    I wonder how the creator of that suit would have felt if he were told in the past that this suit will be worn by someone 120 years in the future. That article of clothing beat the large odds against it and managed to land on careful hands through many generations.

      Yeah. His suit made in America would be worn 120-ish years later by a British boy living in Japan, filming himself wearing it on a telephone 🤣

      Imagine: hello everyone welcome back to my channel, I have here an item of clothing from a shop in 2021 called Primark (not that primark lasts 2 years let alone 120) it was called a t-shirt, with a slogan called bite-me, which must have been a commonly used phrase then.

    As a guy who LOVES watching historical fashion videos (of trying on, of wearing, of creating, of learning about the era and the fashions of various decades in assorted centuries, etc) I'm **thrilled** to see more men's channels. Don't get me wrong; I adore all the women's fashion oriented channel's. I've learned SO MUCH and found so many interests (and the binary gendering of clothing I know is a problem).
    That said, personally at this point in my life, I'm far less likely to wear panniers than I would be a waistcoat. So it's wonderful being able to finally learn some of the men's fashion too.
    I learned *so much* in this video (e.g. the cinch-back in the trousers. I didn't know that was a thing!) So thank you!!

    This is the kinda of suit I’ve wanted even since I started collecting. Really interesting pattern design on the fabric with even a double breasted vest. I do have an 1890s - 1900s sack suit, but it’s generic black and has some noticeable damage. Hopefully I’ll find one like this soon. This is a gorgeous suit, I am ever so happy to see it so serviceable for wear! It gave me some design ideas. I am genuinely curious if there ever were trousers between the late 18th, and early 20th centuries fully lined? (it's a preference of mine)
    That raw edge on the waistline has me anxious, but I suppose there are raw edges in every garment, heh. Thanks for sharing!

      Do you mean lined down the legs?
      The earliest lined suit trousers I've found were Japanese 60s.
      That being said, depending on if it was work gear of protective gear they could have been lined. Generally trousers of this era are not lined in the leg.

    The cutaway effect of the jacket combined with the high button stance look positively smashing. Lovely suit (and cut from a beautiful fabric)!
    Out of curiosity, would you consider this a town and county or city suit? My own sensibilities say town and country due to check, but the overall grey colour might be formal enough for city.

    • @AntiqueMenswear
      @AntiqueMenswear  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think you could get away with it in both settings.
      It strikes me as loud in colour so it feels country, and the fabric is really thick and heavy, almost tweed, so I think a casual walking suit is probably the best application for it! 😁

  • @TheRefinedGentleman
    @TheRefinedGentleman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Man that suit looked clean... must've been a good feeling taking that out of the box. I got the impression it would've been more of a "smart casual" option for the time, either for really casual outings, informal social events or just for a leisurely vibe. Recently discovered the gently used/vintage/second-hand scene for menswear and have had some pretty good hauls myself, but nothing as good as that suit. I really liked finding your channel because I think you're the first person I've seen in the classic menswear community who actually pulls off the pre-1910s look with clothing from that era or period-correct reproductions versus the guys who imitate it with more modern stuff. I had a chance to get a wing collar shirt, and I thought it would look really good with a silver tie for black lounge. Ended up talking myself out of it since it's not really "correct" anymore, but now I'm kicking myself knowing that there's someone out there who wears that combination regularly.
    I'm a bit more traditional in my style, as I own a black lounge suit (love that dress code) and morning coat ensemble, complete with correct hats and striped trousers. My everyday style is probably more 1930s-1950s, and I like that there's enough crossover with more modern clothing. Mostly so that if I see something I like, I can probably work it into my wardrobe somehow. I would assume that for the Edwardian style you'd be a bit more restricted in terms of material and cut to get the authentic look. Is there a lot of online shopping involved for things like collars, shirts and vintage items? When I bought my morning coat and morning trousers, I had to import them from the UK since I couldn't find anyone who sells them in North America (and it's ironic, since we're part of the Commonwealth so you'd think that would be a thing here). It was either that or getting them bespoke tailored. I've found too that for sourcing oddly specific things like hats and french-cuffs shirts, going online is the best option. Luckily there's enough vintage/second-hand places (plus a higher-end menswear store that has an awesome clearance section) around here that finding stuff for your everyday look is pretty easy, and there can be some real treasures too (got some buff and light-grey morning waistcoats with lapels and a black suit jacket that had all the right details for black lounge at that menswear place).
    I notice that people side glance me a lot even with a casual look, especially people my age. I can't help but wonder, but do you ever get weird looks going for a very classic look? I know that going for that look takes a lot of confidence, or it's just a gradual buildup that it becomes second-nature after a certain point. In my experience, if people don't admire you for having confidence for dressing that way, they can't deny that you look good. Thanks for this video, I think I'll be wearing black lounge in a more day-to-day setting now (aim for once a week to start). Really informative content too, I subbed. Sorry for the long comment, this gave me a lot to think about.

