I can't thank you enough Tom for your excellent camera work and outstanding presentation. Love the RAV4 shots at dusk. The neighborhood street lights add a nice touch.
Those extra mpg aren't free. Unless you buy a totally stripped down model, which will be hard to find, due to the added premium for the hybrid you'll never break even.
@@evanlandry9503 actually it's $800. Plus good luck finding one that's not loaded with options. My point was that finding a Rav4 hybrid that has a decent feature set and doesn't cost $35,000 or more will be pretty difficult. For example, although they are not the same vehicles, that is gas vs hybrid, I can get a Subaru Forrester Limited that has basically the same features as a Rav4 XSE for nearly $4,000 less than the Rav. You can buy a lot of gas for $4,000. That helps to mitigate the lower fuel mpg in the Subaru vs the rav hybrid.

Totally agree on the engine noise being excessive and unpleasant. I noticed that instantly when I test drove one, and it was a surprise. I feel like other reviewers have not made enough of a point of that. Makes it feel very much like an economy car, not a $35,000 car. Also, no CD player is just cheap on Toyota's part. As it hard touch plastic on the upper door, even on the XLE Premium.
Ha ha, your spin on the interior cab noise was brilliant, this Rav is unacceptable loud. Also not mentioned was that a snap in soundproofing pad placed under the hood would cure this, the approaches for this pad are already there. Toyota is now being forced to comment on this, thus your off hand reference to it. Smooth talking.
Tom I feel your pain when it comes to making recommendations. People know I am a walking book of facts when it comes to cars so I get asked a lot for recommendations. I always do my best to respond with things that match what the person asking me is looking for. Usually people end up going with exactly what I don’t recommend and then I have to hear about how they aren’t happy with their choice.
I wonder why the transmission lever is closer to passenger and that big knob is closer to driver. Strange! Otherwise as honest a vehicle as there is in marketplace. Not many vices. Now about that V6 RAV-4
What was Toyota thinking? Every review complains about the engine noise. How did they consider this car "market ready" with that rattle box and under the hood and crumby soundproofing?
Thank u Tom!! great review, as usual, and spot on that it's us who are threatened by climate changing, not the planet itself! Great to posit your opinion in reviews, love that!
Do you have any more details on the lane keep assist and dynamic cruise control? I tried both on my test drive and found the lane keep to be not great (and very dangerous when used in the right lane because it gets confused by exit striping), though the cruise control seemed quite good. The CRV's lane keep assist seemed smoother to me, but this is just based on short test drives. I'd be interested to know what conditions you used it with (you mentioned a long road trip-was there anything other than freeways?) and if it had any issues. Since the tech packages are the same across many Toyota models, it would be really useful to know more about how it stacks up against competitors! Also very excited to see your hybrid RAV4 review.
The engine noise isn’t any louder then any other suv. Especially if you have the radio and heat or ac on. The only crazy thing is $39k and no power passenger seat.
Toyota should learn a thing or two from Mazda CX-5 and CR-V when folding down those rear back seat with one level operation without extra effort to manually push the rear seat down after the latch etc.. LOL
I would love Toyota to come with a technology that improve the GPS to have live camera we can easily see the street when we are driving . Everything the GPS says and can see it through the camera.
Another great review, can you add a decent test of safety tech to your reviews please ? Its an ever changing area that makes new car purchasing difficult as the tech differs so much (and the dealers waffle about) - active cruise as an example - many have it, but only some you can use in city stop start traffic and it does it for you (we all must want that) but no reviewers tell us much or show us really ? My drives normally involve tons of city traffic, so however much I would love to chuck my car around and experience the amazing handling it may have, the reality is, I am sitting in a queue waiting for a red light to change :( ........ handling has gone totally from my choice of next car must haves, its irrelevant now in the real world most of the time, unless you live out-of-town (and I don't ). So many reviews show us a 0-60 or a swift blast around a country lane, or tight turn, but a quiet, comfortable car that takes a lot out of stop start traffic would be a god sent to me - I will sacrifice some country carving for it !
Perhaps in 2020 models, various models will get it then. It will be phased in slowly according to Toyota. They REALLY didn't want to add it. Like many other automakers, I've heard it's because of the data aggregation that Google performs, which is far more intrusive than iOS.
I’ve chosen this one over a nice equipped Tiguan RLine. Toyota does it better IMHO. It’s totally different though but I like hybrid drives so really there was no other choice.
Crossovers are just station wagons for people who refuse to buy a station wagon. And the crossover, weighs more, cost more, gets worse gas mileage, handles worse. No wonder they are so popular.
Had the new Rav as a rental and while efficient, the new Forester is quieter and rides better. I wish the cup holders had sat a little lower, I don't exactly want to rest my wrist and forearm on my travel mug. My other gripes with the Rav go to Safety Sense 2.0 where adaptive cruise does NOT like stop and go highway traffic, and found their lane keep system annoying compared to Subaru Eyesight. The HVAC buttons are also puny and need better labeling. Oh and god forbid your passenger not have their seatbelt on when you pull out of a parking spot, the RAV doesn't even shut up about it when you come to a stop like others do.

No worries sedans will make a comeback thanks to the continuing rise in crossover prices.
The price of a crossover is marginally higher than its sedan counterpart. The major cause of the price difference is the AWD system (typically $2k)
