Just found your channel today and I've already watched 7-8 videos, not because I am necessarily interested in radios but because of your presentation and (assumed) distain for the fed gubment.
I'm a ham (and I have a GMRS license as well), and I don't even get what the fuss is about as long as you're not interfering with business, EMS, or repeater frequencies, or being a lid in general. I'm willing to bet that if you punched in a frequency from the simplex portion of the 2m band plan and started talking to your buddy, nobody would even know or care. If they DID stumble across your conversation, they probably still wouldn't care. You only have to ID once every ten minutes on ham frequencies, and NOBODY is going to sit there and time ten minutes out to see if you ID or not LOL. Like Randy said, as long as you're not being a jackass, nobody is going to care.
Baofeng on GMRS is not a big deal, especially compared to everything else. Entire groups of off roaders and dog hunting clubs use Marine VHF radios out in the woods or off road. As long as it is not interfering with the Coast Guard or marine traffic no one will do anything about it. They would need to receive a credible complaint that was causing a serious issue with some evidence. The FCC investigators would then determine if it was worthwhile and prioritize against their existing case work. If it was a big enough problem, they would then go out and investigate and start collecting evidence. If they can gain compliance in the field they will and probably drop it. If they cannot gain compliance and it is still an issue then they turn over the casework to the lawyers to see if they think it is a big enough deal for a Letter and proceed from there.
what would be awesome, is if with all the baofeng radios, youd mention whether or not the batteries are interchangeable... thats all... love your videos and your humor...
Thanks for your time making and posting this. It was very helpful. Not a radio guy and getting less techy by the day. I do have an appreciation for sarcasm punctuated with long pauses. It adds some humor to an otherwise "confuckulated" topic.
Just get the chirp program, cord, and program the FRS channels. Use it all you want on FRS. Nobody cares if it's not meant to be used on FRS, or if it's too many watts. As a sad ham, I do have a request: PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP KERCHUNKING REPEATERS INCESSANTLY !!!! Hey, I get it, you wanna make sure your radio works, if you gotta do it, do it once. I beg you all. Licence or not.
Thank you . I'm a hiker overlander . I have not used it out in the wild . I do not have a license . But it only transmits a few miles . If I'm wheeling in the forest , with friends, yes, I'll take my chances . Lol . After all there are real criminals to catch .
It really depends on the environment. I barely get a mi simplex in my neighborhood, but I can hit the repeater 27 mi away on a hill no problem, if I can see the hill. That's on a UV-9G, but it's only putting out a little over 2W on a stock antenna.
Using A Baofeng UV-5R Without An FCC License - Do You Need A License To Use a Baofeng? Yes Transmitting: the uv5r was not made to be used on the FRS frequencies or any other band besides then ham for transmitting. No if your just listening or using the flashlight. OR if there is a true emergency. Enforcements: does not equate with the laws on the books if you are a morally upright person. Edit: Yup he covered it all.
If you're talking to your friends, of course they wouldnt say anything. If anyone stumbles upon your transmissions it would be better to continue quietly gaining intel on you, and hope you say something juicy. rather than revealing yourself early and spoiling the fun. Let the bird skwawk!
I’ve been using mine uv5r for almost a year now on ham and gmrs and on repeaters with out a license for almost two years . I don’t think the fcc really cares.
Inland Revenu agent for 22 years here, you didn't pay your taxes due on the licence you don't have, your going to jail for an extra 22 years. And that's after you finish the FCC sentence.
As a licensed ham, as well as a licensed gmrs user, I’ve never seen anyone get into too much of a twist HOWEVER, idiots do from time to time wind up on public safety frequencies and that does create a problem.
i just watched a talk given by the FCC to HAMS and GMRS folk. Only cases that are sent to the justice department are published on the FCC website. They had to stop publishing all actions.