      I get side glances for simply wearing fishtail trousers and braces, people even comment on something as simple as a flatcap. I don't have an authentic 3-piece sack suit at this moment but I can't begin to imagine the amount of staring from people.

The oldest piece I own is a jacket from Hickey & Freeman from possibly the early 1900s before they switched their name to Hickey-Freeman. I inherited my father’s bespoke 1950’s suits (well, nabbed them actually, with his acquiescence) and I’ve had so many compliments over the years from complete strangers when out and about. Fortunately we are the exact same size which helps. The trouble is, it then spoils one for good tailoring because one realises how ghastly modern clothes are and one becomes exacting about cut, fit and fabric!

      That would be a very nice idea, but by this decade there are so many different types of trousers and styles and every tailor was a bit different, so comparing one or two items from one country to one or two items from another country wouldn't be a fair representation of those country's respective methods...and I don't have enough in my collection!
      If I used some images or online resources or spoke very generally then it would be possible! :D

Last thing in my collection are two trousers probably from 1910s. One of them are brown with red stripes. The second trousers are quite unique I would say. The fabric is thin, in light blue with stripes and it looks great. Could it be summer wear? They seem to be quite casual. Both have the cut I love. Roomy but with narrow trouser leg. And yes, it would be great to see more of your suits.

I think you should proudly wear it if you are so inclined. One of my all time favourite pieces of clothing was a mauve 1950s dress with a swing skirt that my Mum was gifted from an American relative. There was broderie Anglaise built into the bodice. In the late 1970s, when I was a teenager, Mum gave it to me. I cut off the over complicated cuffs to make short sleeves and replaced the worn and faded belt. I wore it regularly for years and it always made me feel like dancing. Your suit is much older, of course, so you may feel obliged to treat it as a museum piece. Either way, I can see it has already given you great enjoyment!

      That's amazing. I honestly think that clothes are meant to be worn, and so making it fit and suit you is the best thing you can do for it!

    Appears to be a typical mass produced or "off the rack" suit as worn by a midwestern business man or professional in 1895 or so. Made to fit a range of figures, the customer could come into the store, pick out a suit and wear it with minimal alterations. If you bought it new in 1895 they could have shortened the sleeves and if necessary the trousers and you could have had your suit the next day, maybe sooner if you were in a hurry.
    These suits were usually worn regularly and worn out in a few years. That is why so few survive, especially in such good condition. The more formal suits, being worn seldom on special occasions, stood a better chance.

    Hello from Wisconsin. Love this video and your TH-cam channel very much. I don't know if you tried getting info on your suit maker, but here is some info that I found:
    Polk's 1905-6; Kaufman, Eli, clothing.
    Also , vol 25, 1895; "The new clothing store of Eli Kaufman, Knoxville, Iowa was opened recently..."
    And finally Feb 10, 1905; "Wanted at once - a good clothing salesman and stock keeper, give references. Eli Kaufman, Knoxville, Iowa."
    I would say that your date estimates are spot on. Keep up the wonderful work, Sir!

