I noticed that you still have that Holden badge on your toolbox I sent you a few years ago, I just want to say, thank you Eric, for not throwing it out :) A simple thing like that has made my day :)
EricTheCarGuy I'm glad you like it dude! I'll try to get my hands on a few more Aussie car badges and send them over. I currently have two R31 Skyline badges (ones on my car) from the Aus delivered version, if I can get a third i'll send it over
+EricTheCarGuy If you'd like one, I can send you a Holden key ring , minus key , I may need them obviously, Edit- Holden badge in post ( well tomorrow when Post Office opens ) , plus something else I thought you'd like too
It doesn't matter what make of vehicle you like or hate, after watching the entire video, Paul is obviously very skilled at what he does and has a wealth of knowledge that I respect. Great job on the tear down and explanation of what things are and why they broke.
I do know the company that makes their gears and have installed a few sets. Pretty much also like the G-Force sets. These gearsets still break and in my opinion not worth the effort or money. Just upgrade to a TKO or T56.
+GearBoxVideo Thanks for the info. Been debating with myself on either an astro a5, t56 or a 4r70. Leaning towards the 4r70. Going behind a turbo 351w.
I doubt I will EVER rebuild a transmission but after just a few minutes watching Paul's channel and I'm hooked. You can learn things that apply to tons of other types of machinery so win win!!
It's almost artistry when you watch someone work like this know really knows what they are doing. Never messed with any transmission work because all of the pieces intimidate me with fears of missing a shim or some other item. Love the educational value you have shared with us Eric. Thank you for the video.
Paul is the best Ive seen, I learn something new every time i watch this rebuild. Thanks Paul and Eric ! Whats impressive is how Paul never has to look at any diagrams, and always gets it right.
Paul is a 5 speed whisperer. He talks to 5 speeds and they listen. 4 and 3 speeds follow him like a puppy. If I ever need a transmission rebuilt it is going to Paul no questions and I will happily pay whatever he charges.
Eric,You have given me so much confidence over the years to work on my own cars with ease.I have solved so many issues with my vehicles and got them back on the road with little expense by not taking it to the garage as money has been tight most of the time`and this is when the car decides to pack up`the car is so needed in my life and it effects me greatly when it goes wrong, but thanks to you I`ve managed to get the vehicles back on the road following your advice. The thing about your vids you give so many routs to check be for jumping the gun and most of the time I solve the problem.I had never thought to thank you be for` Ive always took your advice for granted so. Thank you for keeping me out of debt and learning me about vehicle fixes a big thumbs up to you and all.
Glad to see Paul on this job!. I recently ordered a Hurst Comp Plus shifter from Paul with his personal modifications. He did an awsome job and the shifter works perfect. Most important he was honest with me and did what he said he was going to do. That is worth everthing in today's world.
Great video. Thank you. 7 months ago I, for the first time, became a Fox Body Mustang GUY. It's my project/toy car. It has the T-5. I am not having any problems with it. But I have always been a ,visual inside my head, person that when I am, say, shifting the gear. I see inside my head everything mechanical going on inside the trans. So i like to really see what's inside of anything mechanical to help me with that visual. I know it sounds crazy. It is how I have always been. I am just always engineering things inside my head. Hey, it works for me. LOL. Also, I am sure one day I will rebuild my T-5. I bought this car to flog the heck out of it at the autocross and canyons up north. This was a real treat. I have been paying attention to the Fairmont build. Very cool project. I have always like those cars. Even back in the day when there was NOTHING cool about a Fairmont. I always thought they were. Looking forward to seeing more of the progression on this car.
Buying the book! And I think I'll pick up Paul Cangiolosi's book on the Muncie 4-speed too, while I'm at it. His mastery of the subject is mind blowing. He never seems to hesitate... Amazing.
Paul knows these things very well. Good to see somebody care that much about what they are doing. I love when you can find people working with their passion.
Its awesome to see someone talk about a topic or subject that they know like the back of their hand. When Paul talks about the transmission and all the little details, hea really makes sure that he says everything he knows about it in order empart this information to other people. Cant go wrong with listening to this man. I learned so much just from watching this.
Isn't he awesome? I've never met Paul personally but I tell you I like him a lot, First off I fell in love with my first Muncie 4 speed, then to find a really special individual like Paul that's as passionate and knowledgeable about something I really like gets my attention, I'd be honored to do a rebuild with him.
👍🏽 Fantastic channel-as a mechanical engineer who has worked in the auto sector and once contemplating a sales job for specialized gear design software .This is hugely educational. Thank you Paul & Eric.