@@TheNotaRubicon the video is on youtube '21 group fcc arrl luncheon' Laura Smith is FCC Special Counsel that mentioned it - started about 5 years ago - she sounded like shes be happy to respond to an email in that video the question is at 1h30m27s
What I heard was that warning letters were not usually published but the official Notice of Apparent liability (NAL) is indeed still published and the FCC only goes to the justice department for collection of a fine after NAL has been through all the proper steps and the offender has refused to pay. The justice department is the step where you go in front of a federal judge and you have your day in court. I also heard them say that if they need to kick your door down they will bring along a US marshall to do it since they are not a law enforcement agency. (just like Rand always says - 'rules not laws')
@@ZiggleFingers She said they only publish final actions as of the past 5 or 6 years. They used to publish everything before that with personal info blacked out. It will probably not make a large difference in the count over current history if you go back 20 years or so. My interpretation of what she said is that the only letters that go to justice are the ones where the person refuses to pay or comply. I am assuming a non-final action would be if they knock on your door or send a letter and you fix the problem right away, they would drop the issue. More to the point, no one from the FCC is going to show up just because you are using a Baofeng on GMRS. They are busy handling more important issues.
I have two UV-5Rs but only transmit on Ham Freq$. I have two GMRS handhelds as well as my GMRS license beccame effective July 31. Greetings from Missoula, MT Randy
I use to use it since i bought not knowing about license im not from america even tho i yelled at all channels exist in uv5r and it’s been 3 years and it’s on the shelf
It's pretty stupid that the FCC doesn't offer a "simple" license that just allows one to talk to another without needing to take a REDICULOUS exam containing questions that you'll never ever need to know. Some say just get a gmrs radio. Problem is, nobody in my area is on gmrs, they are all hams.
So what you’re saying is, I should probably just get my gmrs license and a few BAOFENG UV-5G Plus GMRS? It would distribute them to family to have on hand in case of a natural disaster or you know, Civil War. I was thinking of getting the RockyTalkie gmrs too. They look like a solid build and I’m not trying to get too far into the rabbit hole of programming radios.
A volunteer county emergency radio group that I am familiar with (no names) supported a police training exercise a while back. They had a lot of volunteers, but many of them did not have any type of license. The group purchased a bucket full of UV-5Rs and programmed them to one of the MURS channels and distributed them among the volunteers. Everything when smoothly until the FCC SWAT team arrived. OK, no FCC SWAT team and the exercise did go smoothly. NO ONE CARED. I am a ham and I personally have no issue with programming the UV-5R for use on any legitimate civilian frequency that one is authorized to use. 😇
If you hold the radio by the rubber duck antenna, you can probably press the talk trigger all you want! You might even be able to do it with the radio turned on!
So just use MURS frequencies, don't be a dick to people, enjoy your time with friends and you're going to be fine. Thanks!! I love the UV-5R design compared to Wal-Mart or any other walkie talkie. Shame on the FCC to not allow this just for regular use sadly.
The best advice you gave is "dont be a dickhead". We have several of these radios. easy to program. We used to use ours as scanners as well to listen to the Police. with the TX disabled. Now the Police have Motorola Digital encrypted radios. 😞 Still for $50.00 they cant be beaten. Yeah shure a Icom radio or a Yasu would be nice, but working with transport and trucks stuff happens and if you damage a $50.00 Radio, thats bad luck but you dont have to start crying about it. Regards Peter W. Australia.
It seems to me that the preponderance of evidence points to 'sad hams' being dick heads more so than a random unlicensed Boof-Wang UV5R user. Purely anecdotal, of course.
If you do not have a ham license, and you key up on a ham frequency.....hams within 50 miles will swarm you like hornets and make sure you never join the hobby legitimately.
some of us won't even care (I've been a ham since 94 and honestly don't give a crap.. it's a HOBBY and the FCC doesn't pay me, so why should I do their job for them?).
Luckily, I have bug spray. But, my dinky Boof-Wang MP-31 doesn't have many fars. It appears people using GMRS radios have better things to do than police those frequencies.
Define "use." I'm pretty sure I can use a Baofeng UV-5R as a paperweight and the FCC wouldn't be able to do anything about it. And I'm not a licenced ham radio operator.
