I have to say I agree as well, it's all DLC this, and micro transactions that. With half finished games that get patched into a working condition maybe 2 or 3 months after release (if your lucky). Also after purchasing the PS4, I have to admit I've used the dual shock for the PS4 more on the PC than I have on the console itself, I know these things take time but, it's all a bit of a let down imho. I know this gen Sony are more game-centric focused, but come on, I would like to listen to the odd MP3 on my PS4, or maybe even watch a movie via DLNA... hell I even sometimes like to game while listening to music... but forget all that it's a games machine first and media centre will be an after thought that "may" get added at a later date, it's not 2007 anymore Sony! And they can shove this Playstation Now up their Arse!
who would of ever thought that the PS4 would still be selling faster than the PS2 in 2020! Also the fact it sold almost 1.5 billion billion games as of June 30th, 2020 while it took the PS2 12 years to sell that many games! I'm predicting the PS5 is going to be another beast of a console again in terms of sales!
I've pretty much gone retro anyways. There's so many games now I'd just like to find the time to experience what's already out there. NES, Genesis, SNES, PS1, Saturn imports(!!!) and being an RPG fan doesn't make the task any easier. I'll easily put another 100 hours into Dragon Quest 8 again just to experience it upconverted into 3D on a big screen. Sigh...if only I had more time.
Adam Hey i love your show so much i swear to God when i come back from work the first thing i do is to look for any new video the you've recently uploaded, seriously !! :D :D anyway such an awesome show !! Keep up the great work!!! Greetings from Egypt !! :D :D
I think all the 9th generation devices will be streaming/ digital. It depends on how well the steambox does. The problem is that Valve isn't exactly diving head first into the box so it may fall flat. I think there will be an anti-digital revolution at some point in the not too distant future. Maybe caused by something like a problem that causes everyone's itunes library to be lost
Some interesting points put across and good to see someone who knows a lot about gaming going through this 8th gen in a clear concise way, look forward to see what you have to say in the future. Nice beer and board gaming poster in the back aswell dude
AdamKoralik Yes have been for a long while now and its good to see that the channel and the show's have gone from strength to strength and long may it continue, look forward to seeing what you have to say about the xbox one
Im dead set on Sony winning the 8th Generation! Over 25 million PS4's have been sold, thats double the Wii U and XboxOne!! I love the Wii U but still Sony is dominating right now. Just wait til Final Fantasy 7 remake comes out, then we will see how many PS4's are sold.
+DeadOnArrival45 I'm just looking around the room wondering what video you watched. I don't hate Sony. My claim they may leave the market isn't out of "hatred", it's based on economic realities. As well as the Playstation brand is performing, the Sony corporation is in deep shit. In other words, they may have no choice but to close their doors. It's not emotion, it's math.
"they really want you to buy it" Its one of the best reasons to buy it if the company is motivated and attracts you with great games, ive not seen any yet but ill get one when they arrive cough*MGSV
It seems like the transition from hardware to service has begun with PlayStation Now. I suspect that is why they won't give us emulation software for PSone and PS2 games. They are trying to slowly move towards game streaming. I prefer gaming on local hardware over streaming but I think your right. I don't think game consoles have much of a future. It's a shame.
I really hope Sony has straightened its act out - I can't think about the PS3, PSP or Vita without cringing over all of the wasted potential. Maybe the PS4 Vita thing will really pay off. That would be great, as I'd love a reason to use my Vita more than once per month.
As much as I love my Dreamcasts, I love my PS1 and PS2 just as much and the hardware has lasted without issue. That being said, I agree with your original statement that "The PS4 will be a great console, but it has a very bleak future". Steamifying and Streamifying will become the norm.
Oh Adam. I just went through the comments and I'm just amazed. When you talk about fanboyism in your videos you sure aren't lying. My favorites are the ones were people are attacking you for implying PS1's are poorly designed and that Sony isn't doing well. Then they fly off the handle and spout false facts that aren't even related to the discussion at hand. Anyways, good video as always.
3:00 its amazing sony is now worth 90 billion now, (They peaked at August 2020 at 101 billion), Nintendo is now 73 billion. 7:12 it amazing that microsoft and sony switched places in your prediction, Xbox is becoming more of a service and Playstation 5 is more about hardware. 8:00 you were right about ps4 having a bunch of great games, one of the best systems ever! 9:00 it's funny because my ps1 lasted way longer than my 2 n64's, same with my ps2 outlasting my first gamecube. I will say i definitely don't agree with you saying Sony had no business in the game market, Nintendo started as a toy company that made it into gaming, Sony was a electronic company that makes amazing hardware while in 2020 my wii u gamepad is falling apart and my wii u keeps shutting itself off when I play Wii Games in the wii menu! do you think the PS4 will hit 150 million like the ps2 did?] now that we have nearly 7 years worth of sales data to go thru?
@@Ekinoxe the difference with that is that microsoft as a whole was never close to going out of business like sony was in 2012-2014, Sony not only stopped them selves from going out of business but grew almost 10 times as big. I will say with microsoft it's impressive how they passed the trillion dollar mark with apple taking quite a chunk of the operation system pie microsoft had a monopoly on in the 2000's!
@@member64 Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that what Sony did isn't impressive. I'm not taking away from their accomplishments. I was just saying that $1.3 trillion in 6 years is also impressive.
@@Ekinoxe I also agree, like I said in 2013 I thought Apple would remain dominant but here we are in October 2020 and Microsoft is once again the worlds most valuable company just like the 2000's!
do you think the PS5 might just be a pc expansion/ card/ module where you buy it and install it and still use their controllers and games, that way it would be upgrade able or a PLAYSTATION first pc second with slots to upgrade ? I would buy in up to 900$ if it were to last 15 years+
No, not like the Ouya. More like a Roku (little movie streaming box). Except for games. Not only would you not have physical copies, but you wouldn't even have downloaded copies. You'd just stream.
but maybe they'd by like sega back in the 16 bit days and put out a PC module/ expansion cart, 3DO did it and so did some others ! is it feasible or possible or probable ?
