I got into antiques and antique clothing through my love of classic comedians, such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Fatty Arbuckle and Laurel & Hardy, and ...

Hello everyone and thank you for watching this video. I thought this would be a quick easy video, but it turned out it took a lot longer to edit.. Ahoy ! I wanted to share my experience as I'm currently coming off a success of starching a Darcy Imperial. This was the sole starched collar as I figured when I did try to starch them it would be the easiest to learn the technique. I do agree the grating method worked amazing and as it dried it became even more rigid and shiny. Here are some tips that can make this further feasible for people that want to try this . If you do not have access to a washer or dryer, for the spin wringing cycle try a salad spinner. As many if the items you'll be using will be in your kitchen already this allows you to control and get a better feel for how much starch is left and if you don't/can't run a washer unit to wring out excess starch. I found an ironing board worked fine, but caused unneeded push back and that by placing a thin towel over a counter instead it allowed more pressure and less transfer of fabric texture onto the collar. I was unsure on the soap amount (I used generic no name brand soap) as it's not stated but I went with 25 passes. Thank you for sharing your techniques, these have now become my daily wear. Your videos are both informational and entertaining .

My great grandfather had a monocle made of solid gold and the lense is some kind of crystal. My great grandfather wore it over his fake eye. He lost his eye in the Boer war and would just wear it to be funny and also had a special eyepatch for it to connect to just for the added joke. His remaining eye was apparently 20/20 for his entire life. It's expensive and completely useless and it's now mine.

Appears to be a typical mass produced or "off the rack" suit as worn by a midwestern business man or professional in 1895 or so. Made to fit a range of figures, the customer could come into the store, pick out a suit and wear it with minimal alterations. If you bought it new in 1895 they could have shortened the sleeves and if necessary the trousers and you could have had your suit the next day, maybe sooner if you were in a hurry. These suits were usually worn regularly and worn out in a few years. That is why so few survive, especially in such good condition. The more formal suits, being worn seldom on special occasions, stood a better chance.

I'm not understanding the process for when you fold the shirt collar down and you iron it and then begin the sewing process. The collar on both ends curves down where the buttonhole is and on the other side where the button that you will remove. So as you begin to sew when you get to the section where the buttonhole is that part curves down and it's shorter on that end. So you will sow that section down right over the button hole. So it seems something else must be done on both ends of the color as your completing the sewing, what is that please.
