    PS4 "middle of the road for exclusives"? They absolutely killed it with amazing exclusive games for 2018, much more so than Nintendo IMO. Spider-Man alone would have been enough, but God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Detroit Become Human, and the Yakuza games.

    I think personally the gaming world is not ready for digital only. They would shoot themselve in the foot if they go only that route. Not to mention we use our consoles as blu ray player as well. Why plug a dedicated blu ray player when you can have your xbox or ps4 doing it and not taking an extra space.
    Now i could totally see 2 version of the console tough. One could be a cheap version without physical media support and even to an extent i could totally see Xbox do a version that support backward compatibility and one that does not. Because altough the current formula is better than nothing, it would be nice to have full hardware backward compatibility and not be limited by liscences.
    As for Sony, they got so much trash for not being B.C, i hope indeed the PS4 games are playable on the PS5.
    As for the relevance of backward compatibility i think lots of peoples miss the point. You can't compare BC to recent games. Because usually when you play a BC game, you play it from start to finish and thats it. Some RPGs are longer than regular 8 hours game but those games back then where not design to have you stay on them for hundreds of hours, exept in rare cases games like Halo 2 online. And the online part is not supported, so obviously if you look at the numbers BC look small, but its simply because we just do the games and thats it.
    For instance i played Constantine from the OG Xbox on my 360 last week. I played the game from start to finish and once i killed the final boss, thats it, i was done with the game. Took me less than 8hours. Next BC game ill do may be in a month or so, because yes i also enjoy playing new games and yes i do play many many hours on games like gears of war online. But im damn happy BC exist and is there when i want to play those games.
    I do have an OG Xbox but the disc drive is having problems, also i only have composite cables so the picture quality is not very good. BC remove all those problems and let me enjoy my games on a modern system plugged in HDMI (or in my case for my 360 component cables as i have an old model but it still look awesome/HD)
    There is OG games im litteraly waiting to see if they will be playable on X1 because there not on 360 yet and its just an hassle for me to go play them on the old xbox. But ill admit im worried...
    We just passed X018 and also the anniversary of the OG Xbox and no announcement... and the last games where in April. I really hope its not over already for the program.. There like only 32 games releases so far cmon...

    • @InputArchive
      @InputArchive 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Destro WOD Both Microsoft and Sony have dug themselves into a hole so-to-speak when it comes to BC and physical media. Both share the same goal, they want physical media to die so people buy from their stores instead; this is the future, dedicated storefronts where you have full control over all purchases with higher returns.
      However Microsoft have rooted themselves deep into backwards compatibility - a feature that heavily values physical media. People now expect the Xbox Two be backwards compatible and have physical media due to the ecosystem they've created. Sony obviously sees backwards compatibility as an unprofitable venture; but they would look extremely bad if the PS5 doesn't have backwards compatibility but Microsoft does.
      So what I see happening is that both machines will have physical media, both will be backwards compatible, but both will stick to single layer blu-ray discs for games. Why? They will not get away with digital only consoles; not yet anyway. The aim next gen will be to devalue physical media - this is already happening. Games will no doubt be bigger next gen. but the disc sizes will remain 50gb like this gen. Games will then have to rely on bigger patches meaning the data on the disc is even less valuable. I will also expect the new trend of shipping the game unfinished (Spyro, Fallout 76, Tony Hawks 5, Cod BO4) and having to download a patch to even play the game to be more common.
      This is how physical media will die.

      An attempt to make consoles all digital would just make their existence pointless, so whoever makes the first move to all digital/ streaming will just be walking right into a fire for all other companies to watch burn.
      Maybe that will create a vacuum for sega to come back.... mmmmm....