AdamKoralik Yes, started watching them the beginning of this past summer after you mentioned them in one of your videos! Awesome stuff. You mentioned before that you wouldn't be very enjoyable to watch on the show since you don't drink, but I think it'd be cool if they got you more involved in the show on camera, rather than behind the scenes.
Kyle's Game Room Thanks, it's probably because I never change it. Despite people wanting me to. As for the interlaced issue, that got resolved...recently.
keep up the good work. may I ask if you check my channel out and see what I need to improve on? I know when it comes to videos on camera the lighting sucks, but anything else I need to work on?
PS1&2 had a lot of great games that weren't just licensed average games. Every console has it's shovelware, especially the Wii after the first 2 years of its life, and that was a Nintendo console. Sony themselves may not have contributed much to gaming, but they picked some damn good devs who really cared back in the day and gave them the power to make great experiences.
My brother had a PS4 but rarely play it he had Watch dogs and Witcher 3 since he was moving more to PC, while I had a Wii U while the only game I ever bot for the PS4 was Dead or Alive 5 Last Round still like it but rarely played it
I don't know the history of Sony entering the video game market and what Nintendo had to do with that. Could you please suggest where I can get more info on that?
Guilty Bystander In all honesty I just grabbed the link to the first one I found. Started watching it for a bit and thought "okay this will get the point across."
Guilty Bystander You will come to find that most "Sega Guys" will blame Sony for Sega's downfall when in fact, Sega killed themselves with the constant bad decisions that they made. I had Sega products growing up. I love Sega too. But I'm not delusional and blame Sony for all of Sega's problems. Sega had a chance to team up with Sony but Sega said "What do you guys know about gaming" and laughed at them. Sony went to Nintendo and Nintendo back stabbed Sony, Sony said fuck it, we'll do it alone. "Sega Guys" will talk about how "a non gaming company game into the gaming industry" but anybody can enter an industry. If the "dedicated gaming companies" are giving the people what they want and supplying the best products then this non gaming company (Sony) would have failed and fail hard. That did not happen and today we have the best video game console ever made which is the PS4. So there is no reason to hate Sony and hold any grudges unless you are a "Sega Guy" holding a long term grudge with a hurt butt. I hope that helped you understand the history a little bit better through neutral eyes :-D
wastnTIMEwastnTIME That's a pretty horrendously inaccurate assessment. 1: Sony didn't go to Sega before they went to Nintendo. 2: Sony DID team up with Sega briefly AFTER that failed Nintendo deal. They developed games for the Sega CD as a revenge strike against Nintendo. 3: I don't blame Sony for Sega's mistakes. 4: I do on the other hand dislike what Sony did to the industry overall, which are their actions, not Sega's.
I honestly feel like cloud gaming services are where gaming is headed all together. Much more of a PC gamer myself, I would be stoked to see a Steam-like service coming from them.
I've been looking a lot at sales of the consoles recently, and Sony seem to be almost unbeatable (save for their loss to the Wii). The PS4 another 100 million marker. I've never seen the appeal of playstation but I suppose they are doing right in the gaming world. The PS5 looks to be another upscaled PS4?
the only saving grace in the ps3 has is that as of March 31st, 2019 the PS3 sold 999.4 million games: www.sie.com/en/corporate/data.html the Wii as of June 30th, 2020 only has 921.85 million games sold: www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/hard_soft/index.html
Unfortunately digital content is the future. Gaming will become a service and platforms will blur. In the future you will be able to play any game on any platform (PC/TABLET/PHONE etc.). But I dont think that future is soon though. I'm going to be really really sad if this is the last generation of consoles. But still there are so many consoles I dont even own and so many good games I havent even played. So for me the 'new console experience' doesnt end if console gaming ''dies'' after the next generation. I didnt even own a console in the sixth generation, one of the best generation in terms of quality games imo. I recently got a PS2 slim from a friend for free and I am now enjoying titles such as MGS2 (played it on PC before) and MGS3 for the first time (incredible game). And I am planning to buy the Xbox (I LOVED it when I could play it at my nephews house), the GameCube (Twin Snakes, RE remakes) and ofcourse the Dreamcast, I have yet to experience Shenmue and I want to do it on the Dreamcast, fuck PC emulators. So yeah, alooot of consoles I have yet to experience for myself (even though I played on most of them at friends/family). Will take a while before I own them because my financial situation wont let me. I recently started to get interested in collecting games and buying the older consoles and that was actually thanks to your videos man. Im so happy that I found your channel even though you are a bit of PlayStation hater, haha. Its the first console I really owned and have alot of fond memories of because of the incredible game lineup. I was born in 87 (just like you I think) and always played games at my friends/family (atari, nintendo, sega, msx etc). But I never really owned a console for myself because my parents didnt want them. I only had a Gameboy and in the mid 90's we finally got a PlayStation. I never grew up on liking a single company or brand. I loved every console back then, I couldnt wait to play at my friends house and play Zelda or Streets of Rage. So many different experiences and games, I loved that so much and still do. My friends were like that too. And here in Holland we didnt even get those console war commercials. The funny Sega commercials saying Genesis does what Nintendont or something, haha. We didnt get stuff like that. Or the Crash Bandicoot commercial where Crash trash talks outside of a Nintendo building. So the bashing of other consoles was quite alien to me. I got introduced to these console wars like in the 6th generation (because of the explosion of the internet then and forums etc) and I found it so immature. Imo championing a corporation, no matter how much of an impression they've left, is a hollow and silly endeavor. Everyone should support the games, the game industry not defend the stupid actions or mistakes of a company (Xbone DRM bullshit, PS3 E3 fake trailers etc etc). Oh wow, I did it again. Apparently I just love going off on a tangent. Haha. But yeah last thing is, thanks for the awesome vids Adam. Thanks to you I am collecting games and consoles as well. :)
To be fair the PS3 was a cracking bit of kit, they were making money from the slim onwards, Sony's troubles are not really game industry related, it is their lack of success on shifting TV's etc. The PS4 is outselling the XBone and I can see both being a success, that being said this will be a shorter generation than the last one.
