I've felt so sick of hearing people say world issues aren't political, or can just be fixed with a vote. I'm trans, and it feels very much like the places that have two major parties in many places don't feel comfortable to vote for (I'm Australian, we do have some rights, but it still isn't perfect for say, Americans, where there's only the two parties really, and both sides aren't the best right now), and for us to feel accepted we're very often screwed by the system already. A vote is just pick your poison. This goes for many different things, sometimes it just doesn't feel like either side supports you. And on climate change, I feel the same as you about the rich, it is extremely concerning how much power they have, and it doesn't feel like I can do too much to change that. The system itself needs to change and we need equality, and fast. I'm rambling, oops, but seriously know that you are superb for what you do for the world. Also, best wishes to Amita and their campaign, they sound amazing!
Very thoughtful of you to think of workers. People cutting trees in the Amazon are often struggling with extreme poverty, pushed by people who aren’t. To act against climate change, we need redistribution of wealth, to give the poor a choice, and take away that unfair lever from the rich.
Kurtis, thank you so much for opening my eyes to how detrimental and urgent climate change is. Not too long ago, I, like you, was once a "climate change denier", not in the traditional sense, but in the sense of how I didn't see just how horrible the situation currently is. This is truly an emergency, which is on track to cause more damage than any war or pandemic we've ever had. Videos like yours give me hope though.
On this video specifically, I'd say This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein for climate stuff, and for wealth redistribution: Utopia for Realists by.... I forget, but there's a link in the video description
Social justice is extremely hard and I think broadly unsolved. Maybe even harder to solve compared to climate change, because in case of climate change we kinda know what to do. I am on the side of technology and economy arguments. We need to make fossil fuels more expensive and renewable energy less expensive. Therefore I support renewable energy research, I myself studied it and I just got masters degree in renewables. What you are doing is increasing the costs of fossil fuels directly and that is very important. To further accent this trend, I believe global carbon tax could be very powerful in fighting climate change. After all, prices rule everything. If renewables are cheaper option people and companies will take it, no persuasion needed.
0:22 same thing happened to me in nigeria... I was there 2018. Wasn't fun waking up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat... and when we ran out of water, the wait for fresh water was torture! I couldn't wait any longer, so I fetched water from the well, boiled it and burned my mouth while drinking it... if we don't do something about the increasing heat, things will get way worse than my experience in nigeria
Noah .. I would recommend you go talk to the local groups and listen to their views. Find those that can tell you about the local issues and how they intend to solve them when they come to power. So many parties are populated with parrots who have little understanding of local context and just want to dangle green policies without dealing with legacy. Good luck... and regardless of who you join make sure they understand why you have chosen them.
The problem with wind and solar is that their production currently requires significant amounts of rare earth elements, so that there won't be enough to power the whole planet. This is in addition to the inherent unpredictability of the power source, since it depends on the wind blowing or the sun shining. To have an electric grid like the one we have now, there needs to be a stable baseline. Otherwise we would have to significantly change the way we use electricity. And that takes too long. We need the climate solutions NOW, actually we needed them yesterday. And nuclear power is the only completely CO2 neutral stable source we know of. It is also a myth that it has more dangers - actually modern nuclear plants are designed so that even when something goes wrong, it is completely under control. This also makes them much cheaper, because the high price of standard nuclear is caused by the need for zero error tolerance.
@@okanagansage modern nuclear plants are built with several layers of completely passive safety measures. even if a meltdown were to happen with nobody in the building to do anything about it, it remains contained and, in fact, is halted by the addition of a large amount of water. completely passively. nuclear is the only way forward. don't spread this misinformation that nuclear is "risky" or "dangerous", because it just simply isn't.
@@LeaHildebrandtRossander Rare earth elements? That's only used minimally in the industry. That has been debunked. For "intermittency" of power, there is hydro, geothermal (constant) and battery storage (with the plunging cost of them). Renewables are safer and faster to build and cheaper. Nuclear safe? Ask the Japanese. Earthquakes, tsunamis, terrorist attacks. Don't take my word for it. Look at where the money is being invested.

I am a physicist, and on top of the sad increase of fossil energy use, and increased electricity prices, it was also a huge blow to the scientific community. Lots of big projects that were developing new science for nuclear energy had to be closed, since the reactors weren't allowed any more 😔
I suspect a large percentage of the oil is already being moved by rail instead of the pipeline, though I understand that rail may have a lower capacity than the pipeline. However, rail has a higher risk of accidents spilling large quantities of crude than the pipeline. The oil will move as long as there is a demand, of course, due to market forces. Do you think the additional likelihood of rail spillage is worse than the pipeline? Or is the pipeline less environmentally friendly due to the clearing and heavy industrial work required to install it despite the reduced spillage risk over rail? I understand pipeline disasters are a different scale, but many minor accidents add up, too.
Another reason why pipelines are really bad is because they're adding infrastructure to the oil industry. That can make it harder to transition away from fossil fuels, and we really need to transition away from fossil fuels fast!