I was using my boofwang this morning at state park and a puffy old pink guy brought me a KrakenSDR, $32 bucks, & a half cup of Mack Donalds coffee. Elmers are nice!
Good day my fellow boofwangers, radio enthusiasts and sad hams. I hope everyone is having a good week and their spurious emissions are minimal but fruitful.
Remember there are no such thing as a good citizen. Only citizens that follow laws and those who don't. Better to ask forgiveness than permission. Love the videos!!
I have a bunch of Bowfang radios,, and they are all programmed to GMRS, MURS, Marine, and Ham frequencies... 5R, 15RM, 17 pro gps, 21, and I am going to add a bunch more, and I intend to broadcast on GMRS and MURS, FRS frequencies....
I am in Canada. I dropped my UV5R and it went off! Will Industry Canada hunt me down? My handle is so slippery, long and black. It does flop around like yours does. Is there a video about how to not drop my boa fang? Maybe a wrist strap will help.
Randy, or maybe someone else can answer this question? Oh and I'm a happy ham with an Extra Class license. Anyway, I recently got my GMRS license and I'm about to buy a few radios (2 mobile and 1 walkie). If my understanding is correct both my wife and I can use the call sign I was assigned. What if she is in her vehicle and I in mine and we talk on the rigs? Is that still OK to use the same call sign to identify, or do I need to pay another $35 buck-a-rools, or does the FCC's even care?
There was an incident that happened maybe 8 years ago in a Township in New Jersey with children fooling around with Baofeng walkie talkies. According to the Fire Chief and EMS Director, those children were using Public Safety frequencies. However, in actual News Report from NBC Channel 10, the reporter showed one of the radios with Amateur Radio frequency and not Public Safety. Anyway, I forgot what actually as far as punishment, but I'm sure it wasn't severe, Maybe Mom and Dad took the heat since I assume those kids didn't know or was fully aware of what they were doing. BTW. Excellent Video Mr. Randy! I sure one day if you venture to the Keystone or Garden State, I will meet you in person.
Could have been causing spurious emissions on EMS frequencies while transmitting on a ham frequency. Some of the boofwangs do that. Or maybe the fire chief was a sad ham, lol
@@levisorenson7873 You're probably right on spurious emissions on those radios. Whether it was spurious emissions or not, those parents of children shouldn't have allowed their children to use the radios, especially when neither are license hams, and the radios aren't certified for FRS or GMRS, so they couldn't legally use them anyway..

licence free since 1974😛
Hell yea fuck the FCC, should be able to use the radio
A true rebel! 😂 👍🏻
what would be awesome, is if with all the baofeng radios, youd mention whether or not the batteries are interchangeable... thats all... love your videos and your humor...
Thanks for your time making and posting this. It was very helpful. Not a radio guy and getting less techy by the day. I do have an appreciation for sarcasm punctuated with long pauses. It adds some humor to an otherwise "confuckulated" topic.
Just got a set of new boofwangs a couple days ago. I unlocked both right out of the box. Works on GMRS frequencies just fine
'''RULES ARE MADE TO BROKEN'''
In the lyrics of Judas Priest “BREAKING THE LAW! BREAKING THE LAW”
Randy is the rebel we didn't know we needed.
Out here everybody and their mothers uses the uv5r for gmrs ! we do what ever the f**k we want 🤪
FCC Agent for 22 years here. We opened a case on you. You're going to prison pal. FOREVER.
Inland Revenu agent for 22 years here, you didn't pay your taxes due on the licence you don't have, your going to jail for an extra 22 years. And that's after you finish the FCC sentence.

It appears that 'sad hams' are more concerned about such violations than the FCCs. 🤷
Just the facts sir, just the facts. I have 6 of them and my whole family uses them.
My unlocked UV-5R seems to work just fine. It has never once asked me about a license before "broadcasting" into the wild blue yonder.
