I love this game. Since patch I have been playing with resolution mode on 120fps on. I tested my frame rates and was happy where I was. Loving it at 60fps, so 80-100 was amazing. Not losing graphic quality is icing on the cake. I’m glad you guys confirmed the actual resolution etc, because I wasn’t 100 sure but now I won’t stop and think about “does it look the same?” Lol
The resolution is definitely lower if you compare the screenshots in the print article. Not sure what exactly is going on, but the 60 fps mode has more steps/better blending on edges compared to the 120fps VRR mode. I count at least 50% more vertical pixels on a given edge comparison. I don't think Oliver Mackenzie is as good at pixel counting as the other DF crew.
Absolutely love playing this game in PSVR2 with the Thrustmaster Gt2 wheel and pedal set. I do own a 120hz LG C1 OLED tv, but I won’t ever see the benefits of this update, as I have no intention of ever playing the game again in 2d flat screen mode.
I was never really interested in driving games because playing on a flat screen didn’t provide an immersive experience, no matter how nice your wheel and pedal setup was. Psvr2 and GT7 definitely changed that. Best gaming experience I’ve likely ever had.
The 120hz resolution mode needs the TAA settings from GT Sport PS4, dial down the sharpness to improve the sub-pixel aliasing. GT Sport PS4 ran at 1080p and had superb TAA.
I've beeb playing GT7 almost every day since launch, and this has been my favorite update yet. It was so immediately noticeable. So much smoother, and it might be my imagination, but I think even the menu load screens are faster. It is just beautiful. That being said, I wish it would go back to ray tracing for replays and other game modes. The actual racing is great at 120 fps, but I want it to be beautiful also when I'm not driving.
I play it everyday in VR since PSVR2's launch. It's clearly smoother when looking for example out the side window in motion. It's minimum 90 fps now in my opinion 💟
Great update overall, but I do not think the 120hz, resolution, w/VRR mode is visually equivalent to the 4k/60 fps mode. The 4k/60 mode has an overall much more stable appearing image. There's noticeably weaker AA in the 120hz-res-w/VRR mode particularly visible on white road lines in the distance and what appears to be evidence of some kind of reconstruction at play (looks like checkerboard) if you look at the lined appearance of the ghost cars in time trials and the road surface on some tracks (e.g. Mount Panorama) when the sun is low.
Thank you so much for this analysis! They could've made these 4 options more clear to the end user, especially the difference in pixel count between the resolution mode with or without VRR.
4K 120 +VRR Resolution mode not working. It does not look like 4K at all. I have a Sony 120hz tv. What am I missing, just updated the PS5 and the TV?!?
Fantastic work Olie! I have high hopes that we see a 120fps mode for PSVR2 down the track considering the continual work Polyphony are putting into the title. Great to see.
@ronaldkasteel3459 Yes, the PSVR2 is 90-120hz. But I highly doubt a high graphics game like this would ever be able to reach that. As is, GT7 runs at 60fps in VR, reprojected up to a higher fps, which causes ghosting on moving objects. It's not terrible, but it's there. Same with Horizon Call of the Mountain. Reprojected fps gives you the smooth look you need in VR, but due to the blurring ghosting effect things don't look as sharp as it would when running at a native hertz. So if GT7 can't even reach 90fps in VR, there's no way it could reach 120fps.
Even though im not a person that can currently appreciate these modes, its incredible that they exist and will be useful in the future. Playing your favorite games with enough frame-rate improvements paired with vrr is definetly a reason to play them again.
@@stefanschuchardt5734 30fps still have a place for slower paced visually impressive games, or even just 30fps cutscenes and photo modes. 40 is definitely the better middle ground for most everything else

