    The Wii U is perhaps the most mishandled console in terms of development and marketing in recent history... like, as far back as the mid 90s.

      Yeah, probably true.

      Drew Sebastino Yeah, probably. Just the name of the device and everything. It's a cool machine but they butchered everything they could.

      Don't ignore the massive success of the Saturn in Japan. The Wii U, as much as I love it, flopped everywhere.

    Wii U will become the go to console for parents on a budget wanting their kids to have access to three generations of Nintendo IP natively via HDMI (Gamecube, Wii, Wii U), together with off TV play and emulation. The hackability and hardware compatibility with Wii (and Gamecube) will be its best legacy. I just bought one for those reasons and since I'm of an age where nephews, nieces, godsons and eventually sons and daughters come into my life and I want them to be able to play good, kid friendly, colorful games. Those aren't necessarily only done by Nintendo, but they have some of the best. And the Wii U allows me to have access to a lot of stuff in a small package and be able to send it to any monitor via HDMI and also game with the gamepad without a TV. It's a godsend for that.

    I just picked up an 8G Wii U this year. I figured that this would be the hardest version to come across in the future. I love the White gamepad! Also always on the lookout for a white Wii U Pro Controller!

    If they named it Super Nintendo 2, it would have sold like crazy. I'm sorry, the Wii U hit the market when people stopped caring about the Wii and its gimmick of motion controls. Naming it Wii U was a huge mistake.

    • @DraggadonsDen
      @DraggadonsDen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      George Moore .I think Super Nintendo 2 is a dumb name for that console. But it probably would have sold better by being called Wii 2.

      The system name isn't the only thing that killed it...it was the terrible marketing. Even some gamers didn't know the Wii U was a new console. Lots of people thought it was just a game-pad for the Wii. My dad, who is not a gamer, thought this and so did my brother who is a gamer. The Wii couldn't compete with PS3 and Xbox 360 (graphics wise) so it didn't make sense for someone to even pay attention to the Wii U when the PS4 and Xbox One were coming out when they thought it was nothing more than a game pad add-on for the Wii.

    • @Ben-do1bf
      @Ben-do1bf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There are a lot of reasons it failed than just that. A lot of reasons. It was expensive, poorly marketed, had no system sellers at launch, had a bunch of droughts for games, barely any third party support, looked bad (that can be a factor in purchasing a system) especially the gamepad, was underpowered (this wasn't that huge of an issue, power is never the reason a console succeeds). Very good system, a lot of amazing games (Pikmin 3 and Xenoblade X wink wink), but had a lot of issues. (Note, I actually like the gamepad... but yeah, its pretty ugly)

      DvdXploitr It's not just them. I learned next to nothing at all of the console prior to its release. No one in my family, despite being Wii owners, could tell me what the Wii U was when I first heard about it. Then, when I finally did some research, no one showed interest in the console.
      Nintendo consoles were all we talked about growing up, and this continued right into the Wii. How did they let this happen? Who did they have to fire for this?

    • @nikoskabbadias
      @nikoskabbadias 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think THE most underrated console of all time.
      Saturn and Dreamcast may not have sold great, but people were not talking shit about them. They were actually appreciated , its just that people preffered a PS 1 and PS 2 because they were so fucking awesome. Not that they didnt like Saturn and Dreamcast, just Playstation was a better deal.
      Whereas Wii U is ignored by customers and talked shit about by critics.
      I bought recently and I was VERY sceptical about it, I was kind of prepared to give it back, and as soon as I started playing it I was like
      holy fuck these games actually run smooth as fuck and have beautiful graphics.

    • @joeyreidelbach5509
      @joeyreidelbach5509 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually Saturn was a decent console despite being hard to program due to have 2 CPU's which the second one was added at the last minute to make more powerful then the Sony's PS1 cause SOJ was scare of Sony consoles and Dreamcast was a good console but the problem is that Sega of Japan and Sega of America were argueing back and forth cause SOA was focusing on the North America market where SOJ was focusing on the japanese market at the time Arcade gameing was a big thing in japan so SOJ was focusing on arcade games as SOA was focusing on home gameing cause players in NA wanted to see what can home consoles bring to the tv screen besides arcade games.

      doubtful. They do ports the first year to fill in big gaps in releases- what they should have done in 2013 with Wii U, but development on Switch games has been going on for quite some time, meaning you're more likely to see original games, and less likely to see ports. They use ports to sell systems, that's why only the highest selling (or assumed they'll sell high) got ported. Things like Tetris DX for Game Boy Color, or Link's Awakening DX, or Twilight Princess for Wii, etc.