i have 2 playstation ones that have worked perfectly over the past 20-15 years i think part of the reason why it gets a rep for faulty hardware is because at the time children just didn't know how to take good care of the compact disc medium such as throwing the discs around like cartridges and leaving the door open exposing the laser to dust.
The reason it has a bad reputation is because it's not well built. Sony built the the PSU too close to the laser. Over time the heat cooks the laser, which makes it weaker. The common fix is to turn the console on its side. Sony themselves factored this issue in to the design of the PS2, hence the ability to keep it up on its side.
i usually i played i upside down as the vents where on the bottom another trick was to elevate with tinker toys or place it on top of a fan base. i think it heated up because people didn't wanna buy the memory card so they leave it on to not loose game progress which was fine in the previous generation. regardless neither one of my psones messed up even 15-20 years later. i also have a sony compact disc player and crt tv which work perfectly and there even older than that.
Gilberto Prats Yes, exactly, that's my point. They can be made to work by tinkering with them. But the console shouldn't require that, that's what makes it a badly designed machine.
I somewhat agree with you about Sony making multi-media machines as apposed to dedicated games consoles and that being bad. But one good thing to come out of it was formats. UMD was intended for movies but offered way more space for games as apposed to cartridges. Games came out for the system you didn't think was physically possible at the time due to the bigger storage space of UMD's. Blu-Ray eliminated multiple discs and if the Xbox 360 used Blu-Ray size discs too, it could have eliminated problems with earlier games (GTA 4 being held back because of the 360's single 8GB DVD and not being able to install to the HDD at the time). Also Blu-Ray is deferentially the best way to experience any movie. Good video though, you brought up some good points.
Thanks, though I wasn't arguing that DVDs and Blu-Rays weren't a good advancement in technology, they were. I meant that they prioritized them over the game play, or so that was how it was presented.
You know Adam I was recently thinking about this video and your thoughts on Shenmue 3 only having only a shot on the PS4 and I have to disagree to an extent. Recently Nintendo acquired the rights to get Bayonetted 2 exclusive to the Wii U from Sega, considering how popular the first game was on Xbox 360 and PS3 it's amazing how Nintendo pulled off the sequel exclusively. With that said Nintendo is also currently in a point of desperation to acquire 3rd party games for their console. Nintendo and Sega are in very good standings and Shenmue 3 on Wii U would definitely be a killer game to sell systems. Your thoughts?
I'm very aware of the silly comparison to Bayonetta. The difference all comes down to budget. Bayonetta happened because Nintendo was willing to take a risk. But the game isn't going to move units, and also didn't cost anywhere near what Shenmue III would. Unless Bayonetta sells insanely well, don't expect anything good to come of it. For what it's worth, Bayonetta 2 already tanked hard in Japan.
After playing games since the Atari 2600, I'm kinda sand for the direction of gaming with all paying subscriptions, DLC and digital distribution bullshit. I really like to have physical copies of the games, with a quality booklet and a nice case. I think that the Wii U is the only console that still have that old school vibe, currently I use the PC as my main console. And even when I have a $2000+ PC I bought a Wii U for those exclusive games.
Sony is tanking, there bleeding money left, and right, and the PS3 cost did not help, nor has there TV business, people where not buying them, at least in America, going for cheaper better bargain brands like Vizio, and same for there PC business, with people buying ACER, Emachines, etc...
I don't think the United State's shoddy web infrastructure will support frequent downloads of, or even streaming, future 4k games everyone's going to want. Or, if not that, ISP's would start to become a limiting factor; I can only dl 250GB a month on Comcast. That becomes a very real ceiling when we're talking about games over 50GB large, which they will be very soon. I hardly have a choice when it comes to which ISP I want either and I live in an urban part of Chicago... I think (and hope) we'll be seeing consoles and physical copies of games around for awhile.
Very good rundown of the PS4's current & future prospects. You always have an astute point of view on the gaming world as a whole so that's not surprising. To me Sony still has too much of a hold in other media to ever disappear (check the value of their music publishing and film/TV rights to see that they're still quite valuable as a company and brand). Yes, they have shit the bed with their TV and mobile communications divisions and as much as I love the PS3 it was a financial blackhole...BUT, I believe Sony's survival has been bolstered by the great development and introduction of the PS4 and the large mindshare it holds in the hearts of longtime gamers. Many of us will always support Sony, to a fault. My only concern, if it can be called that, is that the digital delivery & streaming technology will only get better and make a PS5 and continued hardware/console cycles obsolete. I hate digital only and feel with PlayStation Now Sony has already shown it's hand as far as where they want to go longterm. Bottom line is I don't fear Sony going out of business, I fear Sony forgetting the goodwill and response the PS4 garnered and plow headlong into a digital only gaming business. That will suck ass...be cool AK.
And another thing, why the Sony bashing when they gave us what we wanted with the PS4? Microsoft tried to screw the gaming consumers with their initial Xbone plans. Sony from the get go did the complete opposite. Sony screwed up at first with the PS3, no one is denying that, but I think they should be applauded for their work on the PS4 so far.
