The only issue was the delay on James' vocals, but everything else sounded pretty good to me, and he even got that down by the middle of the song I think.
The intimate setting definitely makes a difference--huge bands like Metallica aren't used to playing in a small space. They can probably hear themselves clearly for once
Very much in agreement. I may add that the band or the producer has reintroduced "reverb" and "delay" to the vocals that has been missing in the last few albums.
I love Lars’ subtle count back into the song. He may not be the best drummer in people’s eyes but the dude really loves what he does. Gotta give him credit it for that.
***** You do realise that Lars' doin' great lately, right? I mean, the whole band is so much better, they still kick ass and always will! Metal Up Your Ass! \m/
James' live vocals have improved immensely!! Idk if he's taking better care of his voice or if he's learned some more effective vocal techniques..? It's so much better than it has been for the past 10 years at least.
Dude: 1991 all over again. Eighth grade, parents divorcing, no girls into me, double chin, one time a zit in my ear, and this song is still the best part of it all.
GOD BLESS METALLICA!!! THIS BAND STILL MEANS SO MUCH... SINCE I WAS A KID TILL NOW , I'M LISTENING THEIR MUSIC TO FEEL BETTER AND TO THROW AWAY MY STRESS AND ALL THESE F... DEMONS... THANK YOU GUYS... DO U UNDERSTAND IT?? THAT'S WHY I'LL BE WITH U TILL THE END, MAN.... 'CAUSE THE MEMORY REMAINS
I agree with all the comments here about James phenom vocals. The man has worked through personal issues and embraced sobriety. The band as a whole seemed to have found their groove. I would absolutely love seeing them in an intimate setting like this performance- where you can appreciate all the nuances of their playing as a band and as individual. I get it though-Metallica is still a band that can fill stadiums-and those perforce a have their own place. The guys love to play and love their fans.
Love Howard and the boys from Metallica. I busted out laughing at the Gary Puppet right at the first. Anyway, they still got it. Keep on rockin fellas.
Still giving it their all as when I saw them in the early 90's in Sydney and then again in late 90's (?) in Newcastle. Seeing them in October in Sydney again!
They Nailed It ...Ill say that that was the BEST live performance of any song i have 'ever' heard .. .a little prejudice coz i love metallica , but in all honesty, the performance was so perfect and flawless
Watch Metallica's FULL 2016 interview now: siriusxm.us/MetallicaHSS16
2:00 Lars fails,James smiles...Brothers!
I missed it.
he’s been playing with Lars for almost 44 years he’s used to him failing
Holy shit James vocals are amazing.
Yes, James' voice is very good at the moment...
it's James :)
I don't know how he did it but he has gotten even better with age. Most singers would have blown out their voice by now
always
Props to the sound engineer!
SCOOOOOT!
SSSSCCCCCCCAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHTTTTTT
3:48 OOhh Kirk's back vocals, it's so amazing to see that)
It's Sad (but True) that Metallica's best live sound to date has been on the Howard Stern show. Good job, Scott the engineer!
They should hire him :-)
I believe it's also them improved and put a lot of effort in it. Very tight. They nailed MOP
The only issue was the delay on James' vocals, but everything else sounded pretty good to me, and he even got that down by the middle of the song I think.
Alot of artist sound best on Stern I've noticed. lol
The intimate setting definitely makes a difference--huge bands like Metallica aren't used to playing in a small space. They can probably hear themselves clearly for once
God damn James chrome explorer!!! Fucking beast ass guitar!
I was thinking that. I wondered why I couldn't see... Jk It looks awesome
Lmao, "chrome explorer"
I love the fact that they still love performing. you can really see it in their faces and they're not just saying that.
Anyone else catch at 1:43 James telling the sound man to turn down his vocals in his ear monitor.
"I'm you!" damn, that sounded straight out of the black album
That's right, it sounded awesome. Took me back to 1991... Great. :)
bit the old James there 👍👍👍
4:47 "I am you"?
4:47 "I am you"?
Стоян Димитров Yeah, I should have link the time.
Fucking awesome performance! The guys really seem revitalized with their new album finally coming out. Can't wait to see them on tour.
Wow james sounds good here!! 4:57 That "i'm you" sounds like James did in '91 - '92 or '93.
Very much in agreement. I may add that the band or the producer has reintroduced "reverb" and "delay" to the vocals that has been missing in the last few albums.
Man, James's voice has improved SOOO much in the last 10 years. Amazing.
November 18 is close.
urban Legend Ikr! It's just a month and 20 days!
lol James trying not to laugh at 2:03 cuz Lars messed up
1:59 XD
LOL. Indeed....wtf did Lars have in his mind hahaha
if the drummer was John Doe he would have been fired the next day.
I love Lars’ subtle count back into the song. He may not be the best drummer in people’s eyes but the dude really loves what he does. Gotta give him credit it for that.
Check out the missed snare on the second verse lol
@@samdecasas6920 1:58 oh my god lmfaoo even James and Rob are trying not to laugh
It has definitely been their best performance in years

