      Excellent review. Bang on on every point. Lucky to own a 1980. They are docile off boost and then turn into a hell spawn split personality psycho. The pop on overrun. Another feature is the 9 heater controls that take up 20% of the handbook but nothing happens!. Well done. Epic review!

      I have driven alot of 930s when I was looking to buy.I drove 87 76 89 and 84 and then I drove a 78 Grandprix white 930 there was something different about this car that stood out comparing it to all the others. To me the 78/79 are hands down the 930s are the ones to own.

    On my second 930 in over 12 years. Not for the weak of heart, so visceral and constantly reminds you that you're driving a beast. No automatic this and that, no creature comforts by today's standards. Drive it like you stole it, but only after fully getting to know it. You don't have to make your wife a widow...

    Ah, the infamous 930 Turbo. A car you buy to teach yourself *restraint* ...
    Two factors to take account of. The first being engine location, which is a feature that appeared on the Tatra 87, a car built in the former Czechoslovakia fron 1936 onwards. That car placed the engine over the back axle, so that the car could have slippery aerodynamics (it was the first road car designed using a wind tunnel) and the passenger floorpan could be flat without an intruding transmission tunnel.
    However, putting the engine over the back axle introduces a less than desirable behaviour. The tail end tries to swing out if you enter a corner without more than the usual care and attention (all the more so on a pre-war live axle with leaf springs!). The Tatra 87 was commandeered by invading Nazi officers as personal transport, many of whom possessed machismo far in excess of their driving competence, and the end result was predictable.
    Indeed, more Nazi officers died in accidents involving badly driven Tatra 87s, than died in combat. The British secret service referred to the Tatra 87 as the "Czech secret weapon" as a result, and eventually, the Wehrmacht banned its officers from driving Tatra 87s to try and stem the attrition rate.
    So, move forward 30 or so years, and Porsche chose the same engine placement for the 911.
    This wasn't a *major* issue for the versions with relatively modest power output and linear power delivery. But when the 930 Turbo was introduced, with a combination of fire breathing power output and yawning turbo lag, it became lethal in the wrong hands - i.e., yuppies more concerned with status and showing off their income than learning how to drive the car properly.
    That turbo lag results in the car having acceleration that hovers around "meh", until the turbo spools up properly, at which point the acceleration becomes "Millennium Falcon hyperspace engage". The handling of the car changes *dramatically* as the suspension loads shift accordingly. Not a big problem in a straight line unless you drive like a mental asylum escapee, but an *enormous* problem if that transition - in either direction - occurs mid-corner, and one of the skills a 930 driver needs to master, is finding out which corners can be taken with the turbo spooled up, and which can't, along with setting the car up properly in advance in each case. Experience that transition between turbo output in snail mode, and turbo output in moon rocket mode, in a corner just once, and you *never* want to experience it again, if you survive the experience.
    This is a car you spend a decade learning how to drive properly. Doing so imparts skills that will serve you well in far more forgiving machinery. But *never* make the mistake of failing to respect what this car can do, because it does NOT suffer fools gladly.
    Learning how to drive a 930 Turbo properly, and how to make it cover ground quickly without saying hello to a pine box, will earn you respect among people whose opinion matters. Because like everything else worthwhile, you have to work at it.

    Love your energy and expressed passion for the vehicle. I dare say that these cars are not as dangerous or as deadly as their reputation suggests. General rule: Don't drive like an idiot and you'll be fine - notably, be sensitive with that brake pedal and unintended hand-of-God boost around corners. In a straight, the car is rock-solid. Those more daring and who know how to drive this car WELL (I'm not one of them!) can make this car just sing around a race track. And yes, to this day, the anticipation and eventual spooling up of that turbocharger is addictive and satisfying each and every time. 😁
    Great video production. 👍

    • @StudioMotors
      @StudioMotors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Frank thank you so much for the feedback, I appreciate it! I agree with you completely that it's just a gem in the right hands. You have to respect what it is and what is so pleasant about it. When I purchased my first Huracan, I searched hard for a 2WD because that was everything to me in that car. I also owned a 991 GT3 for a few years which I drove like you would want a GT3 to be driven. I hope I'm not coming off as "bragging" but just saying I've gone through some decent sports cars. But... when I jumped in the 930 for the first time, I approached it as if it's my first time in a manual sports car. I literally put aside everything I thought I knew and said "alright buddy, lets get familiar with each other". And even still, when you spend a few days in it in different environments, and start to think "yea, I got this", you really don't! It takes a lot of time and patience to master this car but as an enthusiast, it's a challenge that's so welcome. The car has grip but YOU have to find it, it will do none of the work for you. Just writing this makes me want to hit Mulholland in a 930 haha

    I grew up driving those canyons in the 70s and 80s in a 240z and my boss had a white 930. In 1991 my wife and I escaped our lifestyle in the music business and moved to San Luis Obispo, now at 62 there’s a new Porsche dealership open here and what do they have on the lot A 1998 white 930 ,l know it’s not going to be cheap but as soon as the transmission has been repaired I’m going on a test drive. Fingers crossed.

      @@johnrpizzaguy way cool, probably daddy's 930. I can't see young kids being interested in old technology...but then times are changing. After all, a 930 doesn't have cruise control, LED navigation screen or GPS, and is a million miles away from self-driving.

      Evelio! Thank you so much for the awesome feedback. I realize I was not clear in the introduction of the 930 video. The car we shot is definitely not a 1975, it is a 1977 Turbo, you nailed it. What I was trying to communicate is that the first Turbo came in 1975 from Porsche, but this one we are shooting is a 1977 example.
