Asherah: Did God Have a Wife?

  • Before coming to understand Yahweh as their only God, ancient Israelites worshiped a pantheon that included the great goddess Asherah. In Canaanite religion, Asherah often appears as the consort of the chief deity El. Later, archeology and about 40 mentions of her name in the Hebrew Bible suggest she was sometimes seen as Yahweh’s wife. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will reconstruct the history of the worship of the Divine Feminine in ancient Israel from the Biblical texts and the contemporary historical and archaeological records, tracing how Asherah’s attributes and cult, like those of El, were ultimately absorbed into the figure and worship of Yahweh.

    This is truly Amazing! These lectures are on par with, really even more in depth than, Joseph Campbell or Alan Watts. Your scholarship is absolutely top notch! Thank you. This is the best of what TH-cam is all about, finding a subject I think almost no one else in the world is interested in and then finding a giant community and a treasure trove of knowledge in you, John. You’re the absolute best, I look forward to your next presentation.

'God' later killed everyone except Noah's family . They then reproduced incestuously. No sex for a hypothetical Mr and Mrs 'God', no sexual reproduction. I know it wasn't based on fact, but I liked the way the movie the red tent covered Asherat. In that film, Abraham's daughter tells the story about how her father was a very great man who led their tribe through his close connection with God, but in the red tent where only women were allowed, they still prayed to Asherat for female things like for help in giving birth etc. Abraham finds out about it and gets very angry.
    It made sense to me that the women, not being included in the majority of ancient judiaism, would have held on to the one female deity they learned from their grandmothers.

      @achilles7607 That's what it has become, but the story was about Abraham's family, and the women didn't know what was to come and held on to Asherat until Abraham caught them and destroyed the idol. Even the Bible says in the early days Jews would stray to other gods and later on Isreal is punished for it.

      Oh yes absolutely...
      In general, multiple Israelites worshiped Ba'al and Asherah and any such Idols and they were punished for it(temporarily until they repented)
      But they were false Idols and nothing else.
      Because many people truly believe that they are part of the bible religiously(whether they themselves believe in the bible or not) which is absolute blasphemy.

      Tansy cakes were baked later for lent. Its interesting because Tansy is toxic so could cause an abortion. The timing might be the thing because then women would be getting pregnant in spring when food was once again abundant. That should help the tribe have healthier children and adult members. When life was a slim chance of survival, tribes couldnt afford to waste rescources. To this day , male oriented religion is at odds with female body and birth cycle control. Tansy cakes for lent were a sneaky way to continue that birth control/ family planning ability of the old Ashera side of of the Christian religion. Ashera and other female Goddesses were recycled to become the Virgin Mary in the Christian relegion. That finally brought both of the warring "sides" together.
      Also, it made the religion more palatable to Greek and Roman tastes whose women still had their choice of Goddesses to implore to for "female" issues.

      Well every translation has its problems as words exist in a historical, cultural and local context. So a lot of the meaning of a text is lost.
      The RSV (revised standard version trues at least not to hide Asherah's 40 mentions in. the stories.
      So outside of the time (2000 years and more), outside of the culture and outside of the region means the translator will misinterpret and we as a reader make it worse. We are unable to find out what the original author meant, but we can pretend to and wave stories that were never written with tge intent to be collected or have a shared meaning. Only colkectors put them together edited and fitted it to their needs.

    Interesting concerning the Asherah Pole destructions. Considering the Elephantine Hebrew Temple still worshipped Asherah and corresponded with the Jerusalem temple up until at least the 3rd century BCE, the editing to reject Asherah must have occured in the Septuagint or in sources only a little earlier.

      Do you have sources for your ideas? The English and German Wikipedia articles sound quite differently. According to them, the Elephantine community was formed from refugees after the 587 BCE destruction of the Jerusalem temple. Thus, these might be remnants of Ashera worship in the Jewish population of that time, which survived independently of its later abolition in Jerusalem.

      I don't think we know exactly when it was built, though The Jews of Elephantine asserted that it already existed when Cambyses conquered Egypt.
      The Elephantine Papyruses are the first account we have of how Judaism was practised during The Second Temple Period.
      How much of The Torah they knew is an interesting question.

      I can recommend The History of Persia Podcast for an account of what was going on at the time.
      Arguably there were actually three Jewish temples in existence at this time (mid to late Fifth Century) Elephantine., Jerusalem, and The Samaritan temple at Mount Gerizim.

    • @davidfrisken1617
      @davidfrisken1617 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@charlesmendeley9823 Search for "Elephantine papyri". Also, there were at least 3 main "Jewish" temples at the time(as Alan mentions above). Plus there may have still been Judian Yahweh Temples still functioning(where the priest got stoned on Cannabis in the Holy of Holies, as a means to talk to Yahweh - see Tel Arad. Perhaps the Moses and a burning bush story is also a reference to this practice ). This was still a very primitive time for the evolution of the various flavours of "Jewish" religion.

