Many A Stock Memories

  • A film about the former London Transport / London Underground Metropolitan Line A stock trains which were introduced in the early 1960's and withdrawn in 2012.
    The trains are seen (both outside and inside) in original format, after refurbishment for one person operation, with three different styles of refurbishment and in their final format.
    Mostly this film comprises S-VHS and HD video but it also includes other formats as well as still images and a little silent super 8 cine film from the days before I had a camcorder. Footage seen dates from the late 1970's to 2012.

    The A Stock was historically significant for multiple reasons:
    🚇 It was the fastest London Underground rolling stock, and the world's fastest rolling stock to operate on 4th rail electrification.
    🚇 It was the only London Underground rolling stock with luggage racks and umbrella hooks, as it was designed for journeys that could last over 1 hour.
    🚇 It was the last London Underground rolling stock with no automated announcements.
    🚇 At the time of its withdrawal, it was the oldest rolling stock in service on any metro system anywhere in Europe, having lasted for more than 50 years in service.

    Those trains were built to a proper standard sized subway train on the Underground and they were the best on the network. I loved the A60/62 Stock on the Metropolitan Line and East London Line because they were legendary to travel on before all of them were scrapped in the end.

      Alas, they had asbestos and were deemed a potential health hazard - as long as their bodywork remained intact they were safe, the danger was that in years to come someone might start doing work on them which includes drilling holes in their bodywork without realising the risk of releasing the asbestos in to the atmosphere.

    I always loved the A Stock particularly in the 2000s when I was a small child. I always remember going to and from the city, the best when it goes fast and you can bounce on the comfiest seats in the world and race past the other LU Stocks.
    When S8 Stocks were introduced, I liked a few ideas they had (including walk-through trains to make life easier), but the they don't really have the characteristics of the true Met line rolling stock.
    The last time I ever saw an A Stock was in December 2016, when one was a RAT, at Moor Park. I even got it to whistle. Thankfully there's one car at the Acton Museum, but every time I see that train I'd remember straight back to my childhood of these old yet wonderful machines.
    Good memories.

      alas, they have all gone - because of asbestos none were saved for preservation - the concern was that an unwary person in the preservation movement might unwittingly do something to the train's bodywork that causes asbestos to be released in to the atmosphere

      @@apx2444....the Bakerloo line trains are now the oldest trains on the tube network, dating from 1967. They're similar in looks to the Piccadilly line trains, but an older version.
      It's weird though that the Piccadilly line trains are going to be replaced first.
      I'm guessing this is because the Piccadilly line carries alot more people than the Bakerloo line does - plus it serves London's biggest airport, so I guess this is why they made the decision they did.
      New Piccadilly line trains to arrive in 2025. But new Bakerloo line trains not until 2030 at the earliest. Even the Central line will get brand new stock before then. But again it carries alot more people than the Bakerloo line does. I think the Bakerloo line carries the fewest amount of people per year of any of the tube lines - except the Waterloo & City line.

    Glad to have caught this video. I lived in the UK for a short time (2007-9) and rode this equipment regularly between Amersham and points east. There was a lot of talk of the new trains coming while I was there, but it would be another 3 years, I guess, until the new stuff finally arrived. I had the opportunity to ride the new S stock while back on a visit. They are certainly nice trains, but there was something special about those old trains, with their air chimes and whistles.

I also grew up with the S-Stock and so I also find that sentimental as well. I do like the girth on the A. I think we need a more powerful train to run fast services and let the S-Stock run local. Also electify Chiltern rail and put the Aylesbury route on the overground.

    From a Guards point of view the A60 was like (In winter) a nightmare, going to Amersham my Road Trainer told me to buy a pair of ladies tights and wear them, after one run in December I bought a pair along with thick gloves and a tea can with hot coffee, It was just like working in a freezer, and through in uncoupling in the sidings at Amersham hoping you had a spare 20 amp fuse in the cab, or it's GD01 (Guard) go walkies which means climb down onto the track and check out another cab for a red control fuse, in 1974 LT failed to issue you with shoes and I wore thin sole lace-ups, add the snow and you find yourself swopping duties with a Guard on the Circle line, At Neasden we worked all of the "Woodline" (Metropolitan main) and we also did Circles (Max 6) if you worked at Baker Street 31 & 34 duties did EIGHT circles on a Saturday Ho ho ho, let them suffer, Getting back to the A60 after the refit what used to be NOT a problem became one RED & GREEN with A&D Ends, gone was the universal coupler, now you had to check your note book (SILLY) the best part of an A60 was a missing Guards bar, that "stopped" passenger from walking through your position WRONG again, no Guards bar and "ALL CHANGE" this train is out of service. BIG SMILE off you go to the front of the train and have some handle time (Driving) not that we did that wink wink.

      Generally I caught the 8:14am Liverpool St - Amersham when on my way to school. This used the now closed bay platform. On one summer morning the front seating bay (by the driver's cab) was infested with greenfly - I remember noticing a few flying around and on window sills when I boarded the train... then looking up and seeing a seething mass of green - that is when I ran....

      Most of this film had live sound which was recorded at the same time as the video images however a few scenes came from silent super 8 film (or still images) where I had to add the sound.
      The super 8 film clips included the views with the BR Mk2 coaches, the views at West Hampstead with the 1986 tube stock and the train departing from Chalfont and Latimer. All other motion picture footage came from videotape and the sounds were recorded simultaneously. This includes the refurbished train leaving Baker Street where the train driver wished me a Merry Christmas. This was filmed a day or so before Christmas 1990.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus

      Things were very different on the railways in those days - many trains were still hauled by steam engines and these tended to place their front lights at different locations around the front of the train to designate the type of train - express passenger, goods train, a train without passengers, and much more.
      also, front lights were more seen as marker lights for the signalman and track workers to see - not headlights. Typically these lights were not at all bright - especially when oil lamps were used they were about as bright as a candle. Oh and of the glass lens on the light was dirty then the light could be very faint!

    They really should've converted the Metropolitan line into an Overground, instead of East London Line... ELL was more tube-like than Met, they could've just extended it without changing the mode of operation

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The historic nature of the services help to explain why this did not happen
      btw in its early days the East London line was owned by a consortia of 6 railway companies, 2 of which ended up as part of London Transport with the remaining 4 ending up as part of British Railways.
      In addition to goods / freight trains it was also used by BR passenger trains - such as summer weekend holiday excursion trains to the seaside from Loughton - these were still running in the 1950's, possibly even the 1960's, which was long after tube trains had taken over the route to Epping

    • @Psevdonim123
      @Psevdonim123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CitytransportInfoplus in 2007 all this was irrelevant... It doesn't matter which companies used to own ELL or which services used to run on it. In 2007 it was all tube. The thing is ELL doesn't have this crazy branching like Met has, the whole line is inside Greater London, even after extensions, even as a part of the Overground it has a tube-like service, without any fast or semi-fast trains, with two minute interval between trains in the section between Dalston Junction and Surrey Quays. I just think someone really wanted a bite of it... Because if you look at the numbers after ELL extension as part of the Overground, it has more passengers than the Met...