It's so sad and unfair that Sony is losing so much money on hardware other than the PS4, because like it or not Sony does make some of the best TV's with great color accuracy and they also have great cameras, laptops etc. the problem is, is that they are priced too high for this economy, and other brands bring a better value!!
I highly doubt that this will be the last Playstation console (as we know it) I doubt Sony will just pullout of hardware development. considering the PS4 broke all previous sales records. I think it's far more likely they would either make the playstation independent from the rest of the company and just branch it off with SCE. Either that or they would just put all their focus into SCE. I dunno. Things like this are pointless to try and predict. All I know is that console gaming has never been bigger and I really cant see the trend die out. theres just too much money to be made. and I believe developers know this anyway. with steam machines, oculus rift and project morpheus on the horizon consoles will not be going anywhere. I also think that physical data will also be with us for many years. just look at the backlash MS got after the xb1 unveil. gamers made it quite clear that we want to be given a choice and if we dont have that choice we will invest in the competition. hence why so many 360 users switched to PS4. I think if anything is going to kill gaming its this whole fiasco of releasing unfinished games and expecting us to wait for a patch to fix it. even then they release tons of DLC before addressing the issue. oh and gearbox software...dont even get me started on that. I do however, disagree with you on your thoughts on the PS1. for all intents and purposes it was a great system with some of the best IPs on the planet. sorry, im not having a bark, each to his own. haha.
This may not be the last gen of proper hardware. I think it could be one more gen before everything become a streaming service. It's mainly due to Internet speeds worldwide. Yes I'm in the UK with 80mb download and 20mb upload. There are places few miles away from us getting a lot less. Some of my friends are only getting 3mb-10mb. It's going to take time and money from our phone line company to upgrade the lines for places that are far from the exchange.
I could see the PS4 Slims coming out, which I LOVE my PS2 Slim and usually the Slim models are usually better designed and better functioning. But Sony could just keep producing games for the PS4 even after the 10 year mark, after the next model generations gamesystems have already been released. This would make the PS4 SUPER valuable. I agree the PS4 is their last console so that is also why I stress to everyone to buy a special edition model of the ps4 because it will very likely be much much more valuable when the ps4 is officially retired or Sony goes under...
this was excellent. loved the analysis of sony's path. you're dead right about their part in the death of the dedicated video games industry.. naturally, if your only interest is gaming, you're gonna have to do it right, which means doing it for the gamers.
Blu ray. Just wow. The ps2 had a DVD player which was the super media of the future in the year 2000 and then 6 years later they go all in on a whole new format. Maybe wasn't a winner for them but it is for us because now the wii u and xbox one use those drives. And they're way cheaper now. So it's like the market needed the ps3. Really good. I'd Adam I'm enjoying this series.
You may be right about sony going to a cloud service instead of a PS5. However, I do not think that the world's internet is robust enough in most markets. They may just use their PS4 as a front end to their cloud service, allowing those with poorer internet connections to game as we do now, but also give those with great access to their cloud service which may have better hardware via an app on the PS4. Also, since they are using common components, it may be possible for them to easily update their console assembly line as hardware improves periodically. In short, I think there will have to be some hybrid solution, because unfortunately, rural and outdated internet markets are bottle-necking the execution of a completely cloud based gaming service. If the outdated and rural internet infrastructure gets up to speed, anything goes.
Adam you made some great points. But I would like to point out that any console trying to go into a Netflix like model will be suicide.Until all parts of the world have good internet infrastructure.connection without lagging and no monthly caps.I just don't see any console maker doing it.Maybe around the PS6 era(Assuming Sony is still in business). If the internet is better then it can happen. But as of now some of console sales come from areas with no internet and I don;t think any company wants to try to evade that section. Just my 2 cents.
Come on man, that's a tad overly simplistic of a statement. To claim the console was literally perfect save for the price they charged you is asinine. Especially considering how much those things cost to make. $900 per unit, and they sold them for $600. While expensive yes, it's not even close to over priced. The PS3 was plagued with issues, still is. But that doesn't mean it's not a good console. But there is no reason to blindly ignore the problems it had. Learning from mistakes and changing your behavior is how you improve, it's how Sony will improve. As a gamer, you have to want that.
AdamKoralik Like I told, I totally agree on the price issue, but I seriously can't find any flaws with the PS3. And I own it since day one ( okay after 4 years a switched to a slim model ). PS3 is a multimedia hub and is extremely user friendly. I had a 360 for a while next to my PS3, all the xbox did was collecting dust because PS3 did such an amazing job in everything.
ilcool90 You're saying this from the perspective of a customer. Not as an investor or developer who struggled with the PS3 because of it's obscenely expensive development and overly complicated architecture.
AdamKoralik I'm just thinking out loud on this one, but I think he means that if the PS3 didn't launch at the price it did (and if Sony didn't entertain the infamous "people will still buy it because it's our new console" attitude), a lot more people might've been willing to let the other issues slide, more often than not, I still find tons of gripes people have with it that the PS2 was just as guilty of, if not more so. And yet these are the same guys that herald the PS2 as the greatest system on God's green earth lol. It's not correct to say the PS3's pricing was the only problem, no, but I do think for the most part, it was the biggest tipping point concerning the general opinions of it.
i love the playstation brand i would be sad to them go. also ive had my ps1 since 2004 and it does still work. my first one was thrown against a wall HARD
With stuff like PlayStation Now, Sony is seriously pushing to become a "service". But I can still imagine a PS5 in 10 years, if only to promote the streaming service. I would think Sony will still need to control their service, even if it's a streaming device like the PS Vita TV. Hell, the Vita TV could very well be the spiritual successor to the PS4 (or PS5, or whatever the their directions is).
I do agree with everything else you said. Both companies panicked when trying to figure out how to deal with going to a generic architecture and preventing piracy.
