With sealants, some will also tend to squeeze IN as well as out, of course, you can't clean the stuff on the inside. One thing I learned to do early on from one of these street-rod building ancient guru's is to add a bit of a wave, like a sin-wave, to your sealant bead. Maybe it's a bit of a superstition but he proclaimed that he never had a seal issue from doing it this way, and from a physics standard you will have slightly more material per linear inch.
+ReddmanDGZ I don't think that is a good idea. You want to be centered between both clamping surfaces. I take apart many brand new transmissions, because now its the only way to get a complete set of parts to build one of my modded Jag 5 speeds. There is always sealant overhanging the inside. I hate that. I prefer anaerobic sealants because the viscosity allows for a smaller bead with no overhang. I have never had leaks on any of the 5000 plus transmissions I have built.

I'm a big fan of all your videos on performance T5 but I'm curious how do you get rid of all the excess sealant on the inside of the transmission there's no way to wipe it off (like the outside). And on some of your tear down videos you say that can be harmful to a transmission or the cause of its failure. I'm not talking about type of sealant. Just the extreme excess that's going to be on the inside like it was on the outside. I like the idea of the anaerobic gel because it would just break down in the fluid and not cause any damage.
hello friend I saw one of your videos where you had a basic t5 transmission with straight cut gears I want to know if that is a kit to build such a transmission and what part number does that kit have I want to build a t5 racing thanks
Great video. I have to drop the T5 in my Jeep as my front seal is leaking. I'm guessing my rebuilder either damaged the seal when installing, didn't replace it at all or didn't use sealer when reinstalling.
I actually got the rtv in my oil pan hole n it busted the bottom out of the hole I didn’t notice till I turned my motor on the stand and heard something sound like a bolt hit my oil pan from inside turned out to be the bottom of the hole that went into the motor I haven’t got it back in yet to see if it’s gonna leak or have any other problems 😬
Paul, love the videos. In my 81 cj7 T5, how can I get the input shaft seal out? The seal is flush so didn't see anyplace to grab with a seal puller. So left it in. Is there a little notch there that I did't see? Does one of your other videos show how to? Many thanks!
Hey Paul, can't stop watching! I wish you could rebuild my T5, but I'll have to make do. My T5 lets out a long groan on high RPM shifts (above 3,000 RPM) and won't go into that gear. I have to hold the clutch in for a few seconds and try again. However, changing gears driving gently is no issue. It does this for 1st and 2nd gear, rarely 3rd and 4th. Do you think it is the synchronizer units for each gear causing this? I believe the unit has 250K on it, unsure if it has ever been rebuilt. Any of your advice would be appreciated! I wanted to disassemble my first manual transmission (Tried a TH350 before and had to have the transmission shop put it back together!)
Good vid. The Dynatex products look nice I especially like that pump applicator vs the runny mess you get with loctite/permatex. Do you have a preferred vendor you recommend to source the Dynatex stuff from?
+Chad Ross Thanks. Yes the pump threadlocker has been great because it doesn't run and I can preapply it to bolts on a build much faster. They hit the viscosity right on that design. I also use it to lock sleeves in place. This in general will also reinforce any press fit. www.5speeds.com/cart/index.php?route=product/category&path=66_78 is the link.
+Aji Kurniaji Everyone asks me to make videos of certain transmissions. I don't have any of these transmissions. So I would have to purchase a core as well as all new parts. Right now I don't have the budget to do a video, buy parts, and purchase a unit for free. If a unit comes my way I will do one.
Really like your videos been looking at rebuild kits from the states as there are not many dealers in the uk do you have any links for quality rebuild kits. For a World class Cosworth T5 Thanks from the 🇬🇧
+devonrod Many people insist on using the RTV quick black sealant, which is what the factory did use. I do like the 51813 because it applies easier. In fact the Dynatex version in my opinion flows better with less waste. Its all about cost. Some people refuse to spend more money for anaerobic sealants and will settle on the black stuff. I did this video because I like the aerosol versions, they produce less waste and you don't have to contend with tubes that dry out. Thanks for watching!
+GearBoxVideo In many cases the oil pump screens are rated to take a certain amount of this kind of blockage from the factory, but in performance applications it's vital to avoid that since it may be running at a higher temperature than it's really designed for.
+ReddmanDGZ Remember its not just the screens but the oil galley passages that get blocked. Manual transmissions are way more forgiving than an engines oil system.
Great videos and helping me understand the world class t5 for my 1990 5.0 notchback budget build. Is this book for sale just online or would barnes and noble carry it ? regardless I plan to buy soon
This looks like rebuild with many new parts and sealed very good. :-) Anyhow it is possible that it could break in some circumstances. For example, lubricative is in bad condition, so one has to swop it, before this happens. How long can this T5 Transmission run with the same lubricative, and when it's better to change it earlier?
+J9V3A6 Lubes are dependent on use. There are no dipsticks to check the oil level or condition on any T5. If you are racing , its a good idea to check your lube level and condition before every event. If you are on the street its not uncommon to go 20 to 30 K miles. Most common problem is people ignoring leaks and burning units up. The T5 takes Dextron III / IV fluid which normally looks clear red. So if you are dirty black, you need to change it.
