I remember getting this when it came out in the US and not being into it because of King's voice. My grandmother who loved opera , remarked about how he had a masterful falsetto. Now I love this.
From what I remember, an old friend commented on King's vocals which he said could hit the sixth or eighth octave. And they better not put King or Fate into the R&RHOF. That place is horrendous. How dare King be alongside singers and bands that are included but not a single rock song. Never put King Diamond/Merciful Fate under the same roof with people like Michael Jackson, Madonna, even rap artists.
For an album recorded back in the mid 80s on a low budget, the freshness of it is unbelievable. The King and MF were truly ahead of their time in terms of craft.

I used to like putting this on when I was driving and I remember when my son was little, he was in the back in his car seat kicking his feet and laughing. My son turned 40 last month and Melissa is his favorite Metal album.
Into the Coven is a masterpiece for metal... the intro, the main riff, the lyrics, the drums fills, and the amazing vocals... the best song of Mercyful Fate
My favorite song not only off the album but off of any album from any band and I'm a 25 year old American boy. And I love EVERY song on Melissa but there is nothing tastier than that riff kicking in after the acoustic man just doesn't get any better.

Melissa is the debut studio album by Danish heavy metal band Mercyful Fate, released on this day 10/30/83. It was the first album released by Roadrunner Records. This was also the first Mercyful Fate effort to get an official release in the United States through Megaforce Records, as the self-titled EP was a highly sought after import, and the BBC sessions were only available on bootleg tapes. Melissa has been identified as one of the earliest examples of extreme metal, and is often considered to be a major influence on the then-developing thrash metal, black metal and death metal genres.