Everyone wants the multimedia features back ( like the PS3 has ), Sony still didn't brought those back, and I am not buying the console until that is fixed.
the xperia z and the new 4k tvs are really nice. i also seen a sound bar i really liked. part of the reason why its failing is because there is a heavy tax leans on electronics specifically from japan which hurts its competitive price point against other manufacturers. another reason there business is failing hard is vaio use to be be major source of income and people aren't buying pcs anymore.
Personally I like what Sony is trying to do with PlayStation Now, Vita and it's Cross-Play functionality. Although the general public for the most part has little or no interest in _expanding_ their gaming experience. What they could do is a subsidy. That way you can move more units at a cheaper out the door cost. We American's love our subsidies. I fear that the lack of hardware innovation, micro-transactions, failing consumer confidence, and over saturation is leading to the next video game crash. It all started on a dark stormy night when Bethesda (a small innocent wide-eyed curious developer) unintentionally let the horse out of the bag with Horse Armor. Once Pandora's box was opened it gave companies all kinds of ideas. One such idea fundamentally killed cheat codes. Adam, just dip your toe into the Steam/GOG/Humble Bundle-PC world. The water is warm, and very cheap. Heck, I will gift you a game or two. (^_^) - Tiny Barbarian DX is amazing! The soundtrack? Even Better!
Not a problem. Thanks Adam for the videos. Sorry but I really can't recommend the TBDX soundtrack enough it's very good: (If you're interested) jeffball.bandcamp.com/album/tiny-barbarian-dx-the-serpent-lord-ost *Haters* *Gonna* *Hate* and *Maverick* are definitely the stand out tracks.
I think everything you said is right. Apart from the no ps5 thing. This is the TH-cam video about this topic that has the least bullshit its all %100 legit. THANKYOU. THANKYOU lol I really needed to hear what you said considering I have a ps4. And at the moment not sure where they mite be going with it. I've already got 90% of the games. And it isn't bad, you know if you get a ps4 the lack of games are really compensated for how many you can have at once.
Hell yeah! But I have a feeling that playstation has too much responsibility than to just make a pile of crap because nintendo and xbox are having a bit more than a minor hickup..
I very much disagree with the argument that game consoles are dying. Everything may go digital, sure, but consoles will be around for the next 10 years, at the very least.
I don't really see it going all digital for a long time yet and my reasoning is that DVD and Blu-Ray movies and TV boxsets are still selling well, yes Netflix and co are getting more and more popular but people still want to own physical copies of the best shows and films. Until there is a widely used superdupermegafast broadband, we wont see digital only gaming. At quickest a 50gb game will take 65 mins to download, and that is at 120 mbps, the average for most people is 14.7mbps and that takes almost 9hrs to download a 50gb game. So overall the download speeds teamed with Netflix not killing off DVD/Blu-Ray formats shows that gaming is a long way from digital only.
If the gaming division of Sony is the only profitable, then it's extremely likely it will be sold off and made it's own company. I wouldn't exactly worry about the future of Sony consoles if PS4 ends up doing very well this generation and earns a lot of money.
AdamKoralik I didn't say that part wasn't true. I'm pretty sure most of Sony is currently suffering due to having like the second or third best product in all the hardware categories they are invested in. I'm just saying if the gaming division of Sony is the only profitable, it's very likely to be sold off and made it's own company. In other words, no need to worry about them from that perspective.
I really hope Sony don't try and push this PlayStation Now down everybody's throats. I almost feel that by coming out with this Gaikai/PlayStation now is the first step to getting rid of the PlayStation store. 1 thing nobody can argue about though is the fact that Sony have brought this on themselves by like you said entering a market they had nothing to do with and monopolising it with their money at the time and now after the loss they had with the PS3, If the PS4 is goodbye to the hardware market it has to stand out as Sony's best console in every way possible.
I like your videos, but I completely disagree. Sony has made success by promoting physical media far more than Microsoft has. They had financial gain supporting DVD on PS2. Sony had market success and Blu-Ray ownership, and probably the main reason why Blu-Ray won the HD wars against HD-DVD was it's inclusion on the PS3. Also Sony is working with Panasonic on expanding the amount of storage available on Blu-Ray technology. If any company tries to go digital only, it'll be Microsoft, because they have nothing to gain off of physical media, while Sony has a lot to gain with keeping physical media alive.
Wanna laugh Adam? in my country (Argentina) the PS4 is only 50 dollars more expensive than the Wii U, the Wii U here is 6000 pesos (600 DOLLARS!) and the PS4 is 6500 pesos (650 dollars)
You've said this one thing so many times now, but I've tried looking for statistics and research done on the matter, and so far I've not found anything that really agrees with what you are saying. This one thing is how lousy the PS1 was, and how it's failure rate was so high. I've heard nothing but the opposite of this, so I'm kinda curious why you say this. I really don't know anyone's PS1 that has stopped working either, and personally I got several of them and some of them has run for tens of thousands of hours. PS2 on the other hand, some of the versions has some seriously problems with the disc reader/laser, especially when it comes to the DVD reader (CD reader often still works when DVD reader stop working). Not had PS2s die either. Early PS3s I've seen, had and heard about dying many a time. What I'm asking for is some sources backing up what you are saying. Not saying you are wrong, but I've yet to see something backing it up.
I'm referring to an issue in which the console must be flipped on its side or even upside so gravity can compensate for the problem. This will allow the disc to play. If you've never experienced this issue, consider me shocked. It's kind of like having a launch 360 and having never seen or heard about the red rings issue.
