The reason the generation still feels new and 6 years sounds unbelievable is because technological leaps have become smaller and PC gaming has grown to the point that you don't see as many games exclusive to the consoles as they used to have by the end of their lifespan.
Can’t believe it’s been 6 years already. I haven’t really played this gen of gaming. Ever since ps3 I’ve been all about the handhelds so hopefully I can catch up on it once my baby gets older
Unless the PS5 is 100% backward compatible with older models, this will be where I stop. Since I already have it, I won’t need to feel nostalgia. It’ll just be part of my rotating library, and I’m okay with that.
I remember when I bought my white ps4 at gamestop that came with destiny in 2014 and played the hell out of it and bought over 50+ games since then that are really good especially the exclusives
As always great video. Always very insightful. It's hard to believe how far we've come from a technological standpoint. ( I'm speaking as an old school gamer) been gaming since Atari 2600.
Doesn't feel like 6 years for me because I didn't get my PS4 until 2016. Still, it's the most fun I've had gaming and collecting since the PS2 so I can't complain. Great video, Adam!
Yeah, you're pretty on the money. We're in the last real year of relevance for PS4. Aside from Death Stranding which just came out, and Last of Us II and Ghost of Tsushima, maybe a new Ratchet or something smaller?, we've seen Sony's full first party line up come out. They're in full PS5 mode. When Cyberpunk and those first party titles are out we'll have nothing of not really. It's bittersweet, but since Sony's been focusing on PS5 development since at least early 2017 (according to Colin moriarty) they'll possibly have a decent launch line up. Guerilla's been working on something, maybe Horizon 2? A new Ratchet again is entirely possible as a launch title and Sony's San Diego team has been working on a rumored Uncharted game. There are a few corrections I have to make- A- PS5 will use a 4k blu-ray drive, per Jim Ryan, and it will be fully backwards compatible *at least* with all PS4 games. That's why they haven't come out with a PS4 pro revision. There's no reason to buy a Pro when PS5 is this close and you can play those games even better. B- Sony focused more on first-party acquisitions this year. They finally bought Insomniac (Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, the recent Spider-Man game) and they're rumored to be interested in Remedy. They're likely working to bolster their line up. Insomniac has two studios- one in LA and the other in North Carolina that does Ratchet games and VR stuff, so they could easily make a few first party games at a time. I'm most curious to see if that rumored full backwards compatibility with PS1-PS3 games is true. Sony of course has several patents for software emulation and I think you've discussed them before. Some journalists and insiders have stated that they've heard PS5 will let you play "many of your older games" and that the logline is it is "about the past as much as the future." PS1/PS2 stuff would be easy to emulate, but the main point of contention is PS3 stuff. Sony right now uses old Cell server racks to stream PS3 games on PSNow- and Cell isn't being manufactured right now. I believe for that reason alone they'll incorporate PS3 emulation on PS5. A standard PC server rack would be far more convenient than using old Cell racks. Basically I think it's possible that rumor's true. Plus 2020 will be 25 years of Playstation- how great would that be of a marketing push to go- "It's been 25 years of the Playstation brand, so you can play 25 years of history on the PS5??"
It makes sense to release consoles less often today than a couple of decades ago. Processing power still moves at an incredible pace but the returns on that power diminish as we move to ever more fidelity in game engines - at least when it comes to traditional 2D displays.
Unfortunately, there will be no “future collectors” of the PS4 & Xbox One. Why? These consoles represent the first of the “rental terminals” and the only games that will be playable on these systems after they’ve been sunset will be hacked, cracked, & pirated. The Xbox 360, PS3 & Wii U are the last of the self-contained software consoles (before the industry went SaaS). It’s kind of sad to live to see how an era ends.
SaaS? I disagree. I have a substantial PS4 collection that is still growing. I don’t understand why you think there will be no future collectors so long as the hardware exists to play them on.
Tim Walden SaaS = Software as a Service. You can have all the hardware you want, if the servers hosting the software are no more, so is your collection.
The Switch is also a new handheld generation, which is where it fits best in both timing and technology. It just doesn't have a handheld competitor, and the time of separating handhelds and consoles has pretty much passed at this point. It also wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo doesn't release a new platform but instead iterates on Switch hardware every few years, much like if Sony had named the PS4 just Playstation, and continued to launch new 'pro' models every 3 or 4 years.
Adam, I remember when you started console generation reviews. Its the 6th year of the PS4!? I'm feeling super old now! The Switch is about to turn 3! Time flys, man!
