Your videos are excellent. I have a 1990 Mustang and the T5 is in need of repair. It shifts hard from 1st to second if the revs are not perfect and shifting down from 4th to 3rd is tricky also. Was thinking of buying a used transmission because I have no experience rebuilding them at all only engine work, a few clutches, diffs, etc. Giving a step by step tear down, rebuild, and getting to watch how you go the extra mile is outstanding. I will be buying your book on manual transmissions and a full rebuild kit with gears. Thanks for the information.

Unfortunately this is what you get many times on ebay. People who skip steps to make a fast buck. When it comes to transmissions you have to find someone reputable and not just go for the cheap unit. I don't know about everyone else but I only want to install one once. I also want it to work the way it's suppose to. Smooth shifting.

In short, you were sold a re-assembled *used* transmission with a few badly-prepared new(ish) parts. Classic parts bin special.
That is why if I can`t afford or don`t no of a reputable builder I do it myself.

@@GearBoxVideo G'day Paul and greetings from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺🦘 mate 👍, just would like to say your video, first time I've seen you or watched one of your video's and shall checking out your others for sure though you are a true blue legend 🤘 Paul and straight shooter with a great talent and a excellent tradesmen with a powerhouse of professionalism, I have a T-5 box in my shed , was my brother's big story I'll spare the details though I just lost my dad in December and now getting rid of everything like this T-5 and a roadtrain of different car parts and a few cars etc lol, so I'll cut to the chase , I'm an engine builder/ automotive engine reconditioner/rebuilder by trade , from the every day Joe's car to get to work to Street machines, circuit racers , bike's, circuit and drag bikes and offcourse my favourite is drag racing so super street to ol Keith Black Nitro rails , but I've been out of the loop for some time , medical, stage 4 liver disease though I shouldn't be here I am, not going anywhere soon apart from selling up here and my 🐕 Buddy and I coming to your beautiful country to live , my life long dream since I was a kid, dad's fault and his stories from being in the USA 🇺🇸🦅 in the late 60's to 1970/71, so again I'll get to the point,lol, so I'm not to clued in with the price of boxes and being away from the loop of cars and all related it's been hard to work out a fair price on selling for a decent price and like you saying being burnt oh I understand especially I got alot less on a few things I've sold not knowing the correct pricing and researching gives me not a solid idea as you mentioned about different prices on something can be all over the Shop, so last bit quickly, I rang a old auto transmission bloke my engine shop did work for in the 90's and he put me onto this manual transmission specialist builder, I heard a few months back from this other gearbox shop I could get between $450 to $650, so I said to this guy I just want say$400 , he was yeah I have no problem, but I'll take it to my shop and tear it down to check it all like your video here you did and if it's got issue on gears etc it's worthless but all good I have $400 bucks but he said, and btw this guy is a straight shooter and decent guy as far as I can tell so no worries, but he said I'll make a bit off of it when I give it a quick service etc , so I said yeah cool so you'll make , I thought he'll say $700 to $ 800 odd, he said he make ,$ 1200 to $1250, my heart ❤️ dropped, lololl, but this was a few days back and now watching your video I think I just might tear it down myself , look at a few more of your vids do all the right stuff with inspection to cleaning to all you mentioned and rebuild it and sell it myself with a slightly higher price than $400, 🤣😁👍, so what do you think Paul? , Plus I have the trade of all you display and recommend eg , being clean to deburrinng, fit parts correct and buying not Chinese crap and all other related areas as it's pretty much the same thing just different smell if you get my drift 😁👍, ok I'll leave that there and again Paul your a bloody legend 🤘 mate and awesome bloke plus great teacher I see for sure 👍 🍻🇺🇸🦅🇦🇺🦘🤝 and I hope you enjoyed my long winded story , explanation etc with my ' Gone with the Wind ' two thousand page novel there 😁🤣👍✌️, you have a great weekend mate and take care now I'll check out more of your superbly made professional auto vids with gearboxes and yes I would like hear from you what you think and no not my long arsed story just what I might do now instead of just accepting$400 🤔👍✌️
thanks for the lesson in video i was unaware of many issues and poor technique/inspection tell tails and my severe lack of knowledge in production/ aftermarket possibilities and faults and that is just a little for this one type of g box the variations are ponderous . quality knowledge examples

@@GearBoxVideo Yep......correct Paul, but it's those tips & tricks you learn over the years that improve the build/design that makes you unique......glad you're passing them on. My brother knows a guy in Syracuse that owns a business who redesigned the Muncie case and added a 5th gear. I remember all my (younger lol) years with the Muncie and was sad when it was retired.........definitely gonna add a manual box on a future build.....Muncie or T5.....