AdamKoralik Should maybe add I got a EU launch PS1 running for I really honestly don't know. It must have been on for at least three-four full years of time. o.O Played so many RPGs on that thing, plus had it on for days in a stretch for auto-grinds etc. In any case, while I've heard about one disc reading problem with the PS1 before, I've never encountered it or seen anyone had it. The only near statistics I've found said all the Sega consoles had about the same failure rate as the PS1. Nintendo has of course always been best at this, but then again, they re-use old well-used and tested technology most of the time.
MMDE You're very lucky :). I had about 3 PS1 and all of them had a lasers issue, and you had to put console vertically to play games. My friends had a similiar issues. Also the launch models (with paralleal port in the back of the console and the writings on the buttons instead of symbols) had problems with overheating. Later models were better.
AdamikosPL The one I have that I've used the most is the EU launch model with those parallel ports in the back (for multiplayer in for example the original WipEout game for PS1).
MMDE Personally speaking, I've had disc drive issues with all of Sony's consoles, but I won't be irrational about it, the failure rates of Sony's hardware have always been within the norms of the general electronics industry, I think the reason why the PS3 essentially takes less flack is because there was a certain other competitor with a hardware epidemic that sold just as well. *rolls eyes*. I guarantee you that if any of the PS2's competitors had equal amounts of hardware out there, they would've been scrutinized just as much. The only gray area over the years may be the N64, since it had zero moving parts.
for a long time i found samsung tvs are the way to go as well, but nowadays i think sony tvs are a lot better and more reliable. i had 2 samsung lcd 1080p tv get dead pixels and stuff over the years, which i've not seen on sonys yet. plus samsung is kinda known for just copying a lot of technology developed by companys like sony and panasonic.
Good vid Adam, I hope Sony does not die, they need to pull out a winning card this gen. I used to hate them back in the day when the Dreamcast died, but over time I came to appreciate them by the amazing exclusives they deliver each time! Sega will always be my number one gaming company alongside Nintendo, but Sony is a close second. MS and their ripoff xbox brand can go and drop off the console business for what I care, bunch of scammers money lovers with all their dirty business practices!
I seem to have a love hate relationship with your videos some I agree with 100% and others I think why the fuck would you say that?, I admire your oppinions because you aren't a fanboy of any of the 3 companies. Keep up the good work Adam!
I don't like where gaming is headed, It's just depressing. I miss the 90's.
I agree.
Ditto
who would of ever thought that the PS4 would still be selling faster than the PS2 in 2020! Also the fact it sold almost 1.5 billion billion games as of June 30th, 2020 while it took the PS2 12 years to sell that many games! I'm predicting the PS5 is going to be another beast of a console again in terms of sales!
I am from future. Ps5 was a failure
I think you maintain an entertaining conversation going by yourself without any jump cuts, which to me is very cool.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Thanks dude, I appreciate that.
Thanks.
Are you a fan of Beer and Board Games?
AdamKoralik Yes have been for a long while now and its good to see that the channel and the show's have gone from strength to strength and long may it continue, look forward to seeing what you have to say about the xbox one
Jim Lloyd Awesome. I assume you know I'm on the show.
Thanks, hope you liked the XBox One video.
9/10 on your predictions, other than the PS5 actually coming out; the rest were spot on.
Wow, that HARD Shenmue 3 read. Good call.
Aidan Klobuchar Thanks.
Makes me sad too.
I really hope Sony has straightened its act out - I can't think about the PS3, PSP or Vita without cringing over all of the wasted potential. Maybe the PS4 Vita thing will really pay off. That would be great, as I'd love a reason to use my Vita more than once per month.
Nintendo has 80 billion dollars and Microsoft has 340 billion dollars Sony has 60 million dollars
As much as I love my Dreamcasts, I love my PS1 and PS2 just as much and the hardware has lasted without issue.
That being said, I agree with your original statement that "The PS4 will be a great console, but it has a very bleak future". Steamifying and Streamifying will become the norm.
Makes me sad too.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks.
And yeah dude, it happens all the time. It boggles my mind some times.
I mean if we're talking about amazing, how about Microsoft going from $304 billion to $1.6 trillion since that video was published.
What a great channel!
greetings from Brazil!!
Thank you Carlos.
Have u made a video on the story of sony entering the gaming console thing..
Is that you holding the N in the second row there?! :D
It is. I think you're the first person ever to notice actually.
AdamKoralik Anyways great vids! Recently subed and I've been on a big watching spree on your videos!
once the whole console business is doomed, I want sega to release the dreamcast 2 just for nostalgia!.... then I can die in peace.....
Any thoughts on the project Retro VGS cartridge based game system?
+Luis A. Figueroa Honestly, I'm still not sure what I think of it.
+AdamKoralik well sounds like a nice comeback for cartridges!
do you think the PS5 might just be a pc expansion/ card/ module where you buy it and install it and still use their controllers and games, that way it would be upgrade able or a PLAYSTATION first pc second with slots to upgrade ? I would buy in up to 900$ if it were to last 15 years+
My guess is if anything called PS5 comes out, it'll be some kind of tablet thing that is used for streaming games from Sony's network.
similar to an ouya ?
No, not like the Ouya. More like a Roku (little movie streaming box). Except for games.
Not only would you not have physical copies, but you wouldn't even have downloaded copies. You'd just stream.
but maybe they'd by like sega back in the 16 bit days and put out a PC module/ expansion cart, 3DO did it and so did some others ! is it feasible or possible or probable ?
mrdtmaurice Way too early to speculate on that.
Good bye PlayStation but You will be missed by people but not by Me
Fuck off, you're _nothing._
I really hope the PS4 does well over the next few years. Also, awesome poster in the background :)
Thanks. Are you a Beer and Board Games fan?
AdamKoralik Yes, started watching them the beginning of this past summer after you mentioned them in one of your videos! Awesome stuff. You mentioned before that you wouldn't be very enjoyable to watch on the show since you don't drink, but I think it'd be cool if they got you more involved in the show on camera, rather than behind the scenes.