    That suit looks as though it would be hot when worn but if you touch and feel that it is 100% wool it doesnt feel hot either even in 33 degree weather because it doesnt trap body heat. I have a frockcoat (made of 100% wool / 100% viscouse lining) and two morning coats, one made of 100% wool / 100% viscose lining? Not sure the label was in Japanese, and the one that made of 55% polyester with 65% rayon blend (what Google Translate said). I wear the latter more than the synthetic one. The frockcoat has the same feel when worn.

      Yes, that's because "sartorial people" like to be a bit more dandy I suppose.
      Suits back in the day were black. There was lots of black.
      But they were often either more formal garments or cheaper garments, like cheap suits.
      Frock coats, morning coats, 3 piece suits, overcoats.
      But there was also a lot of colour to be seen. Greys, browns, blues, purples, reds, greens.

    As someone who also dresses Edwardian I'd be curious if you had any advice on finding comfortable shoes! The closest I've found was buying Wolverine 1000 miles and use them with a good insole but most formal or period looking shoes are very uncomfortable to wear on a long period for a big walker like me.

    • @AntiqueMenswear
      @AntiqueMenswear  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello fellow Edwardian!
      I've bought shoes from all over the place and I've owned several pairs of antique boots in the past, but they're always so fragile and I hate wearing them out.
      I compromise on shoes. I get modern made shoes that are reproductions of antiques, and that's because a shoe is essentially a consumable. You can only replace the sole so many times before the upper dies too 😭

    • @afrenchguardsman6121
      @afrenchguardsman6121 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AntiqueMenswear Definitely, antique boots are too fragile for wear unfortunately! But, more fortunately, a lot of modern shoe companies make boots in a historical or heritage style (or completely pulled from a historical pattern like the Wolverine one which is essentially the same as their 1912 boot). It's just hard to find one that's comfortable and long-lasting while keeping the historical look so if you have any recommendation, any particular brand or model, it'd be very much welcome! :D

    I know im for wearing antiques i wear mine evn when going to the cinema n eat nachos but this is so rare (ne stock purple houndstooth) that maybe u should hand it to a museum ?
    About the French Bariere? i dont know what its called but I think that the the one on ur antine navy 1907 suit it was much longer n configured differently cause its a more recent suit. This purple suit is most likely older (i think c1895 cause in 1890 there would have been cuffs on the coat sleeves. Gain often older n or, or more conservative men migth ask a tailor for a suit out of an older pattern. So it could even be 1910 cept its got a label n since its american it was factory made, off the rack n so is definitely mid 1890s (most likely). Was it tailor made it could be much more recent i what i mean:
    The trouser buttons are origals btw

    • @AntiqueMenswear
      @AntiqueMenswear  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A museum won't care for it and will probably throw it in a box on a shelf for it to never been seen again. Most museums don't display 20% of their collections.
      It's exciting for us, but not for them.

  • @randelbrooks
    @randelbrooks หลายเดือนก่อน

    I ruined a double breasted waist coat similar to that by trying to wear it because the silk back shredded and pulled apart. I recommend having it copied with non-silk for all those areas. I had a bespoke suit made one time and insisted the tailor use silk and sure enough after a couple of years he had to go back in and completely replace it with a Bemberg modern suit lining. He was right. And that was using brand new modern silk. The chafing of the coat tore apart the silk at the nape of the neck. It looks like those trousers were never creased which started to come in in the 1890s and there's no lapel on the waist coat. They did not all have that feature but it suggests an earlier time when it does. That is a modern softer fabric than some of the original suits I have which is made from a cloth it's actually rather hard. It doesn't look like there are any cuffed buttons. Maybe it was a some white mass produced suit? It is very nice. The Tailors over in Thailand are very good at copying things like that at a very reasonable price. If you do that you can illuminate all the puckering in the back of your trousers.