Yup, this gen has gone soooo fast. The fastest a game generation seems to have gone but it wasn’t. Last gen just felt like such a drag and I remember been burnt out with seeing the PS3, 360 and Wii all the time. I remember Sony mocking Microsoft and breaking the internet at E3 2013 like it was yesterday. What a legendary moment that was, I don’t think anything like that will happen again. Especially since E3 is going in a direction that screams cringe. Now we’re 6 years in, there’s been 100 million PS4’s sold, and it has some of the best games I’ve ever played. I’m 100% ready for next gen now.
When I was in high school, Xbox 360 was all the rage, and we were nearing the end of the console generation. I was getting into PC builds and got my friends into it, and I skipped most of this generation. This year, I got a broken PS4 and got it repaired. I split the cost with a close family member, and we have been sharing it. HE's had it most of the time we've had it, I played through Uncharted 1 and The Last of Us and he's had it ever since. I could get it whenever, but adulting and stuff has been keeping both of us from gaming most of the time, but if I'm gonna just fire up a game for a bit generally it's gonna be on my rig. All that to say, this generation didn't really do anything for me. I kept to CS:GO, and I'm really hyped for Halo Reach on Steam in a couple weeks. I think I've got a decent group that will play with me. Buuutt.... The Last of Us Part 2. Yeah that's gonna be a big deal for me next year.
Daniel McMurray Because you just stuck to pc you missed so many good games. GOW , Detroit , Horizon , Spider-Man , Uncharted , LOU , Days Gone , Death Stranding , Ghosts
My 22nd birthday is on 11/20/20, so as a fan of both (Launch Day PS4 + PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio X1X), I’d be stoked to see either of them release that day!
I think the major development for the PS4 over the last year has to be in PlayStation Now, which wasn't mentioned at all, understandable given Adam's personal views on digitally downloaded games, but like it or not that is definitely the future for all gamers and indeed the present for many gamers, I for one have never put a game disc in my Xbox One, because Game Pass Ultimate!
Funny how your doing a PS4 relevance video. I just used this as my topic for my public speaking class just last Friday at my college. It's so hard to keep time when talking about why you should still buy PS4 in 2019. I went way over my time limits in my speech because there are just so many talking points for why PS4 is so great!
Crazy it's already been 6 years! Didn't think we'd ever see another 100m selling console in 2019. Also can't wait to see the final total sales of the ps4
Thats the difference between the mighty playstation brand against xbox. Playstation sells hundred millions while on xbox, theyll be lucky enough to sell 50 million units. That is the norm since the ps1.
My last console was the XBOX 360, got it on release week in the UK. I slowly stopped playing after some years and moved over to PC... I've not owned a console since which it a little bit disheartening to me because I was traditionally a console kid. I just find it easier and more flexible to have a gaming laptop and PC where they function as more than just a gaming platform. Can't believe it's been so long already, I remember working my first christmas job in an electrical store and seeing the 360 and PS3 competing in the store.
The next generation of consoles will be interesting. I will say that in my transition from PS3 to PS4, I was the least excited about the upgrade. I own the original 60GB fully backwards compatible PS3 with SD, CF and memory stick slots. The XMB was fast, it was efficient, and though software was slow to run, (especially the PS Store), it was still a nice full package. I bought the PS4 at launch, and initially, I was underwhelmed. I expected it of course, because a new console needs time to pick up steam. But recently I turned on my PS3, and I still felt like, "Man....this is still so good." I turned it on because I had a video file that I put on SD card and just ran smoothly on my PS3, where as the interface to run a video file on PS4 with its media player is not as nice, in my opinion. Oh well. Now I"m just rambling! Cheers Adam!
6 years! god! I remember getting my ps4 on the European midnight release, booting it up and seeing that Hd! I'll never forget that moment. This generation went by so fast like omg haha! I remember watching vids on youtube about the release etc..
Awesome video Adam. I think it’s crazy that the Wii is still alive. You should do a birthday for that. After all it is still getting new games. Some would even call it the Dreamcast 2... 🤔 🤣 Na no one is calling it that.
Man times fly.... This is a 7 year long generation console like the last one. This is happening because the CPU power becoming harder to increase over time. You can see Intel and AMD PCs processors in the last years . Is becoming very expensive and harder to make CPU with smaller nanometers. But I think in the next decade or so Google quantum computer will come, become a councious AI and destroy the world. And the consoles either.
