The thing is she *kinda* already said the reverse situation herself when talking about how inconvenient it would be to switch rooms partway through a stay, only to then immediately right after ask the front desk to do just that to the other guest. Her statement applied to both parties, she was just too focussed on how it would inconvenience *her* specifically to see that it’s just as unfair to the other guests.

This reminds me of when I worked in the hotel industry, we even had guests who preferred to be CHECKED IN by certain people and got a little upset if that person wasn’t available. Or, very similar to this story, we had this woman who was staying with us and she had cancer. She’d been in this certain room for a few months at this point and another guest does a walk in and wants THIS ROOM, and ONLY THIS ROOM. I try to explain this room has been occupied for months and the guest staying there still had a while left on her reservation, and as he did not reserve a specific room type in advance, we couldn’t guarantee anything. Well this guy didn’t wanna hear it. He wanted this room and the woman in it gone. I eventually convinced him to take another room that I assured him was just as amazing but it baffles me why this man couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t essentially evict a dying old woman from a room she was paying for.

I was surprised, my dad was a customer is always right kind of guy. But he said there are a select few customers that simply aren't worth having.

Hello! Fellow hotel worker here! Yes, this is so true! We have regulars that always want the same room, everytime. I haven't seen a full meltdown yet (heard stories though) but there was this one lady: We actually low key dread when she comes in because she always "finds" something wrong with the room and always wants this one suite we have. One time she came in and "Her" suite wasn't available. Someone arrived the day before and would be staying the next few days, and weren't departing until the same day she was supposed to. We couldn't upgrade here because the suites are our biggest rooms and the suite taken was on our top floor. We had to offer her the suite one floor below (it's literally the exact same room, just one floor below.) When she arrived we checked her in and didn't make a big deal about it, but course she noticed. We explained the situation and apologized...so she spent the next 10 minutes "explaining" how gracious it was of her to accept below what "she had come to expect from our establishment." 🙄
I'm getting bad vibes thinking about this woman. Hopefully I don't summon her by talking about her. Haven't seen her for a while now.😅

I used to stay at this one hotel whenever I was there for business every month, only thing I asked was to not put me on the ground floor and they never did...aside from that, I didn't care. They also never stuck me next to the elevator and once they found out I loved the Oatmeal Raisin cookies they made for the front counter, they would leave a couple in the room upon my arrival. Do you know how nice it was to come in after a 14 hour workday to find a couple of fresh cookies waiting for you? Amazing what being nice to the staff does.

I'm disabled and always ask for the exact opposite because I struggle with stairs and walking longer distances 😅 I've always requested a room on the first floor or close to the stairs/elevator *_if there were any rooms available_* and emphasized that I can manage if necessary.
It's led to getting a free upgrade to a king bed a few times because those were the only/best accessible rooms available and they appreciated how understanding I was about the possibility of not being able to get the accommodations I'd hoped for.
My stepmom claims that I'm "manipulative" because I "get more refunds/discounts/replacements/upgrades than anyone she's ever met".
No, Valerie. This is just what happens when you're nice to the person who's providing you the service you requested instead of starting every conversation with condescension and yelling. When you're nice to people who work in an industry where being treated like an actual person deserving of basic human decency is rare, a lot of those people enjoy expressing their appreciation when they can.

Honestly I get it. In 2017 and 2018 I spent over 500 nights in hotels with well over half of those nights at one hotel. I reserved a room the first time and when checking out asked if they could put me in it for the next stay. And that rolled for about 18 months. Then they had someone else in the room and told me they were putting me in a different room. I damned near had a panic attack. Someone may as well have waited on my front porch and told me someone else lived in my house and now I lived around the block. It sounds stupid until you live it.
Of course I didn’t act a fool. I composed myself and told them any room would be great. I always stayed in a corner suite on the 6th floor. They put me one floor down directly below my normal room. Other than regularly getting off the elevator on the wrong floor it was fine. But it never did feel right.

I don't get the house analogy. If something is your house, you either own it or rent it. Since you don't own the hotel room and instead have agreed to stay in that room for a set amount of time, it's like you are renting a house and are getting to the end of the lease, and then only tell the landlord that you want to renew the lease when they already have a new tenant signed up for the property. Obviously you can't stay in that room, if you wanted that room you should have let them know before someone else was booked in that room.

