Before I started watching this video I knew that Peter Rawlinson didn't consider Lucid to be a rival to Tesla, even though the title implies it. And in the video, the narrator repeats Rawlinson's insistence that Lucid is not a Tesla rival. They operate in different market categories. And until Lucid decide to go down-market, to make everyday affordable cars, they won't be.

Lucid CEO Peter Rowlinson worked at Tesla and saw first hand what will be needed to ramp up production--he also has over 30 years of experience in the automobile industry in various capacities--Lucid's car was just named Motor Trend Car of the Year in 2021 which you can be sure is going to ramp up demand even more
@@Sidowse Lucid doesn't need its own charging infrastructure--will those already present---and has a longer range than anything present now-so will run longer between charges and will charge far faster when it comes to charging--Mr. Rowlinson was the "brains" behind Tesla's success (despite what Musk and his ego may say)--this company won't go "bust" (far from it)--I suspect it will be bought out if anything
@@Sidowse I'm not going to bother arguing with you--the same arguments were made about Tesla in 2010 Simply PUT: Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson was the vice president of vehicle engineering at Tesla and was the chief engineer of the Model S. He’s the guy who basically engineered Tesla’s first flagship EV. Meanwhile, Lucid’s chief engineer, Eric Bach, helped launch and grow the Model S and Model X brands at Tesla. He even planted the seeds for the Model 3 launch. Lucid’s top lawyer, Jonathan Butler, was formerly Tesla’s second-in-command lawyer. Their vice president of supply chain, Peter Hasenkamp, previously established and executed the sourcing plan for the Tesla Model S. Lucid’s vice president of manufacturing used to be Tesla’s vice president of production. And their senior director of sales was formerly Tesla’s lead of sales operations. They were all there during Tesla's infancy and development--and Rawlinson especially is "driven" to repeat this process with Lucid (this time not having to deal with Musk and his histrionics) The fact that there first car was just named Motor Trend Car of the Year in 2021 tells you they are well on their way to this realization

A lot of big car markets released new product lines in EV market. Lexus, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Honda Acura, etc. Lucid Air doesn't have anything superior than any Tesla or other EV model. Creating a costly car under concept scale or limited scale is easy. Mass production is totally different story. After 5 months from your comment, did you see any realistic plan from Lucid Motor for mass production and sale?
How many times do we have to explain... Tesla has no competition. You can't say lucid competes with tesla when they haven't sold a single car, tesla will sell about a million this year and possibly 3 million next year.

Great video. Any company which can out perform Tesla on range deserves respect. 520 Miles EPA certified range for the Lucid Air long range version is 105 miles more than the best Tesla long range version. Lucid has some seriously good tech and a bright future in front of them.
But the question is, for how many people does the extra range matter? I can't think of a time where I had 400 miles of range and needed 100 more. That is almost 6 hours of solid driving. Most drivers tend to stop and take breaks every 2 to 3 hours. In fact, when Carwow did the range test and competition between the Audi E-Tron GT and the Tesla Model S in the UK, they found the limiting factor was the drivers, not the cars. There is only so far you can drive before needing food, restrooms and breaks...
When you considered degredations to range such as cold weather, hvac and hilly terrain, you end up with just about enough rather than coming up short. No one ever complains about too much range.
Even though he used to work at tesla. He still don’t know all of what Elons doing, for sure Elon has something up his sleeve and will not go careless. Tesla is the pioneer and still be way ahead of all EV’s.
Tesla is ahead because it ventured earlier in the ev market than anyone else. We all knew when other companies get into it it'd be only a matter of time before they catch up. Lucid air has better range, Porsche has better performance, Mercedes EQS has better interiors.

Well if Tesla did not have real competition, we would have to pay massive amount of money for a tesla model. This way the price is lower and better for us. Thanks for leaving Tesla.