Actually the launch PS4 lasted too 2016 3 years the Pro witch is an upgrade has lasted 3 years now so really it hasn’t been 7 years well kinda if you got the slim
It's crazy how fast the PS4's time went over but honestly, I'm really glad it's over. This statement alone sounds fanboyish but for my personal taste, the PS4 just like the PS2 offered too little during its releavant life time that would convince me to pick one up. The PS1 and PS3 were the exact opposite of this as I found many games that really interested me. The PS4 was introduced with 8bit indie titles, remastered PS3 ports and mostly open world titles. The situation changed of course but my initial impression left a bad taste. Thus I am happy we get to the PS5 soon, next to PSNow getting more and more PS4 titles. My hope is the PS5 makes me wanna pick one up and play the shit out of it, just like the PS3 did years ago.
Hey Adam always appreciate your videos. In your main videos your always in the room with your genesis games in the background. Any chance you'd do a video showing your other collections displayed on did I miss those ones. Always happy for your great knowledge on the consoles histories.

17:42 "enjoy the last full year of the 8th gen of consoles..." and here I am with a component CRT playing PS1 and 2 hah. I have about a dozen Ps4 games, I'll get around to them eventually. But yeah I think the Ps4 has had a great run so far
There's absolutely no need of new hardware right now or in the next few years when games like Death Stranding, RDR 2, Last of Us 2 are coming out with very realistic graphics and good performance. I couldn't say that for the previous generation when it was clear in 2012 we've reached the point when console games were lagging hard behind PC. It all comes down to making more money so it's more profitable to sell a new console for them
Damn it has been 6 years already. I bought one earlier this year in Hong Kong. I still remember like it was yesterday when Xbox one was launched disastrously and Sony was taking shots at Microsoft.
4:52 I don't know about the Sony of Japan being so much in control of Sony of America. The headquarters for Sony Interactive Entertainment moved from Japan to California a few years ago. After that ALL SUBMISSION for the PS4 have to be in English even for Japanese companies, that is something that came out in the news that pissed off a lot of devs. The other thing is the censorship that PS4 games have started to push like how DM5 censors some of the female characters while the Switch and Xbox One version do not (google the comparison pictures). Then some Japanese games like Senran Kagura got censored or had to change things that have always been there in past games and people attribute this to the Sony California people calling the shots because they are more sensitive to these things. I play on PC so I do not care but I prefer when Japanese are in total control and not some California people.
You convinced me to buy a wii u all them years ago and i dont regret it. I got my ps4 in early 2017 of a guy i knew who wanted to go for pints and paid 80 bucks for it... To this day its the best pick up i ever had...... Highlights so far doom wolfenstien 1 and 2, ff15 persona 5, god of war, overwatch last of us Remastered... I couldn't get into horizon zero dawn as i tried to play it after breath of the wild abd xenoblade 2 but am going to try it again with the ps5
The PS4 had been nothing short of amazing, it had sold 100 million units for a reason since Uncharted 4 nearly every exclusive game has been solid and many have been amazing from Horizon Zero Dawn to God of War it's controller is amazing the UI is simple and effective The PS4 is my 2nd favorite console of all time behind the PS2 and it gave me PS2 vibes regularly I'm already planning on getting PS5 either day one or shortly after especially since they have said backwards compatibility is coming can't wait to see what 2020 hardware can do for gaming games already looks great I think frame rate, lighting and draw distance will be the biggest upgrades next generation In the it's exciting and unreal that 6 years has flown by so fast and we still have one more year to wait but with the PS4's killer lineup I think I'll be fine
What can I say about this? Well, let’s start from the beginning, when I was 8 and we first got the PS4 after waiting for FedEx to stop delaying our package. We all loved it because it was this new exciting system to replace the good old Xbox 360 S that was in our living room. Nowadays, the Switch has taken over that spot since Christmas of 2018, with the Playstation still seeing some use. With the launch of the new consoles and the promise of really long backwards compatibility (yeah right) the PS4 will probably die as the console enters the cycle of life where it suffers the fate of the casual sports game and Just Dance games until it’s eventual discontinuation. I can’t say it’s sad to see it go, but it’s served it’s purpose and it will be remembered as we enter this new generation, which was a miracle we have another chance to experience the launch of two new video game systems as the cycle starts all over again. The bottom line is, say goodbye to the Xbox One and the PS4, and say hello to the PS5 and whatever stupid name they give the new Xbox.