    • @mrrayner8457
      @mrrayner8457 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with your statement on backwards compatibility, it's a cool idea but as Adam says it's not overly used. In an ideal world All consoles would be 100% backwards compatible but without creating SoC versions of every single platform and insert them into the modern hardware (increasing the price of manufacture) it wouldn't work as well. While you can get Blu Ray drives that play CDs and DVDs, are there many people doing that? Essentially true backwards compatibility will increase manufacture pricing, which as we see isn't something hardware manufacturers want (as per the use of AMD Jaguars - a mobile APU chipset - in consoles, albeit modified versions). For example Sony would have to recreate the way the custom systems (PS1-PS3) work on a single chip as it appears that they have moved away from fully custom architecture. The alternative then becomes emulation, which although solid can also be inaccurate and would require extra development time because let's be fair they're not going to steal RPCS3 and use that on the PS5 based on its current state. I think the best option is emulation IF they can get it working consistently, and then have a subscription built into PSPlus/XBL Gold that allows you access to every game they have or can acquire the licences to for legitimately to run on the system (and no, I won't get into how preposterous it is to have to play to play games online, different conversation for another time).
      I personally love backwards compatibility, especially since moving to PC (I was predominantly a console gamer from the age of 5 to 32). Sometimes it takes a little tinkering, but having a large library of 20+ year old games I missed out on at my fingertips is a great feeling. Prices are crazy low on them most of the time and I don't have that resentment of paying for them as I don't already own the discs anyway. less than 10 euro in the Steam winter sale got me both Half Life games (and all expansions) and both Portal games. GOG have a massive library too, and when I signed up I got 10 free games on my account as well (that was 2013 in fairness). Also, with the games purchased on GOG from the early to mid 90s they auto boot DOSBox (a DOS emulator) for the best experience a modern system can offer.
      I semi agree with your "the gaming world isn't ready for all digital media". I agree that CONSOLES aren't ready for it, the PC is predominantly digital now and although you can buy physical games it's cheaper and more convenient to buy digitally. The difference between the two is entirely down to marketplaces available. With PC there's many services and marketplaces used (Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle, Origin, Battle.net, UPlay, Bethesda have one, Rockstar Club, Epic have theirs) as well as 3rd party key sellers (such as cdkeys, kinguin, green man gaming and the other one I won't advertise) which gives PC gamers the choice and creates competition. Competition spurs competitive sales and better prices for the gamers. PSN and XBL don't have competition, so prices remain high and the value of digital is lost (occasional sales not included). Why would I pay $60 for a game digitally when I can pay $60 and get a disc as well? Consoles don't have an infrastructure to encourage competition in a digital sales environment, and it's a sad thing because I'm sure digital purchases would increase if the option was there.
      The main issue I have with modern physical media in games is the necessity for day 1 patches and updates (if you buy a game on launch, let alone months/years down the line). I find with digital the updates install with the game when you install them, no searching required (not sure if this happens with digital console purchases though, correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not complaining about bug fixes, day one patches or updates btw, I actually think accessing these have a benefit to the consumer, but the reality is that by purchasing on discs it's a fact that you will have to install the game then the updates before you can even start playing.
      Excluding patches, bug fixes and updates optical media simply doesn't run fast enough to play games from disc anymore, hence the mandatory installations of modern systems (welcome to PC gaming circa 1996). X1S/X moved in the right direction by including a 4K Blu Ray player but due to limitations of the first gen X1 they can't put games onto 4K BDs due to the lack of that drive. And even so, we return to disc read/write speeds being inadequate for gaming.
      I think before next gen, console manufacturers need to look at the environment they have in place. I don't think digital will be in place with the PS5/Nextbox, but that's because we live in a world where their own ecosystem doesn't allow for it. I think if next gen does go fully digital without any major change to the marketplace we will see a large majority of core gamers either give up (as Adam has said many times) or jump ship to PC due to the advantages that the platform has over conventional consoles with their current ecosystems in place.