Good video. Rawlinson Tech is on par if not better in efficiency than Tesla. As a 4 Tesla Owner , I see that is a great alternative to an upscale more luxury ev with range and performance !
But, they will have to go through the same growing pains as Tesla. Open sales and service centers. Get their charging infrastructure figured out. Get people interested in paying a premium for that car over Tesla, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, etc. Can Lucid deliver the car, the service and the location for them to sell enough cars to become profitable, that is the question. There is a reason all the premium brands are usually owned by a larger brand with deep pockets or constantly dancing on the BK line and trying to find spare change in the sofa cushions each month...
So interesting and inspiring. And especially how Tesla in the past had quality control issues, and LUCID wants to make alternative to luxury brands- meaning they are saying the lucid is a level higher in quality and finish.

The bulk of these Tesla fanatics are burning up right now as Lucid is going into production. After the launch all yhey will talk about is the 0 to 60 of the Tesla Plaid and when Lucid launches the tri-motor with 1500hp all that will be left is: but Lucid is producing 100,000 vehicles and Tesla is producing 1,000,000 vehicles. The Lucid tech is superior in many aspects: The Lucid single motor weighs less than half that of Tesla and produces almost 50% more power. The Tesla Range is at least 20% better than most and Lucid is at least 20% better than Tesla. The Quality battle is definitely won by Lucid, anybody that sat in a Lucid including the Tesla fanatics confirms that. The performance battle for the single and dual motor is also bye bye Tesla. The Tesla crowd is definitely feeling the heat and you can tell by their reaction on anything related to Lucid. Tesla is an EV tech marvel but the undisputed truth is the quality is shait. LUCID is attracting the Tycan buyers, EQS and other luxury ICE's like the Audi, BMW, Mercedes. You can pack a 1000hp in a 350Z and some people will definitely buy it but highly unlikely that you it will draw much of the ferrari client base. If Tesla had proper financial backing back in 2007 before it went public in 2010 probably the 2020 achievements would have been had in 2015. Lucid is financially secured through the solid backing of PIF, pouring an extra few billion in it over the next few years is like a drop in the Ocean. Thumbs up to Tesla for its achievements so far but its Lucid's time now so to all the Tesla kookoo's Get your popcorn ready, sit down because we can't see the screen The movie has already started 😀 😉
Yes, Tesla which just announced the biggest quarter ever and will close out the biggest sales year ever is obviously terrified of a company that has delivered zero cars so far, and is competing in a price bracket where the volumes are exceptionally low and profitability very much uncertain. I find it interesting that Lucid is attracting "Taycan buyers, EQS and others", really? Every one of those ZERO Lucid owners that have been sold so far are reporting getting rid of their cars already? Who knew? And I find it comically stupid that you think Tesla could have accelerated its 2020 progress to 2015 with just more money. You appear to be one of the geniuses that think if a woman takes 9 months to make a child, 9 women could obviously make a child in 1 month. So, you took Tesla fanboyism, dialed it up to 120 and think THAT is how the world actually works? Interesting....
Elon's biggest rival is quality control at the end of the assembly line. You'd think after YEARS of the same ol', he'd get it addressed. Not sure what's so difficult about having QC workers at the end of the line with a checklist and if something doesn't make the cut, the vehicle does NOT leave until it's fixed. If other companies can do it, so can Tesla. This "well fix it later when the customer takes delivery" nonsense isn't going to fly now that other manufacturers are getting seriously into the EV game.
From what I've seen (so far) "Elons biggest nightmare" seems to stem from a less than stellar US workforce? The same cars built in "the other" factory don't seem to have the "publicised" problems? Berlin will almost certainly confirm this.
It seems to work real well for Tesla. Maybe they have realized where it is important apply their energy and effort? The stock value and the sales numbers actually prove that. Panel gaps and similar is a very small part of quality. Software, electronics, efficiency, performance, durability, charging network and so on are much more important.
I am sure there will be harmful byproducts. As almost nothing can be recycled 100% and without ANY harm. But guess what: even more with fossile fuels. And about long term sustainability i suggest you read a few newer studies about battery lifespan in EVs (interesting stuff). With a degradation of 10% at about 200k miles i am pretty sure most parts of a conventional engine have degraded much more not even counting in the many times you had to go to regular service and invest back into it. To be honest i drive 12500 Miles at a MAX per year, usually its about 6500 miles. In that scenario i am sure i'd WANT a new car before the old ones battery has even lost 10% capacity. And i had to drive it for 32 years. I doubt the other parts will hold out long enough due to material fatigue, the battery will probably be the last thing dying in that car.

