Yep, I was 17 when I bought it, saw them at L’Amour and the Beacon Theatre in NYC when they were touring for this album. Lemmy and Motörhead were complete douche bags for yanking the King offstage, as they knew it would not be easy to follow them, much like when Metallica opened for GnR, GnR knew they were in trouble.
I can remember when I first bought this album,the eyes lookin' right at me and the finger pointing right to my soul.When I heard King's voice,I was immediately hooked.This album is totally Sic!!! All Hail Mercyful Fate.

As far as heavy music goes, this album has everything I could possibly ask for and more. Masterful arrangements, guitar riffs, overall musicianship, vocals, vibe, sound, imagery... elite level, original music.
Man, production is the last thing on my mind when I listen to this. It's not so bad (not bad at all IMO) that you can't pick out the absolute WEALTH of musical detail and metal spirit on display.
The melodic and rhythmic inventiveness and counterpoint playing with fingers of the bass guitar on this album, and especially in Night of the unborn, is simply breathtaking.... R.I.P Timi Hansen... Bass guitar Master🔥

This is an absolute metal masterpiece and I never knew about MF or King until around the late 90's and I was a complete metal head in the 70's and 80's or so I thought. The arrangements, the vocals are just magnificent, everything is happening on this one.

This was my first taste of MF...or so I thought...this cassette I bought brand new in 1989 actually had Slayer's Hell Awaits album on it somehow. I'd never heard Slayer yet at that time either so I went a while thinking I was listening to MF when I was actually hearing Slayer. Needless to say I discovered 2 bands in 1 and love them both, thank you Metal Blade!

If you're talking about Speed Metal, Progressive Metal or Doom/Death Metal, this album is essential. Mercyful Fate were at their peak on the record. Timi's bass playing is off the hook, the dual guitars are masterful, the drumming is top-notch and King's vocals are insanely good. Sadly, no one makes records like this anymore. Thankfully we have this masterpiece to enjoy for years to come. RIP Timi

Hello...Hank Shermann n Michael Denner . Think Shermann was all of 19yrs old (?) During this time Shermann composed all the music for 1983's Melissa and most of 1984's Don't Break the Oath, widely considered Mercyful Fate's most seminal albums.
After years of delving into metal, experimental, noise, power electronics, etc, this is still something that ages perfectly in a sea of forgettable rock music
To me this is the apex of Mercyful Fate but that's not to take away from their other albums. Each one has strengths in their own way and a supply of musical styles that, sadly, maybe are in their twilight of the metal genre. Each member of this epic band was at the top of musical proficiency when they recorded this Satanic masterpiece.

The production is perfect on this. It's heavy, but still crisp and clear, like Ride the Lightning or Powerslave.
