Watching our friends over at Ham Radio Crash Course, they said the equipment that was saving lives in hurricane relief was handheld radios, not base stations. It stands to reason to me, that more cheap radios in more hands is the way to go for emergency prepardness.
Day One of owning a Boufwang, i scanned randomly through VFO mode finding absolutely nothing but truck sounds. Day Two i searched online for frequencies and listened to the weather. Day Three i did more digging and discovered some local repeaters. Day Four i decided i don't want to get a ham license to talk to the retirement home about the weather.
You could start your own group and talk about what you want to, just saying… You will have to yield to weekly nets on the repeater, 1-2 hours per week, usually in the evenings after their dinner and before lights-out at the home.
My squirting is completely spurious. I just bought a couple super cheap Baofwang radios and I am surprised at the quality and how easy they are to program. This is a radio I could pick up after a couple months of inactivity and figure out how to hit a repeater in about 10 minutes. I find them easier to use than most of the big brands! I'm a HAM but I'm not at all SAD. Have a great day.
The service you get with Boofwangs depends in part who sold it. Radios on Amazon are sold by many vendors. Radioddity was the seller of my Boofwang UV-9G, and they did a great job handling a problem with that inexpensive radio.

Is there a Boo-Fwang that can receive AM broadcast 540-1700 kHz? Since some can recieve FM 86 - 108 FM and NOAA weather frequencies. Would make a great all around emcomm radio.
if i were to correct you, i would be wrong. The wording was absolutely correct. It conveyed accurate information to the relevant viewers, while simultaneously providing material for the comments section.
You taught me how to program my uv5r years ago. What I can say for the radio is that between that and my wouxan, I can key up both in certain areas of my house and the baofeng will get the repeater talking everytime. Love my wouxan but it has to be in pretty good location to work. Maybe I got a dud, not sure.
The last point is why I get the cheap radios. Easy to replace. I upgraded to that higher quality radio after I learned from my mistakes and learned exactly what I needed the radio for. Everyone should have a cheap radio phase to learn who you are, what you like to do together, and how much you're willing to risk when things get rough. Once that inevitably fails, though, you can be the best operator of your spurious emissions and know exactly how to use your antenna and maybe get cool accessories too. Or, buy a couple and have an awesome 3-way conversation with a friend. You'll eventually want to upgrade anyway so don't get too upset if your first experience is expensive. They all are.
First, the Rocky Talkie (RT) has a keypad and the...oh, wait, that's the Baofeng. The RT has a far greater range than the...er...okay, never mind that, either. Oh, yeah, the RT can easily be plugged into a computer and programmed using a simple cable, while the...eh...never mind. The RT has a super-heterodyne comp...er, eh...okay, so it doesn't have a sophisticated squelch, who needs 'em? The RT has cleaner RF emissions, while the Baofeng UV-5R...eh, also now has clean RF emissions. The RT may be ten times more expensive that the Baofeng, but if you break your RT, you can buy nine more RTs for the same...wait, switch that. In fact, forget everything. Here's the simple unvarnished truth: And it is as follows. Buy a TYT UV8000D/E radio for $62. It's just as well made as the RT, is one of the cleanest radios on the market at any price, is a true-blue 10W tri-band radio, can be easily programmed on any computer and it's not a Baofeng. You can also buy three TYT UV8000s, so if you break one radio, you'll have two more radios that are better than the RT. Or you can buy ten UV-5R radios and keep nine in a drawer. Cold, hard indisputable facts, my friends. Me, I'll take the three UV8000s and put two in a drawer.
I purchased my first Boofwang radio about 12-years ago, just before getting approved by the FCCs. After about 5-years, it started breaking squelch at random times for no reason. Tossed it in the junk drawer and bought another. In for $50 so far, still not close to the cost of a Yeasus or Kenwoods. I participate in the local emergency net. Cut it off before the rag-chew consisting of yard work and medical visits. The club does help out with communications for bike races and long distance foot-races in the mountains. Each race does have a medical emergency from falling or while running or people running $12000 bicycles into trees or bears while wearing tight shorts. The club does run the .gov required local hospital emergency net on standard HF, note, not digital like the .gov radios…what do “they” know? BTW, I have found more rude people in the mountain biking groups, which is sayin a lot.
I love my UV-5R. It's easy to use once I learned all the stuff that you've went over in a few videos. Works better then the motorola CLS 1410's at work. And I can listen to stuff while staying tuned into the channel setup for work.
Well.... my baofeng has numbers like. 462.55000 so, every time I put in numbers it would say canceled. Ugh. Did you see the ham/antenna adapter for cell phones? Kv4p
UV-5Rs are my go-to for spotting or when I'm out of the Jeep, but on trail rides I use an installed mobile rig. The RTs are ideal for folks who just need a PHS radio (push here, stupid). Everything you need, nothing you don't, and you don't need a PhD in RadioDorkery to set 'em up. I have my XTS-5000 and UV-878+, (and a couple Icoms) for when I want advanced features. But for Jeeping? KISS principle rules.