    Hey Adam. Big fan. Been watching for years.
    I got the Switch a few weeks ago and really love it, but something dawned on me about the Wii U.
    I think the Wii U's legacy WAS the Switch. The Switch is basically what the Wii U tried to do but better. The only real thing that the Switch doesn't do that it did was dual-screen gameplay (Wind Waker HD's inventory screen or games like Captain Toad)
    I still love mine a lot, and right now it's pretty much been abandoned by most gamers in favor of Switch but I think people will really get into it down the line and realize just how much it inspired the Switch and how great it is.
    As for how Nintendo abandoned it, I'm a little bitter about it but I understand. Around late 2015 or so there started to be a huge drought and that was probably because Nintendo started moving most of their games to the Switch (like BOTW, I'd also speculate Mario Odyssey was too, Retro's game was confirmed as well) to give the Switch a good first year.
    And yeah, the Switch has had a FANTASTIC first year in terms of software but people don't seem to realize that the majority of it was probably aborted Wii U projects, which kinda killed the last year or so of relevance for it.
    Great vid as always.

      Specifically about Wii U modding I've heard you can play Gamecube ISOS on it (it uses the same PowerPC hardware as Wii, which itself was a better Gamecube) so I think it will become valuable partly for modding and whatever games don't get ported to it.
      Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, Captain Toad, Wind Waker HD are games that are dependent on the gamepad that probably won't come out on Switch.
      Right now even though I have a Switch I mostly use my Wii U for those games and original Wii compatibility.

      Switch is the product of this back in 2013: www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-01-16-nintendo-plans-to-merge-handheld-and-console-teams-in-historic-shake-up

    I remember going into my local GAME and attempting to pre-order Darksiders: Warmastered Edition for Wii U, the guy behind the counter looked at me like I was an idiot and told me that it wasn't a thing without even checking so I ended up going to another shop and getting it for only £13 (new), and it's a pretty damn good port of a decent game too.

    I bought the WiiU at launch, and still continue to play it. It's really the greatest console that Nintendo put out in the past 20 years (jury is still out on the Switch). You have a solid first party library (Zelda BOTW, Super Mario 3D World, etc), some semi-hidden third party gems (Bayonetta2, Shantae, etc) plus great Virtual Console library including games never released in North America (Earthbound NES). Oh and did I mention you can play all the back catalog of the Wii on this system? A lot of people slept on this console, and Adam hit it right on the head: in 5-10 years from now, the WiiU will be a great collector's item, because it has a small, yet very solid library of great games.

    I never got a WiiU. Neither the concept nor the games made me WANT a WiiU. Game like Pikmin 3 and Bayonetta 2 were more "I'll get that when I have the system" games, but no system sellers.
    The Switch on the other hand, man I'm loving it! Worth it for the concept alone.
    Oh and Dragon Quest 10 has been on the WiiU since launch. It's probably just another add-on. There were a few of them on the WiiU.

    The Wii U is actually a really neat system. I've had mine for about a year now & actually really like it. It's like the Dreamcast in a lot of ways, with the best ports from the last generation & a lot of good exclusives. AND it plays Wii games, so yea. It's pretty awesome.

  • @LonnyHimself
    @LonnyHimself 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    For some reason, I kinda think that Nintendo could bring the Wii U back and it would probably sell better than it it did before, they could probably port most of the best games on the switch like Tears of the kingdom, Fire emblem three houses, Splatoon 2 and 3, Bayonetta 3, Astral chain, Daemon x machina, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario rabbids, and many others, but that could be just my guess, and speaking of the switch, we should finally be getting Metroid prime 4 sometime next year

  • @cheezburgerforcats
    @cheezburgerforcats 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Xenoblade Chronicles X is an incredible game that's worth getting a Wii U alone for. Games like Bayonetta 2, Game and Wario, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Smash, and Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water really helped build the Wii U out into an overlooked gem of a console.
    That being said, the Switch is getting more good exclusives this year alone than most consoles get in a lifetime, and probably any console has had in their first year. Easily my favorite console since the GC.

    Ah, the Wii U, the console that could've done so much more if developers and Nintendo pushed it more. Had a lot of great games that never saw light until they got ported over to the Nintendo Switch. Missed opportunities as well, instead of Animal Crossing: Welcome to amiibo on Wii U, we received it as an update on the 3DS and got a board game that consisted to nothing known as amiibo Festival. But, we had some good gems in Pikmin 3, Mario Maker, Splatoon and many more. I'm still building my Wii U collection. Switch kinda comes first right now. However, was a good time in the Wii U era.