I own every console this generation except the PS4. The only reasons I wouldn't want one now are because I already have a lot of games to finish on my Xbox One, specifically the Backwards compatible titles. Furthermore the confirmation of Backwards Compatibility on Sony's next machine will ensure that I don't buy a PS4 since I would still be able to play those games on a system that current gen titles will release on. That being said if I were to buy a PS4 now it would have to be a least half of what it costs now since the price of the console has had a negligible price drop over the last 6 years (It costs $379.99 CAD while the launch price was $399.99).
Adam I want to say great video but you've made such great videos in the past, it seems you made a glaring omission. You said PS4 had few first party exclusives, but since owning a ps4 I feel like they couldn't keep ANY third party game exclusive longer than timed exclusive. I understand this isn't a problem only PS4 is having, but it seems noteworthy to mention going into the PS5/XScarlet next year. If the next generation mimics the current one (and I think it will) and there won't be any untimed third party exclusives on any console, it'll be interesting to see what the big 3 do to differentiate themselves.
I'll be honest, it does feel a *little soon* for the next generation... but then you look at smartphone releases and most people upgrade every 2 or 3 years and often pay more than what a console costs.
Comes with age son. Time flies.

The reason the generation still feels new and 6 years sounds unbelievable is because technological leaps have become smaller and PC gaming has grown to the point that you don't see as many games exclusive to the consoles as they used to have by the end of their lifespan.
I was 14 when the PS4 came out. I am now 20
Fell down a TH-cam hole and ended up here - none of this info is new to me, but great videos and we'll articulated! Subscribed, really great stuff!
Can’t believe it’s been 6 years already. I haven’t really played this gen of gaming. Ever since ps3 I’ve been all about the handhelds so hopefully I can catch up on it once my baby gets older
In 5-6 years we will all feel super nostalgic for this console :(
VintageWrestling Fan I will have moved on to PS6 by then
Unless the PS5 is 100% backward compatible with older models, this will be where I stop.
This was the series that introduced me to your videos adam!!! Thanks for all your content and hard work dude!
There are a few corrections I have to make-
A- PS5 will use a 4k blu-ray drive, per Jim Ryan, and it will be fully backwards compatible *at least* with all PS4 games.
Isnt 2020 26 years?
johanness guten 25 years in north america
@@gameguy_ oh yeah
This is my favorite series of yours.
I always look forward to these, big ups to you!
Can’t believe how fast 6 years have gone. Love these videos. I’m always pleasantly surprised when I see them in my inbox.
It makes sense to release consoles less often today than a couple of decades ago. Processing power still moves at an incredible pace but the returns on that power diminish as we move to ever more fidelity in game engines - at least when it comes to traditional 2D displays.
Bought a PS4 day one 2013 and have loved every minute!
Thanks for keeping this series up, Adam! Man, six years! Cheers from Brazil!
Time flies so fast!! I can't believe the PS4 has been out this long.
Been looking forward to this for a while! Finally picking up a PS4 this Black Friday.
Wrong PlayStation is staying traditional
SaaS?
It's crazy to think that we are in the final push of the 8th gen. I been watching your videos since before the PS4 was even a rumor.
Public Service Announcement: This video does, in fact, contain *some* actual information about the PS4.
I’d say less than half of it is devoted to it.
Thanks?
Just messing with you, Adam. ;)
LOVE this series Adam! Can't wait for next year with new consoles!
the reason why PS4 launch late in Japan was because of mobile gaming more popular in Japan at the time, not sure if that changed now,
Thanks Adam! Hope 105k is sitting well for you
When I was in high school, Xbox 360 was all the rage, and we were nearing the end of the console generation.
Love this time of the year cause of these videos
My 22nd birthday is on 11/20/20, so as a fan of both (Launch Day PS4 + PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio X1X), I’d be stoked to see either of them release that day!
I think the major development for the PS4 over the last year has to be in PlayStation Now, which wasn't mentioned at all, understandable given Adam's personal views on digitally downloaded games, but like it or not that is definitely the future for all gamers and indeed the present for many gamers, I for one have never put a game disc in my Xbox One, because Game Pass Ultimate!
Dude you are one of my favourite TH-camrs. Absolute quality Adam 👍
I'm looking forward to an 8th gen retrospective from you next year
Crazy it's already been 6 years!
Holly shit, its that time of the year? Nice to see your recaps.
Just Dance games: just inevitable.
Is it that time of the year again? Nice!
Why the hell do I always get new consoles very late in their lifespan?
Nikolai Antonov To buy tons of amazing games like Horizon, God of War, Spider-Man, etc for like $10 each instead of $60 each
My last console was the XBOX 360, got it on release week in the UK.
