    I knew she was going to come with it. Young women listen to the OG’s. Learn from our mistakes and knowing the women in our family shared this information. Our budgets may have been less when we was younger and we wanted to be on trend. Those pieces are long gone along with our money. I too shop everywhere but learned what to look for. Iris be working her style and make it look good because that’s just her. Thanks for sharing. Love your style sense.

    Absolutely agree about natural fabrics and finishing. My grandmother was a seamstress and so those things are in my blood. I spent a lot of time under her foot and my favorite treat was a trip to the fabric store with her where I got to see how important the fabric selection was to a garment as well as how to select notions.
    Similarly for shoes no man made materials including in the lining and the sole. Starting with a great leather sole allows for the shoe to be resoled/protected over the years and can keep shoes lasting for a long time. A good cobbler is as important as a good tailor.
    Finally for me I hate women’s professional clothing to be unlined, particularly pants. A good lining can keep suits in great shape for a long time.
    On your note that designer houses can have their goofs too man I’m still mad about some glitter Manolos that I bought and kept stored until I had an event to wear them for. Put the shoes on as I entered the event. An hour into the event I looked down and the glitter has come off the sides of the shoe showing the webbing underneath 😩. My good money gone because the retailer wouldn’t refund me for them. I’m mad all over again actually,

    I have definitely been paying more attention to materials than I used to!
    As my mom used to say, "price does not dictate style"! And an elder once told me, a true shopper can shop anywhere...
    Thanks for your Great tips Always!

    I will add also hitting up good thrift stores for those vintage pieces. The fabric and make of vintage pieces are unmatched to today's fast fashion. I have found amazing pieces with great quality and I still wear them years later!! You just have to pay attention to the sizing because back then clothes ran a little smaller compared to now even with the same size number. For example, a size 10 in vintage clothing will fit like a size 8 now. Just don't get scared about the size number. Try it on!

  • @blktauna
    @blktauna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    All excellent advice. I'd also remind folks to hold the garment up and see that it hangs straight. Cheap stuff is not always cut on the full straight or full bias and will look wonky when you wear it. Make sure the hems are even. Make sure its not see through where you don't want it t o be. :)

    I bought a beautiful dark grey soft knit from Zara. But it started pilling badly quite soon after. And then - I bought another one! Didn`t learn this lesson first time. So the second knit, also from Zara, in the same beautiful grey shade, soft fluffy knit, made of polyester also pilled badly. The third knit I bought looked the same, exact same colour, soft, fluffy material. Not polyester. The Isabel Marant knit cost me many times more than the Zara knit. But I still wear it, five years later. Learned my lesson.

    Thank you so much for this wisdom!!!
    Let me just say, for the extraordinarily blessed sizes 🙌🏾 (I’m a size 18/20... sometimes 16... sometimes 22, just depends on the style/fabric/brand)... The thing I truly HATE and hope to help one day is how the “Plus-sized industry” RAPES the girls on horrible fabrics at higher prices!!! It’s really sad...

    • @PoliticsFashion
      @PoliticsFashion  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I’ve noticed this and it’s a damn shame. What are some of your favorite size inclusive brands?

    • @nmcelroy3540
      @nmcelroy3540 ปีที่แล้ว

      Universal Standard hands down! I love that they go from size 0-40 and they sell good quality, well made basics! Expensive but at least they have real linen, cotton, pieces.
      For plus sizes I hate that I can’t find quality basics…all the styles seem to be super trendy no classics to be found. As a young professional I can’t wear most of that to work. 😑

    I agree with everything in this video and I would also add that when it comes to buying timeless pieces, make sure you buy garments that fit correctly! Even the most expensive designer garment can looks super cheap if it doesn’t fit you properly, and I have found fit is more hit or miss at the fast fashion brands.

    Thank you again for your great advice. I shop new and thrifted pieces. I have the same views as you pertaining to the fabric. So so important. I personally always stick to two things:
    1) Buy clothes that are 100% cotton/Linen or with a percentage of cotton (breathable/better for the environment)
    2) Treat your clothes well, mostly wash in cold water, delicate cycle and barely dry them in the dryer.
    Most of my pieces last me at least 10 years and I always receive compliments:) a few places I shop, Madewell, Old Navy/Gap, Everlane, Faithful the Brand, Free People, Meshki

    Super informative video and I’ve been paying attention to fabrics since the first video I watched of yours. I’ve noticed fast fashion brands use polyester A LOT. However, some brands like ASOS have pieces that are shelled with silk or satin or something like that. Others simply describe their fabric vaguely like satin-like which is so funny to me. But will keep all of these tips in mind. - Nelle