I just bought a used t5 for 200 bucks and 175 shipping. The guy said it had 45 thousand miles on it and the car rotted and rusted away was reason he was parting it out. He took input shaft to ship it. It came missing four input roller bearings but otherwise looks really nice shape never rebuilt. I would stay away from rebuilt trannys new or low miles orgional. Then its not screwed up by someone else. Hopefully it will work out nice with my 1960 ranchero. Thanks for video
Great video! I bought 2 T5's on ebay. The first one had bad Synchronizers and the second one had bad input shaft and bad bearings. Its amazing some of the crap people will put together!
Kevin did you simply replace input shaft? I have a 97 mustang with a t5 im wanting to pull the engine and put a 302 with a e303 cam, twisted wedge pistons and trick flow heads. My only problem is that models input shaft is larger than previous t5’s which won’t work with a 302 so I’ve heard. Just wondering if possible to simply pull and replace with a smaller input shaft. If anyone knows that answer I’d really appreciate it 🤙
Yes it is. I'd you have the 23 tooth long input you can replace it with the shorter earlier one. Tooth counts have to match

I’m not sure if it is a 23 tooth but it is a factory trans for a baseline 97 3.9 liter v6 mustang so I will look that up and see what I can find out. It’s my first project, learning more and more as I go, I appreciate the reply though for real
Basically it's sloppy workmanship, and the preparation is piss poor.
As for parts some are good, and some are just paper weights.
I build alot of high end equipment of all kinds, I believe you do it right or don't do it at all !
It's simply logistics, your work is your advertising and bread and butter.
You don't shit where you eat.
This is why you don't buy from a guy who says I can do it.
You want a person who does this work all the time and who knows what they are really talking about .

Seems like a good idea if your a reputable builder to video the rebuild of the trans , show the serial number as you go. The buyer could see exactly what builder is doing & how parts looked etc. builder would have proof or work on video.

Hi Paul, Thanks for the video, just bought an old Land Rover gearbox from ebay. Wish I had seen your video before diving in. Drained the oil and a few syncro teeth came out but did get a good rebate on the price so was Ok in the end, just have to spend a bit more on parts. Noticeable how similar these old Brit and American boxes are.
Most we're built around the same Borg Warner platform, so yes there are similarites

Just found your channel. Great info. Just starting to put together my parts list for putting a T5 behind my late block flathead which is in a 49 Merc. Tired of the old 3 speed and solenoid OD. Thanks for the information your putting out.

Sad man. I see transmissions all the time on Facebook marketplace stating....shifts smooth, 75k miles, blah,blah,blah...and these people want 300 to 500 for used transmissions. they dont have the slightest clue on how rough a proclaimed smooth transmisson is. Every transmission I get like that always has worn out shift pads, etc. Very sad that people think that used T5s are worth so much.
I don't feel so bad now,,I just bought a t5 for 250 dollars, but found the front bearing was shot when I got it home,,,,but everything inside looks great,,,and even all the bolts came out very easily...

Paul, I hope you were able to recoup some of your money on that T5, You should report this Schmuck to E bay for passing off junk transmissions and bogus selling info.
Man! I’ve learned sooo much watching your videos! Wish I had TH-cam back when I was out breaking t-5’s! 😂 I’m gonna be good now with my new purchase, 95 5.0. I’ll probably be hitting you up for a rebuild kit in the future. Got the car and was low on fluid! Seems to be ok for now, but I’ll probably go through it once it getting some stuff straightened out on it and start hammering it!

Many new parts are in this purchased Transmission. And I would use it as is. The car surely breaks down because of other things.
The transmission couldn't even shift in the 1-2 shift because of the damaged and bent 1-2 synchro hub. The builder obviously had no idea how things work or relate to one another. Example; if the 1-2 ring doesn't fit on the hub because its bent, smacking it down with a hammer is not going to makes things somehow fix themselve..

Can you point me in the direction of parts to rebuild my t55 the guy I got it from said the shaft locked up on it
@@aaronthemartialmechanic893 Ask Paul first, not sure if he sells parts but, the "locked up" is a call for concern. Any manual transmission that is run in a low lubricant state has the possibility spin welding itself together especially if in overdrive as output shaft is spinning at a higher rate than the input shaft. Remove the input shaft bearing retainer and if you see any blueing indicative of heat stress, the likelihood of salvaging any of the internals in unlikely. Remember the T5 transmissions have no internal oil system they use merely in basin and sling to lube and cool internals.