Eric thank you for posting this video. You and Paul did an excellent job of explaining everything. Because you have this video up I am going to save myself $800 and rebuild my own T5. Thank you.
I'm an aging mechanic and will probably never rebuild a T-5, but I sure enjoyed watching the tear down and Paul's commentary on what has caused the various problems with this tranny.
i didn't even realize the video was an hour long, it was so entertaining i sat here and watched start to finish. as a DIY'er myself videos like these are gold. Great info and now i know were to get a kit shall i need to rebuild a t5.
Paul is an awesome guy. He knows what hes talking about and isn't an Ass about it. That's a great trait that is lost nowadays. Paul will share his knowledge instead of asking you for a fistwad of cash for it. Seriously, hope to hear more from Paul.
I'm so glad I took the risk on this video! I thought it'd be a little over my head, but his explanations were super easy to follow and I really appreciated the occasional questions that helped clear up a few questions for me . Thanks a *LOT* guys!!!
I barely even wrench on my own stuff anymore and I can't get enough of these videos. While watching I can't help but think of the engineering, testing and redesigning of parts and the whole transmission and how it is but just one 'part' of the whole car. Amazing!
Still watching but paused at 20 min and some change so awesome to see you guys so confident in what you do and be good at it Paul fixes and takes apart the transmission like it's nothing and Eric can fix a car like nothing.Compared to me with little experience I'd be lost but not too lost since watching these videos a few years back.Somewhere here in Western,Massachusetts I have relatives that own a Transmission rebuilding shop (or So I was told) I'd like to get into that a little bit,as confusing and difficult as it looks I like it.
Wow, Paul knows his stuff! I do feel like he would look just as comfortable and professional in the kitchen of a very expensive restaurant. He's got that 'head chef' look about him 😋
Great video here, it's one thing to look at a diagram and kind of assume how everything works but it's something else to have someone so qualified run you through it. Paul has a great video presence in that he not only shows everything and describes what it does as well as shortcuts for disassembly but also throws in little bits of the history and does so in a confident manner. Great video, thanks guys.
Loved this video. Yes, admitted it's above my head, but I sat here captivated the entire time & learning throughout the process. Thanks so much for these videos.
Paul Cangialosi is a stone cold expert. That this guy knows what he's doing is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer. In short he has his shit together.
One of the things I like about these two videos is that Paul goes a little further than other videos about showing what is happening in the disassembly and more about his thoughts on why things are the way they are. He talks about what makes a bad part- a bad part as if the watcher has little experience building the transmission- which is exactly the case for me. I have now done four transmissions-all different- but go into them now with confidence that I never had before and owe it all to Paul’s videos. He doesn’t teach it like the viewer is a dunce; he teaches it like the viewer has a vested interest in the outcome. That makes these invaluable to me. I tore apart a T5 last night knowing that if I got into trouble, he would be there, and I would have full access to the information. Thank you for that-
This has to be one of my favorite videos of all time. I wish I could have been there to ask questions too. I tried to read up on my T-56 but then ended up sending it to TIck Performance. When I do my build I am going back to T-5.
I lost track of how many times I heard Paul say "lot of people don't realize" after like 39 times lol. Like a lot of people don't realize this guy knows a lot about what he's doing, and likes to point out that others don't lol. I say this with humor. Great video though. I really do enjoy the content from both of these guy's channels. Good information, and absolutely great instruction on the "how to", and how to do it the right way. Love it
Man, I love your videos. Thanks to you I was able to learn enough and get brave enough to buy my dream car. She's a 1964 Chrysler Imperial. I've already fixed a bad fuel system and tuned up the Carb. Thanks a million!
You guys really did an awesome first part one this one. Really in detail with all the right shots and sooo much stuff that you'd either miss or have no way to learning otherwise.
I don't think I could ever get that thing back together after taking it apart, even with diagrams and laying it out as it came apart... Respect for people like Paul with the skills for that.
Wow, I have a lot of respect for the transmutation mechanic.... This man is a master of trans. I'll just stick to the simple things and send my trans out... Thanks for the video
It's always great see someone do something like this when the obviously know exactly what they are doing. I'll never use that info, but some good general principles.
GREAT video Eric. I'll never do this work, but to see it being done gives a whole new perspective on why the costs to do the work are so high! Thanks again!!!
I want to congratulate you on this video. You have many grate videos, but this one is one of the best I have seen on transmissions. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the videos Eric. Your enthusiasm and commitment to proper car repair has inspired me. I may not be a mechanic yet, but I do work on cars electrical systems professionally every day and I follow your advice and work ethic every day to do my job.
