    I've broken at least a dozen T5's in my 406 third gen camaro and it's usually always 3rd gear that fails. I love dumping the clutch in 3rd gear and doing 1/8 mile burnouts, T5's do not.

      that has nothing to do with the driver. T5 flexes and knocks teeth off third gear. if the engaement teeth were sheared you could blame driver error

    Seeing you take that transmission apart reminded me of a time when my father had an old 3 speed transmission apart. A friend came over and thought he was going to pull a fat one on my father by putting a gear he had in his car in with my father's parts. He probably gave a little away by asking my father where the gear he had stuck in went. After only a minute or two my father said it doesn't go with this transmission. My father was pretty adept. I remember him bringing old milk dispenser machines back in the 60's and working on them and getting them working properly. Thanks for sharing.

      My father was rebuilding a 5 speed from a Subaru that I bought off my friends parents...he came over and asked "How can you put that back together, without a manual?" He answered "Easy, it resembles a VW transmission (he was a Porsche tech for 25 years) and honestly it easy...each gear is different size, hard to mix up reverse from 5th, 1st, etc!" We were amazed. $400 car ran forever afterward 🙂

    Watching Tommy rebuild that T5 made me cringe. So many things wrong. Smashing the tail stock off like that with a mallet distorts the front shifter bolt holes (seen it 100 times). He did not replace the 1st/2nd shift hub which I could seen by the wear on it is going to cause it to sooner than later pop out of 2nd gear. ($30 part) He did not replace the worn out bearing retainer with a new steel one ($30 part that is what makes that clutch chirping sound at idle till you touch the the clutch pedal and causes you throw out bearing to hang up on release) and my favorite rubbing the sealer over the top cover holes which forces the sealer down into the holes and causes cracks in the case. So put in a $1000 2.95z gear set without replacing two $30 parts that are going to cause you problems down the road.

    I have broken at least 10 T5 Transmissions over the years and it's always 3rd gear with the exception of one time I snapped the input shaft right in half, T5's cannot handle any power whatsoever especially when you're running slicks and nitrous ! I kept Bob Hanlon from Hanlon Motorsports in Pennsylvania very busy over the years .

    • @josephf593
      @josephf593 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Damm, now I don't feel so bad about the 4 T-5's i grenaded in my GT, same issue always 3rd even with a pro 5.0 shifter with stops set. It was just not a fan of power shifting, or sticky track prep surfaces, add a good set of tires into the mix and it was only a matter of time until you hear that dreaded sound of metal in the case!

      @classics289 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      3rd is by far the most common broken. Being in the center of the main shaft gear cluster it has the least amount of support from the bearings. As the load increases the main and cluster shafts push apart from each other and when the already small amount of tooth contact diminishes, ka-boom. Especially if the cluster shaft isn't held in place with the proper preload. With a billet steel cluster shaft retainer and proper preload you have a slightly better chance for longer life.

And doesn't have to work because of editing he can just throw a whole other unit in he bought rebuilt. I never have trusted Hot rod magazine people or magazines. I bet I know which... Mine doesn't either.
      They rolled it out in the late 80's to early 90's. Cars and trucks lined the highways everywhere! Only 2 or 3 new cars/trucks out of almost 100 per day could pass, even then... Most all would fail the test and fights were breaking out at the inspection stations.
      People took it as an offense when they were told they couldn't drive their new truck/car to work and to not drive it until it was fixed. Conundrum for sure with a sticker that was to not be removed by anyone other than the station who inspected it.
      Less than two months in and the state pulled it all out. No one could pass because cars and trucks not sold on California were built to different standards and the all of equipment was calibrated for *"CALIFORNIA'S EMISSIONS TEST!"*
      The "friend" state has been saving lives ever since!

      Depends on what you do with it , how heavy the car is, and if it gets traction. They will put up with more than 300 hp if you don't run slicks and don't power shift 2nd to 3rd. I could break them at will in a 450 hp 406 3400 lb 3rd gen camaro. I could also make them last for quite a while if I didn't have any spares in the garage. The later T5 World Class a little stronger.

I dropped in a mildly built 350 with a Tremec 5 speed. Never had a problem no matter how hard I launched it. The Tremec did require some custom mounts and I had to engineer an offset to locate the shifter in the proper position, but it worked out perfectly.

    Ya might try rebuilding one and then find out ya need expensive tools or a jig to get it back together. NVG3500 Chevy or Dodge truck...probably need a jig. You can get it together without one but it's a bitch if you've never done it before.

      Rdubfalco
      - After the SROD was replaced, every manual Fox mustang, and several Camaros, came with one of these from the factory. If you aren't overpowering it significantly, it works just fine. No need to spend $2500 - $3000 when $200 in parts is all you need to get you going if you didn't break 3rd on the cluster. And it's 35 lbs lighter making it easier remove and replace.