Rob's bass audible

They sound fucking awesome! Best they've sounded in awhile, glad to hear so
1:42 Wow. Didn't miss a fucking note.
Damn James's chrome guitar looks fucking amazing
Metallica song is so much better when I can listen to the bass line as clear s this.. Thanks Rob, his bass tech, and anyone who makes this happen.
James's face trying not to laugh at lars at 2:00 had me in stitches
To be fair the show was at like 7am.
Are you deaf? Lol he clearly missed the snare hook ( & 2E&A)
TheBlastBeast lol butthurt af
***** lol you wanna teach me about Metallica, dude I know basically everything about 'em, peace.
***** You do realise that Lars' doin' great lately, right? I mean, the whole band is so much better, they still kick ass and always will! Metal Up Your Ass! \m/
Howard Stern + Metallica = something that has been with my all my 34 years on this earth. Epic.
HOLY SHIT BASS!!!
James' live vocals have improved immensely!! Idk if he's taking better care of his voice or if he's learned some more effective vocal techniques..? It's so much better than it has been for the past 10 years at least.
Watched MoP, Enter Sandman and now Sad But True live on Howard Stern and I can’t get over how well mixed this session was!!! Everything is perfect!
damn Rob bass is killing it this.... makes so much more heavy!!!
This is the best live sound they have had in years.
Holy shit, Rob exists! Great mixing, props to the sound engineer for finally bringing out the bass tracks!
Perrfect timing Lars...
He just was a disaster here😂

This is the best I've heard them in years. The sound is fantastic...and Lars is actually keeping great time!!
EvilBeavil Yeah, I know...I was being optimistic.

I think I'm gonna have to see these guys soon ! Metallica fuckin rulez
Jae Beez it's amazing to see them live and go feel the energy they give off and how the crowd gives it right back. I've seen them 3 times now.
I seen them in 91 at the Meadowland's arena it was an amazing concert may need to get some of that energy again lol
James really had re-worked his voice it sound like he returned to 1993!
The body language and facial expressions by James shows how much he’s into playing in a room to an audience of one 💯
Dude: 1991 all over again. Eighth grade, parents divorcing, no girls into me, double chin, one time a zit in my ear, and this song is still the best part of it all.
James sounds fantastic.
KILLER BASS!
I dont understand how they can do so flawlessly good when they go on Howard Stern show. Even UNforgivin, they nailed it. Too good.
The "Pay, pay the price" is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tone sounds beautiful on James guitar.
Sad but True is one of the few Metallica songs that actually sounds better in the drop tuning they use live.
Thumbs up if you came here to hear if the bass sounds as great as in the other videos.
The sound of Rob's bass in The Howard Stern Show performances is just perfect!
35 yrs + and still killin it. Howard is cool too
This song hasn't sounded this good since it was released.

And THAT'S the way it SHOULD be !! Some bands look like they are 'getting through' a song. These guys look like they REALLY enjoy it !!!
THAT GUITAR OF JAMES!!!! OMG!!!
VERY NICE!
It is once again a pleasure to listen to them live!
Rob is capable of more than this. He is seriously under utilized!
That mirror explorer tho...
Just one of THE best metal riffs ever, that's all.
I agree with all the comments here about James phenom vocals. The man has worked through personal issues and embraced sobriety. The band as a whole seemed to have found their groove. I would
absolutely love seeing them in an intimate setting like this performance- where you can appreciate all the nuances of their playing as a band and as individual.
I get it though-Metallica is still a band that can fill stadiums-and those perforce a have their own place. The guys love to play and love their fans.
That what Howard said in the end.. Hit the nail on the Head!
AMAZING BAND...Saw them Live.....one of the BEST concerts ever......
goosebumps. guys killing it in their 50s.
James voice sounds great! Terrific performance!!!
Beautiful, I can tell apart every instrument at all times, I wish the recorded songs I own sounded like this.
Lovin' the live sound they're packin' these days, and going into the new album, its all the better. Sounding tight and dead on.
Such an awesome performance and that chrome guitar is a beast
metallica listen to the fans... let the bass do the magic !!
Perfection.
Two thumbs way up! I've seen many live versions of this song on TH-cam but I have to say this blew my mind! Great job boys!!
How have we not had a rendition of For whom the bell tolls on the Howard stern show yet? With how the bass sounds when they play, it would *SLAAAAAAP*
so cool man.....the commentary at the end just makes it that much better
love them ... they always put on a good show... they really bring it when you see them live!
Rob has been pulling out some damn sexy warwicks recently. Need to get myself one.
Wow, amazing performance of Sad But True. James's lyrical content are so powerful
Bass in the mix WTF must be a cover band! Thanks Rob, loved you since SxTx
Suicidal for Life.

Still giving it their all as when I saw them in the early 90's in Sydney and then again in late 90's (?) in Newcastle. Seeing them in October in Sydney again!
Wow! This sounds fantastic! Especially for an in-studio performance..
I thought once that Robert doesn't fit but... I think he in certain way makes the band "cooler". Robert is a winner!
I need a photo of all of Jame's Snakebytes with all their different finishes. They are hands-down my favorite guitar
Still . the BEST song and live performance of the song EVER
Damn. Whoever did the audio for this did a good job. In other words, definitely not Scott the Engineer LOL
FUCKING SICK explorer/snakebyte
Just one of my favorite songs by these guys...
They haven't sounded this good since Garage Inc/S&M
I think this is the best performance of this song on youtube.
They Nailed It ...Ill say that that was the BEST live performance of any song i have 'ever' heard .. .a little prejudice coz i love metallica , but in all honesty, the performance was so perfect and flawless
They always give 100% Love it!❤🦘🐨
Damn- they nailed that performance. METALLICA!!!
Irvine '96, best performance of this song.
The thing I love about Metallica is that they all seem to enjoy watching each other play.
Would be nice if all their live shows could be mixed this good.
Rob is getting bigger. Damn, he is in fit
James looks and sounds good here. Nice!
Their sound is somehow "bigger" and "larger" here, than their usual live recordings. Sounded good!
Wow they sounds awesome!! Metallica still got it. They should hire the sound guy.
They sounded great it's amazing that they still fucking rock as hard as they do 34 years later
Lovin' that chrome guitar!!
Please post more