It's perhaps the easiest and best thing to change lubricative. Not only because the gearbox is far above that hop limit. Thank you for this. :-) I've also noticed that the gearbox ist leaking between engine and gearbox at inputshaft! Something like useing the jack, removeing a tire, void the gearbox, do a refill and put all parts back in place should solve this..
I like it. It seems to apply better. Cost is a little cheaper. Since I found Dynatex I no longer use or have a need for Permatex products. Not an endorsement either, nobody gives me anything for free.
I tried searching about this before but could never find any real answer so maybe you have an opinion on it; what happens to excess sealant that squeezes out *into* the gearbox (or engine, or whatever else sealant is being used on). Seems like you'll have an equal amount of sealant squeezing inwards as outwards, so surely there'll eventually be loose sealant circulating in the machinery or the oil. Just curious if that's a non-issue or if it can cause problems. Interesting video either way, thanks!
+Mythricia YES! That is a problem. In engines if the sealant becomes loose in can clog the oil pump screen as well as oil passages. The video at this link: th-cam.com/video/jS18jpucG50/w-d-xo.html shows excess sealant in a transmission. This sealant in this video works well and I try to keep in the middle of the path so it equally goes in both directions.
GearBoxVideo Awesome, thanks for that info, I been wondering about it for a long while. Makes sense with pump filters/screens. Will have to check that video too!
Some fellows I know who run these in their Cobras say they leak at the rear. How to prevent leaking from the rear? Would you look into a new transmission to stem the leak as well?
They shouldn't leak. I've never had an issue. I suspect that if they have an IRS rear the yoke is really not moving and perhaps they should grease the seal before installing the yoke
@@GearBoxVideo Thanks. I did speak to a fellow who lives close to me who said his tremec leaked and he took of the back part and used silicone to seal it. But you show the anaerobic sealant on the trans seal.
@@GearBoxVideo Outstanding! super helpful and convenient! Ordered a full set of lubes and oils, and the prices are great. One-stop-shopping! Would order a Jeep AX15 rebuild kit if you have one!?!
Paul, I have a 1982 Jeep T5 that went to clanking inside after I popped it out of 1st before I had the clutch all the way in. It also is trying to go into other gears (and maybe reverse) with the shifter in 1st and just easing out on the clutch. It did this when I was limping it home. The trans was rebuilt about 11k miles ago by a shop and it did this very thing when it first broke. Could you tell me what you think is the issue, and if it is possible there is a case problem with this transmission? Im worried i'm wasting money trying to salvage this transmission and need your help.
hey paul what do you think about using the solid trans mount on the t-5 and motor solid motor mount, because they say if you use the solid trans mount you have to use the the solid motor mount, what to you think paul good or bad, thanks buddy so much
I dont see any advantage to solid mounts because unless you have a stiff chassis, any twist of the chassis will transmit directly to the case of the 5 speed, and cause it to crack.
hey paul Iam going to rebuild my t-5 with the basic master rebuild kit and billit keys and bronze fork pads, do you think with just the mild street driving maners ocausunaly no drag racing, siting behind a 351w mild build about 390hp 380tq do you think it will last or blow up, and paul what clutch would you use with componation. thanks my friend.
573 is slow curing. So if your building a unit and going to have it up and running in a few hours I would recommend 51813 Permatex. If you basically want an anaerobic sealant 573 is great but I would let it sit a full day.
Hi Paul, the 3/8 brass plug for the neutral safety switch, does it need to have a flare on the end or can an ordinary blanking plug be used ? Thank you.
Hey Paul, What fluid do you recommed for a non world class t5. Autozone sold me STP Automatic Transmission Fluid Mercon V. I have already dumped in the T5. will there be any issues? what do you recommed? THanks!
GearboxVideo love your content. I have a question. I just purchased a 1995 GT has a 5 speed T5 World Class. I had my fluid checked yesterday and my friend said it looks like I might have a leak (he noticed the transfer was a little wet before he pulled the fill plug) When he pulled the full plug he said fluid ran right out so it's full (maybe slightly over filled) could a overfill cause a leak? Also I have noticed a slight whine in 1-3rd gears that you can hear in the video here th-cam.com/video/NIUaRILMwUw/w-d-xo.html ignore the static clinging noise at start. It's not the trans it's because my phone was setting in the ash tray while recording. thanks
Transmissions can leak if overfilled, but the whine you hear is typical of these transmissions when the input shaft and front section gear teeth start to distort. Either from a low oil level at one time or hard use. It is quiet in 4th gear because no gears are used when in direct mode.
GearBoxVideo so been watching some of your videos. how crucial is it to have this repaired? also I'm guessing to correct this you want to replace the input shaft and bearings.
GearBoxVideo so how crucial is it that I should get this repaired? Trying to set a priority for things that need to be done to the car. Also where's the best place to get the new counter gear, input shaft, and bearings?