one little nit pick to your almost perfect analysis.... 120Hz VRR Raytracing is enabled in the replay mode.... actually quiet impressive! Love you guys content. Unrelated to GT 7 but when reviewing fighting games could you include input latency test for each console? I ask because input latency is very important to us in the competitive fighting game community and is the primary basis on which we decide which platform to use for tournaments.
@@demoflow PC isn't used for fighting game tournaments because of cost, consistency and manageability. Fighting game tournaments aren't single game tournaments and aren't funded and ran by the developer/publisher unlike the rest of esports the only outliers are smash bros and brawlhalla. Smash due to sheer community size and dedication though still grass roots cuz nintendo hates us and will shut down any tournament they dont like and brawlhalla because it's the only game where tournaments are funded and ran by the dev plus game originated on PC and the dev can afford it so that's what they use. The major tournaments easily get 300+ entrants for a single game and run at least 5 different main event titles and span 3 days usually run friday-sunday so to minimize cost and have performance consistency we use consoles. Then consoles also have a smaller range of potential issues that are also easier to fix and don't need performance calibration so they are easier to manage as well.
@@drehm1011 havent competed in fighting games for a while . But I get what you're saying specially if these tournaments aren't big. Yep. It's such a huge omission from DF. FPS games can have locked framerates with high resolutions all they want but if the input delay is bad, you'll struggle to even find word of mouth, especially since a lot of players who care about this already invested in PC's these days anyhow. I hope Tekken 8, Street Fighter 6 and the rest of 2023's fighters aren't giving you guys 5+ frames to contend with...
I really like just watching my cars in the garage or in dealerships with Ray Tracing enabled sometimes, even if I have an LG C1 with all the good stuff (120Hz + VRR). Already tried all the 4 modes before this review and noticed even the small aliasing in the Resolution Mode+120Hz+VRR. But the lack of Ray Tracing in menus and replays was the most disappointing thing for me tbh ☹️ these two things made me go back to Resolution Mode+60Hz since the visuals are the most important factor for me, at least in GT7. I hope they'll add 30fps Ray Tracing in menus and replays when using Resolution Mode+120hz+VRR (and possibly improve the image quality to match the non-120Hz mode) so we'll get the ultimate GT7 experience. Maybe they'll keep that for a possible PC release(?). Great review as always DF ❤️
Been playing this game since launch and 120hz VRR mode on with focus resolution/ray tracing enabled is def the best way to play. Very decent resolution with rock solid 90-100fps looks and plays great. The full 120hz mode is smooth but not worth the hit to graphics.
Forza has much bigger things to take care of first than 120FPS....like, proper steering wheel support, proper rank based multiplayer implementation, more realistic driving model and so on....these are some of the reasons why FM7 got annihilated by GT sports in 2017
On a 77" OLED TV i found there to be too much motion blur at the old 60Hz mode, so I was thrilled to hear about this 120Hz update. When I enabled it the extra clarity of the motion was nice but the shorter draw distance was noticeably bad. However I didn't know there were four combinations of modes in total, so I'll see if I already had it in resolution mode.
So I just started my game development journey with unreal engine 5 and I cannot believe how much digital foundry has primed me to know the terms I need to know in terms of graphics. Kudos to DF
Great video as always (even if the quality of the driving makes me want to cry)! I'm really enjoying the resolution + 120hz + VRR mode, I think it's a great compromise between visual quality and framerate as the bump to the fidelity of motion is appreciable. While I can live without ray traced replays, it would be cool if they gave you an explicit toggle for that in each mode.
That was something mostly started by xbox fanboys. Yet the mtx in forza horizon 5 are much worse then on gt7. I played both. Gt7 gives you a fair amount of credits per race. You can earn up to 1.7 million credits per hour.
@@ElephantTrap Um, No. That was a very real problem that was stated by all GT Veterans. Please check out r/GranTurismo for the community reaction and ground reality.
There were literally no monetization issues. They nerfed some payouts then changed them back and then some within a month I think it was. The big payout races earn you 1.5 million credits an hour roughly. It's very easy to buy all the cars you want.

While PS5's VRR implementation is lackluster compared to Xbox - Sony did a good job of taking real advantage of it in games - they simply unlock the framerate for you. I only hope Microsoft is up for a response with unlocked 60+ fps Forza Motorsport with ray traced reflections. At least Turn 10 promised RT+60 fps+4K on Series X

This is why DF GT games don’t look as appealing to gamers who don’t actually own the games… The default chase view camera looks so stiff because it’s locked to a different section of the car. I’ve said this in the past, ray tracing and resolution choices are nice additions, but an e-sports minded individual will take greater frames at a little bit lower resolution. It’s the old adage of “frames win games”. If you’re a content creator then resolution may be for you, but if you’re a competitive player, you want smooth gameplay.

I have a new Sony A80K OLED tv that supports VRR and I’ve actually disabled VRR due to increased input lag. Has anybody else stayed away from VRR due to input lag?
I wonder which gives less input lag? Non VRR 120 fps or VRR? As with VRR basically we are running as if it is non "vsynced" thus no additional double or triple buffers to add onto the input lag and is running basically raw. While 120 fps is twice or even more responsive then 60 fps variant but is it faster in input response then VRR variant? I'm currently playing in 120 fps mode but if the VRR variant is identical or even faster then 120 fps variant... I'd gladly go with more fidelity and even more responsive input...