The politics in germany are a little bit different. We got a lot of parties of which 6 parties have a noticable amount of votes. Usually what happens is, that the 2 center parties and one or 2 smaller ones get into a coalition to reign as they please (so just placebo discussions during the 4 year period). That means, that lobbyism here is actually quite the thing, as on that point, nothing is holding you back from taking the money and going all out against all sense and justice. Im talking supporting Nord Stream, Building another Coal Powerplant, lowering the financial support for renewable energy, granting a bonus when you buy a car (gas, diesel or electric), saving plane companies with billions of euros without having strict regulations on what they shall do with it, even when they are proven the not pay taxes by having letterboxy and daughter companies in suitable countries. The list goes on a long way. At least we got a trend since the last election, that the 2 biggest parties are losing votes at quite the fast rate. And the left and green parties are gaining a lot. Sadly there is also a relatively new right party that gained an absurd amount of votes. Like +10% in a period of 4 years. (Talking climatechange denial, proven racism and faschism, hustle, etc.) At this point I just hope for a minority government so that the green party finally has impact in the goverment. TL;DR German politics are f*ed up, but they might get better. I don't actually don't know why I actually wrote that, but it seemed like quite a lot of people didn't know how politics "worked" in germany. So there is that..
If we are serious about the climate crisis then dealing with our energy needs should be our top priority. As far as I can tell, a new energy network will have to rely on a large grid powered by big solar farms, wind farms, dams and so on (to be efficient). Anyone who talks about changing society to be more equitable sounds like they aren't taking the problem seriously. Unless sustainable solutions become so miniaturized and cost effective that everyone can easily afford them to provide for their own power needs (and thus equity is easily achieved), then we are looking at a system that will seemingly be best served by bigger institutions like corporations or governments (for better or for worse).
I don't think it's wrong to ask the gov for infrastructure rather than have each household pay for it individually. Imagine landlords here for a second. That idea would never work out
@@carolime13 Asking for infrastructure to be developed sounds like a perfectly genuine and direct way to address the climate crisis. Asking for the government to solve all inequality (by doing things my way) sounds disingenuous and it doesn't directly follow from the big issue we have before us.

Granted I have studied geology and drilling for fossil fuels, (I studied more on watersheds and the impact of AMD via ephemeral streams.) BUT!... I am not a climate denier, I am not a person who pushes for nat. gas and oil production. I am not a person who denies that pipelines intrude on environmental ecosystems. BUT. In a geological standpoint/frame of mind, the process of horizontal extraction of nat gas and oil is not invasive as some may think. An area, of say 1 square mile of infrastructure, can produce an area of hundreds of miles along ""fault lines"" (strike/dips) and basic stratigraphy. It's a difficult standpoint that this comment makes, but in this day an age, we do not have govt. officials who are able to pull masses together and say, "Hey! Let's stop the fracking industry! I know that it's a quick and easy way to produce energy and while it does bring loads to the economy, we have to stop this action. Let's move towards a more expensive infrastructure (at first) for clean and renewable energy. i.e. geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar. I personally don't think we are comfortable enough yet as a species to toss dirty energy out. Unfortunately this is a business model and money is involved. I hope that one day in my lifetime we as a species is able to look at cost vs impact, and choose impact over cost...
I agree with just about everything you said in this video except one small thing: "free" healthcare. When you use the term free, it plays into that conservative with a capital C narrative that we are all bottom feeders just leeching off of the system and we want everything for free and aren't willing to go out and work for it for ourselves. That could not be further from the truth. When people say free healthcare I think what they mean is they want to get what they have paid for. We're all paying for a healthcare whether directly or indirectly, in the United States, and what the left is asking for is not free healthcare but rather getting what we have paid for without getting ripped off. I think everybody can agree that getting what you've already paid for is a reasonable thing and an expected thing in many circles of our economy. In fact, if somebody does not get what they paid for then that is considered quite a bad thing and in some cases a crime and many people will take that to court because it is not right. If only we could apply logical thinking and mathematics and facts to all things.
I agree with this guy on the pipeline protest. I don't agree with attacking rich people, the rich do create millions of jobs, which stops people getting into poverty and create billions in Taxes.. which keeps people out of poverty. But I am against the Pipeline.
Walk around inside your house and take everything that is plastic, polyester, or nylon and throw it all out in a big pile in your yard and see what's left in the house. It won't be much. Those are all petroleum-based products. Petroleum is so intertwined with our lives at this point that is truly unfathomable by most people.
They already are. Keep up, Geek. The pipeline is the thing that is not affordable. It such an economic gamble that the original company building it decided not to. Then the government bought it, and pumped in several billion dollars in subsidies and still it seems economically risky to the point where most of the insurance companies have decided to stop insuring the pipeline. On the other hand, renewables are more affordable than ever, they are rapidly displacing coal and gas, and they are clearly the infrastructure we need if we want to survive on this planet. I appreciated the unbiased and simple explanations, even though I understood the topics well beyond the explanation given. The simplicity and well thought out presentations helped me be better at explaining scientific facts to people who aren't blessed with our level of intelligence and knowledge. It was basic, cold-hard science, to the best of information available. I'm really sorry your channel turned towards politicized topics. I am certain that politicizing matters turns people away, people who may have been willing to listen to scientific arguments but are immediately turned away by a political stance. I am not a climate change denier, but I always prefer a discussion about this topic to be based on facts and rational solutions, in order to not drive away the skeptic crowd. We, the people who trust science and are willing to make changes, are a minority, so alienating the skeptics instead of trying to reason with them is a mistake. We're already a minority, turning people against us won't help... Just my 2 cents. I know from experience that politicizing a matter won't solve it, it will only make people ignore facts and support even harder their own stance based on beliefs, feelings and preconceptions. Time for me to unsubscribe. Best of wishes