I just don't get why people will half ass something like this. Growing up my dad taught me from a young age, and I paid attention to his words of advice as I did to what he was doing. And there was one thing he kept saying over and over. "It takes the same amount of time to do it right, as it does to screw it up"

Btw. does the book cover setting tapered roller bearings (I mean not for specific gearbox but more like general principles with aluminium gearbox housing, preload values, etc)?
The book covers basics . Shimming sometimes can be transmission specific in regards to setting preloads of tapered bearings

Paul, after watching several of your videos and reading you book, seems like unless you can find a wct5 form a reputable source, it would be best just to bite the bullet and buy a new tremec. I really like you “do it right approach” might cost more in the short run but better than a blown trans due to poor craftsmanship and parts. Still would like to build my own but need a good unit to start with. Suggestion?

Very interesting video...still wouldn't rebuild this myself, but I'd definitely rather buy a transmission from someone like GBV who knows what they're doing. If I had a bigger budget I'd love to put a properly fitted and ratio'd T5 in my 280z in place of the stock 4-spd manual in there now. I'd like to keep the 1st and 2nd at/near the same as they are now instead of the "close ratio" 5-spds that are apparently so much more popular with people. Tremec seems to have some ability to engineer a new transmission to the application at hand but they're so expensive the cost isn't justified even if I could afford it I wouldn't. I think some of the early '80s 280zx's were using the T5 but I'm not sure.
There are many T5 options but the stick Nissan came with a 3.35 1st which was pretty wide. The input for the Nissan app is pretty unique and longer compared to Ford and GM versions making is harder to customize the ratios.
Thanks so much for your input! I have a '76 and unfortunately the factory 5-speeds didn't come out til '77. 1st in the 4-spd in there now is 3.545, and other ratios there now that I'd prefer to keep. Some sites (datsunzgarage/borg) talking about the Borg Warner 5-spd option had a 3.5 in the 280zx turbo maybe a good option..makes sense Nissan went to the T5 to handle the extra load. Keeping the acceleration through the gears the same but having that extra 5th gear on the highway would be sweet. I just slapped on a new clutch master/slave and changed to Redline MT-90 in the tansmission and their GL5+ fluid in the diffy. It's shifting great for now at 130k original miles and I'm really enjoying it.
A few years down the road tho would I do better to just rebuild the transmission I have now to a 5-spd somehow?

I believe the '77-78 stock 5-spd would make me happy with the same ratios as mine with like an overdrive on it. Most people seem to prefer the close-ratio transmission from the later ZX but I don't think I'd be happy with that. If I had gobs more horsepower and/or wanted to race it, then of course it'd be awesome. A normal T5 would be a consideration for that no doubt. But for a stockish street car, I feel it's got the right gearing for what it is.

+heymisterderp I think the Datsun 5 speeds were a better unit than the T5. More complex but really less failure rates.

Thanks Paul...im buying a scrapped t5 from a 85 s10...it comes with a bellhousing for $75. No shifter.. he recycled it so ill have to find one....this 8nstall is for a little 31 roadster im building. The seller has told me the bearings are froze up so I'm going into this knowing a rebuild will be nessary. I'll attempt this myself. At this stage... am I crazy or is 75 a deal? Hopefully I can get this going for under 400.

I picked it up...picture a unit that has been out in the elements for 10 years (sellers statement) i bought it anyway...lol. every steel component is rusty and will require replacement. I'll peek into the case after i get a few beers in me to dull the pain. Im hoping I can keep my parts bill down to 300 bucks. The case has some cosmetic pitting of the aluminum that i can deal with....believe it's sound (no cracks) just will clean up and fill pits n paint eventually. The unit is all seized up for the rust.
I would never buy a rebuild motor or tranny after watching this video , tnx for the info
Honestly this would be equivalent to giving an M-16 rifle to my Drill Instructor to inspect. I'd get hammered for it...haha. But for real....I would rather go to the junk yard with all their T5's and pull/rebuild myself than buy on Ebay.

I'm trying to decide on a T 5 or NV 3500. Which one would hold up behind a 4.8 LR4 that may be turbocharged eventually? Will be going in my 85 Mazda RX7.
So the price is good, if it was filled with oil it would probably perform very well. This guy wants a brand new transmission for $800
I'm going to be removing my T5 to replace the clutch and flywheel this winter. The transmission seems to shift and operate just fine. The transmission has never had service other than regular fluid changes. Should I do anything while its out? Thinking I should at least replace the input bearing retainer.
When you mentioned cleaning parts,can you use brake cleaner to clean old oil off gears?Resaon I ask is I know they can take a real beating but if wrong fluid used it can immediately kill the trans
Brake cleaner evaporates too fast. Good for small work but not something I would recommend. Plus its very toxic.