This is great you guys. I’ve got my trans half torn apart right now because of this guide. Never would have attempted this without your help, so thanks so much.
+BiffBallbag Funny most of my gear head friends ( and I know everyone in the business ) are not Italian. I did grow up in the South Bronx and am 100% Sicilian. Good call. However we've all migrated to south Florida now.
+GearBoxVideo I used gear head as I know its the right nomenclature for a man of your talents. My family owned brooklyn and hempstead harley davidson, we're Italian's ourselves. I grew up around many NY Italian motorcycle mechanics and craftsmen, you remind me of many, many dear friends. I've migrated as far south as Atlanta, still in the motorcycle industry. IS it true that the Jew's invented south florida?
Paul Cangialosi's knowledge on T-5 transmissions is truly impressive. Eric, it seems that you probably asked one of the best person mechanic (if not the best) in America to rebuild your transmission. Now, you will have a better transmission than your engine, unless you do the same to the engine... :-)
Good to see someone with the knowledge pointing out the fine details of the T-5. Hope he is passing along that Knowledge to the next generation. Transmissions are the only thing I won't touch. Leave it to the pro.
Great video which was long time demanding. It feels so excellent when doing the gearbox overhauling job with the subject specialist! Also it would be a very nice idea to do overhauling on front wheel drive T5 and assembly and adjustment of differential. Will be waiting for next parts.
+Brian Lau I try to answer comments when I have time. There's just too many to answer them all, but I like to respond to as many 'legitimate' questions as I can. Happy New Year.
Thanks so much for this video Eric im currently rebuilding the t5 in my foxbody and have Pauls book was very shocked to see him and it on your show! Can't wait for part 2
yu are alwys the best teacher.hav been followin yur show for sometime..yu hav taught me n encouraged me more.since m doing automotive wiring n mechanics..I lov it.I lov cars too
TH-cam algorithm brought me back to this video, watched it when you put it out originally. I have 2 T5s. One out of a Mustang GT and another out of an S10 S10 Chevrolet pickup. I'll be using the GT case and gears and the S10 main shaft and tail shaft housing for a 1965 Falcon Ranchero.
Paul a great source of information and I learned a lot but then there are several things I normally don't tare into one is wiring and the other is transmissions but wow I really learned a lot thank you so much ......
Absolutely a great video, even if you've done these before it's always possible to learn something new and Paul does a great job showing us his experienced way to do it.. Please keep this kind of info coming.
Well, it looks like my evening is going to be well spent, I have a T5 on the bench with various bits removed and others in soaking to get the crud off, had a look at Paul's teardown video and it saved my ass and now I am waiting on parts so will be watching this series to do it right when they arrive.
Great vid! Waiting for #2. You guys together is a new one, great! Not only very informative and full of tips, but entertaining as well! Being into classic Volvos T-5 is not my forté, but much is "universal". Thanx for putting time and effort into this!
Hi Paul, you helped me with some excellent wisdom in your forum a number of years ago; thank you again. I haven't rebuilt 1000s of T5s, but perhaps 10s. I know hindsight is 20/20, but you keep on referring to 5th gear as reverse (reverse is inside like 3- and 4-speed Saginaws). I don't know whether you make a corrective comment later on, or will make the comment in part 2. Also, it isn't necessary to remove the roll pin from the 5th gear fork, unless you are replacing the fork. The fork and rod can be removed along with 5th gear, and then reassembled as a unit. This trick saves a step and prevents possible damage to the fork and/or rod...but you probably knew it already!
+t5montecarlo Pay attention to what I'm saying. "Reverse Brake Cone". This particular T5 has a synchro reverse which is part of the 5th speed synchro assembly. You will also not be able to rotate the rail leaving it pinned to the fork. You can do it with a struggle, but the struggle is not worth the time spent when you can drop the pin. Reverse brake systems are a little different than standard systems which allow you to remove the fork still pinned to the rail. When I build a T5 I trial fit every component including the fork to the 5th assembly because sometimes I've seen these forks bend. So it is necessary and very important. You should polish the rails and trial fit the rail by itself in the case to make sure its nice and free. I don't take short cuts.
+GearBoxVideo Sorry for the misunderstanding, Paul. It has been 20 years since I worked on a WC T5. I see the brass cone on the outside of 5th gear; I haven't seen one of those before. I would like to learn more about that feature of the T5. Do you know of a good resource to learn more about the reverse brake cone on a T5? Was it just a feature used by some Ford models?