    You keep referring to the NIV as a modern translation. While it is modern it is a poor translation. They refer to it as a "functional equivalent" meaning that when they translated they focused on the meaning behind what they were translating rather than the actual words. Much better translations for this sort of work would be NASB, ESV or LSB (Which is the latest iteration of NASB). These are word for word translations the only differences being word order because the Hebrew and Greek tend to be order agnostic while English is very sensitive to what order words are used in.

    Asherah backwards looks like Hareh -sa as in Harah the wife of Zues...
    ...Hera is the goddess of marriage, women, and family, and the protector of women during childbirth. In Greek mythology, she is queen of the twelve Olympians and Mount Olympus, sister and wife of Zeus, and daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea.

    And same applies with the stories of Jealousy, misinterpreted to the traits of mankind or mistold to paint beings in a dark light where there is none, to cause fear and distrust. I think Plato was right, the stories have been very twisted. There are some of the gods who fell and they and their associates would have retold the stories in a light that benefitted their motives. The temple complex in Greece was destroyed by god because of the gods who fell, to prevent worship of them so as not it invoke evil, where there should be divinity.

    The great wars of the Gods. The gods of ancient times were the main theme of the emergence of monotheism through Abram who became Abraham. His father was an idol maker and his sacrifice of Issac was the common practice during the days of Baal worship. People still worship these ancient gods and goddesses. In the New Babylon , everything old is new again.

    Israeli scholars and archaeologists have over the past few decades have through field and scholarly work found that the people of Judea were commonly polytheists until the 600s b.c when the Persians freed the captives and the return of the people and the famous reading of (correct me if I'm wrong) Isaiah to the people and them taking on of monotheism. That it seems by what they can work out when WHWH became the one and only god it was acceptable for the Hebrews/Jews.

    At 1 hour 40 min and 18 seconds, the statement is made that the earth was created out of chaos but in Genesis chapter 1 verse 2 the word "was" seems to be mistranslated as it is strongs # 1961 hayah (haw-yaw), to fall out, come to pass, become, be.
    Therefore it should read in verse 2 "and the earth "became" without form...with without form being strongs # 8414. tohu, Phonetic Spelling: (to'-hoo), Definition: formlessness, confusion, unreality, emptiness; and void which is strongs # 922. bohu; Phonetic Spelling: (bo'-hoo);
    Definition: emptiness.

      "I have a good mind
      take into my head
      to start off singing

      reeling off a tale of kin

      Not my own idea.
      It was proposed by the controversial scholar Thomas L. Thompson.
      A lot of his ideas seem dubious to me, but I like this.
      It might be noticed that The Hebrew Bible has very little to say about Omri, which would make sense if he was a fictitious person.

      I suppose the "actual" founder of Israel was Jacob, but Omri was probably considered the first king of it before The Book of Kings muddied the waters with its own Inventions like Jeroboam.

    It's a kinda simplified version of what is known of the evolution of Hebrew religion, why leave out parts such as when El held a council of the gods and give WHWH is given the Israelites as his inheritance or, how Astorath goes from being gods wife to become the Shekinah?
    The evolution of the Hebrews religious beliefs is far more interesting than what is heard here which is a shame.
    I assume from this a hint of religion based bias which I understand but don't agree with, either tell the history as it was or don't bother because part of the story is still just a part of a very interesting and known history.
    Our narrator isn't a King James (whatever version) only Christian by any chance is he?
    Otherwise this was a decent listen while doing the washing up.🙂

    It's presumptuous to think that the reference to other gods in the bible are evidence that these monotheists believed in the existence of other gods. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ and a known monotheist talked about idols being other gods. Did Paul, therefore, believe in the existence of other gods? Obviously not.
    This teaching has to be read into the material because you don't get it from context. If you go by the context, you can understand what is being said. Lifting a passage out of context is called proof texting and is the sport of every charlatan in the religious world.
    Do I believe in the god Jupiter because I call the 5th planet in the solar system, "Jupiter"? Do I believe in the god of thunder, Thor, because I call it "Thursday"? Do I believe in many gods because I say that YHWH is God most high? When context is king then you get understanding but when you're pushing an agenda then context is worst your enemy.

      There is lots of other historical evidence that these ancient peoples were polytheistic until a certain point - archaeological evidence and other literary sources. Scholars don’t just go by the Biblical texts and their interpretations thereof. As soon as I read your objection, I suspected this was the case, and a little quick googling confirmed it. This is called checking your claims against evidence, and sometimes it’s very easy.

      @@yohei72 - The thing is that we KNOW idolatry was a problem in Israel. Hell, look at the Catholic Church. It's a problem in the Gentile world to this day.
      When Israel was wandering in the wilderness they made gods that they said brought them out of the land of Egypt. Polytheism is rampant.
      We know that this is a problem but we know that the people who believe in the God of the bible don't believe in other gods. We call those other gods, devils or demons.