Dude get a "BOOFWANG" and add an ABREE long range antenna for 10$ and I get EMS, etc from my hometown in the hills from Knoxville and surrounding areas if I want. Baofeng may be cheap but it does not need fancy smancy crap! I got my radio/antenna package all said and done for 30$. We over analyze crap too much sometimes instead of enjoying things that work as advertised!
Frankly, I would recommend the TIDRADIO MD-11 over the Rocky Talkie. The former is an FRS at 2W, but in most cases that will not make a big difference. And yes, the Rocky Talkie IS objectively better, but so massively overpriced (itself a marketing technique) compared to the MD-11 that it is rather ridiculous. For that price I rather get a Wouxun or even a Btech GMRS Pro (with tons of options the Rocky Talkie does NOT offer!). My 2cts and ymmv of course. Thanks for the video!

So if you just bought the uv5r, applied for your gmrs license and only want to use gmrs, would you stick with the uv5r or return to get the uv5g plus? Or keep the 5r and get an additional gplus? Also, do you have a video on how the frs and gmrs is different? I don’t understand why you need a gmrs and license if they’re operating on the same frequencies as frs radios. Thank you for your time!
Hypothetical: if you have 100 Boo-Fwang radios set up to receive the same frequency and volume at 50%. One transmits on same said frequency. How are the louds? Does adding or taking away of radios effect the louds? BTW. Great vid.

No, because I like the small & compact antenna that comes with the Rocky Talkie and I only use the radio to talk with my group within a mile or so of me when i'm off-roading, i'm not trying to bounce my signal off the moon.
I would add when buying on Amazon in the EU you’re protected by your statutory rights under EU law that states retailers have to either fix, repair or refund any product you buy for 6 years from the date of purchase. One of my Boofwang UV-5Rs died after two years of ownership, Amazon gave me a credit to purchase a new one under said legislation
Personally loving my AR-5RM's they make wonderful multi-band scanners, sure a more expensive unit might have a better RX/TX but I'm not made of money and the pair of these was less than 1 of my Tidradio H8's. Sidenote, Randy seen the UV-25's? or the unlocked AR-25r?

Yeah I've had my experience with cheap radios throughout my life. Ended up with 5 kids and paying child support for 3 of them.. Definitely choose wisely guys.. easy to get ends up costing you in the end.
quick question, With the PTT on the left side of the radios. are they designed to be held with the left or right hand? I'm left handed and have always held them with my left hand.
I would like to also say the quality control should not be paid by the customer as what you buy as t/c the producer of said objects should be within spec of the blueprints for them to manufacturer . That the components should work that why you have a warrenty , china also gives you a warrenty on said products . Over hear if a product from amazon breaks down within 9 months tyou can send it back for a new one or get your money back.

I dont think it matters because no matter which hand it is in you can use either your thumb or your finger to pull the talk-trigger.

I would like to also say the quality control should not be paid by the customer as what you buy as t/c the producer of said objects should be within spec of the blueprints for them to manufacturer .
That the components should work that why you have a warrenty , china also gives you a warrenty on said products .
Over hear if a product from amazon breaks down within 9 months tyou can send it back for a new one or get your money back.
What about the BF-F8HP compared to UV-5R? I know it’s 8 watts over the 5R 4 watts.
The old-style BF-F8HP and the standard UV-5R are virtually identical other than 3 extra watts on the F8HP..