You will love it.
PSVR2 with GT7 is phenomenal. Especially if you already like GT7. It blows away my LG C2.
@Matchumpleki cheaper then you're phone
@Matchumpleki already got it worth every penny 🛐
This is awesome, I’ll definitely circle back to check out the resolution + VRR mode. Thanks, Olie!
That's the best Mode in my eyes 👀
Absolutely love playing this game in PSVR2 with the Thrustmaster Gt2 wheel and pedal set. I do own a 120hz LG C1 OLED tv, but I won’t ever see the benefits of this update, as I have no intention of ever playing the game again in 2d flat screen mode.
Same here, i can't go back to playing this game or any racing game for that matter on a flatscreen after playing GT7 on the PS VR2
Same it feels like the defacto racing experience with the VR2 and setup is so easy it's just like why not
GT7 on PSVR2 made me way less hyped for the new Forza, I don't know if I can go back to flat screen racing games 🤣
@@xilonqmb Yup feeling the same. Without vr support the next Froza is dead to me. It’s that simple.
I was never really interested in driving games because playing on a flat screen didn’t provide an immersive experience, no matter how nice your wheel and pedal setup was.
Psvr2 and GT7 definitely changed that. Best gaming experience I’ve likely ever had.
Resolution/RayTracing with 120hz mode is the move.
Wtf? With an rtx 4080 oder 4090?

We've come a long way since the 20 hz of gran turismo 5
Audio volume is quite low (compared to almost every other YT video).
Surprisingly my favorite psvr2 game, don't even like racing games but love this one in VR.
Would have been awesome to see a 90hz version on PSVR2 ❤️
Been waiting for this 👍🏻
4K 120 +VRR Resolution mode not working.
Does the psvr 2 have that refresh rate?
@ronaldkasteel3459
Yes, the PSVR2 is 90-120hz.
80-90fps resolution mode is pretty amazing for me already..kudos to dev!
I'd still love a lower res RT mode. 1440p 60/40fps or something? Not everyone has a 4k 120fps TV anyway
Yes! 40 fps is the best compromise. 30fps needs to die.

I'd be interested to know if there are any noticeable performance changes when changing the PS5 output resolution from 4K down to 2K or even 1080p.
I’d assume unlikely as it’ll just downsample as if it was a higher resolution image being downscaled to a lower resolution display. With my Series X I haven’t encountered a single game that doesn’t just downsample its higher resolution to my 1080p screen.
Top notch video, love the quantifiable difference between the modes on different games, and how you guys present it to us viewers. Thanks again! 💚 🤘

Looks like HDR is turned off when you showed TV OSD on 120hz mode. Is that something that does not work?
HDR does work, i'v got mine running at 3840x2160 HDR, UHD, VRR in the 120hz mode but have chosen the ray tracing mode over the frame rate mode as the frame rate mode seems to be alot more blurry in places, he's using a samsung tv as am i with the same osd game bar so i'm not sure why he hasn't got the hdr enabled, maybe his tv doesn't support it or there's a reason why he's got it turned off, but it does work, maybe @Digital Foundry or someone can explain more why it's off in this video.
Oh, I see! Thanks a lot for the answer
I have noticed a bug when trying to use 120hz and VRR with my 1440p hdmi 2.1 monitor. With the system set to 1440p, if I enable 120hz in game the system output changes to 1080p, confirmed by backing out of the game and going to the display info page in system settings

one little nit pick to your almost perfect analysis.... 120Hz VRR Raytracing is enabled in the replay mode.... actually quiet impressive! (that´s why it drops sometimes even below 50 fps. it seems to even lock the game to 40fps if it drops below 48 fps. it seems to be the case in the garage and café car model view modes). Love you guys content. Unrelated to GT 7 but when reviewing fighting games could you include input latency test for each console? I ask because input latency is very important to us in the competitive fighting game community and is the primary basis on which we decide which platform to use for tournaments.
If you trying to compete just get a PC . Consoles aren't good for competitive low fps and lots of input delay.
But Halo/COD tournaments are played on PC that's why I assumed that's what all games used 😂 I think input lag is noticeable in both consoles you should use w.e console they gonna use at the tournament that way you get used to it's input lag and controlller
@@demoflow yea that's why we have a tournament standard for which console we use.
Cheers Ollie, good coverage :)
Great video. Only complaint is no toggle for RT in replays.

