Amazing to hear how much better the 1938 stock is than the 1959. That creaking and groaning from the 1959 stock is something I always will remember from my time taking the northern line as a kid. Used to scare me as it sounded so dangerous!

I can remember riding on the 38 stock as a kid...I was probably about 10, but it felt like I was back in WW2, awesome!

I love both tube stocks. The red 1938 stock is beautiful.

Once went down to Epping Station to find a 1959 tube stock train park up on platform 2. It was being used as a maintenance train but my mum thought they were putting a good train onto the track for once.

1:11 - I will always remember the 1959 stock for that noisy friction sound. That was the sound of neglect, if I am not mistaken.

1938 stock definitely, it looks classy and welcoming. The 1959 stock though looks practical.

38 stock for design look and motor whine, and less bumpy ride at full speed , 59 stock more robust slightly faster acceleration rate, although a mate of mine who was a driver on Bakerloo line in the mid 1970's once raced an A60 from Finchley road to Neasden flyover running side, to the shock of the met driver who being over taken by a much older train !

The 1938 stock had a perfect desgn- they should just have upgraded the engine and kept everything the same IMO!

I do remember that rather eerie creaking on the 1959 stock! My memories of 1938 stock are a bit more patchy as there weren't that many around when I was riding the tube in my youth.

I remember Metro-Cammell. Nice old trains, just like the Routemaster. Silver presumably means unpainted - so saving on maintenance

Having been a Guard & Motorman on both stocks operationally I’d say 38 was preferred by the Guard and 59 by the Motorman but on purely an aesthetic and ride comfort level the 38 easily wins

Liked both to be honest, but the 59/62's did bounce about a bit on that rubber suspension ! Happy days, and some much missed sounds there.

The 38 stock was dingy, but design wise - shaped by an artists hand. The 59 stock was bright and modern at that time. I can remember the 38`s flying out of the tunnel from Hendon to Colindale - seemed faster to me than the 59`s. I`m sure they started on the Central and Piccadilly lines first though, the Northern line had to wait years for dedicated new trains!

    • @spdfatomicstructure
      @spdfatomicstructure 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Indeed. And even then there were not enough 1959 stock trains (even after the entire fleet of Piccadilly line 1959 stock trains were phased out in favour of 1973 stock due to the extension to Heathrow, and thus transferred to the Northern line). The fleet had to be bolstered by the first 30 1972 stock trains

Since the 1959 Stock was only a development of the 1938 Stock, it should be better. The suspension was l lot worse, however (no damping). The 1938 Stock was plagued by troublesom brake compressors (the famous KLL4 rotaries) which the 1959 Stock didn't have. The 1959 Stock also had flourescent lighting (less dingy). the 1938 Stock was all new development at that time, which led to many modifications in service, making it difficult to say which was "better". I found both stocks fascinating!

Pics a bit unfair on the 1959's very sad and tatty whereas the 1938 looks near pristine. Both were wonderful. I thought the interiors of the '59's looked great when well kept with the blue/green seats and blue armrests- suited them perfectly.

Wow. The 70s were also the time when the current-generation 73 stock was introduced. Did you get a chance to drive it? If so, how does it compare to the 38 stock?

Budget on paint? Maybe they invested a lot into the trains themselves that there wasn't much budget for painting.

I did work experience at Morden in 2004, according to staff, 1959 stock wasn't painted because unlike the 1938 stock, as it was made from aluminium it didn't rust and therefore you didn't need to paint it. However it was only with the rise in trains being defaced with graffiti that they reversed this idea. Part of the idea was an economic development as applying paint adds two tonnes to the weight of a train. Nowadays it is a small price to pay to make it look half decent...