    So I picked up a Wii u last week, figured I could mod it, pick up a few imports since I heard the library was actually really good. Anyway, decided to go to a store to get an external sd card reader to help the modding process along.
    The Fred Meyer I went to (it's probably Meijer or Kroger or something on the east coast and Midwest) was able to pick up 3 sealed, new games with metacritic scores of 85+ for under 15 bucks total.
    Best part of collecting for a dead console.

    I enjoyed my wii u quite a bit. Got one in the end of 2016 for like 11 games and never got a new game for it since. But the stuff that i have for it is fantastic. Stuff like project zero, xenoblade x and tokyo mirage sessions. Although in terms of underappreciated consoles i go with full on collecting for the vita cause it still gets quite a bit of support and quality stuff.

      doubtful. That would have to mean it was in development for at least 3 years. Remember when Iwata talked about NX in 2015? That means games were being developed for it in 2015, so you think Odyssey took 3 years to develop?

    • @Atari-Dude
      @Atari-Dude 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Atari-Dude 1 So yeah it makes sense right. It was for Wii U but since that was in the tank them they moved it to the switch. I mean the switch must have taken minimum two years to develop. Probably as soon as early 2015 numbers came in on the Wii U they must have said we need to do something new.

    I just bought one two days ago so this vid is eerily timely for me. Have really enjoyed the other wii u breakdowns here.
    I got a preowned 32 gb and a couple of games, Beyonetta 2, New Mario Bros U and Warrior Orichi for around 200 euro which is significantly less than youd pay for a PS4 in Ireland. I was lucky enough that the girl in gamestop let me look at the screen though. Its thankfully all working okay. The other 8gb one was nicked up pretty bad though. So if you get one pre-owned be sure to get a look at it first if possible.
    Ive always loved this console but when I originally had one the games were just too expensive. Theyre all reasonable now. Windwaker is in the post.
    I dont regret picking it up at all. I think its a great time to get one.

      yeah, Nintendo gave it a full generation, it's not this horrible failure the propaganda spread about it would have you believe. Nintendo doesn't list Virtual Boy on their past financial reports- nor do they talk about it, yet right there Wii U's 13.56 million systems, and 100.85 million games. Check it out yourself, find Virtual Boy in this list of past systems and games (hint: you won't, because that is viewed as an utter failure by Nintendo)

    I actually really enjoyed my Wii U despite it not having that massive of a library. The few games I did own were all really enjoyable and I actually thought that the game-pad was a really cool controller. Having instant access to a map or in-game items was super convenient for games like The Wind Waker.
    I'm actually perfectly okay with its games getting re-released on the Switch. It will allow many people to play hidden gems that they missed out on initially. A re-release of Super Smash Bros. with all of the content from the Wii U and 3DS consolidated in to one game would be fantastic.

    Dragon Quest X already appeared on the Wii U in 2013. What you show there was actually the fourth edition, Journey of 5000 Years, since it's an online game with many expansions. It's not so different from how the final NTSC-J PS2 game is a Final Fantasy XI expansion.

    I think it would be interesting if, for the purposes of porting Wii U games that require the features on the gamepad, they make the Switch compatible with the Wii U controller. That might be easier than figuring out how to make those games work without a second screen/touch controls.
    As a bonus, that means they could bring back classic DS games as throwback ports.

    And here's my second comment, regarding the Wii U.
    I will always love the Wii U for what it was and how much fun it was when I played it with myself or with friends.
    The games in its library are really something special and I think that it's nice that Nintendo rereleased some games from the Wii U to the Switch because some games from the Wii U deserved to be played by many out there. I'm not going to list them because we all know what games made us respect the system.
    Who knows. Maybe it might become Nintendo's Dreamcast system later down the line if indie companies still want to support it. Heck, the PSvita is considered dead by many gamers out there nowadays, but there's STILL some games coming to it. (Obviously not by triple A developers, but still.)

    I wonder if there will be a stalemate when new systems hit a peak that way we won't keep having to buy new consoles every once in a while. In my fantasy world companies would re release their old consoles that come with built in games. These consoles would still be able to play old carts or CDs though. That way a company could make a game for that old console. Could you imagine if a highly advertised game said "only on N64" or "only for Genesis"...but that's just me blabbing. Great video as always :)