David Jones I appreciate that.
Where do I get one of those B&B posters?
Right here: subbable.com/beerandboardgames
I can sign it too if you like, just make sure you let them know when buying it.
What about if I wanted everyone to sign it?
Josh Skinner Define "everyone."
AdamKoralik Like, over an extended period, get each person who plays to sign the poster.
I'd be more inclined to buy one then.
Josh Skinner Do you have specific names in mind?
Hey man, can you explain to me how do you estimate the value of the three companies and where do you collect the data from? Thanks in advance.
SONY should make consoles for SEGA xD SEGA Station 5 ftw
Adam can you do a lets play of shenmue 1 and then after that do a lets play on shenmue 2
Adam I have a question for you if Shenmue 3 has DLC what would you do?
Be not surprised.
what do you mean this video is part of your "quick shoot series"
Name of a series from my production company, FigureItOut Productions.
So it's not associated with our other projects.
oh ok. btw I love your intro. something about it feels nostalgic.
also I noticed your videos are interlaced.
My brother had a PS4 but rarely play it he had Watch dogs and Witcher 3 since he was moving more to PC, while I had a Wii U
while the only game I ever bot for the PS4 was Dead or Alive 5 Last Round still like it but rarely played it
I don't know the history of Sony entering the video game market and what Nintendo had to do with that. Could you please suggest where I can get more info on that?
Watch this two part series, skip to about 1:45 in the video.
Nintendo Vs Sony! - The History of the SNES CD - Part 1 - From Concept to Console
AdamKoralik Thank you! Watching it now
Guilty Bystander In all honesty I just grabbed the link to the first one I found.
To each their own I suppose, frankly that sounds like the worst thing imaginable to me.
I've been looking a lot at sales of the consoles recently, and Sony seem to be almost unbeatable (save for their loss to the Wii). The PS4 another 100 million marker. I've never seen the appeal of playstation but I suppose they are doing right in the gaming world. The PS5 looks to be another upscaled PS4?
the only saving grace in the ps3 has is that as of March 31st, 2019 the PS3 sold 999.4 million games: www.sie.com/en/corporate/data.html
the Wii as of June 30th, 2020 only has 921.85 million games sold: www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/hard_soft/index.html
Adam, why are you posting these videos soo late at least here it's like 1 am I don't know what time it is in Chicago but here it's like really late
It's 12:32 AM. I posted this about 12 hours ago though.
oh i must of though t that the 19th was today, oh and sorry i didnt respond imediately
Zag TheEquivalent No worries bro.
No worries, I go off on tangents all the time. You're probably getting it from me, I'm a bad influence.
To be fair the PS3 was a cracking bit of kit, they were making money from the slim onwards, Sony's troubles are not really game industry related, it is their lack of success on shifting TV's etc. The PS4 is outselling the XBone and I can see both being a success, that being said this will be a shorter generation than the last one.
you were wrong on some things, but AWESOME job predicting the Shenmue 3 on ps4 only.
i have 2 playstation ones that have worked perfectly over the past 20-15 years i think part of the reason why it gets a rep for faulty hardware is because at the time children just didn't know how to take good care of the compact disc medium such as throwing the discs around like cartridges and leaving the door open exposing the laser to dust.
Gilberto Prats You played it upside down, you've proven my point sir.
until i used tinker toys that is. upside right side same difference and it still works.
Gilberto Prats Yes, exactly, that's my point. They can be made to work by tinkering with them. But the console shouldn't require that, that's what makes it a badly designed machine.
Hey Adam do you own or plan to get a PSVita?
I don't have one, I don't currently have plans to get one either.
What about the PS4 University?
Do you recommend buying a ps4 though ? I intend to buy one for Christmas.
I prefer it to the XBox One right now, but that's not saying much.
my sales predictions by end of 2014..
ps4- 15mil
xb1- 11mil
wiiu- 6mil
I bought and still use a PS one 16 years ago. We have not had any problems with it at all.
Do you ever put it up on its side?
AdamKoralik
No, wouldn't be able to see the screen properly.
Sony is tanking, there bleeding money left, and right, and the PS3 cost did not help, nor has there TV business, people where not buying them, at least in America, going for cheaper better bargain brands like Vizio, and same for there PC business, with people buying ACER, Emachines, etc...
This video didn't age well lol. In all seriousness tho Good work man I love all your content
Believe me, I hope you're right.
Chicago represent!
That is an excellent point there sir.
Thanks for watching.
It's so sad and unfair that Sony is losing so much money on hardware other than the PS4, because like it or not Sony does make some of the best TV's with great color accuracy and they also have great cameras, laptops etc. the problem is, is that they are priced too high for this economy, and other brands bring a better value!!
even laptop of modern era overheat as i have gone thru several fan pads with my hp g62
I do however, disagree with you on your thoughts on the PS1. for all intents and purposes it was a great system with some of the best IPs on the planet. sorry, im not having a bark, each to his own. haha.
I hope you're right man. I don't want to be right about what I said.
I hope you're right.
Please explain the sony nintendo story. Ur like morgan freeman, when u explain somthing it just clicks
I appreciate that. It's a long story though. I suggest watching this video series about it.
Playstation History Part 1 of 3 (complete version)
I could see the PS4 Slims coming out, which I LOVE my PS2 Slim and usually the Slim models are usually better designed and better functioning. But Sony could just keep producing games for the PS4 even after the 10 year mark, after the next model generations gamesystems have already been released. This would make the PS4 SUPER valuable. I agree the PS4 is their last console so that is also why I stress to everyone to buy a special edition model of the ps4 because it will very likely be much much more valuable when the ps4 is officially retired or Sony goes under...