😀😁😂🤣😃
As a licensed ham, as well as a licensed gmrs user, I’ve never seen anyone get into too much of a twist HOWEVER, idiots do from time to time wind up on public safety frequencies and that does create a problem.
i just watched a talk given by the FCC to HAMS and GMRS folk. Only cases that are sent to the justice department are published on the FCC website. They had to stop publishing all actions.
Do you have a date when that went into effect? Because they still publish actions as of not very long ago.
I've heard some hams transmitting even though their license has expired. 200,000 active ham licenses in California.
I didn't know you should hold your baofeng by the antenna! Lol.
I have two UV-5Rs but only transmit on Ham Freq$. I have two GMRS handhelds as well as my GMRS license beccame effective July 31. Greetings from Missoula, MT Randy
The FCC won't let me be · Or let me be me, so let me see.
They tried to shut me down I'm going to flee!
But it would feel so empty without pirate-me?
You should sent that to Taylor Swift. She might make it into a song for you.
I renewed my Amateur Radio License & GMRS was granted & effective July 31st. I use an Ailunce HA1G radio.
I really appreciate the explanation, ive been a cb user for many years , but it seems gmrs is being used more and more in offroading
Why do you have a picture of the Joker singing in the background
That's the 'Giggler'. Her sidekick is, 'The Snitch'.
Are they 'sad hams'? 🤔
.."legitimate civilian frequency that one is authorized to use."
Sad Ham identified. 😕
Pretty sure thats not one of the POINTER SISTERS on the SCREEN
It's the Pointed Head Sister.
Kamabla
Missing The Point...Sister....
Old CamelToe has a firm grip on that Mic with Mouth wide open,... I may just change my Vote ;)
Lol.. you noticed that too? 😎
These videos are fantastic
The best advice you gave is "dont be a dickhead". We have several of these radios. easy to program. We used to use ours as scanners as well to listen to the Police. with the TX disabled. Now the Police have Motorola Digital encrypted radios. 😞
Still for $50.00 they cant be beaten.
@@sorphin You know what I mean though
@@sorphin Good point.
Luckily, I have bug spray. But, my dinky Boof-Wang MP-31 doesn't have many fars. It appears people using GMRS radios have better things to do than police those frequencies.
I did unlock and broke license for unapproved using one of these radios. FCC didn't come in to play 🚨.
Define "use." I'm pretty sure I can use a Baofeng UV-5R as a paperweight and the FCC wouldn't be able to do anything about it. And I'm not a licenced ham radio operator.
I see the Hyena is in the background 🙂
Funky cameltoe.
Well, those Canadian Mounted FCCs can come and get me.
Screw all regulations. Wolverine's! 😈
What about the um, insidious emissions on the harmonicas?
I have my license, but you don't need no government paper.
FYI since ruling of Chevron deference I do NOT think the FCC has much enforcement power. And FCC rules maybe in play also, congress makes the laws.
I come here for the background music! Where is it? What happened?
Yes, the technology exists to know if someone is using a UV-5R. And I bet nobody at the FCC would bother to employ it.
Im pushin my ptt on my buffwang right now!!
I am in Canada. I dropped my UV5R and it went off! Will Industry Canada hunt me down? My handle is so slippery, long and black. It does flop around like yours does. Is there a video about how to not drop my boa fang? Maybe a wrist strap will help.
So how do i find frequencies that are legal to use or unused by any companies?
Apply for an FCC license
Hey what's up with heels up harris in the background is that your dart board???
My giggle hurts! Ouchie
He hit that PTT button and I passed out and woke up in my own urine puddle. So sad.
Did it smell like bacon? 🤔
PLEASE PUT OUT ANOTHER VIDEO ‼️‼️‼️❤️❤️❤️
The pic in your background made me throw up in my mouth!!!
Your GMRS license covers your entire family, irregardless of where you are or what gmrs radios you use. You simply both use the same callsign.
I would NEVER pay the US Government for something that is FREE and was there before LIFE just like AIR !!!