    Contradictory Theology, Mathematics and Physics:
    1. The Genesis 1 character and the Genesis 2 character are the exact same character.
    2. 0 is not-necessary and 1 is necessary (Newton calculus).
    3. 0D is not-necessary and 1D is necessary (Newton physics).
    Non-contradictory Theology, Mathematics and Physics:
    1. The Genesis 1 character and the Genesis 2 character are polar opposite characters.
    2. 0 is necessary and 1 is not-necessary (Leibniz calculus).
    3. 0D is necessary and 1D is not-necessary (Leibniz physics).
    Interpreting the Bible with the Genesis 1 character and the Genesis 2 character as the exact same character generates near 70,000 contradictions (see reason project) and requires heavy apologetics. Cool box you've put yourself in, Religious nerds.
    [News flash]: Contradictions = false.
    The standard model of physics is 3+1 necessary space-time where 0 is not-necessary. In counting numbers 0 is the subject where positive integers (1, 2, 3, 4 etc.) are the objects. If the subject is not-necessary then who's doing the counting? Can objects count themselves? Cool box you've put yourself in, Science nerds.
    [News flash]: the universe has been "not locally real" for a year now.
    THEN: zero = not-necessary/nonzero = necessary
    NOW: zero = necessary/nonzero = not-necessary
    Zero is the most important number in mathematics and is both a real and an imaginary number with a horizon through it.
    It's geometric counterpart zero-dimensional space is the most important dimension in physics and is both a real and an imaginary dimension with an event horizon through it.
    0D monad (Creator event horizon)
    1D, 2D, 3D are spatial (space) dimensions
    1D line
    2D width
    3D height
    4D, 5D, 6D are temporal (time) dimensions
    4D length
    5D breadth
    6D depth
    7D, 8D, 9D are spectral (energy) dimensions
    7D continuous
    8D emission
    9D absorption
    10D black hole (Destroyer event horizon)
    The other side of the event horizon at the zero-of yourself (near horizon) is God.
    The other side of the event horizon of a black hole (far horizon) is not God.
    It's a mirror universe with 0D at the center. This side (Elohim; singularity) is contingent and less real, the other side (El; alone) is necessary and more real.
    Non-contradictory OT:
    Yahweh = always the bad guy
    Yahweh Elohim = always the bad guy
    Elohim = can be the good guy or the bad guy depending on context.
    Possessive context for Elohim is "God's".
    Plural context for Elohim is "gods".
    Genesis 1 Elohim is a title so we use the possessive context (true Elohim; singularity).
    Genesis 2-3 Elohim (Yahweh) is an epithet or "nickname" so we use the plural context (false Elohim; plurality).
    Pre-Babylonian captivity:
    El = title meaning God
    Elah = God's feminine title (think 7D, 8D, 9D)
    Elohim = sons of El
    Post-Babylonian captivity:
    El = God
    Elah = God
    Elohim = God
    This is called "syncretization" and some biblical character referred to as the "harlot of Babylon" did the syncretizing.
    Reading the Bible using the Pre-Babylonian captivity definitions of God's titles seems like a good idea 💡. Try using the NOG translation it's on Bible Gateway and doesn't remove God's titles or the name (Yah/Yahweh) of the deciever ("Maker" character from Genesis 2).
    Genesis 2
    Names of God Bible
    2 Heaven and earth and everything in them were finished. 2 By the seventh day ELOHIM had finished the work he had been doing. On the seventh day he stopped the work he had been doing. 3 Then ELOHIM blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, because on that day he stopped all his work of creation.
    The Creation of Man and Woman
    4 This is the account of heaven and earth when they were created, at the time when YAHWEH ELOHIM made earth and heaven.
    (What is the difference between created and made?
    The difference between something being created and something being made is that when something is created it is brought into existence out of nothing. But, when something is made it has been formed out of something else that already exists.)

      Also God is not a man nor a woman nor an animal.

      That's why there are commandments that we understand like don't kill or don't steal, and there are commandments that we don't understand like keeping the Shabbat or circumcising boys or not taking part in homosexual acts.

    You have an improper understanding of "Chaos" which is creative and not random or purposely violent as you describe. Chaos is needed to disassemble tyranny... and in this case, the tyranny of over reaching guardians insistent on keeping the greedy, abusive status quo that seeks domination rather than partnership between genders. The problem is, your brand of christianity is just as dualistic as the zoroastrian and middle eastern practices that you are trying to distinguish yourself from. Claiming that the greek Venus and "Adonis" story refers to the middle east certainly needs citation. This story (for me) has always hinted at homosexuality that excludes the opposite gender's importance entirely.

    Many ancient gods had wives - after all, man made god (the gods) in his own image. It’s unlikely that God has a wife, or needs a wife, or that the concept even makes much sense.