What an awesome video, Paul certainly knows his stuff. Very cool to see a master at work and how effortlessly he can do this job. The Fairmont project is coming together!
First off, Paul You have a double in Mexico. Let me know if you want to see him. Second I have to drink a full litter of corona especial to understand the entire video. But I did it. Love the video. Third: Thanks so much for sharing the information, am sure more than one shop it is mad for doing this video. I learn more in this video today than what I learn in the last 20 years of my life. Keep doing that great work, if you ever come to Mexico let me know. Long life to both of you!
I noticed that you still have that Holden badge on your toolbox I sent you a few years ago, I just want to say, thank you Eric, for not throwing it out :)
A simple thing like that has made my day :)
+Brandon P Are you kidding me? I love that thing. I'd never throw it away. Thank you so much for sending it.
EricTheCarGuy I'm glad you like it dude! I'll try to get my hands on a few more Aussie car badges and send them over. I currently have two R31 Skyline badges (ones on my car) from the Aus delivered version, if I can get a third i'll send it over
+Brandon P
Holden , cool , I drive one of those , Commodore SV6 VZ
+EricTheCarGuy
If you'd like one, I can send you a Holden key ring , minus key , I may need them obviously,
Edit- Holden badge in post ( well tomorrow when Post Office opens ) , plus something else I thought you'd like too
+EricTheCarGuy Just be aware that your tool box will probably rust faster with the Holden badge on it.
It doesn't matter what make of vehicle you like or hate, after watching the entire video, Paul is obviously very skilled at what he does and has a wealth of knowledge that I respect. Great job on the tear down and explanation of what things are and why they broke.
+Doomster9 Thank you.
+GearBoxVideo Do you have any experience with astro performance gear sets or their built t5s?
I do know the company that makes their gears and have installed a few sets. Pretty much also like the G-Force sets. These gearsets still break and in my opinion not worth the effort or money. Just upgrade to a TKO or T56.
+GearBoxVideo Thanks for the info. Been debating with myself on either an astro a5, t56 or a 4r70. Leaning towards the 4r70. Going behind a turbo 351w.
+Doomster9 Yeah, that man really knows his stuff. The amount of knowledge at Eric's workshop with those two guys, is pretty darn impressive.
Among the best videos I’ve ever seen. A true expert, speaking like an expert with no ands, ums, or giggling. AND NO DAMN MUSIC.
Paul is very professional.
I doubt I will EVER rebuild a transmission but after just a few minutes watching Paul's channel and I'm hooked. You can learn things that apply to tons of other types of machinery so win win!!
God I love listening to people who are expert at these sorts of things. Paul is like Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Nothing like watching etcg on my 70in big screen. An hr long video is a perfect way to wake up today.

+wow dude Thanks very much for your comment. It's always great to hear how my work helps people.
Glad to see Paul on this job!. I recently ordered a Hurst Comp Plus shifter from Paul with his personal modifications. He did an awsome job and the shifter works perfect. Most important he was honest with me and did what he said he was going to do. That is worth everthing in today's world.

This is an excellent video Eric, I don't think I've ever seen such a detailed rebuild video of anything.
Starting the new year off right with a 1 hour EricTheCarGuy video. :D
really like these cross-channel presentations - such a lucky day and age to be able to watch these experts at work.
Eric thank you for posting this video. You and Paul did an excellent job of explaining everything. Because you have this video up I am going to save myself $800 and rebuild my own T5. Thank you.

Eric is quite skilled, but I must admit that when i comes to this gearbox, Paul is just incredible! This has been a real pleasure to watch!
This guy is a master. Eric is also very humble and it shows. I like watching these two great techs work together.

*"The purpose of rebuilding it- is to **_rebuild_** it..."* (Eric tilts head, awkward pause, blank stare) *Yogi Berra-logic*

Yogi for sure right there

this dude is a t5 magician. he makes EVERY LITTLE PART LOOK SO EASY
This is great you guys. I’ve got my trans half torn apart right now because of this guide. Never would have attempted this without your help, so thanks so much.
By the way, I ordered Paul’s book 👍🏻
@@curtisjohnson944 Thanks a bunch!
That was the best video from Eric I've seen. Really informative and detailed, thanks. Awesome stuff.
Bumped into this video as it was sugested, nice to see he was teaching you something and you were teaching him something. (plastic tool)
Thanks for making this video. I've been putting off rebuilding my T5 for years. Just baby the 1-2 shift.