When you are renting a house/flat for a fixed term, you can still have a sense of remorse when you leave, be it after 6 months or several years. You can also have nostalgia when you visit the area again.
The hotel situation is similar in that it is still a rental, albeit a comparatively shorter one, and if you routinely use a particular room every time you are in that location, you may become attached to it.
It might seem odd that the person doesn't book ahead, but if it is a routine thing, and the staff books you the same room every time (whether you ask for it or not) then we can become easily conditioned by that routine so that we would not even think about it, and just connect a stay at that hotel with the specific room. For most it isn't an entitlement, it is automation, and when that it is broken, it can be disconcerting.

It’s also important to note that this could be a sign of neurodivergence; someone dealing with Autism, OCD, etc. might have a strong anxiety when expectations aren’t met, especially when it comes to familiarity or traditions / rituals. And some people might not know, or might not want to admit, that this is why they’re struggling with the change. Funnily, when I was a kid my father (who was involved in agriculture, mining and construction in an overseas nation) invested in a small hotel group, because his other businesses were using hotels so much- he kept four rooms and a suite at the far end of the main hotel in the capital city for the, in those days, mainly expat execs and their families on their way in & out of the country. I worked in this hotel in my early 20’s- and stayed in the suite whilst I was there- (we did not have a family home in the capital, as the main centre of the company was in a regional town, close to the mine, and that’s where my parents lived) I was sat by the pool whilst not working and the GM of the construction company came over to tell me I had to move out and into another room because he was there (he had been put into another suite but that wasn’t the XYZ Company Suite!) I looked him straight in the eye and asked which of us had his name on top the hotel in big yellow light up letters and refused to engage. My father told me I was an idiot- but not as much of an idiot as Bill for loosing the plot so badly at a 22 year old that he actually pushed my meal off the table! He did not get the suite, nor did he ever get invited back on the company boat- but that was because my mum was outraged, and could hold a grudge! 😂
Years later, I spent 6 weeks living in a hotel mon-fri with work, on the fifth week the room I’d had for the weeks before wasn’t available- and I felt really ‘off’ all week, it was the ‘wrong location’ the ‘wrong floor’ and the ‘wrong layout’ and I could not get comfortable!

I stayed in one hotel for business, 5 nights a week for 2 years. At some point early on, the front desk asked how the room was (standard customer care question). I said, off-hand, that I liked it because it was a west facing corner room with a view over the parking lot (better than the view over the water treatment plant).
After that, I was always in that room. Always. I'd check in, and be met with "good news! Your favorite room is available!".
Yay. Room 5001 again. I knew every bump and scratch in the wall. I could fix the AC faster than maintenance (loose hoses, eventually brought new clips from home). When i die and go to hell, it will be that room and the AC won't work. But they were so pleased to "help" me, I just couldn't say anything.

I recently had a weekly guest that, after only her FIRST stay, became attached to a specific room. However, a long term guest got booked into that room before she came back for her next stay. Though we were able to place her her in an IDENTICAL room, RIGHT NEXT DOOR, to her preferred room, she continued to ask about that first room she had stayed in every time she returned. Yet it was no longer available. We did our best to accommodate every request that she came to us with - early check ins, extremely late check outs, special housekeeping scheduling just for her, an extra mini fridge in the room, etc. But… we couldn’t get her THAT room. She even asked for a discount on top of her already discounted negotiated rate. Then she suddenly stopped staying with us. According to her, OTHER hotels that she has stayed at have ALWAYS been able to keep her in the same room EVERY week. She must have gone back to one of those, then. Good luck to them. To say that guest was “high maintenance” would be putting it mildly.

When I traveled with my cats I simply requested first floor near a door/parking area so that it would be easy for me to move the cats inside. Now as a handicapped traveler I request a shower bench seat. It doesn't matter the floor as long as the shower has a bench seat. All the hotels I've stayed in have been incredibly accommodating and absolutely wonderful. I always make sure to leave a positive review on any public sites highlighting all the positives of my stay and how employees went above and beyond to assist.