    • @VicariousReality
      @VicariousReality 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You seem to misunderstand the nature of older, better games.
      First off, there were plenty of RPGs that would last players hundreds of hours on end, with such franchises as the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games coming to mind. The difference with them is that they're more likely to be turn-based, whereas modern RPGs will have normal, real-time, action-based gameplay.
      Second, the amount of games prior to the 7th gen that had online support were few and far between; it'd be a miracle if even 500 games out of the PS2's 3870 game library had online modes.
      Finally, your choice of naturally rushed movie-to-game adaptations do not represent the majority of pre-7th gen games. There were plenty of games that offered lots of substantial post-main-game content right on the disc that lasted hours on end, with one key example being DMC 3's Bloody Palace mode.
      Simply put, there are plenty of substantial older titles that would still be enjoyable in this day and age, and considering that nostalgia has never been stronger, people would enjoy what the pre-7th gen titles offered in spades, such as console games with normal multiplayer modes (Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath, The Red Star, etc).

    • @VicariousReality
      @VicariousReality 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mr Know Nothing That's not a new trend. Shipped unfinished games have existed since the 7th generation (PS3, 360, Wii) due to online connectivity being the standard allowing for lazy development and publishing habits to not only exist, but both persist and thrive.
      Should physical media be culled, it's very likely that another hardware manufacturer will step up to fill the hole in the market. Perhaps then it will be nVidia's time to shine.

    With the physical design of blueray discs it would be very easy to do a "new" format with massively added capacity without much in the sense of new tech. Simply use the now available 4K capacity and make them double sided for the, most likely even next gen, very few titles that actually need it. Over 200GB data, on one disc.
    That way both sides can be play the game sides should they be inserted install side down after this having already been done.

    If ps5 backward compatible, no reason for remake, or, sony will release remaster as dlc for physical player and digital player. And new games will be exclusive on ps5, if sony follow the right foodtrack, ps5 will be huge hit, far beyond ps4. Why? Ps will realize console succes comes from quantity, variety and quality of first party games. Extra cash sony get from ps4, sony will hire tons of second party reputable company to make aaa+ exclusive, my guess around 10-20 for 5 year span (2022-2027), and 15s first party studio. I definitly buy ps5 in 2nd/early 3rd year along with 10 used games. Just like switch in next year and ps4 in 2016

    With backwards compatability, the only one I can see with the least cost would be the PS1. They can already play Ps1 roms on hardware with the PS Vita, so hardware for a nextgen console should not be an issue.
    To go to the concept of nostalgia generation, PS Classic is “Remember those old popular games? You can play them with this!”, and PS5 could be a great opportunity for “Remember that one PS1 game that you think is good but not that popular? Well you can play it with PS5!”

Then months later I noticed my trophy list didn’t update to the last game I played. Vita is working as usual. Killzone 2 did something to my account. I call in to Sony and they said that the trophies are tied to the account. I made a test account not tied to an email and all of a sudden it installs the trophy on the test account and updates the last game played.

    I should note that you kind of skipped Sony's third party exclusives, you brought up SEGA, but really didn't talk much outside of that, and PS4 THIRD PARTY exclusives are at the moment more in supply than Switch, though I guarantee that, in terms of NOTABLE exclusives, Switch is going to speed up greatly and overtake Sony on the third party exclusives (certainly not third parties in general, sadly) front just due to its more unique spec. But this year Sony still had Ni No Kuni II, which yes was on PC, but really a majority of JRPG players still got that on PS4, Yakuza games, the PS4 Taiko no Tatsujin which is very different from the Switch version, the Fist of the North Star Yakuza game, Secret of Mana, though it did kind of suck, PSVR exclusives, Judge Eyes, and a few Japanese exclusive SEGA games, just on the top off my head. (Switch for comparison had Octopath, TWEWY Final Remix, Billion Road only in Japan, Katamari Reroll (which will be a 10/10), Taiko no Tatsujin Switch Version, and a few other less notable Japan only Bandai Namco games.)

And Nintendo made very very very significant profit in the 80s which they still live off of today, so they can afford to screw up especially if the hardware is cheap to produce for each iteration. Very very smart!