For now they do but they were really the first mass produced ones. And as someone said above it was a status symbol to own a Tesla and therefore a part of something Elon Musk helped create. You far overestimate how much Musk claims to allow other companies to use his technology against how much they are actually allowed to use it. So far any claim to open their supercharger networks have been unfounded, their physical battery and motor technology they keep secret, and their stance on right to repair is some of the strictest.
Elon is not founder of Tesla, he bought it from someone. Second, stop kissing his ass.

Even if competitors make a better car, they still have to achieve volume production, achieve the same longevity on their cars as Teslas, and be just as affordable as Teslas
@@Sidowse I'm not going to bother arguing with you--the same arguments were made about Tesla in 2010
Simply PUT:
Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson was the vice president of vehicle engineering at Tesla and was the chief engineer of the Model S.

Before MR. Rawlinson joined Tesla in 2009 he was Chief engineer for Jaguar and Lotus at different times if his career. That is why he was accepted or most likely headhunted by Tesla.
Great video. Any company which can out perform Tesla on range deserves respect. 520 Miles EPA certified range for the Lucid Air long range version is 105 miles more than the best Tesla long range version. Lucid has some seriously good tech and a bright future in front of them.
Yeah....... but at what price point..?
Enough with the Tesla comparison.match it with Taycan. (Lucid ftw)

Most EV companies outside of Tesla have failed. Many are able to make a prototype or two and never made it to production before going bankrupt.
The Lucid tech is superior in many aspects:
The Lucid single motor weighs less than half that of Tesla and produces almost 50% more power.

I find it interesting that Lucid is attracting "Taycan buyers, EQS and others", really? Every one of those ZERO Lucid owners that have been sold so far are reporting getting rid of their cars already? Who knew?

Software, electronics, efficiency, performance, durability, charging network and so on are much more important.

