To the enablers who downplay Neely's conduct on that night, I say: Yes, he did threaten the entire train car of people. His words have been reported by witnesses. Try again. He committed no less than 3 crimes that night, one of which was "Making A Threat To Cause Mass Harm" NY Penal Law 240.78. And it does NOT matter that he was unable to carry out his threats--under the law. He was stopped before he could carry them out. By declaring and yelling, "I want food. I want money. I'm gonna get it. I'll hurt anyone on this train. I don't care if I gotta get life in jail!"...he threatened the entire train car. Unless you believe (and some of you enablers do sound dumb enough to, honestly) that Neely meant getting life in jail for dropping a candy wrapper on the ground.

@@Ccc-ru7oe not only that but marines are definitely trained how to restrain someone without killing them.
I think a big possibility here, that no one is talking about - the marine was triggered by Neely. I have PTSD and one of my worst triggers is ppl yelling.
Just try to imagine this marine's unit hitting an explosive device in their tank and the amount of yelling that would happen right after the blast (in part because they still haven't regained full hearing after) as they struggle to gather up survivors and assist them. This exact thing happened to one of my marine friends.
I ain't even hating on the marine guy. Lord knows mental healthcare is completely ignored in this country and I don't see any way to fix this without universal healthcare. Houseless ppl don't have access to Medicaid. You need an address to get on that. The VA is practically useless with PTSD.

Neely CHOSE violence. He was in NYC, where shoplifters and looters are given free reign. He could've walked into any supermarket or store and walked out with a years' supply of food. Instead, he reverted to his natural instinct, which was to threaten and assault innocent people. YES, he would've assaulted someone...had he not been stopped. His rap sheet and violent past proves that. Violence was ALL he knew how to do. He lived violently...and died violently. Period.

Charles Murray wrote "Losing Ground' using most all the studies from 1960-1980, working thru what we can learn from them. The main take away was that the elite was throwing money at a problem that LOOKED like the most compassionate answer, but ACTUALLY rewarded the wrong behavior, so the most rational thing to do was the worst choice for the person's future. He updated it for 2015, adding that the only way to help would take the elite admitting they were wrong- so he had little hope for us. As here, the elite ACTUALLY expects the ones to pay the REAL, daily costs are the responsible poor so the irresponsible get to take what they want from THEM while the elite get the applause

That marine is taking all the heat and backlash that the State deserves, they're the ones who failed the people of NY by putting everyone in this situation. This is what happens when authorities do nothing and people are forced to defend themselves while the politicians sit on their high horses and and play the blame game as if they care. If they had to commute on the subway let alone sit in that cart they would've been grateful for someone like Daniel Penny the way the people on that train were. Ironically if everyone sat there and minded their own business, let the guy yell and escalate, social media would be erupting with fury because no one stood up to him.

Did Neely’s own movement & activity cause his neck to be more effected than was intented, meant to be? It appears Neely was totally out of it.
It is too bad Neely didn’t get the help he needed & wasn’t institutionalize if he again & again was found to be a danger to himself or others. NYC failed him knowing his history & mental illness etc. His mother should go after NYC & apologize to all on the train effected by her son’s threatening, scary behavior, including to Daniel Penny for all the trauma her son has caused him. Daniel Penny was protecting lives. It is too bad it took so long for the police to arrive on the scene. No one knows how many lives on that train would have been hurt or come to an end if Daniel Penny had not stopped Neely.
