Los oídos de el mundo echan de menos tu batuta Claudio... este es uno de los primeros CD's que compre allá a finales de los años '80. Magistral dirección de la Wiener Philharmoniker interpretando las Danzas Hungaras de Johannes Brahms. Mi favorito es el No.5 en Sol Menor pero los 21 me gustan. Gracias Maestro Abbado por su legado.

The Hungarian Dances (German: Ungarische Tänze) by Johannes Brahms, are a set of 21 lively dance tunes based mostly on Hungarian themes, completed in 1869. Only numbers 11, 14 and 16 are entirely original compositions. In fact, number 5 was based on the csárdás by Kéler Béla titled "Bártfai emlék" which Brahms mistakenly thought was a traditional folksong.
They are among Brahms' most popular works, and were certainly the most profitable for him. Each dance has been arranged for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles. Brahms originally wrote the version for piano four-hands and later arranged the first 10 dances for solo piano. The most famous Hungarian Dance is No. 5.
Brahms wrote orchestral arrangements for No. 1, No. 3 and No. 10. Other composers, including Antonín Dvořák, orchestrated the other dances. These composers were Andreas Hallén for No. 2, Paul Juon for No. 4, Martin Schmeling for Nos. 5 to 7, Hans Gál for Nos. 8 and 9, Albert Parlow for No. 11 to 16. Dvořák orchestrated the last numbers.

"Brahms was first exposed to this evocative folk culture in Hamburg in the early 1850s, when the city’s port became a key exit point for people fleeing revolutionary Europe. The pianist and composer was an habitué of the city’s dance halls and taverns and, galvanised by his recitals with Hungarian violinist Eduard Remenyi, he came to know and love the lilt and rhythms of the csardas and verbunkos.
On moving to Vienna, then capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Brahms started to write down his Hungarian Dances, promptly selling thousands of copies worldwide. The first piece from his collection of 21 dances, based on Miska Borzo’s Isteni Csardas... "

This was the first orchestral version of this I bought (I've always had the London vinyl with Julian Katchen doing the piano 4 hands version) and can see why Abbado looks like he does on the album cover. It's a good disc but there are times when the Vienna group just won't commit but there are times when they are superlative.

My understanding is the Brahms did not compose these piece, he arranged (fabulous well, I might add) from existing Hungarian music. He deserves great credit but not too much. Are my sources correct. Anyone care to comment?
Just like Dvorak didn't compose his two Opus of Hungarian Dances. These were just cash cows for the two.