The full 120hz mode is smooth but not worth the hit to graphics.
Another fantastic video Oliver! 😊
Now Forza needs to add 120hz
😂 you ain’t lying
👍🏻
Forza has much bigger things to take care of first than 120FPS....like, proper steering wheel support, proper rank based multiplayer implementation, more realistic driving model and so on....these are some of the reasons why FM7 got annihilated by GT sports in 2017
Forza first need to be a real car sim. Right now at world champions they are the only car sim using controller not wheels to match 😅
They'll just have to delay it again all good Xbox dudes don't mind 😂
On VR, it's hands down the best sim out there. PSVR2 is far ahead of its competitors
Kudos to DF
Protip: Press L2 to use the brakes instead of slamming into every other car
Great video as always (even if the quality of the driving makes me want to cry)! I'm really enjoying the resolution + 120hz + VRR mode, I think it's a great compromise between visual quality and framerate as the bump to the fidelity of motion is appreciable. While I can live without ray traced replays, it would be cool if they gave you an explicit toggle for that in each mode.
So why not the frame rate mode at 120Hz with vrr? What's the difference between them?
Does anyone know if they fixed the monetization issues that everyone was complaining about at launch?
@@dhivydhimanth1960
As the others have stated here, there is no monetization issue in GT7 currently and there likely won't be again. You can buy optional credits but it's actually much smarter to just earn them in-game.
Monetisation has never been an issue in this game.
I wish there were an option to implement the same resolution mode as before the update, specifically during playback. I enjoy watching the races in that mode the most, and motion isn't significant to me since I'm not playing.

The default chase view camera looks so stiff because it’s locked to a different section of the car. If it’s looser, like in the Forza games it’s more visually appealing

So do I understand this correctly that with VRR/120 fps mode enabled there is no way to have 30fps Raytracing Replays anymore?
Gran Turismo is such a vibe. Forza 8 is DOA.

I’ve said this in the past, ray tracing and resolution choices are nice additions, but an e-sports minded individual will take greater frames at a little bit lower resolution. It’s the old adage of “frames win games”. If you’re a content creator then resolution may be for you, but if you’re a competitive player, you want smooth gameplay.
so you suggest 1440p resolution mode , with 120fps almost steady as this video suggest but with no VRR enabled to get best racing performance ?
So much salty pc and xbots fanboys in here lol
I agree
It would be awesome to know which display settings are fastest. Obviously it should be 120hz prioritise frame rate, but is it?
Too bad there is no 120fps on TH-cam to truly show the difference in the video.
I have a new Sony A80K OLED tv that supports VRR and I’ve actually disabled VRR due to increased input lag.
Has anybody else stayed away from VRR due to input lag?
I really cannot perceive it. I heard someone else mention this too though.
The question is when is youtube moving to 120hz, 144hz, 165hz, 240hz or uncapped?!
I’m confused, I’ve got a non vrr 4K60fps panel that allows 1080p120. My question I’m running the game in 4K60fps mode without VRR and I’m facing weird frame rates drops during actual race. But with VRR DF points out the 4K mode runs at 60-90fps meanwhile mine without VrR drops below 60. Can someone explain.
Good vid and annoyingly enough it makes me want a VRR monitor that much more. Did you notice if VRR 120 Resolution mode also retains motion blur?
Why not any city courses. Rome, London, Monte Carlo coast, etc those are missing
Haven’t played GT seriously since GT3. I’m so tempted with this 120 mode though!
Oh yea, that Resolution+VRR mode is gonna be a dope upgrade
I hope this gives Turn 10 another reason to implement a 120hz mode in the new Forza Motorsport for Series X.
Finally, I was waiting for this
I had read somewhere to get 120Hz on the PSVR2 , is you must turn off the 120hz mode within the system preferences that supports external screens, and boot Gt7 , and then select 120hz in GT with the headset on.....
A convoluted approach , for sure... But be interesting to see if this does allow 120hz on the PSVR2
They should’ve at least added an in game ray tracing mode with lower resolution at 60fps with VRR enabled.

I have a VRR TV, is it better to run locked in 120mhz or in VRR ? In VRR I see the HZ fluctuating between different numbers, Im confused now
The 120 framerate mode takes a big hit on visual clarity so I would stick with the 120 resolution mode. It does jump around 80-100fps but it still looks super smooth with much sharper visuals.
would be great to see another assessment on dying light 2. it received a ton of amazing patches and is the most stable game right now with RT, Dlss3 frame generation, especially considering the Open World nature with extremely vast views. No hiccups, no stutter... pretty awesome!
im curious why they opted out ray tracing with res 120hz vrr. if it basically function as a unlocked res mode, why not keep ray tracing