not sure of their after life tbh-could still harm the enviroment

@@markplott4820 Are you going to work for Tesla then? They have excellent pay and relaxing work hours. They even get lots of benefits! It's SOOO good!!!!!
So nice 👍
LOL 😂 😂 😂 LOL TH-cam needs more comedy channels like this!
Lets not forget that half a second shy can be seen as a trade off for superior long range performance impart by a heavier battery pack in lucid air. .
It's worth repeating a million times: "Competition is good for EVERYBODY. Period."
Collaboration beats competition
There were many Ex Employees of Apple too who could not make big in rivalery
This reminds me of how Lamborghini worked for Ferrari, Then of course went on to create the Lamborghini brand as Ferrari number 1 rival.
Good comparison but that won’t happen. Elon is one of a kind
World needs people like Elon
We love Elon period, you can’t compare him with Elon
I seen one in Houston on 1960. I knew it was different from first gaze! Didn’t see a name on it
The brand image of Tesla has bn too positive n deep in the EV Market. Assuredly it is hard to compete wt the Super Genius Elon Musk.
I loved their deliveries made in cali. This stock will explode. I made profit off my Call Options.
Oof these Tesla fanboys in the comment section are just here to put up excuses about how tesla will always be the best even though it wouldn't
You mean like the Tesla haters that claim Tesla's are terrible cars, Tesla will go bankrupt and never make it, Tesla killer number 10204332 is here and NOW Tesla REALLY is doomed.... really... honest... THIS TIME... Yet Tesla sales keep going up, they are building 2 new factories and every OEM is saying they are the benchmark they are trying to catch up to....
No nothing nightmare
Tesla is ahead of everyone else an it’s going to be that way for a long time
Always innovating
It's good to see that the car industry are really taking electric seriously now all around the around. CO2 in cars needs to stop
Yeah, CO2 is the problem. Let's just ignore the lithium batteries that have to be disposed of when they aren't good any more. 🤣
CO2 in cars needs to stop ? How ? Are you just not gonna breathe ? :D
@@californiacritic9779 So whats your proposal ? Keep going with fossile fuels ? Because it is more sustainable to pump oil out of the ground, then ship it to a harbor, from there send it to a refinery, refine it, send it back to the harbor/ship, then drive around the world, again back in a harbor, then locally distribute with trucks ? Its an ongoing process of disposal in so many ways, yet you complain about a still rather new technology in the automotive space..
Lets wait and see how much can be recycled and reused and what the final bill is instead of complaining at the first sight of something new.
This is like announcing an All-Star PeeWee football team will have an exhibition game against an NFL team.
Biggest rival? From someone who hasn’t delivered a single car yet? When Lucid is profitable, let me know.
@Jason Pike let’s not get ahead of ourselves. 10 years is a long time. Let them make it past the first or second year without going bankrupt first. In the meantime, Tesla will be too far ahead for Lucid to even be considered a competitor.
True. Still - I already got some Lucid shares. As Tesla already is too expensive. 😉Waiting for SpaceX IPO though.
And how long did it take Tesla to become profitable?🙄
@@frankly5171 That’s exactly my point. When (if) Lucid becomes profitable, maybe they can be considered a competitor but certainly not a rival.
Starting with 20% better range ! Equivalent performance for the single and double motor ! PIF financial backing ! Confirmed talent ! Will they ba able to do mass production? Maybe and maybe not.....but they are definitely a threat and you can see it from Elon Musks behaviour in the last year.
Modern Family Fans: This is Earl Chamber and Jay Pritchet 😂😂😂
I love reading the tesla fanboys hating on Lucid. It just gives me more assurance that they are worried AHAHAHAHA #LUCIDTESLAKILLER
@Author B.L. Alley Exactly, small EV market share for now. And many people who have money don't buy Tesla because of the quality, so that might change with Lucid. They need the $$$ price tag to grow (economy of scale). After they establish themself as a quality manufacturer, the cheaper models will come. And remember, they don't sell cars; they sell technology. It would be best if you did more research before commenting. I don't hate Tesla. I'm an earlier investor, but I think Lucid will be a fantastic company and make a lot of people rich. But what do I know? I'm just a piano player...
@@yes-wn4rq Hey, we need the bears. Most of these guys are not even bears though, they just have no vision at all. There are plenty of bears that can also see when a company is going to fail, they just actually can properly read the numbers/future/ tea leaves , etc. and can see the future business struggle, while the rest of the other " bears" just say stupid things like: " uh, duh..uh, they don't have profits yet. uh, duh, uh.. they don't have a car on the road yet"
Some people just need to see it to believe it. But I , personally, am glad those types exist, because it keeps the price down for me. Then, ,once they see it, they come in and buy the stock at exorbitant prices, all the while lining the pockets of us tech players that can " see it" .
We really should thank them for making us rich.
Dacia ist the best
Agreed
@Author B.L. Alley camouflaged tesla fan boy 😎
Another next level innovation by Lucid..👌👍
Rival? Tesla has more car in space, than Lucid has to customer!
Now lucid needs a burn heal after this roast 😏🤣🤣🤣
Rawlinson to Lucid Motors may be the best thing that ever happened to Tesla, and the EV consumer. The Lucid Air is getting rave reviews and is worthy of your consideration.
When haven’t produced a production car makes you Tesla’s biggest rival. 🙄
The Lucid tech tells it all. Production is on its way. We are not talking years or month but weeks.
Tesla fanboys are something else.