Ah,learning you are Eric..That's awesome that he's cool enough to not mind help on his show,it's just transmission is a whole other trade
Could this guy be any more of a stereotypical Italian NY'er gear head?! I fuckin love him! Makes me miss home

+BiffBallbag South Florida IS offically the promised land.
I loved the moments where he complimented Eric's tools. Warmed my heart. :')
This guy is incredible... wish he lived next door to me ....Great Vid Eric!
A rebuild video for a manual transmission, whaaaaat?
Need to file this under rare instructional artifact in preparation for the next generation.
Damn, I feel like I just got a weeks worth of classes on manual transmissions. Worth. Good Job Eric and Paul!
Had a T5 in my 1988 EA Ford Fairmont Ghia (Australia). Loved it; especially that ratio on 2nd gear.
Great video Eric. Awesome to see a specialist in action! It's nice to see you had something to teach him (the plastic rotary disc) as well :)
Paul Cangialosi's knowledge on T-5 transmissions is truly impressive. Eric, it seems that you probably asked one of the best person mechanic (if not the best) in America to rebuild your transmission. Now, you will have a better transmission than your engine, unless you do the same to the engine... :-)
He's so fluid. Wicked fast, wicked competent.
This is the best video ever on Transmissions it definitely showed me that I need to take my transmission to a professional
The best ETCG video yet, can't wait for the assembly.
Good to see someone with the knowledge pointing out the fine details of the T-5. Hope he is passing along that Knowledge to the next generation. Transmissions are the only thing I won't touch. Leave it to the pro.
+ram dodge truck Passing on the information is kinda the point of this video. :)
I just say thank you so much for nice and clear tutorial and people can learn a lot from you guys Eric and Paul.
Great video which was long time demanding. It feels so excellent when doing the gearbox overhauling job with the subject specialist! Also it would be a very nice idea to do overhauling on front wheel drive T5 and assembly and adjustment of differential. Will be waiting for next parts.
AWESOME !!!! hope this means its time to start building the Fairmont , crossing my fingers .
+Brian Lau Well, this transmission IS going in the Fairmont.
+Brian Lau This will also keep you up to date. www.ericthecarguy.com/blog/1437-january-2016-newsletter
thanks , lol and I'm surprised you answered me. its pretty great !
+Brian Lau I try to answer comments when I have time. There's just too many to answer them all, but I like to respond to as many 'legitimate' questions as I can. Happy New Year.
The ASMR of transmission rebuilds.
Thanks so much for this video Eric im currently rebuilding the t5 in my foxbody and have Pauls book was very shocked to see him and it on your show! Can't wait for part 2
Paul is the top guy when it comes to transmissions!
Wow, a real tech that explains as he works, most guys just do without the I sites. Good job guys.
yu are alwys the best teacher.hav been followin yur show for sometime..yu hav taught me n encouraged me more.since m doing automotive wiring n mechanics..I lov it.I lov cars too
English. English please
Awesome watching someone work on something that they clearly have an exhaustive knowledge of. Great video.
Always great to see a Master at work! (CarGuy himself not to shabby either). Thanks guys!
thank you for making this series of vids on the T5. Ive watched them over and over again.
Absolutely a great video, even if you've done these before it's always possible to learn something new and Paul does a great job showing us his experienced way to do it.. Please keep this kind of info coming.
Well, it looks like my evening is going to be well spent, I have a T5 on the bench with various bits removed and others in soaking to get the crud off, had a look at Paul's teardown video and it saved my ass and now I am waiting on parts so will be watching this series to do it right when they arrive.
this guy knows his way around this gearbox, love it.
Can I just say - HOLY CRAP - Nothing like watching a master at work.
Great vid! Waiting for #2. You guys together is a new one, great! Not only very informative and full of tips, but entertaining as well!
Being into classic Volvos T-5 is not my forté, but much is "universal". Thanx for putting time and effort into this!
wow!! this guy really knows his stuff...you guys should do a automatic rebuild. ive always admired transmission guys its a whole different animal.
This is such a quality video with such great detail, very educational. It deserves a million views!!!
What a nice, competent guy. Looking forward to part 2 guys.
All that info is in my book. It was just an option used by Ford for a short number of years.
Always great to see a professional with a mastery of the subject
Thanks
Hell yeah. It's an Hour of Power video!!!!!!!!!
What an awesome video, Paul certainly knows his stuff. Very cool to see a master at work and how effortlessly he can do this job. The Fairmont project is coming together!
Awesome Eric, you and Paul make it look so easy.
Part of my family is in Mexico .... Xalapa
