectacles (similar to the ones you show here) online that work, but they were very crooked and dirty when I got them, and of course there was no provenance. (OTOH, that meant I had no qualms about fixing them up to make them wearable!)

I would like to commend you for the excellent contextualisation of the items. It was so great to know about the story and provenance of this pieces of antique wear. I really love the time you take to explain the moment in history where this piece were created and the people who used them. Every piece of antiques had a time and purpose that made them the way they are and give us a really good understanding of what was like living in those days. Yes, the war impacted the way these people dressed, the times influence the shapes, materials and shows the creativity that mankind has to go through to adapt. So glad of your work here... I can't wait to see more.

Love cable temples, I had them on new glasses, and hate that they don't seem available anymore.

    Absolutely incredible find!
I have a question however, if one were to buy an antique eye wear with the intent to wear it, is it possible to change the original lenses for something that would suit better the buyer or will it damage the object?

I really like your haircut may I ask how does one describe it to a barber (when they will open eventually) ?

    • @AntiqueMenswear

      Thank you very much!
Perhaps "Short back and sides with a side parting" or "Edwardian undercut" will get you the look you want.
My barber is Japanese so we don't use those words 😅 but make sure you ask for no fade.

You will have to research eye doctor s, I don't know if they made personal eye prescriptions or the Dr just tried on glasses until you could see better, the way reading glasses are still sold today You said that perhaps some were too strong.
