I can’t remember what exactly it’s called but there is a phenomenon where a phone screen will hold in fact for a long time and than completely shatter when the stress in the glass finally becomes to much.
Mr. Lonely is it thermal stress fracture? It’s prolly something similar where invisible cracks compound in the material until a tiny nudge in the wrong place causes sheer failure
I dropped my phone off a roller coaster once without a case. Not a scratch on it and it still worked even though it rained over night (we weren't allowed to retrieve it until the next day).
I love my energy company, another company wanted to build a pipeline. They had to buy the land first. My energy company, being the legends that they are, tripled the other company’s bid for the land and made it a nature reserve with MTB and hiking trails.
the amazing Kurtis! you rock! - protesting, sciencing, educating, recording, editing, and uploading, while i can barely send a text or make a phone call!
I know that this is kind of counter to what you're trying to raise awareness of, but I think you look really quite good with facial hair. To stay with your message, I will say I'm gonna join up with an Extinction Rebellion protest mid september. Looking forward to it and good luck, Kurtis!
My best guess: glass bottles, the pulley system, a bucket with wood shrapnell (essentially a smaller version of a toilet without running water). Glass bottles (compared to plastiic bottles) have the advantage of having extremely smooth surfaces and can thus be cleaned easily without residue. They have the disadvantage of being dangerous source of glass shrads if dropped. They could however be in a cloth bag to prevent that, or have a handle (like a coffee mug) to attach ropes/string to, to prevent another 'phone like' accident.
My guess would probably be a bottle for urinating? He can put a lid on it, hand the bottles down through pulley for them to be emptied etc As for defecating? I have no idea
You know there are 6 pipelines that go through the great lakes, One fifth of the world's fresh water. These are the type of people you are dealing with. The entire system is crooked.
The impact velocity of his phone wouldn't have mattered as much as the energy absorption of the ground (and the phone). In the forest the soft floor composed out of dry leafs would probably absorb most of the energy by compressing.
Haha, the first thing I thought when you said the phone was completely fine was that you should do a sponsorship with the company that made your phone case, and then you went and did it :)
Just donated to Protect the Inlet because urgency for initiatives like this is more apparent then ever. If I needed a phone case, I would get one of those from Pela, but admittedly, I already have a plastic one.
Please Note: This construction that he is blocking....is a twinning of an already existing pipeline.....which will enable much more oil to be transported. This means there will be way more Tar Sands 'Oil' produced. The bitumen tar oil is for China......who probly doesn't even want it anymore. Also, this twinning of the TMX pipeline will add many many more tankers into the Salish Sea off BC, Canada exactly where the endangered resident Orcas live.
I'm only at the very start of the video. I'm willing to bet your phone survived just fine. The youtube channel How Ridiculous dropped several smart phones out of a helicopter. Even after reaching terminal velocity, the phone's didn't hit the ground hard enough to break. Sure the screens cracked, but the phones functioned fine still. EDIT: Hah I knew it! Glad it worked out for ya, those things are sturdier than people give them credit for.
You're an inspiration Kurtis. I'll be cheering you on from Guelph Ontario and supporting you through my own efforts in Loving Action for a sustainable world.
I love that you worked out the speed of your phone plummeting into the ground! Bless their hearts for doing that too. Keep fighting the good fight Kurtis, we are rooting for you, the trees and the planet.
Yeaah ! Please keep calling for action //// make that they give up the pipeline ! You'd be a Legend, a breathing - Living - Hero protecting Life it self !!
Usually I find protestors annoying and taking things too seriously but rlly good to see a protest about something so vital to the earth, more important than any other issue
I've been using a Pela case for a year and a half now and I've also loved it! Even got one for my boyfriend for his birthday (on top of other things) and it's amazing. I think it's time for me to use the code you linked to get my sister one now. Thank you thank you thank you!
In the book The Overstory by Richard Powers, a sub-plot involves two people living in a tree for around a year to protect the redwoods and they gave themselves nature/tree names that they felt strongly about, so you should do that as well and read the book if you haven’t already.
Well, your phone didn't hit terminal velocity from that height and a light object like a phone might get slowed down by hitting some tree branches on the way down which would also help. It's light weight and the somewhat soft surface of soil would also help prevent it from getting broken (decreasing the maximum amount of impact force it experience in any second upon impact).
I know that you have covered parts of it, but I think it would be good if you did a video explaining how you are living up there, like how are you charging your phone for example? What are you eating up there? Etc?
So the acceleration of the phone is 9.81 m^2/s (which is just g) and then its speed at a given time is just the time integral of acceleration which gives v = gt. Now the position of the phone at a given time is yet again the integration of the speed, which gives us x = 1/2 * g * t², which we know is 20m. Now 20 = 1/2*g*t² gives us a falling time of t = 2.09 seconds, after which the phone would travel at a speed of g*2.09=19.81 meters per second, which is approximately 70 km/h.
2:38 “And it was completely okay” If you end with “This video was sponsored by Otterbox” or something like that, I think I might just go out and get one.
I have a super slim plastic case for my phone so it wouldn't be good for the planet if I threw a good case away in favour of a biodegradable one. Sadly there also isn't a case for my phone :( But when I need a new phone about 5 years from now (I hope) then I'll make sure that I can buy a proper case for it :)
- probably "Canada can make a lot of money here". That's hard to argue with, I'm pretty sure there is a lot of money to be made. Public projects should definitely include the environmental impact, though. The damage caused by burning all that oil would be (probably, someone run the numbers please) more expensive than the monetary gain they get from selling it. If not, they should redirect all or most of the profits to mitigation, like carbon capture research.
Hey, you should make a video about the damage that vaping can do on the environment. I've been thinking about it, and while cigarettes (I think) will eventually break down into the earth, plastic pods like in Juuls, or the disposable devices like puff bars that are literally just a one-time use battery and a metal casing. Just a thought tho.
still nothing compared to what corporations do, people pointing at what other individuals do as the issue is designed to waste our time, 100 corporations are responsible for 71% of global emissions, and there are are about 190 million corporations on earth, blaming individuals is like blaming a drop for a flood instead of the river
This does seem like a great plan, but if you were to succeed in stopping this pipeline, wouldn't the company transport the oil through other means of transportation that release a large amount of CO2 into the atmosphere, such as tanker trucks?

Thats right! They are very sensitive when spawning, and salmon is a key part of industries and culture here.
1:10 How did you get to 70 km/h?
So the acceleration of the phone is 9.81 m^2/s (which is just g) and then its speed at a given time is just the time integral of acceleration which gives v = gt.
Now the position of the phone at a given time is yet again the integration of the speed, which gives us x = 1/2 * g * t², which we know is 20m.
Now 20 = 1/2*g*t² gives us a falling time of t = 2.09 seconds, after which the phone would travel at a speed of g*2.09=19.81 meters per second, which is approximately 70 km/h.