Thanks for such a great video Paul. I'd like to add that it may not only be Ebay, but also trying to find a good T5 from salvage yards that you may be too far away from to inspect before you buy. They also may say rebuilt or resealed or tested good, but how do you know? I'm looking for a decent T5 (94 or 95ish) but am hesitant to pull the trigger for fear of getting what you got here. I've rebuilt many transmissions over the years, but I don't want to pay a premium price for a core quality box. A question I have is, what are the differences between early and later model world class units, such as the 5th gear shift fork you mentioned, and when did the tail housings change design etc.? Good things to know when looking at these things.
The important differences have to do with gear alloy and synchro design material. Most production WC units had early style paper lined rings. It wasn't until the early 90's that lining material started to change. It all worked well in my opinion and ring failures we're usually due to other circumstances such as a bad clutch. The only difference in tails were those used with reverse brake systems in the mid 90's. The better alloys and gear upgrades were done by 1986.
Hey Paul, Thanks for all the awesome content! I was wondering if you could tell me what I could use to clean all of the internal parts of my T5 transmission at home without a bath? I have seen in many places people recommending to use brake kleen but I was unsure if this was a safe thing to use and figured it would be worth it to just ask you and see if you had a second to let me know what you think I should use if not brake kleen? Mineral spirits. Then dispose of it properly. Here we have several places we can drop off containers of solvents after we use them

I got a bunch of mustang v6 t5's that are good and a bunch of foxbody v8 t5's that are bad. I am using these units in foxbodys. I have swapped the tailshaft housings drilled small hole for retainer for drive gear for speedo and I swapped front retainers. I had success with the first swap. He didn't have a 94/95 bellhousing or a 3.8 bellhousing with flywheel, clutch, starter swap, it went right in after I swapped the front retainer because the 99 v6 retainer was hitting the clutch fork, after that it went right in no problems and been good strong setup since then (about 2 yrs ago). I know have another swap and am running into a problem. I can't get the box all the way flush (1/4" gap) I've done all the swapping as before. I'm stumped. I know the input shaft is longer, but somehow I managed to get the other box in with just swapping the front retainer. I trimmed the retainer nose and it still won't fit. Since 94/95 bellhousing are so hard to find and most I find have stress cracks around the mounting ears, I think swapping the input shaft from the v8 to the v6 box is my best option. Is there anything I need to know about swapping these 2 that I might run into. I know I need to count the teeth first even though they should be the same (89 box and a 99 box is what I got). I've never tore a t5 completely apart much less swap the input shafts, it feels like it will come right out, but in your video it jumped the part where you actually removed the input shaft. Can the needle bearings be interchanged? Does the top cover have to come off?
I didn't mean to say it was hitting the clutch fork in my first swap. Correction it was hitting the pressure plate fingers.
Sounds like the input is bottoming out in the crank shaft. Take a piece of straight wire and use it as a gauge.
GearBoxVideo your right about the input shaft bottoming out in the crank. Can I just swap the input shafts? I saw another video where you tore a new box apart very quickly. Looks like that shaft comes right out. Does it go back in that easy? and there is play in the v8 shaft I need to use. Would that play be from the needle bearings or from the retainer bearing? That's why I asked about swapping the needle bearings. Is there a trick to getting them to stay in will installing the input shaft? In my past experiences with needle bearings and u joints once they start coming out they don't like to stay in place when trying to reassemble. Are those needle bearings the same in the v6 mustangs t5 inputshaft as in the v8 mustangs input shaft? Since I don't have the 94/95 longer bellhousing it looks like swapping to the shorter v8 inputshaft is my other choice.

Your Transmission teachings are awesome ive learned a lot. I have a Ford Ranger 4x4 1996 3.0 ... I recently dont have reverse ... I put it in reverse it engages but has no power only on level or very slight inclines ... I dont even use the gas going backwards because i dont want to do any further damage ... do you have any suggestions or just get it rebuilt
Is it automatic or stick? A manual transmission wouldn't slip unless its the clutch.

More than likely a clutch pack in burned up. You need to get this address before you end up getting stuck.

Paul, they make a 2.95 gear set for the T5 (T5Z). This set was for the Fox body type T5 or shorter input shaft as you probably know. I have a later T5 from a 95 Mustang (SN95) with the longer input shaft. is there any way to make that 2.95 gear set work? I've heard stories of welded input shaft but can't find any info. Thoughts?
There were some input people had modded. Some actually run a larger spline but take the needles not like the T5Z