Source! Lucid Motors.
Do some research.
At a glance @5:47 they almost look identical !
I do question why Lucid made a saloon car - that in my book is a fundamental error of judgment. Had they created an SUV, they would have 'milked' the market.
The Baby is so cute
They have an SUV coming
It would be nice if they start the tri-motor setup in the 2023 Lucid Gravity. With roughly 1500hp it would be the quickest SUV in the world. A luxury SUV that can do 9.5 in the 1/4 mile and under 2.5 seconds 0 to 60 with 6 seats. It would cause quite a stir
@@hussamalyafai3708 The tri motor variant gets 2000hp by the way. But I just don’t think and SUV needs to do 9.5 in the QM. That just seems excessive. I think the plaid is overkill too.
@@danhersey2531 Ageed, but having so much power and torque on tap making just everyday driving much more pleasurable. With such power overtaking is a breeze, a bit of throttle and the vehicle moves swiftly and gracefully. I just drove a Tycan turbo S a few days back and I was really impressed by how easy the power buildup even at half throttle and the ambiance is miles away from the model S 100d I had. Add a couple of more seats for the school runs or a 6 person dinner outing 👍 I know that's not everybody's cup of tea but hey to each his own. In addition Having 4 doors and SUV's achieving such performance shows what EV's can do especially to the ICE croud that are unaware of how far EV's have come and their potential. Having high range with faster charging makes us less reliant on chargers and opens up new markets until the charging services catchup.
My 2 cents 😀
Sold my LCID stocks at 46, it’s 36 now. I hope I get some reasons to buy it back. I got TSLA stocks from the sale.
Nice try… I think I’ll double down on my Tesla stock now
Why only double, you should quadrapul or pentaful
Hey I can't believe dreams come true and it includes who and what would be a favorite in discussion of Electric Vehicle.
Wait, so it took him 3years to design and build a Model S at Tesla. But has taken 8 years to do the same thing at Lucid?
One day Peter Rawlinson will beg Elon Musk for a Cup of Tea
Hmmmmm…. Tesla has been around for over 12 years and lucid less than a year… I don’t think lucid will be a problem for quite a few years….
Tesla has the fastest accelerating production car in the world despite having competitors from car manufacturers 120 years old so who knows what these startups could do in a few year’s time.
@@UProductions457 yes, I understand that. But when legacy car manufacturers say they should be where tesla is in 5 years. Do you think tesla will sit around for 5 years waiting for them to catch up? Very unlikely. Lucid has the edge, the CEO has the battery and motor technology from Atieva ( formula e cars) and the money from the kingdom in Saudi Arabia so he might climb the ladder a little faster as far as getting a dependable EV on the road. How many service center’s does lucid currently have nationwide? 3 maybe 4? Does he plan to have production plants worldwide like tesla? I know they plan to use electrify america as their charging stations. Right now electrify america is marginal at best for their quality of service. Yeah, I think lucid has a ways to go… I want to see how many years it takes to degrade that 500 mile battery of his. 10 year old tesla batteries have been degrading at a rate of 10% over 10 years. Wonder how the lucid battery will fair.
@@alanl3511
Regarding battery degradation this is where range will play a huge role.
Charging upto 80% and recharging at 20% can almost double the battery 🔋 life. That's much easier to do with Lucid owners as they start with much higher range.
For a Long Range model S tesla starting with 405 EPA range at 10% degradation, after 5 years the vehicle will have approximately 200 miles of range vs 520 miles EPA range for the Lucid it should have a 260 mile range.
Although Lucid has not delivered any cars yet but we can confirm that they have been successfully suppling formula E for 5 seasons now and their tech relies heavily on range under high performance conditions. There is more in Lucid's favour to do well in this category. Only time will tell.
@@alanl3511 Legacy manufacturers have sustained riches and recourses from actually selling cars instead of the stock market like Tesla. They will catch up very soon. The only reason they are behind now is because we have the first EVs rolling out from these companies when Tesla has made them for 13 years. There is no doubt that some of the brilliant engineers that work for these automotive giants will bring new technology to the table. Think of these first attempts as a rushed essay that they did on the last day before it was due. The second attempts will be well thought out vehicles that will probably be really good.
@@UProductions457 go to Munro live on TH-cam and look at the dissection of the Mach-e. You will see how Ford piece mealed this vehicle together from a combination of ice vehicles and EV parts. If they don’t look at creating an EV from the ground up they will never catch up.. Lucid is ahead of the legacy car makers even though they have no EV cars on the road. Once Lucid gets rolling they will crush Ford, Chevy and dodge in the EV market… Peter knows how to build an EV, he should, he worked for Tesla for 10 years.
I love seein this stuff...it makes me powerful
Wow Elon’s Competition hasn’t produced anything.