Days Gone wasnt the only major triple a exclusive the ps4 had. Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, God of War, etc. Come on man.
With in the last calendar year....those came out prior. Come on man.
@@AdamKoralik My bad, dude. Sorry.
@@phillipimran7377 No worries.
The launch day ps4 sounds like a jet engine
I won't be getting a ps5 until it's 4 years in. I have way to many PS3 and PS4 games to play that are amazing.
Always have a blast rewatching these videos it’s just a wholesome moment in a way to go and watch how people predict the next generation haha
Man I swear I got a Ps4 this year and I am playing the biggest game of catch up ever. It's been a blast.
If they price it lower it may become the most sold console in history
It literally feels like I just picked up PS4 yesterday from local store. Damn time flies... 😐
Awesome video Adam. I think it’s crazy that the Wii is still alive. You should do a birthday for that. After all it is still getting new games.
Some would even call it the Dreamcast 2... 🤔
🤣 Na no one is calling it that.
Hell, I bought my PS2 new in 2008 or 2009, and my PS4 a year ago.
Google is destroying the world already lol
hoping for those Skynet nukes!!!
Actually the launch PS4 lasted too 2016 3 years the Pro witch is an upgrade has lasted 3 years now so really it hasn’t been 7 years well kinda if you got the slim
This are my favourite videos of the Channel my god i been suscribed for years
It's crazy how fast the PS4's time went over but honestly, I'm really glad it's over.
Maybe some day.

17:42 "enjoy the last full year of the 8th gen of consoles..." and here I am with a component CRT playing PS1 and 2 hah. I have about a dozen Ps4 games, I'll get around to them eventually. But yeah I think the Ps4 has had a great run so far
I recently bought the old 13th inch CRT tv I use to have and also custom hdmi links to play my ps2/ps1 consoles which works real well
I just bought a PS4 2 weeks ago for Shenmue 3.
It all comes down to making more money so it's more profitable to sell a new console for them
Six years bloody hell I remember watching you inbox them when I was 16 😯
If a PS4 and PS4 Pro are the same gen/console that means the GameBoy/Color and 32X/Saturn were as well
You make me feel so old every time these videos roll around, lol
Damn it has been 6 years already. I bought one earlier this year in Hong Kong. I still remember like it was yesterday when Xbox one was launched disastrously and Sony was taking shots at Microsoft.
Holy shit, It's been 6 years
Fuck, time has flown bye
I've liked the PS4, I especially liked the RE2 remake. What a fucking killer game
Sony had a damn good run PS4 was amazing
Bring on PS5!!!
Unless it’s 100% backward compatible via disc, I’m not moving forward.
@@SumDumGy it looks like it will be backwards compatible for ps4
That won’t be enough for me. If I’m ever going to buy a new Sony console again, it’ll be 100% or nothing. That means the entire PlayStation line, 1-4.

I remember when it came out, and people in my high school would not stop kissing its ass even though they didn't own it yet XD
It has an ass?!
I play on PC so I do not care but I prefer when Japanese are in total control and not some California people.
this video aged both good and bad in both ways 😅
You convinced me to buy a wii u all them years ago and i dont regret it.
I got my ps4 in early 2017 of a guy i knew who wanted to go for pints and paid 80 bucks for it... To this day its the best pick up i ever had...... Highlights so far doom wolfenstien 1 and 2, ff15 persona 5, god of war, overwatch last of us Remastered... I couldn't get into horizon zero dawn as i tried to play it after breath of the wild abd xenoblade 2 but am going to try it again with the ps5
The PS4 had been nothing short of amazing, it had sold 100 million units for a reason since Uncharted 4 nearly every exclusive game has been solid and many have been amazing from Horizon Zero Dawn to God of War it's controller is amazing the UI is simple and effective
The PS4 is my 2nd favorite console of all time behind the PS2 and it gave me PS2 vibes regularly I'm already planning on getting PS5 either day one or shortly after especially since they have said backwards compatibility is coming can't wait to see what 2020 hardware can do for gaming games already looks great I think frame rate, lighting and draw distance will be the biggest upgrades next generation
In the it's exciting and unreal that 6 years has flown by so fast and we still have one more year to wait but with the PS4's killer lineup I think I'll be fine
I like these videos- looking forward to the next one :)
Six Year's?!
Damn, TBH i don't wanna upgrade now =/
For buying new consoles myself I usually wait about half a year after there released for them to iron out any bugs or hardware flaws if any
I was in 4th Grade when the PS4 came out now I'm in 10th time really flies