While Income inequality is a huge problem. I do have to take issue with equating net worth with actual wealth. The vast majority of billionaires' wealth is tied up in stocks which are unrealized assets. When stocks are sold, they are taxed. They're also taxed when they're traded. They're just not taxed when they're held like basically any other asset. Unlike any other asset their value changes rapidly (usually increasing). The vast majority of Jeff Bezos' wealth is tied up in the company he started. If he were to sell it all, the value would fall sharply, decreasing not just his networth but the value as a whole. How do you tax assets that change in value minute by minute? how often do you tax a single item thats just being held? I'm not disagreeing that there is huge problem. I'm disagreeing that this money exists as a real asset and is useable by really anyone, even Jeff Bezos can't use it unless he sells it or trades it. What is your solution for getting billionaire's money? I guess my problem with this isn't charging billionaires more. its that you'd have to completely rewrite and redefine the economy. This can't be done with simple changes in the tax code or by altering tax rates.
Funny how in the video where you recommend the most radical societal changes, the next video in the series is no longer in "Up next" and the view count gets cut in half
I definitely understand your reasoning behind this, but coming from someone who grew up in alberta, the oilfield is what kept our family afloat.
You're not rambling. I hear you! It can feel futile at times, but we have to protest and elect moral leaders. We can do this ✊
@@ScopeofScience I hope so! Thanks :D
I’d love to see a politician with the same morals as you have ☮️💚
So I'm going to have to climb a tree to finally meet you when I'm living in Vancouver... Keeps things interesting. I'll get Autumn to give me a boost.
Thank you for your work. True role model
What are some resources to further educate myself on this? Thank you for everything you are doing!!
On this video specifically, I'd say This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein for climate stuff, and for wealth redistribution: Utopia for Realists by.... I forget, but there's a link in the video description
@@ScopeofScience thank you!
Amazing work! I'm so proud of what you do! how can i support you and the cause?
Thank you! There are links in the video description. :D
Anyone know who to vote for in the U.K. for this? I’m assuming Green Party is the best bet
I live in the UK, and I'd say the Green Party is the best bet, yeah. But Chris also has some good advice. 😆
Corbyn's Labour was an amazing opportunity. But now that Labour is under Starmer, just stick with Green.

What is you opinion on nuclear power plants? I have heard some people say it is our only way to a green future and was wondering what you think.
Wind and solar are now more economical and less dangerous.
Its a good move long term but very expensive like most things that can help this climate crisis solar wind and hydro are much cheaper solutions

Germany stopping nuclear was dumb
Kurtis Baute yes
I am a physicist, and on top of the sad increase of fossil energy use, and increased electricity prices, it was also a huge blow to the scientific community. Lots of big projects that were developing new science for nuclear energy had to be closed, since the reactors weren't allowed any more 😔

I've had a few comments online, thats all so far. They are not excited about what I'm doing, and I understand that. Its a tricky situation.
Kurtis Baute a tricky situtation that is well needed. A lot of respect from me for doing this!
This man somehow summed up everything that going on in 8 min
the money stacked on its side from building to building seemed a bit random to bring up, but all your other points are pretty good
I suspect a large percentage of the oil is already being moved by rail instead of the pipeline, though I understand that rail may have a lower capacity than the pipeline.
Not watched your videos in a while i will be honest, but this caught my attention. and im following.... I won't lie! Love ya man!
During Hurricane Katrina people were told 5 days before the storm arrived to leave. They chose to stay. How are those deaths blamed on climate change?
(Talking climatechange denial, proven racism and faschism, hustle, etc.)
At this point I just hope for a minority government so that the green party finally has impact in the goverment.
TL;DR
German politics are f*ed up, but they might get better.
Love and solidarity 💚

01:03 You had a Brasilian demo.

Unfortunately, we'll have to rely on gas and oil until the alternatives become efficient and affordable.

Dear Mr Baute
I used to enjoy your scientific content, i was one of the early subscribers back when you had hundreds of views and a handful of subs.