    The funny thing about the switch is that basically the only AAA game that was solely developed for it by Nintendo in house studios, was and still is Super Mario Odyssey.
    Literally everything else is Wii U ports and third party multiplatforms. There is also Mario+Rabbits but that was developed by Ubisoft. Xbox One had and still has nothing, except the Sea of Thieves and latest Forza. Sony Worldwide Studios on the other hand, steadily brings AAA titles on a yearly basis, and this is highly impressive, considering that their games are unique and original IP's(even God Of War can be classified as a complete reimagining).
    And another thing to mention is that all of their AAA titles are built almost from the ground up, using in house proprietary game engines, and every title is painstakingly tinkered to work with the PS4 hardware at the most fundamental level (like they use a lot of low level assembly stuff, which is nothing to sneeze at), milking every last juice out of the system, to bring the most amazing graphical fidelity and overall quality working flawlessly on 2012 mid-tier PC specs.
    And this is what SCE should be praised for, they have pretty much The best programmers and artists, give them years of time, huge budgets and freedom to create a true works of art for all of us to enjoy.
    In this landscape of AAA publishers ordering game developers to solely grunt at yet another CoD, Assassin's Creed or Battlefield, using the same assets, and with corporate suits choking artistic freedom, it's great to have a publisher to give us AAA blockbusters in all of their creative glory.

    You Know Adam. I'm starting to see backwards compatibility as more than just a cool bonus feature for a console. It's actually a MUST.
    Just like theatrical film negatives being preserved. We have to understand that there is gonna come a time when old systems. Such as maybe the PS1 and PS2. Start to have more hardware issues. and don't forget the 1st and 2nd Generation PS3s that play PS2 Games as well. Are arguably the best way to play PS2 games on an HD Television natively. But sadly. They'll begin to decline overtime.
    If PS5 were to actually play just PS1, PS2, and PS4 titles. (BTW, I'm okay with them skipping PS3 since most of the big titles from that generation have been successfully remastered for the PS4)
    It would be a great replacement for those YLOD-Infected PS3s that could soon die for good one day. And when those are gone or become too expensive to purchase off Ebay. We won't have many good options to play these games. For example, you want to play the first 4 Silent Hill games but don't have the hardware to play them? well. Your out of luck.
    But Sony themselves should also keep in mind. Making some of these great games into Digital Titles on the PS Store would also be a good alternative if finding physical copies in the wild is also too difficult. So let's keep that in mind.

    PlayStation tends to ultimately dominate each generation.
    The PS5 I doubt will be doing all digital anytime soon.
    I am pretty sure that PS5 will go with BluRay XL format.
    In the US and PAL regions, I think it would be plausible for a digital only version that comes without a disc drive but instead offers like a 4TB SSD or HDD, and also a version that comes with the disc drive.
    Maybe the PS5 will have double internal storage slots.
    I've heard the PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4 game discs, but not for PS1, PS2, or PS3.

    Frankly, I think digital only is stupid, not just for the whole collector's aspect of owning a physical copy, but digital copies are linked to your account on their network, which means that these corporations could shut down your account and you'd lose all access to the games, or they could just remove games from your account for no reason, I think physical copies give corporations less power over what people can do with these systems. Also you can't trade or borrow digital copies with/from a friend, and most people don't have internet capable of downloading a 100-200 GB game in less than a few hours, not to mention the local storage you need to store the games. All in all digital is just a bad idea, even if we had really fast Internet, physical copies protect consumer rights, and digital copies relinquish them.

    If you talk about 300 GB discs and games that large, you also have to talk about what it would be like without those discs.
    For many people a 300 GB download is a matter of days or even weeks. While I think there will be progress until 2020 that problem will continue to exist for a long time.

    im not fan of the ps4.. but playing death stranding on the old one ps4 ..was sick!
    games are too casual these days..horrible generation!

    Fun fact the PlayStation 4 is projected to hit a hundred million before the end of this year. So it will surpass the PS1 which is currently at 105 million units sold.
    Ps. Last time I checked PS3 sold 86 million units. 👌

      From what I've read MS will still be making Xbone S' with a disc drive at least. If this is true it leads credence to the rumors of Project Scarlet being two devices one physical/digital like current consoles and the other pure digital.

    For the first time since og Xbox I'm considering going Xbox next gen, at least as long as Sony plans on keeping their censorship policy for Japanese developed games