I bought a Sony google tv and it did not have a game mode option. That means I had a delay lag whenever I played my videogames. I disagree with ou
I never mentioned a "Sony Google TV" that had lag (or didn't have) lag issues.
So, sure, disagree with a statement I never made.
this was excellent. loved the analysis of sony's path. you're dead right about their part in the death of the dedicated video games industry.. naturally, if your only interest is gaming, you're gonna have to do it right, which means doing it for the gamers.
Thank you sir. I'm glad you liked the series.
...Now it's your turn. Hint hint.
Blu ray.
Thank you for watching.
That sounds like a busy road outside your house.
Downtown Chicago, it is.
AdamKoralik Well at least there was no sirens in this one. :)
BaronVonHaggis A rarity.
Believe me, I hope you're right. I'd much rather be wrong and see a PS5 than be right and see horrible shit.
Good video.
God I hope SONY does not pull out because even the Xbox fan boys can admit that companies need competition to well not xbone it again.
Heres to great video games no matter the platform. I salute you.
Thank you sir.
Believe me, I hope you're right.
Yea where I live in Canada it takes 8 hours to download a GB, so you'll never see me getting a digital-only console
PS3 had only one issue: The launch price. Everything else on that console was / is amazing.
AdamKoralik
Like I told, I totally agree on the price issue, but I seriously can't find any flaws with the PS3.
AdamKoralik
I'm just thinking out loud on this one, but I think he means that if the PS3 didn't launch at the price it did (and if Sony didn't entertain the infamous "people will still buy it because it's our new console" attitude), a lot more people might've been willing to let the other issues slide, more often than not, I still find tons of gripes people have with it that the PS2 was just as guilty of, if not more so. And yet these are the same guys that herald the PS2 as the greatest system on God's green earth lol.
It's not correct to say the PS3's pricing was the only problem, no, but I do think for the most part, it was the biggest tipping point concerning the general opinions of it.
8:22 I'm older than you and I disagree with you. But hey, to each their own :-D
Good video buddy - =)
Thank you sir.
Just came back to this video after rumors of a PS5.
the cloud lives on the heart and soul of playstation one. the cloud being playstation now.
i love the playstation brand i would be sad to them go. also ive had my ps1 since 2004 and it does still work. my first one was thrown against a wall HARD
I agree.
If a box comes out named PS5, it'll likely be a low tech streaming device.
Didn't they say they wanted this generation of consoles to last like 10 years or something
Yes, and I really hope it does.
its been talked about this is the last generation of consles period because the companies are going to be moving over to game streaming
Check your facts they had the same or simular DRM to Microsoft, and changed it after seeing the reaction,
I never said they didn't plan to. But in the end, they didn't act on it.
I fear that too.
I appreciate the offer, but I would never do that.
Not a problem. Thanks Adam for the videos.
Sorry but I really can't recommend the TBDX soundtrack enough it's very good:

*Haters* *Gonna* *Hate* and *Maverick* are definitely the stand out tracks.
you say alot of things i agree with sir
Thank you for taking the time to watch sir.
Thank you for watching.
Trust me when I say I hope I'm dead wrong.
I'd much rather be wrong and have a PS5 than be right and have streaming crap.
Hell yeah! But I have a feeling that playstation has too much responsibility than to just make a pile of crap because nintendo and xbox are having a bit more than a minor hickup..
10:46 lol lol lol lol lol lol lol i am laughing out freaking loud. XD
I very much disagree with the argument that game consoles are dying. Everything may go digital, sure, but consoles will be around for the next 10 years, at the very least.
Watch my video specifically about that.
I didn't say it was their only profitable division. I said they're more known for gaming than their other divisions, and that's true.
I'm sorry but didn't PS4 already oversold the WiiU?
The Xbox One has actually sold around 3.2 to 3.5 million units. All the others were accurate though.
I worry about them pushing it too. Thanks for watching.
All i have to say is bring SHENMUE 3 to any console i dont give a fuck what it is on i just want them to finish the series
Wanna laugh Adam? in my country (Argentina) the PS4 is only 50 dollars more expensive than the Wii U, the Wii U here is 6000 pesos (600 DOLLARS!) and the PS4 is 6500 pesos (650 dollars)
That's obscene, sorry to hear that it's so expensive.
MMDE
Personally speaking, I've had disc drive issues with all of Sony's consoles, but I won't be irrational about it, the failure rates of Sony's hardware have always been within the norms of the general electronics industry, I think the reason why the PS3 essentially takes less flack is because there was a certain other competitor with a hardware epidemic that sold just as well. *rolls eyes*. I guarantee you that if any of the PS2's competitors had equal amounts of hardware out there, they would've been scrutinized just as much. The only gray area over the years may be the N64, since it had zero moving parts.
sony has said they want it to last a decade before they make anouther one
Why do you explain how much money Sony have in everyone of your videos?
I explain it in the ones where its relevant.
for a long time i found samsung tvs are the way to go as well, but nowadays i think sony tvs are a lot better and more reliable. i had 2 samsung lcd 1080p tv get dead pixels and stuff over the years, which i've not seen on sonys yet. plus samsung is kinda known for just copying a lot of technology developed by companys like sony and panasonic.
They waited for Microsoft to make the mistakes first. Brilliant!
Thanks for watching sir.
I seem to have a love hate relationship with your videos some I agree with 100% and others I think why the fuck would you say that?, I admire your oppinions because you aren't a fanboy of any of the 3 companies. Keep up the good work Adam!
Thanks. As long as you're entertained, that's all that matters.
I hope you're wrong and there will be a PS5 I might go into a depression, I am to much of a Sony and Nintendo fan boy =)
werewolf914 I hope I'm wrong too.
