I agree with the 1st part of that comment but the 2nd part Slayer was part of a select few from the 80's that are the definition of Heavy Metal/Thrash/Black Metal genre. Don't forget Venom who directly influenced Slayer.
1983 Show No Mercy. 1984 Haunting The Chapel. 1985 Hell Awaits. 1986 Reign In Blood. 1988 South Of Heaven. 1990 Seasons In The Abyss. In 7-8 years we got all those albums. Now it takes a band 8 years to make one bloody album. And none of them come close to these albums.
Wow now this is a depressing comment 😂. You are correct unfortunately. I can't think of one newer band that can even compete with Slayer's greatness which is sad. I hate to be that old dude who shits on the more modern type of music but man it's impossible not to be when newer Metal/Punk bands just don't match up whatsoever with the greats. Mastodon is up there but have been around since 2001 or so? Almost 25 years now! What newer Metal/Punk band that came after the year 2010-2015? I can't think of one which is depressing.

Death Metal really started with bands like Possessed, Sodom, Venom, and Celtic Frost. Slayer was arguably an influence on both Thrash and Death Metal. wikipedia Death_metal
Slayer really is the first death metal band. Kill again is pure death metal riffing ... haunting the chapel really pushed things farther, before hell awaits. Possessed was heavy but the vocals were an accident . Jeff was Influenced by lemmy and originally had wanted tbe vocals to be similar. The producer buried them in reverb and delay and they sound heavier than what was originally intended. Of course now it is what it is and they're known for being one of the first. But everyone forgets, possessed opened for slayer in 85 while supporting haunting the chapel, that's why they sound really heavy, slayer influenced those 16 year olds....
Slayer also played their instruments with much more precision than early sodom, bathory, and frost, I love all of them, but slayer were ahead of them all.. Credit due where it's due...

Well, Celtic Frost, Venom and Sodom, influenced more the black Metal genre, they were, indeed influence for Death Metal, but the Death Metal primary influences were, Slayer, Possessed, and Kreator, and some south american bands, Sarcofago, Sepultura (first album ftw) Vulcano, Pentagram, and Parabellu, well actually all those bands were influences or both genres, but Slayer on Hell Awaits has a lot of Death Metal riffing and elements, even Tom vocals were harder on this and Hell Awaits.
Celtic Frost was a major influence for death metal too. If you check magazines from the 80s, you can see phrases like "Mr Death Metal himself" (for Tom Warrior) and "the Gods and Originators of Avant Garde Death Metal"