This was all fun and games until the end portion. The phrase “irrationally attached to a room for no reason” really struck a chord for me. I have ASD and my brain loves routine and familiarity, a sudden change in routine can be quite distressing for me, even causing meltdowns. If I was in their situation, in which I had stayed in the same room multiple times, I would definitely have an attachment to that room, not because it’s special or anything but just because I know exactly where it, it is completely familiar and it is part of my routine there. Of course I would never ever even dare to try and take someone else’s room or even complain about it, I hate confrontation. But I just think it would be nice if people were more open minded as to why people could have an attachment to rooms. It’s not irrational, it’s not stupid or insane. Neurodivergent people are just wired a bit differently to you neurotypicals and that’s ok, it doesn’t make them weird or alien

Would you want to visit a hotel that allows people to act like this with no consequences? They're just going to do it again and disturb others making those people not want to stay at your hotel. Word of mouth will get around of these kinds of experiences. If only businesses understood that if repeated enough times other guests will not want to do business where they may be harassed by entitled people. Consequences up to and including permanent bans for karen type abuses send a strong message that order, decorum and respect are to be expected from all who would enter. Like this fixation on things being just the way they are in their head or that they are used to have them is so typical... plus the social awkwardness to get it, too.

I could see myself doing or rather attempting the same when I was maybe in kindergarden or elementary school. I learnt that this is not the way other people feel about things, and I also learnt to see that the other person might not be too happy to move out, and then gladly be willing to accept another room. but I had to learn that. Cognitively. It did not come naturally to me.

I have stayed in different hotels and varying levels of nice rooms. To me, as long as the neighbors are nice and quiet, house keeping actually sees the Do Not Disturb sign and leaves, I am generally a happy person. But there was this one hotel that I wasn't fond of. For whatever reason I just felt... Watched in my room. I literally had to go to a mall two blocks away to get dressed and basically cat bath in the handicap bathroom stall. No idea why, but the room just gave me bad vibes. There were no other rooms free, so I had to tough it out. But when I did check out, I asked the GM if the room had history or something because I felt like I was being watched. He told me that some other guests have said the same but they have renovated the room a few times to try and see why it was. But it still happens. He apologized that I felt so unsafe and gave me a lovely discount for the next time I stayed with them.
I later looked up the hotel and found out the room had been the sight of a grizzly r*pae and m*order back in the 30s. The hotel had expanded bout onto the site once the original employee dorm was torn down. So that "being watched" feeling was likely the victim or the killer watching me... Yeah no.... Not staying in that room again.

I used to travel for business quite a lot and there was a particular room I really liked at the hotel next door to our office headquarters. On the few occasions that room wasn't available, I'll admit I was disappointed, but I never made a fuss about it.
Why did I like that room? It was one of the few rooms at that hotel that was a poolside mini suite, so it felt more like an apartment (there were only about 10-15 rooms in the hotel like that. All the rest were up in the "tower" portion of the hotel, and those didn't come with a little dining area with a microwave and fridge. It even came with its own private covered parking space. Since I stayed in that room so often, it started feeling like "home."
I can also say that a big part of my preferring to always stay in that room is because I'm autistic and I like my routine. That's the only hotel that I ever had a preferred room, only because I was traveling there 5-6x year and staying 2-5 weeks at a time (all on my employer's dime). I've never had an occasion to travel to another hotel that frequently.

I love when you have regular guests and they are shocked when you're booked. "I give this hotel a lot of business" I FUCKING HATE THAT. Just cause you stay here often does not mean you own the business. We have rules. It isn't your room you are renting a room. Also people do this. They want "THEIR ROOM". They wanted to be treated as they are more important then everyone else there. If anything is out of place too. They will make the front desk clerk's life a living nightmare. I've had people call me horrendous things during my time in the hotel business. I was there for six years. I was drained when I left. I went to grad school to try and move my career and life forward. I gave my boss, who had been great to me for years great dude, a month's notice. He then wanted to take on an extra week of work and I was real with him. "Sorry man, I'm just burnt out." But i do wonder what is it about that woom. Maybe she spent her honeymoon there, maybe a special vacation?
There is a hotel i stay at. Every year with my wife, the same room request a year in advance. I make sure i request it, i call a month prior, i offer extra money just to keep my room.
I dont have much left of my wife. That room.... that tradition... it means the world to me. It reminds me of our honeymoon. Of the greatest night of my life with my soulmate.
Im not sure i could take another room there. I would never be able to sleep.

When I was in my twenties I had a friend that would always stay on the second floor of a certain motel. I found out why when I finally gave in and went with him there one time. I thought it was because from his balcony he could look down on everybody in the pool but that had nothing to do with it. He got a huge kick out of throwing his luggage out the door and down into the bed of his pickup. He was laughing so hard he could barely breathe. He told me that was his ritual for releasing all of the stress from his business trip.