GearBoxVideo I saw you have rebuild kits, but do you also carry the input shafts? Also how crucial is it to have this repaired so I can prioritize repairs on this car.

Thank you for this. :-) I've also noticed that the gearbox ist leaking between engine and gearbox at inputshaft! Something like useing the jack, removeing a tire, void the gearbox, do a refill and put all parts back in place should solve this..
the thread sealent ur using from dynatex is it better than the one from permatex or loctite?
I like it. It seems to apply better. Cost is a little cheaper. Since I found Dynatex I no longer use or have a need for Permatex products. Not an endorsement either, nobody gives me anything for free.
Did some of the lid screw holes have heli-coils inserted? Were they damaged from a prior reassembly with too much RTV?
+t5montecarlo No, this is a new transmission I took apart,
when will you have manual available? your website list that your out of stock. ..
You can get it on amazon at this link: amzn.to/2i23h3J I won't have it in stock for another week.
Thanks
Hey Paul. Seems like Dynatex 55016 Blue Transmission assembly lube is hard to find these days. Can you make a suggestion for something else?
It is available on my www.5speeds.com/cart store
@@GearBoxVideo Outstanding! super helpful and convenient! Ordered a full set of lubes and oils, and the prices are great. One-stop-shopping! Would order a Jeep AX15 rebuild kit if you have one!?!
I might add the Ax15 kit soon along with the W58 kit
I have a question. Do you have to put lube on the seal of the bearing retainer. If so will Autozone Moly EP grease work?
Just use a regular wheel bearing grease with no moly. You want the oil to wash it out and the moly shouldn't be floating around
What engine do you have and do you have oversize tires? These transmissions will break with any abuse with larger that stock tires
hey paul what do you think about using the solid trans mount on the t-5 and motor solid motor mount, because they say if you use the solid trans mount you have to use the the solid motor mount, what to you think paul good or bad, thanks buddy so much
I dont see any advantage to solid mounts because unless you have a stiff chassis, any twist of the chassis will transmit directly to the case of the 5 speed, and cause it to crack.
hey paul Iam going to rebuild my t-5 with the basic master rebuild kit and billit keys and bronze fork pads, do you think with just the mild street driving maners ocausunaly no drag racing, siting behind a 351w mild build about 390hp 380tq do you think it will last or blow up, and paul what clutch would you use with componation. thanks my friend.
Floor against floor we don't use black paste but Loctite 573
573 is slow curing. So if your building a unit and going to have it up and running in a few hours I would recommend 51813 Permatex. If you basically want an anaerobic sealant 573 is great but I would let it sit a full day.
@@GearBoxVideo 👍🏻
Hi Paul, the 3/8 brass plug for the neutral safety switch, does it need to have a flare on the end or can an ordinary blanking plug be used ? Thank you.
Doesn't need a flare end. It's just the correct thread size.
Thanks again Paul, invaluable information on your videos.
Do you sell upgraded t5 parts and if I try and build it the same as an a5 is it much different
I really don't sell the upgraded gears from G-Force or A5.
I don’t know if you know but if I delete the neutral switch will it affect any thing on my Fox Body mustang?
The switch is normally opened. So the only thing that happens is that you can start the car in any gear.
Hey Paul,
What fluid do you recommed for a non world class t5. Autozone sold me STP Automatic Transmission Fluid Mercon V. I have already dumped in the T5. will there be any issues? what do you recommed?
THanks!
The Mercon is correct for that. Most people think it is gear lube.
Where are u located and can i send u my transmission?
Ahmad Alfailakawi i don't do rebuilds
how much too rebuild my t5 please
I don't do rebuilds
I Really Wish I could Send you My t5 If you ever Slow up with Work PLEASE let me know !!!! Chris Capobianco
why can't I just send my t5 to you sounds like you are north of the mason Dixon line. so might be to expensive for shipping.
You would probably need a new input and countergear. Probably go trhough the whole trans since it either ran low on oil or fatiqued the gear teeth
I know I had asked you If you Could rebuild My T5 and you said you Dont anymore . Do you sell T5s ? Im really looking for someone that knows what they are doing so it stays Together and doesnt grind Etc Everyone up here in philly Rushes and rips you Off
I really don't sell t5 transmissions is that are rebuilt or even new. There is a new video on rebuilding them I just finished that will be up on Ericthecarguy's channel
Synchromesh or ATF in the T5?!
Synchromesh fluid from Pennzoil works well as does Dexron IV or V. Royal Purple SynchroMax is my favorite.
Synchromax won't hurt any of the blocker rings will it? I've heard that some the synthetics especially the Synthetic ATFs clean the inside of the trans too well and strip the rings? any truth to this?
No. Synchromax is designed to work with composite rings. I use it in all my endurance t5 applications.
I'd fire that lady. Anybody can push buttons it takes a man to build a T5
i used anaerobic sealant on the top cover will that work? i thought you said in a video it would. thankyou
Yes it works fine.
thankyou. just bought your shim kit
Thanks for your support!
